Graham Duff's Mixtape // 08 Jan 2025
1/7/2025
90 minutes of the best new music in multiple genres. Including garage rock from The Ape-ettes, the witty, gritty rap of Far From Ya Average, alt rock courtesy of Crustsox, the wayward indie of Brightworks, sleek club sounds with Elemental Keys, the spectral melodies of Robin Guthrie and so much more. From out of the vaults come the glorious sound of early New Order, otherworldly pop with Porcelain Raft, and a masterpiece from American composer John Adams. Meanwhile this week’s soundtrack music selections come from two contrasting horror films: Richard Band’s score for 1985’s ‘Re-Animator’ and Franz Reizenstein’s soundtrack to Hammer’s 1959 classic ‘The Mummy’. Swimming in Sound : Colin Newman & Malka Spigel’s weekly show (1:00 pm on Slack City) - an eclectic mix that cuts across many genres. Live on Slack City, catchup on @totallyradio. For two hours we play music & sound that has grabbed our attention this week & talk about it, be it new or old familiar or obscure. This week's show we play Samantha Crain, Route 8, Astrid Sonne. Baalti, Shovel Dance Collective, Little Simz, Fcukers, Anoushka Shankar, Mary Ocher, Baba Stiltz & Okay Kaya, FUTUREGiRL, Ludovico Einaudi, BABii, The Spinners and The Beatles! amongst others. This week we present a show with less talk & more music on account of Malka having lost her voice a bit (it a lot better than it was but we don’t want to push it). Meanwhile we have given Andy another week off but are playing a track by BABii who Love Thy Neighbour manage. We also, of course includes tracks by Wire, Minimal Compact and “something from us” – this week in the light of being not able to hear Malka in full voice we can at least hear her sing with the title track from her album Every Day Is Like The First Day (also somewhat appropriate for the early days of 2025! Please note that for looking up tours by artists we play (including ourselves) – www.songkick.com & www.bandsintown.com are great ways to search. It’s worth looking even if we don’t announce dates! It’s Ian Curtis’ Christmas party, and this week’s show is word-heavy - just the way the big man would have wanted it. Low-key existential and, yes, actually quite sad, the hour features avant-garde icons Bertie Marshall, Mark Perry, and the late Scott Walker. Their strange, off-kilter soundscapes serve to slightly sweeten the deal. Goodbye 2024 and good riddance!
