7620: Filmmaker Susana Darwin "Flag Act" on Lunchtime Conversations 6-4-24

6/4/2024
In this interview segment Karen Carmichael chats with Susana Darwin about the success of her short film Flag Act. After many years working in politics, the law, and publishing, Susana Darwin joyfully returned to her early passion for film when she put her narrative short Hatboxes into production. That award-winning film appeared in 15 film festivals and conferences worldwide. In 2016, Susana produced For the World: The Montessori School of Englewood, a documentary short about a school on Chicago’s South Side. Susana moved with her wife in 2018 to St. Petersburg, Florida, an exceptionally film-supportive city. Joining a writer/actor group made Susana part of a network of talented people who have contributed directly to the launch of her award-winning short film Longer in 2019. In 2023, Susana released Flag Act, which she wrote and directed. “With anti-democratic impulses on the rise,” she says, “the majority of us who believe in democracy need a boost of courage, and a hearty laugh never hurts. People gasp aloud at how timely Flag Act is.” Susana is also currently at work on several short and feature-length screenplays and a novel, in addition to creations in other forms of visual art. Her other passions include aloha shirts, fat novels, political organizing, and outdoor music festivals. 7615: St. Petersburg Chief of Police, Anthony Holloway on "Lunchtime Conversations" June 2024

6/1/2024
RadioStPeteINSIDER news director Nanette Wiser spoke with the distinguished and gracious St. Petersburg Chief of Police, Anthony Holloway about police mentoring and local youth programs funded and supported by the City and his department. He told us that youth programs are more than fun and games, they are a way to support positive behaviors, give young people the opportunity to pursue their passions (sports, but also arts, and STEM) that might not be available to them, and foster positive relationships between the police and young people of all ages. This is not just a summer mission, it’s a year-round commitment. https://police.stpete.org/ YOUTH PROGRAMS - BACKGROUND SPPD has received the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant three times and has funded programs to provide positive activities for youth with a foundation of education by removing economic barriers for participation while diverting them from potential criminal activity. Their projects involve collaboration and serve youth in a proactive rather than a reactive manner, while reinforcing positive ongoing relationships among youth, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations. Creating community-based positive opportunities for youth reduces juvenile crime and victimization while enhancing community safety, and quality-of-life issues. Our prior project was featured in the “Spotlight” of the COPS Office publication for funded partners and received national recognition. SPPD’s prior projects have included educational stipends for graduating high school seniors who were selected by their principals for their excellent character, hard-working nature (extracurricular activities and outside employment) and need for a little extra support due to various challenges. These students enjoyed a day of engagement with SPPD (forensics, training, K-9s) and then got to meet the Chief. The grant also supported partnerships with six grassroot anti-violence organizations and religious organizations focusing on youth. In the following year, the project included support for twenty non-profit youth sports leagues and additional assistance to defray field costs in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department. Additional youth sports events were held in partnership with the Tampa Bay Rays to increase access and participation in softball geared for at-risk girls. The grant also supported a summer and school-term tutoring project for youth participating in the St. Petersburg Police Athletic League. 2023-2024 In the current grant (ending 9/30/24) , SPPD was funded the full $175,000 to increase exposure to the arts, while providing educational mentorship. We are partnering with The Shirley Proctor Puller Foundation to assist transitioning middle school students to excel in high school and provide clarity about career paths with an innovative curriculum. To ensure youth have a variety of opportunities to participate, we are supporting (1) art education fields trips through the Bill Edwards Foundation, (2) educational materials for after-school programs for Title 1 children at Great Explorations, (3) scholarships for students to attend art camp at the Morean Arts Center, and (4) staff support to increase youth participation in performance arts and liaison support with the schools through Arts Conservatory for Teens. We will also provide funding to the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, Inc for youth related education. Chief Holloway told us they are in the process of applying for a fourth year of funding with a project focused on STEM and workforce readiness for St. Petersburg youth. BUT THERE’S MORE In addition, through their partnership with Gulf Coast JFCS and the CALL program – nonviolent and noncriminal youth related calls are diverted to trained social workers and a specialized Youth Engagement Specialist who responds and follows up with families to link with services. SPPD also regularly receives funding from organizations like...

7614: "Arts Alive" w/Bill DeYoung: Randy Wayne White 6-1-24 Airs Saturdays at 12:15pm on 96.7 FM RadioStPete

6/1/2024
In September 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall, as a Category 4, at Sanibel Island on Florida’s southwestern coast. Between the 120 miles-per-hour winds and the 12-foot storm surge, the tiny barrier island didn’t stand a chance. Homes and businesses were either destroyed or severely damaged, numerous people drowned, and a section of the causeway linking Sanibel to the mainland was literally blown away, making it difficult for first responders and law enforcement to assess and assist. New York Times bestselling novelist Randy Wayne White, a resident of Sanibel, “rode out” the storm. On today’s Arts Alive! podcast, White says he did it, for the most part, to observe and take notes. He wanted to find out what it felt like in the middle of a tropical cyclone, a natural occurrence that he says only becomes a disaster when man is involved. He also confesses he probably shouldn’t have done it. Nearly two years later, the Sanibel home he shares with his wife isn’t completely rebuilt yet. They’ve been living a nomadic life, in various parts of the state, until they get the green light. Should be soon, he explains. White has just published One Deadly Eye, the 27th book in his series about brilliant marine biologist (and global bad guy-buster) Marion “Doc” Ford. This time, it’s personal. The hurricane that pulverizes Dinkin’s Bay, Doc Ford’s longtime home base, is never given a name in One Deadly Eye. It simply exists, and it’s the book’s major character, even though Ford is, as always, the protagonist. He, too, rides out the storm – and then must contend with a ruthless band of Russian mercenaries, whose plan is to descend on the island in the immediate wake of the storm, before any police can get out there safely. Once ensconced, they’ll rob the area’s more expensive homes, where there’s valuable artwork and other prizes for the plucking. And if some innocents get hurt, well that’s just too bad. On the podcast, White discusses Ian, Florida, the insurance business, hurricanes past … and how he skillfully crafted fiction from fact for One Deadly Eye. He’ll sign books in St. Pete this weekend: Sunday (June 2), 12-3 p.m. at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille, Jungle Terrace; Monday (June 3) 12-3 p.m. at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille, St. Pete Pier; 7 p.m. Monday at Coastal Creative/Tombolo Books (info here). #randywaynewhite #artsalive #billdeyoung #stpetecatalyst #docford #tampabay #radio #radiostpete

7609: HISTORYically St. Pete with Rui Farias; Jessy Breckenridge: Meddling-The Women Who Built St. Petersburg

6/1/2024
HISTORYically St. Pete with Rui Farias is a weekly conversation where the St. Petersburg Museum of History executive director explores the truths, and myths of the people and events that created the Sunshine City. Located on the St. Pete Pier, the Museum of History has been sharing the stories of the Sunshine City for 102 years and we are happy to share those stories with you here on this podcast. The late “Godfather of Soul” James Brown, who played the Manhattan Casino back in the day, sang in 1966 that “It’s a man's, man's, world”. But maybe not so much here in the Sunshine City. Today we’re going to look at the roles women played in the history of growth of St. Petersburg. Today’s guest is Jessy Breckenridge, the Archives & Collections Manager for the Museum of History, and curated one of the museum’s most popular exhibits, Meddling – The Women Who Built St. Pete. Somewhere between preserving and protecting our city’s rich history and helping hundreds of residents and researchers discover treasures in our archives, Jessy found the time to curate Meddling, and while doing so, uncovered quite a bit of untold St. Pete history about the pioneering women (business owners, doctors, lawyers and wives/mothers) who helped grow the city and were ahead of their time. They talk about how individual women accomplished amazing feats here in St. Pete but more importantly, how their collaboration and connections steered the path of the city at the early women’s clubs, were much more than just afternoon tea. The history of women’s suffrage, the marches and the protests, is explored and Jessy talks about the struggle for the women’s right to vote in St. Pete. Stop by the Museum of History and to see Medding – The Women Who Built St. Pete, and five other galleries of St. Pete history. The Museum is located on the St. Pete Pier and is open seven days a week. https://spmoh.com/ #history #ruifarias #stpetersburgmuseumofhistory #HISTORYicallystpete #sunshinecity #floridahistory #stpetersburghistory #womensrights #stpetewomen #womenwhobuiltstpete #meddlingwomen # Jessy Breckenridge #tampabay #radio #radiostpete
