Ink That Deal (DESCENDENT [2025])
9/9/2025
The Rustic Signal has been lit once more! After performing in front of the camera for RESOLUTION and THE ENDLESS, Peter Cilella now steps behind the camera for his feature film directorial debut DESCENDENT (2025)! We've been looking forward to more directorial work from Peter since we saw his short film OCCUPANT a few years back, so we were very excited to check this movie out. It was a blast to discuss, and we hope everyone enjoys our conversation. As usual, we get into spoilers pretty quickly in this review, so we absolutely encourage everyone to check out the movie first. It's currently available for purchase or rental on all major VOD platforms, and it absolutely deserves your support. Speaking of support, our Kickstarter for the superhero anthology WHERE LEGENDS WALK will have a few days remaining in its campaign when the episode goes up. If you miss the Kickstarter window, the book should be available for purchase soon, with a mid-November release date planned. You can find more details on the book/Kickstarter by visiting wherelegendswalk.com If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: www.letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!

Do Not Profane the Patience of Sean (THE LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE [1974])
7/27/2025
As we enter the fifth year of our podcast, we are so, so grateful to all of our listeners for their time and support. This particular episode is dedicated to Sean, a listener whose support has helped us through some very rough times over the years. Since our pod started off with a review of the Return of the Living Dead franchise, we thought it would be appropriate to celebrate our fifth year by reviewing another zombie movie. We reached out to Sean and asked him to help us decide which movie to review, and we landed on... well, a movie with many, many titles, (Don't Open the Window, Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, No Profanar el Sueño de los Muertos, 悪魔の墓場 and much more) but possibly best known in the U.S. as THE LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE (1974)! This movie from director Jorge Grau is streaming on Shudder as of this episode's release, and we absolutely encourage everyone to give it a watch ahead of listening to our review. And speaking of zombie-centric media, our host Jacob's debut novel THE CHANGE is on sale now from Oddity Prodigy Productions! This tale of hope, zombies, and rock & roll can be ordered wherever you get your books, but here's the link for it on Bookshop: https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-change/d2beab56340d82cb?ean=9781733393850 If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: http://www.letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!

Animal in a Box (GRAVE ENCOUNTERS [2011])
5/6/2025
Our Christmas episode is still coming (albeit way, way after December), but we're taking a quick detour to the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital. It's Episode 76, so it's the perfect time to have our resident 76ers fan Jacob choose a movie to review. And being our resident found-footage fan as well, for our latest episode Jacob has chosen GRAVE ENCOUNTERS (2011), written and directed by The Vicious Brothers. We also discuss the Kickstarter that Jacob just launched for his debut horror-fantasy novel THE CHANGE! You can check out the link below for more details, and any support is greatly appreciated: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/oddityprodigy/the-change-a-novel If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: http://www.letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!

Gotta Love Hope (THINGS WILL BE DIFFERENT [2024] feat. Michael Felker)
2/14/2025
The Rustic Signal has been lit! Although this episode is being released later than we'd hoped (although if we're reviewing a time travel movie, maybe our delays don't count this time around?), we're very excited for everyone to check out our discussion of the latest release from Rustic Films: THINGS WILL BE DIFFERENT (2024). And even better, we're so delighted to be joined by the movie's writer/director Michael Felker for a special interview! We had a truly fabulous time chatting with Michael about the movie, his work on previous Rustic Films features, and much more (and probably more JCVD than any of us anticipated). We can't thank him enough for his time, and we really hope everyone enjoys the episode! If you haven't seen the movie yet, as of this episode's release it's currently streaming on all major VOD platforms, with more details available here: www.magnetreleasing.com/thingswillbedifferent/watch-at-home/ For more information on Michael Felker and Last Life Films, you can visit: www.lastlifefilms.com/ As mentioned in the episode, if you have some funds to spare, we'd greatly appreciate it if you could consider donating to the GoFundMe to help Ben Mekler and his family out after their home was lost in the Eaton Fire: www.gofundme.com/f/ben-and-kirby-lost-everything-in-the-eaton-fire/ If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: www.letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!

Give Me the Stones (WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON [1993] feat. Duane Swierczynski)
11/27/2024
This one is something special. That statement doesn't just apply to the movie WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON (1993) from director Anthony Hickox, which is the subject of this new episode. As much as the movie itself made for an entertaining discussion, what makes it special is that we're joined on this episode by returning guest Duane Swierczynski! We had a wonderful time chatting with Duane in our LORD OF ILLUSIONS episode a couple years back, and we're so thrilled to have him back on the pod to talk about the next installment in the WARLOCK series, as well as the Holiday Book Drive currently underway for 2024 via The Evelyn Swierczynski Foundation (benefitting The Children's Hospital of Los Angeles). You can learn more about The Evelyn Swierczynski Foundation and donate to them directly at: https://www.teameviefoundation.com/ We also absolutely encourage everyone to check out Duane's work (including CALIFORNIA BEAR and the recently reprinted SECRET DEAD MEN), and you can visit his official site for more details: https://www.gleefulmayhem.com/ The Commando-inspired "Infinity Tree" design from the fabulous Erica Henderson mentioned in today's episode can be found on her Threadless page: https://ericafails.threadless.com/ If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: https://letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!

Something Beyond Comprehension (THE EXORCIST [1973])
10/27/2024
It's our 2024 Halloween special! The trailer for the subject of our new episode refers to "Something beyond comprehension," which also applies to our pod as one of our hosts has never seen this horror classic before. For our Halloween celebration this year, our host Jacob has chosen THE EXORCIST (1973) from director William Friedkin and writer William Peter Blatty! It's a bit daunting tackling a movie that casts a shadow as long as this one, but we had a great time discussing the movie from both the perspective of a first-time viewer and two hosts whose perspectives on the movie may have evolved a bit since they first saw it decades ago. We really hope everyone enjoys this review, but most of all we hope everyone has a very happy Halloween this year. Some Few Remarks Upon a Pod Most Dire (WARLOCK [1989])
10/20/2024
It's our second Steve Miner movie in a row, as we're reviewing WARLOCK (1989) in our latest episode! We thought this would be an interesting movie to discuss after having so much fun talking about HOUSE (1985) in our previous episode, but we bumped it up the priority list after our host Eric watched its sequel WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON (1993). A review of that sequel is coming up soon (with a very special guest!), but before then we'll have our Halloween special, and Jake announces his pick for that episode at the end of our WARLOCK chat. In the meantime, we had a great time discussing a terrific script from David Twohy, along with some scenes trimmed from the original script, the directorial work of Steve Miner, and of course the fabulous central performance by the late Julian Sands. We really hope everyone enjoys this one. If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: https://letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!

Realistic Battle Damage (HOUSE [1985])
10/7/2024
Believe it or not, this episode's been a long time coming for us. We've talked about covering this movie since the beginning of the pod, but we finally sat down to review HOUSE (1985)! This film from director Steve Miner and writers Fred Dekker and Ethan Wiley has been a favorite of our host Nick for many, many years, and it was a delight to finally discuss it on the show. Although this review is not without its cost, as Nick has to endure far more comic talk than he could have possibly anticipated before we hit "record." But we had a blast chatting about the movie, taboo tooth-brushing techniques, Herculean efforts to unearth four eighties comic books, introducing the K.R.E.O.N. certification system and much more. We really hope everyone enjoys the review. Doc Duncan Can't Lose (THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN [1971])
9/25/2024
Arise and come in, child. Enter for yet another episode of the Scary Stuff Podcast. After going on our first podcast road trip, we're reviewing a movie that kicks off with a road trip gone awry: THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN (1971)! Directed by Bernard McEveety and starring Sam Peckinpah regulars L.Q. Jones (who also was a producer, uncredited writer and wrote the movie's prose novelization) and Strother Martin, we had a fabulous time discussing this surreal 70's plunge into the era of Satanic Panic. As of this episode's release the movie is currently available on Tubi (and has a very nice blu-ray release from Arrow Video) and we absolutely encourage checking the movie out ahead of our review. We really hope everyone enjoys this one. Passionate Crime (SPELLCASTER [1988])
8/31/2024
Last year we accompanied our Doug Jones Day episode with a review of the cult classic SPOOKIES, featuring an ensemble of characters under siege from an evil sorcerer and his peculiar assortment of supernatural minions. This year we're following a similar pattern, but swapping out the Jay Estate in New York for Castello Di Giove in Italy, a locale that will be familiar to fans of the movies of Charles Band and Empire International Pictures. For our latest episode we're reviewing SPELLCASTER (filmed in 1988, but not released until 1992) from director Rafal Zielinski, featuring Adam Ant, Bunty Baily and KROQ-FM's own Richard Blade. We do start the episode with a bit of sad talk about recent life events for our hosts, but we had a tremendously fun time discussing the movie afterwards and we hope everyone enjoys the episode. If you want to skip over the sad bits, the movie discussion begins around the 13:30 mark. As of this release, the movie is free to stream on both Tubi and the Youtube channel for Full Moon Pictures, and absolutely recommend checking out the movie before listening to this review. And also be sure to see SPOOKIES if you haven't already, as it comes up a LOT in this review and is becoming an oddly integral movie for our pod. Doug Jones Day V (MIMIC [1997])
6/29/2024
We're back! Yet again! Apologies for another long absence, and a sincere thank you to all of our listeners who reached out in the interim. We'll get into more details on where we've been in the next episode, but we weren't going to miss our annual Doug Jones Day celebration. This year it was Jacob's turn to pick the movie, and after picking LEGION a few years back, this year he chose another movie that features both Doug Jones and Charles Dutton: MIMIC from director Guillermo Del Toro! We should be back with another episode in late July, but we hope you enjoy our fifth annual Doug Jones episode. If you like what you hear, feel free to leave us a review wherever you get your pods. The Friends of T.F. Merrit (NIGHT OF THE GHOUL [2021, Snyder & Francavilla])
8/6/2023
It's our very first comic book episode! Although we've reviewed several movie adaptations of comics in previous episodes (SWAMP THING, BLADE, CONSTANTINE, etc), we're delighted to review our first comic miniseries on the podcast: NIGHT OF THE GHOUL from writer Scott Snyder and artist Francesco Francavilla. We get into what prompted our first comic review during the review, but this was a delight to record and we're so excited to welcome a special guest back to our pod: Jeremiah Jones-Goldstein! If you haven't read the comic miniseries from Best Jackett Press yet, you can read digital versions via Comixology / Amazon Prime, but we absolutely encourage you to pick up either the single issues or the trade paperback versions from your local comic shop. Please support our guest Jeremiah Jones-Goldstein by checking out his recent appearances on the Magazines & Monsters Podcast, or by visiting his comics site at https://comicscomicscomics.blog/ Our hosts Nick and Jake will also be in attendance at the ACME Show being held by our local comic shop Captain Blue Hen comics. That event will take place from 5pm to 9pm EST at the Newark Arts Alliance on August 19th! Make Books With Friends (HAUNTED REELS feat. David Lawson Jr)
7/30/2023
Not only are we delighted to welcome special guest David Lawson Jr from Rustic Films back to the pod, but this episode marks his induction into our own Five-Timer's Club! David was our first appeared on our pod way back in our SHE DIES TOMORROW episode, and now a few years later he's back to discuss the horror anthology he has curated for Dark Matter Ink: HAUNTED REELS! We talk a bit about our favorite horror movie anthologies along the way, but mainly we're here to celebrate the release of a very special collection. David's assembled an amazing lineup of contributors that includes several creators we've talked about on the pod before (Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead, Ariel Vida, C. Robert Cargill, Graham Skipper, Gary Sherman and many, many more), and we're absolutely delighted for everyone involved. You can see the full table of contents and order a copy directly from the publisher at this link: https://darkmattermagazine.shop/pages/haunted-reels We hope everyone enjoys the chat with David, we hope everyone picks up a copy of the book, and as always thanks so much for listening! Get Past the Messy (THE AMITYVILLE HORROR [1979])
7/23/2023
Please join us in wishing a happy house-warming to our host Nick Leamy! Nick detailed some of the home-buying headaches he and his family were dealing with back in our SPOOKIES episode, but that's all been settled and everyone's settling into a lovely new home. To celebrate this, we asked Nick to pick a movie to celebrate and he chose the original THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979), from director Stuart Rosenberg and starring Margot Kidder, James Brolin and Rod Steiger. Our opinions run a pretty wide spectrum on this one, which made for a fun discussion and we really hope everyone enjoys listening! Also, as mentioned in the episode's intro, with the current WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ongoing we highly encourage everyone to consider donating to the Entertainment Community Fund to help those affected by work stoppages: https://entertainmentcommunity.org/how-get-help-and-give-help-during-work-stoppage If you'd like to follow us on social media, we just updated our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles below: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: https://letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!

Doug Jones Day IV (THE DARKLING [2000])
6/29/2023
Happy Doug Jones Day everybody! It's our fourth year in a row celebrating our favorite horror holiday: the anniversary of the day Doug Jones worked on the set of Mike Flanagan's movie ABSENTIA. This year we're celebrating by watching THE DARKLING (2000), a USA original tv movie starring F Murray Abraham and Aidan Gillen (and of course Doug Jones, in the role of "Shadow Master"). As of this release the movie is a little difficult to track, but don't worry if you haven't seen it: we walk through the movie's plot as part of the discussion. This was a real blast to record, but we're always delighted to celebrate Doug Jones Day each year. We hope you enjoy the episode, and thanks so much for listening!! 6/25/2023
Our not-quite-lost-but-certainly-long-delayed review of BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON (2006) is here! As mentioned in our SPOOKIES review, we recorded this episode back in January, but wanted to come back from hiatus with something else before this episode was released. Big thanks to everyone who voted for this movie in our Robert Englund poll, and apologies for the delay! Up next is our fourth annual "Doug Jones Day" episode, and we're very excited for everyone to check it out. We'll be reviewing THE DARKLING, a USA tv-movie from the year 2000 starring Aidan Gillen and F. Murray Abraham. 5/30/2023
We're back! Apologies for the unplanned hiatus, but we give an update on where we've been at the start of this return episode. After that, we're reviewing the movie SPOOKIES (1986), which is currently available on Shudder as of this release. If you want to skip straight to the movie stuff, the timecode for that is 00:18:58. We haven't forgotten about our previously announced episode for BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON. We recorded that back in January, but we didn't want it to be our first episode back after some time away. The BEHIND THE MASK episode should be out just before Doug Jones Day hits on June 30th! The Nice Harvest (THE LEECH [2022])
12/30/2022
Happy (very-belated) Holidays everyone!! It has been a bit of a rough month for all three of us here at the pod (some of these reasons are mentioned in the episode), so we knew going into this recording there was a good chance it wouldn't be out before Christmas. Sadly that proved to be the case, but we're glad the episode was finished in time for the end of 2022. And we're even more delighted to be reviewing another feature starring Jeremy Gardner (alongside Graham Skipper, Taylor Zaudtke and Rigo Garay) on the pod: THE LEECH (2022) from writer/director Eric Pennycoff! Our host Eric first saw the movie at this year's Chattanooga Film Fest, and has been looking forward to covering it on the pod ever since. Unfortunately the fore-mentioned rough month lead to this being more of a rambling/cathartic episode than we intended, but hopefully we're closing out 2022 on an entertaining note. We absolutely encourage everyone to check out the movie (currently available on VOD, blu-ray and the Arrow streaming service) before listening to this episode. Again, happy holidays everyone and thanks so much for listening!! CW: abortion, suicide (both of which are elements of the movie and are likewise discussed in this review)
