Soul on Soul with Phinesse Podcast

The Human Trafficking Prevention Project (HTPP), a partnership between the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service and the University of Baltimore School of Law, focuses on reducing the collateral consequences of criminal legal involvement for survivors of human trafficking and those populations made most vulnerable to exploitation. The HTPP also ensures that survivors and other individuals can easily access free legal representation for various civil legal matters. Phinesse Demps, Host/Producer, is joined by a special guest Heather Heiman and Jessica Emerson Heather Heiman, Esq. (she/her) – Human Trafficking Prevention Project Manager, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service Heather manages the HTPP pro bono program at Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, the largest provider of pro bono civil legal services in the state, where she provides direct representation to HTPP clients and facilitates case placement with volunteer attorneys through MVLS’ pro bono network. She has spearheaded HTPP community outreach in the Baltimore area and co-hosts monthly legal clinics with community partners, as well as training extensively on criminal record relief, credit repair, and other topics related to civil legal services for trafficking survivors and individuals in the commercial sex industry. Jessica Emerson, LMSW, Esq. (she/her), Director, Human Trafficking Prevention Project Ms. Emerson began the Human Trafficking Prevention Project (“HTPP”) at the University of Baltimore School of Law in August of 2015. Before founding the HTPP, Ms. Emerson was a staff attorney and Equal Justice Works Fellow at the Women’s Law Center of Maryland, where she began an innovative project focused on addressing the criminalization of sex trafficking survivors.

The classically trained Neika Simone is our special guest. Simone talks about her musical journey and drops off her latest song! Neika Simone started singing, as did many artists, in her hometown church’s youth choir. Her parents took notice of her interest in music and enrolled her in piano lessons at the age of 7. That was a wise move as music would become a driving force in her life. Neika Simone became a classically trained pianist and vocalist and began writing music as a teenager. Upon high school graduation, Neika Simone attended Elizabeth City State University where she earned a B.A. degree in Music (piano). She later attended Norfolk State University and graduated with a Master of Music Education degree (voice). Over the years, Neika Simone’s love for jazz grew. She was inspired most by the phenomenal Ella Fitzgerald and many of her contemporaries. As she continued to develop her skills, she began performing with bands such as Left Turn Right Dance Band and Fouray. It was during that time she found her place in the sounds of smooth jazz and began to sing and write music for this genre. Neika Simone’s song lyrics are inspired by her experiences, future hopes, and desires. Currently, Neika Simone is not only a songwriter and performer; she is also a music teacher who enjoys teaching chorus, voice, and piano. She and her husband reside in the Richmond, Virginia area

Phinesse sits down with the talented Terence Thompson. Terence Thompson is a versatile producer, songwriter, artist, and musician. Over the span of his career, Terence has collaborated with a diverse group of artists, musicians, and producers across all genres of music including Teddy Riley of Blackstreet to prolific jazz drummer and producer Nate Smith. It was Terence who hand-picked and recorded the music for Michael Jackson’s “Heaven Can Wait”’ which was produced primarily by Nate Smith for Terence’s production company.

Phinesse interviews the one and only Jeff Washington: While born in New York City, Jeff Washington has lived much of his Life in Philadelphia Pa. His skills as a Guitarist, Songwriter, and, Performer have been honed through many years Of hard work. Jeff is an excellent guitarist in All styles of modern music performing a diverse array of Funk, Blues, Jazz, Rock, and R&B. Combine this with his talents as a Vocalist, Songwriter, and, keyboardist, you have a dynamic package.
