Allergies occur when the body’s immune system identifies exposure to a substance as harmful. The immune system produces an allergic response due to an immunoglobulin E-mediated disease, releasing histamine and inflammatory mediators from mast cells within the body. Individuals with genetic predisposition to having a response to allergens changes from a non-allergic state to allergic state, producing the IgE. Once this individual is exposed again to the allergen, they have a sensitivity to the allergen and develop IgE antibodies specific to allergens, cascading into an allergic response with the release of histamine and inflammatory mediators from mast cells within the body. A mast cell is part of the immune system and contains granules full of histamine and heparin. Mast cells are the cells in charge of allergic and inflammatory responses to allergens. Histamine causes smooth muscle constriction, mucus secretion, vascular permeability, and sensory nerve stimulation, resulting in allergic rhinitis symptoms.There are many different types of allergies, depending upon the trigger and time of year: drug allergies, food allergies, latex allergies, insect allergies, skin and eye allergies, and lastly indoor and outdoor allergies. Indoor and outdoor allergies are also referred to as hay fever, seasonal, perennial or nasal allergies.
