5/14/2018
More
Where i live there is an election coming up and the lies have already started through campaign advertising and its important that people explain to their kids what its all about. The presidential campaign was ugly and i’m certain that most people had no idea of what the issues were.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-030: Have your kids help the disabled

5/10/2018
More
I’ve always told kids to stop complaining because there is always someone else out there that has it worst off than them and that’s why it’s important that they learn to volunteer when they can. If you are fortunate to be healthy, think about those who have a disability. There are a lot of people with brilliant minds who are stuck in a body that doesn’t work properly and it would mean the world to them if you spent some time with them.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-029: When was being male or female bad?

5/7/2018
More
The world has changed quite a bit over my lifetime. Being gay is not a sickness, women can join any profession they like, although its still a struggle in some areas and the medical profession is making it easier for us to live longer but the one thing that confuses me is when i read about how people are raising their kids gender neutral or that they want to be referred to as “they” ...

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-028: Don’t ban Mother’s Day

5/3/2018
More
Unfortunately there is a trend to ban mother’s day activities and crafts in schools because not everyone has a mother and some kids have two dads as parents. The argument is that there are different types of families these days and they don’t want to make kids feel left out. The same goes for father’s day and that’s not right. Removing a harmless tradition because not everyone celebrates will just make life boring.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-027: Celebrity PR stunt of the week: I was shamed online

4/30/2018
More
I wish celebrities would just do their jobs and go away. Unfortunately, celebs are now using social media to garner sympathy and to play the victim card when someone disagrees or challenges them on one of their tweets or posts. Then the media starts giving these celebrities even more exposure by writing stories about how they shut these haters down.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-026: No Spiderman shoes for girls?

4/26/2018
More
A few weeks ago a human rights lawyer with nothing better to do and obviously looking for publicity, complained online that target only sold Spiderman themed shoes for boys and not girls and that his daughter was heart-broken when she couldn’t get them. This of course led to other parents complaining that they too were devasted by not having the same selection in the girls section.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-025: How to find coaches for your kid’s teams

4/23/2018
More
As someone who has played and has been a parent of two girls in organized sports, I’ve seen a lot of coaches. A few were volunteers who loved the sport and working with kids. Most however were the parents of one of the players and many were very good while others were there only because there was no one else available and that’s the problem a lot of teams are facing these days, but here’s a suggestion...

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-024: Enough with the booing

4/19/2018
More
As a sports fan i have my favorites and like everyone else, i cheer and clap when my team does well but i don’t boo all that much. I’ve groaned at bad calls or when the other team scores but that’s about it. And most people are the same but there are always a few parents who seem to let the boo birds fly during a kid’s game. Why?

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-023: MeToo, Demi Lovato and mixed messages

4/16/2018
More
The #metoo movement has encouraged women to stand up for themselves and to not accept that being sexually abused is a part of reaching their goals, but the mixed messages from some celebrities who are trying to position themselves as a leader of the #metoo movement, is too confusing.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-022: Introducing you and your kid to the babysitter

4/12/2018
More
One of the greatest developments in parenting has to be the evolution of the babysitter. It allows parents to leave their kids in the care of another person so that they can earn a living or just get away to relax but for many kids and their parents, they may not be comfortable with having someone else come into their lives.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-021: How about self-driving education

4/9/2018
More
Google and a number of other companies are spending billions of dollars developing self-driving cars which are a solution to a problem that we don’t really have and i for one think that they can be spending that kind of money on something that will make the world a better place, education.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-020: What to do with all of your kid’s arts and crafts

4/5/2018
More
With school coming to a close soon, many parents are wondering what to do with all of the arts, crafts and projects that their kids will be bringing home so i have a suggestion that worked for me. Keep some, trash the rest. It may sound mean but kids make a ton of stuff over a school year and you can’t keep it all.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-019: Airport security and your kids

4/2/2018
More
This is the time of year that people start making their vacation plans and for many that includes flying and this is where some parents lose their minds when airport security check their kids. Here’s a valuable tip: prepare your kids for what is going to happen when they check in. Reassure them that you will be there with them, and that the staff are only checking to make sure that they are safe.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-018: Teach your kids to swim

3/29/2018
More
The world health organization estimates that over three hundred and sixty thousand people will drown this year accidently and that can be reduced substantially if parents would take the time to teach their kids to swim. Even if you don’t live near water, you need to teach your kids to swim because it doesn’t take much water to drown.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-017: Personal attacks on social media

3/26/2018

When did personal attacks become part of the discussion? Do high school debate competitions include remarks about an opponent's mental health? When did the right to express your opinion become an invitation to attack? Debate, conversations and discussions have been responsible for major changes in society since the sixties.

Facebook has just come out and admitted that they allowed a company to access information that they weren’t supposed to get and people are very upset. Why? 3/19/2018
More
The senseless murders of kids in Parkland Florida is a perfect example of why the authorities need to get their act together with more money and resources for mental health. A number of people were concerned about a young man, concerned enough to contact the FBI. His Facebook page was filled with images that would worry anyone, but unfortunately, the FBI failed to investigate.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-014: Cultural appropriation

3/15/2018
More
It seems that kids today don’t have enough things to worry about so the social justice warriors are shaming musicians for using music that is not considered to be part of their culture and they’re targeting kids for liking them. The latest example is Bruno Mars, a non-black performer who makes music in the r and b and reggae styles that were created by blacks. The trend is that if you are not from that culture then you are not allowed to use any part of it.

3/12/2018
More
Toys R Us are in big trouble and the latest is that they may close down most or all of their stores and a lot of people are worried that the toy industry will disappear and that’s just nonsense. Do people really think that toys will disappear? When i was a kid we had something called toy stores but they weren’t the size of a stadium. They were usually mom and pop shops that carried the popular toys along with a lot of interesting ones.

The What To Do With The Kids Minute 18-012: The benefits of going to summer camp

3/8/2018
More
This is the time of year that parents should start thinking of sending their kids to summer camp. Many camps participate in camp fairs at the local mall or community center where you’ll meet staff who will explain to you what their camp is all about. And although i am a big fan of the residential camps, there are a ton of specialty camps available.
