In the last episode we said goodbye to Phase 1 and are on to Phase 2 with Iron Man 3. It came out in 2013 and follows Tony and Pepper in the aftermath of the Battle of New York. We’re talking about the first Avengers film this week. We finally get to see the culmination of these passed 5 films, book ending Phase One nicely. Thor came out in 2011 and was the film that brought the Asgardian into the MCU fold. This hero is a bit different because he’s an actual god, rather than a souped-up human. We also get introduced to the God of Mischief Loki, the Allfather Odin, and in one uncredited scene, Hawkeye. Thor, at least in terms of the MCU, is the only hero who has a long tradition, outside of pop culture, reaching all the way back to the Viking age. Iron Man 2 came out in 2010. This was the film that introduced us to War Machine and Black Widow. Continuing 6 months after the events of the first Iron Man, this film was an exploration of Tony Stark’s inability to deal with coming out as Iron Man, and being the world’s peacekeeper. The Incredible Hulk came out like a month after the first Iron Man in 2008 as the second movie in the MCU. This one is a bit weird because it was a sequel/reboot of Eric Bana’s 2003 Hulk movie, which is not part of the MCU. And even though Ed Norton has an extremely accomplished career, he’s the only actor, playing a major character outside of Terrance Howard, that was Thanosed from the MCU. Have a question or a theory? The first Iron Man came out in 2008. Even though other films had come out of Marvel Studios previously, this was the film that kicked off the MCU as we know it. This film also serves as an origin story for the MCU’s version of Iron Man. You could also say that this movie sort of reignited Robert Downey Jr’s career. Captain America: The First Avenger came out in 2011 as the 5th film in the MCU, but since almost all the film happens in the 40s, it’d technically be considered 1st chronologically. The movie follows the story of the Human Torch, sorry Captain America, in his journey from frail weakling to the super soldier who goes around punching Nazis.
