暑假在美国

今年准备明年，如今就得动手了 Hi, everyone, we said this program would be ended last time, but then I realized that I need to emphasize the importance of planning for summer. So here I am again. For summer camps, especially those sought after famous camps, you will need a quite long time to do research, to prepare application materials such as test scores, your qualifications, teacher's’ recommendation if it is asked for. You also need to look at your own schedule, your family schedule, and the different options provided by the camp. Therefore, a good camp will largely open their admission process as early as the end of the year, and close it around spring time the next year. Of course you could still have some chances to get in at the last minute, but you might pay extra and less likely get what you want to have. So, with all these said. Although it is still in Summer of this year, many families have started to think about how to spend summer next year. How about you? After all, planning ahead of time, planning for future, are what a responsible person would like to do for their future. If you have question, leave a message to me. I will try to answer. 打工赚零花，义工献爱心，游大学，备开学，暑假在美国大结局 Q：In previous sessions, we have covered topics such as exciting summer camps, hardworking summer school, adventurous vacations, and nice local activities. L: But summer is more than just the contrast between having fun and working hard. My sister, she has lots of work to do but enjoys her job. Q: 是的，夏天并不单纯是辛苦学习开心玩耍的这种对比，对于有些大小孩，夏天也是赚零花钱的时候了，那是既辛苦也愉快的。美国社区里有鼓励青少年尽早独立的传统，朋友邻里之间乐于提供大小孩工作的机会。这可以是家教tutoring，范围可以是学习有关的，也可以是教下棋这样娱乐的。可以是babysitting 看小孩，洗车，dog walking( 遛狗），剪草（mowing）这样偏家务体力的。正规的快餐连锁店，也可以雇佣14岁以上的孩子做收银员Cashier。很多人的第一份赚钱的工作就是从这里开始的。 L：I’m probably too young to work for others, but my older sister provides violin tutoring（私人指导） to elementary kids. She makes good money out of that. She loves working with kids and is very good at playing the violin. I need to find a way to make money when I grow older. My mom has paid me to teach her swimming, which is my starting point. Q: 这么小就赚钱了！真能干啊。what is your plan of making money? L：I think I will write stories and publish books. I want to be an author. It feels good to make money, and an added bonus is that my job will get more serious. I enjoy writing so if I could make a living out of that I’d be extremely happy. I can buy what I want if I use my own money, so my parents don’t have to say that they have to pay for what I want. Q: 赚钱增强独立性与责任感，Lindsay的姐姐给附近小孩子陪练小提琴，Lindsay教妈妈游泳，都是用自己学来的本事赚钱，Lindsay还打算出书挣更多呢。说完赚钱的，还有做义工volunteer。比如去附近医院陪伴病人，去马场照顾马匹，动物收容中心照看流浪猫狗，或者去给穷人分发食物的地方，义工机会也很多。 L：We visited nursing homes when we were at school for trips. Q: Nursing house 是老人院，很多青少年都长期在老人院做义工。另外一件大事就是参观大学，During summer, high school kids also join many college campus tours. They need to prepare for college application. L: And the final thing that we all have to do is to buy the requested school supplies for next school year. Q:最后一件要做的事情就是备好下学期开学所需。一般学校老师会提供一个supply list，夹子了本子了文具了，品牌门类说的清清楚楚，买好了开学带到学校作为一年所需。每个年级都会有不同要求。 L：So, this is our summer. If you think it’s busy, you’re correct. 暑期学校，加强班，自学，在大学里做研究... Q：大家好，我是你们的朋友晴川。终于今天，我们要来说说学习这个事儿了。毕竟学生要学习，虽然在暑假。 L： Hi everyone. I am Lindsay, nice to meet you all here again. Well, study is mandatory (必须的）, even if you don’t like it. I understand. In fact, I’d like using summer to explore or catch up with something. Q: Explore 是探索的意思，一般用来指未曾涉足的领域. 而Catch up 是跟上的意思，就是说进展不尽如意，要赶上去的意思。 L：I prepared a long list of my reading materials before school was over. There are so many good books that I always feel I don’t have enough time to read. My math is also not very good. I plan to do some extra exercises to practice. Hopefully next school year I can show some improvement. I also want to practice my drawing（画画，更多指线条） and painting（画画，颜色涂刷） skills. It needs silence and a longer time to concentrate, and summer is a good opportunity for that. Q: Reading is perhaps the single most important thing in school. Before summer starts, teachers would list reading recommendations（推荐）. Local library sometimes would keep teacher’s reading list for kids to use. 大家会从中选择, 借书，或者下载到电子书上方便旅行时候带走。一个暑假下来，读上十几本书是很常见的。自己不够擅长的地方暑假也可以在家补习或者去补习学校上课加强练习。有些兴趣爱好上学时间来不及安排尝试，也可以在暑假学起来。 L：Our school district （校区，学校管理以居民所在的镇为单位包括12年的公立学校和一年的学前）provides a summer school（夏校）. I know many of my friends signed up（报名） for the summer school programs. But I would rather （宁愿）study at home by myself, with help from my parents. I like to manage my own time and progress. Q: 是的，暑假学校是公立学校提供的补习场所；其它还有各种门类的加强班父母可以付费选择，在这样的培训班有些是为标准化考试有些是为竞赛开设，作为学校教育的补充或者提升。当然互联网也提供了很多资源，Lindsay 就可以利用网络资源宁可自己练习。 L：Those high school kids probably will find some chances to do their research（研究） in college. Q: 高中生有能力和要求的，还会申请附近大学提供给高中生的学习研究机会，利用暑假尝试大学的研究环境, 说不定会发现有意义的课题和发自内心的爱好。 L：I also like foreign languages. I study Italian 意大利语 and Japanese 日语, along with French法语 in summer. Q: Wow, someday you would be an international traveler using all languages you grasp. L: Yes, that’s a skill I’d like to have. 暑假就是不断尝试新领域放飞梦想的好机会啊。难怪新学期到来的时候，常常孩子们会仿佛H焕然一新，个子高了，眼界开了，知识也丰富了，老师们常常感慨，两个月不见，又大了！

Pool party, block party, sleepover party, barbecue dinner party. Parties in summer among neighbors L：Hello ，大家好。How is your Summer? Q: 夏天过得怎么样？彼此问候夏天过得怎么样是美国人的常见客套搭讪的话语。潜台词就是夏天是放假开心不干活的时候。不过，对于Lindsay来说，一个夏天2个多月不见学校里朝夕相处的朋友还是很想念的。 L：It is hard not seeing friends for months. Sometimes I invite my friends over to my house to have a barbeque (烧烤）dinner, a movie, or a sleepover. Occasionally we will meet at a local ice cream store to have a conversation.（谈话） Q: 叫朋友到家里来一起烧烤barbecue，吃饭，看电影，或者过来住一夜。还可以跟朋友们在镇上的冷饮店相聚吃个冰激凌聊聊天。 Sleepover就是把特别好的朋友请到家里，沙发床气垫床支起来，看看朋友的收藏玩具书籍和平时生活的样子，这才是亲密无间共同长大。 L：Some friends are lucky to have pools in their backyard（后院）. Their parents host a pool party for us. We will bring bathing suits（游泳衣）, sunscreen（防晒霜）, and towel（浴巾）. We gather there to have a great time together. Watermelon（西瓜）, ice cream, lemonade（柠檬水）, hot dogs（热狗）, pizza and chips（烤乾的土豆片等）… those are our favorite food while we have parties like that. Their parents are so nice to host it for us! Q: 在朋友家的后院泳池里游泳，吃又可口又凉爽的食物，朋友相聚，这真是幸福的暑假，一起成长的好朋友。 L：Neighbors and friends will have block parties sometimes. It is a community tradition（社区传统）. We just all come out our houses bringing some food, snacks（零食） or drinks, joining the parties and talking. That’s how we connect（联系）. After all, it is summer, we are supposed to stay outside as much as we can. Q: Block Party就是邻里附近的十几家人找个街区空地或者小公园，一起准备食物饮料，也不拘什么东西，只要别太空手而来，就是有个机会聊天增进了解，毕竟是一条街上住着，平时也许都不过是在汽车里进出，夏天这样热情的季节，大家都褪去平时职业套装的严谨，在吃吃喝喝里讲讲学区社区邻里间感兴趣的话题，轻松中熟络感情，这是大家的社区啊。

帆船冲浪出海日光浴...这是长岛的夏天 我们前面讲了夏令营讲了度假，眼花缭乱的，那如果足不出户，就在家附近，有什么有趣的事情干嘛？ L：Of course, there are many. However, we Long Islanders（长岛人） love the beach the most. The beach and ocean is our favorite place to go. My dad loves to pack home made drinks and food in a cooler （冰桶）and we spend hours there. Q: what makes beach so fascinating? L: The ocean is beautiful. The water is blue, cool, and refreshing. The sand is soft and makes a perfect setting to relax. The sky is clear and and the sunshine always warms our bodies. Q：蓝色的大海，柔软的沙滩，温暖的阳光，这使人放松。大家做什么呢？ L：My sister and I love jumping up and down in the ocean’s waves. Sometimes we see crabs and other small ocean life. Seagulls （海鸥） hover low in the sky. We once saw whales （鲸鱼）swimming not too far away from us. My mom loves reading under an umbrella. People can walk along the beach, play volleyball or frisbee （飞碟）, or chat with friends. We all find something interesting to do. The ocean provides a wonderful setting for different activities. Q: 长岛人最喜欢去海滩晒太阳，聊天，散步，读书，游泳，打球，玩飞碟, frisbee is 飞碟。小孩子们喜欢在水里逐浪，看偶尔冒出海滩的螃蟹，有壳的小动物，海鸥低低地飞，还偶尔会有鲸鱼呢！这太有趣了。 L：The beach is open to all people. Long Island is surrounded （围绕）by water. People can get to their favorite beach in only 20 minutes by car, most of the time. We love the beach so much that we would like to spend all possible time there. We all get tanned（皮肤晒黑成阳光色） during summer. Q: Aren’t you afraid of sunburn（晒伤）? L: We apply layers of sunscreen（防晒） before we go out, and reapply （重新涂上）again and again. It does help a lot. Plus the breeze （微风） cools down the temperature, so it doesn’t feel burning hot（灼热）. Q: have you tried water sport? L: My mom once signed me up for a water sport summer camp. We learned how to sail a boat. Younger kids have smaller boats while older kids have bigger boats. We learned how to set up and steer （掌控方向）a sailboat. It was hard and took a lot of work. But the instructor followed us in a motor boat to make sure we are all safe. Q: 长岛有很多水上活动, 驾驶帆船就是很流行的一样，在长岛最东边面对一望无际的大西洋也是冲浪Surfing运动的圣地。很多家庭还喜欢出海钓鱼，也可以朋友们合租大一些的船在日落时候出海尽赏海上落日的美景。 在海边长大是长岛孩子的幸福。这一期，我们专门拿出来说海滩生活。毕竟，夏日与大海密不可分。 下次节目见。

种种度假方式，旅行只是之一 Q：大家好，好久不见了。已经八月了，暑假赛程过半，大家过得如何啊？我们也很久没有更新了，因为，we were on vacation earlier! 早前度假去了！要说暑假什么是最值得盼望的，那当属度假了。青少年都有旺盛的好奇心，对于世界想深入了解，度假虽然短暂，但这打开的窗口所看到的不同世界会深植小小心灵，要不怎么把读万卷书与行万里路相提并论呢。 L：Yes, vacation is the best! During our vacations, we don’t have to follow any repetitive schedule（重复的时间表）, like waking up, doing homework, and then repeating it the next day. On vacations, we step out of our normal life to see an extraordinary world that the local citizens may consider normal. Q: Lindsay，where did you go this summer? L: I went to Beijing, and climbed The Great Wall. I also visited XiAn to admire the amazing Terracotta Warriors （兵马俑）. Our family also went to Chengdu to see the giant pandas, they are so cute! An exciting piece of news is that my parents may take me to visit Paris later. I study French at school as my foreign language. Q: Lindsay刚刚从中国回来，看了长城，兵马俑，和大熊猫，接下来还打算去巴黎呢。Other than visiting different countries and places, hiking, camping, local tours are also very popular among American families. L: Our family tradition is to visit Mirror Lake, which is only a 6 hour drive from our home. We took our dog Buttons with us there. At Mirror Lake we swim, kayak, and bike around it. It’s relaxing（放松） and refreshing （新鲜）. Q: Lindsay这里说到的Kayaking是一种单桨独木舟，在湖里一家人一人一条小船划，想想都很美呢。除此，比如Camping（露营），hiking（爬山），barbecue（烧烤）都是家人朋友一起度过美好时光的好方式。Lindsay 有一条拉布拉多狗叫扣子，也一起去呢。 L：Summer is an opportunity （机会） to enjoy the outdoors （户外）. New York has a very long winter, so I stay inside most of the year. But once summer is here, I would rather spend all my limited time （有限的时间）with it outside in the beautiful nature.

骑马与音乐剧，文武双全夏令营 上次我们说了天才夏令营。这回说说其他种类的夏令营。还是请小主播Lindsay来分享她的体会。 L：Hello everyone, how is your summer so far Q: 大家的暑假过的怎么样啊？在中国可能暑假才刚刚开始吧？但是暑假的起始日期在美国各个校区都有自己的规定。有些校区六月初就开始放暑假，当然开学也会早些。Lindsay, when did your summer vacation start? L: Our school defines summer vacation from June 22nd to September 2nd. It is the best time of the year. Q：你还参加过哪些印象深刻的夏令营 L：Riding camp and drama camp. Q: Riding camp就是骑马夏令营。Drama Camp是一种百老汇形式的戏剧舞台演出夏令营。 L： In riding camp, we learned how to ride horses, take care of them, and how to set up to ride them. Before camp started, you had to buy a special riding uniform of tough pants, a helmet, gloves, and riding boots. Q: 怎么骑马，怎么照顾马，怎么上好马具。还要买骑马套装，那种有保护的裤子，头盔，手套和靴子。在长岛有相当多的马场，骑马是女孩子里热门的爱好。 Q: Tell us more about drama camp. L: In drama camp we put on a musical with our own costumes. We had a script and the counselors picked out our roles. We had props, and a set. Every few days we would have a rehearsal altogether, and at the end when everything was finished, all the other camp kids and our parents came to watch the completed show. 今天我们将主要说一下传说中的所谓天才儿童夏令营。Talented or Gifted Youth. 中文习惯上翻译成天才儿童，其实Talented英文只是说有才能，GIfted 倒是说上天厚爱，有天赋，但是哪里有那么多天才Genius呢。不过，门槛是有的。进入这样的夏令营必须通过一些考试，根据不同年纪，有些是美国标准考试比如SAT， ACT，PSAT，或者IQ考试考量语言逻辑和空间想像力，有些甚至会有专门的老师来进行一对一的智商测试衡量。一般这种夏令营常常依托大学校园，聘请有经验的教师，组织上会更侧重于学业兴趣。这种夏令营在美国有不少，今天，我们主要介绍一下Lindsay和她的姐姐都去过的由约翰霍普金斯大学（Johns Hopkins）主办的CTY(center for talented youth) 夏令营。 Lindsay：Hello！大家好！ 晴川：Can you tell us which subject did you choose in CTY? Lindsay: I took a writing course. 晴川：why did you pick this one? Lindsay: Because I like writing. In normal school days, I don’t think I was chal－lenged enough.（没有足够的挑战） 晴川： Were there any other choice at CTY? Lindsay: there were So many… my sister went to Philosophy （哲学） last year, she was also in Suspension（悬念） and Mystery （神秘）Writing once. There were Psychology（心理学）, Robotics（机器人）, Maths and Computer Science（数学与计算机科学）, Law and Politics（法律与政治）, Ec-onomics（经济学）, I cannot outline列出 all courses, too long to say. If I have time, I might choose all of them except for 除掉maths. Qingchuan: 这么多选择，太幸福了！How did you spend your time there? Lindsay: This is a sleepaway 离家住宿camp. I shared a room with another girl in a college dorm学生宿舍. We wake up at about 7 am, have breakfast, have courses, eat lunch at cafeteria, then have afternoon classes followed with afternoon activities such as board games棋盘游戏, arts and crafts艺术与手工. After everything is done, we have dinner and enjoy evening as a group. No need to work on courses at night. All work is done at daytime. Qingchuan:Tell us more about the fun activities. Lindsay: You can swim, make friendship bracelets友谊手链，女孩子里流行的手工制作, read, paint, play sports and sometimes we had a dance. Qingchuan:周末怎么过呢？ Lindsay: We had a lot of free time and did our laundry洗衣服. We had water gun fights玩水枪战, and had a talent show才艺表演. We would also have a m－ovie night电影之夜. Qingchuan: 宿舍里有大人吗？ Lindsay：Yes，there were adults 成年人there to make sure we were safe. Qingchuan: 你喜欢CTY，能说说最喜欢的是什么？ Lindsay: I liked CTY because there was a lot of freedom. It was enjoyable to make new friends from different places. It was easy to forget about any worries at home when you were learning interesting things and having fun with different people. 晴川：Lindsay觉得这样的夏令营可以在学习自己喜欢的东西的时候忘记很多烦恼，也可以遇到很多不同地方来的新朋友。要知道与有类似兴趣的朋友在一起更容易建立起友谊与沟通。

You can live on site,called residential camp; or go home everyday, called day camp. 晴川：这里Lindsay提到了residential camp, 住宿夏令营。day camp，也就是每天回家只安排白天的活动。which type do you prefer lindsay? LIndsay: residential, of course. 晴川: Why? Lindsay: Well, I like staying away from home because there is a lot of freedom. You can also have a chance to make more friends。 晴川：哈哈，离开家有更多的自由，有更多的机会交朋友。在夏令营做什么呢？ Lindsay：ALmost every camp has its own major theme, such as sport camp, water sport camp, music camp, writing camp, dancing camp, camp for gifted students with many courses to pick from, and even chef training camp … so many to list ….. But typically they were organized by their major theme or courses, with some regular summer fun such as pool time，games or crafts, to relax or bond with your campmates. 晴川: 各个夏令营都有主题，真是丰富多彩。这里提到了运动夏令营sport camp，水上运动夏令营，water sport camp , 比如各种级别的帆船运动或者冲浪运动。还说道了舞蹈夏令营Dancing camp，舞蹈还可以继续细分不同方向比如芭蕾或者现代等等。Lindsay还提到了学习烹饪培养厨师的夏令营chef training camp，以及为智力优秀的小朋友们设立的天才儿童夏令营，camp for gifted students，在这样的夏令营里可以按自己的学习兴趣来选择课程。What camp will you go this summer? Lindsay: I will go to music camp with my sister. 晴川: 和姐姐一起去音乐夏令营。What will you do there? LIndsay: Practice violin and learn new skills with professional teachers. I will perform together within an orchestra. 晴川: 跟专业老师学习小提琴技术。在乐队里一起演奏。需要考试才能进入这样的夏令营吗？ Lindsay: I had recorded my best music piece for the admission. 晴川: 要听录音了解技术水准才能录取。不容易呢。what was the camp you favor the most?
