Only Three Lads: Clive Farrington from When In Rome - Top 5 Dance Hits, Part 2

4/30/2024
Here's the thrilling conclusion of our conversation with Clive Farrington from When In Rome, where we discuss our Top 3 Dance Hits...plus, as you may have gathered from last week, a whole lot more! In both podcasting and in life, when you need a friend, don't look to a stranger. Well, unless you've never listened to O3L before...in which case, you should totally look to a stranger. But if you wait around a while, we'll make you fall for us. We promise you we will. This week, we cover the songs that were hits in the dance clubs and on the dance charts. One such song was "The Promise," the emotionally charged synth-pop smash by UK band When In Rome, which hit #1 on the US Hot Dance chart on June 11, 1988. Since then, it has become a beloved classic - on radio, at weddings, on movies and TV. Serendipitous, then, that our Third Lad this week is none other than singer, songwriter and original member of When In Rome UK, Clive Farrington! Fresh off the '80s Cruise with musical partner Andrew Mann, When In Rome UK is busy working on a new album - including the new single "2 Fix Us." On top of being a great musician, Clive is a passionate and knowledgeable music fan with a flair for storytelling. You can also hear Clive Farrington Friday and Saturday nights on his villageradio.net show Weekend Dance Trance. Special thanks to Paul Richison for the introduction! Decibel Geek Podcast - The Best & Worst of Aerosmith 1993-2012 - Ep572

4/29/2024
We're back this week to examine an era for a classic band that resulted in huge sales but possible long-term damage as we consider The Best & Worst of Aerosmith 1993-2012. Coming off the heels of back-to-back successes 'Permanent Vacation' and 'Pump,' Aerosmith was riding high. Those two albums opted to inject a more commercial flavor to their sound and the results spoke for themselves. Heading into the 90's, the band leaned further in that direction going forward with sometimes mixed results. In this episode we'll pick our favorite and least favorite tracks from 'Get a Grip,' 'Nine Lives,' 'Just Push Play,' 'Honkin' on Bobo,' and 'Music From Another Dimension.' Aerosmith sold a ton of albums through these releases so their bank accounts approved of them. However, did they push things too far and alienate hardcore fans? We discuss this entire era, songs that got left off, drama behind the scenes, and much more. It's an hour-plus of Aerosmith discussion covering an era that rarely gets brought up. Is that for a reason? Did we find some gold among these albums? Listen and find out! We hope you enjoy The Best & Worst of Aerosmith 1993-2021 and SHARE with a friend! The Devil's Music 61: Joe Pompeo

4/29/2024
Joe Pompeo is a senior correspondent at Vanity Fair and an author. His first book “Blood And Ink: The Scandalous Jazz Age Double Murder That Hooked America on True Crime” was a New York Times Book Review Best True Crime pick of 2022. He’s also written for The New Yorker, New York Magazine, and many other publications. He's also a longtime super-fan and admirer of the early L.A. punk scene. In this episode, Joe and hostess Pleasant Gehman discuss the murder of Jane King, an aspiring actress who fell prey to The Hillside Stranglers. Because Jane was dating Rick Wilder of The Berlin Brats and Mau Maus, she frequented The Masque, Hollywood’s infamous underground punk club. Like the Black Dahlia, who became more famous after death than in life, Jane’s tragic death is also the subject of an article Joe wrote for the 30th Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue titled “Death And The Masque”. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Bad Company - Bad Company (The Debut Album)

4/27/2024
On May 24, 1974, the world were introduced to new "supergroup" on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song record label with the self-titled debut of Bad Company. Sporting a world-class lineup of Paul Rodgers (Free) on vocals, Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople) on guitar, Boz Burrell (King Crimson) on bass and Simon Kirke (Free) on drums, Bad Company were seasoned veterans of the studio and the road. After becoming disenchanted with their previous bands, the guys got together to form a straight ahead hard rock act that was built for American rock radio and to play live. And while the record went gold in their home of the UK, Bad Company (1974) is 5x platinum in the US. Paul Rodgers provides can go from singing with raw power on Rock Steady to the sweet Seagull to the soulful lament in Ready For Your Love. Ralphs big guitar riffs would help define what 70s hard rock was and the rhythm section of Burrell and Kirke were steady and creative. Though only two songs were released as official singles (Can't Get Enough & Movin' On), US rock radio fans have become familiar with the entire album thanks to DJs digging into this record for half a century. Shout It Out Loudcast: "Carnival Of Souls: The Final Sessions"

4/27/2024
This week Tom & Zeus review the 1997 grunge influenced KISS album, "Carnival Of Souls: The Final Sessions" This was KISS' 17th studio album and the 22nd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Carnival Of Souls is a very polarizing KISS album. The album was recorded with the Revenge era KISS lineup right before the KISS Reunion. However, it was not released immediately. Bootleg copies of the album were wildly circulated and the band then decided to release the album on October 28, 1997. The band did not promote the album, nor tour on the album. It also was deemed to be KISS trying to be grunge. The album was produced by Alice In Chains producer, Toby Wright. The songs were dark and heavy with a lot of grunge like qualities. This may have suited the Revenge era KISS, especially Gene Simmons, but not Paul Stanley. This ended up becoming the last non-makeup KISS album and the last album with Bruce Kulick as well. This is the only album to feature Bruce Kulick on lead vocals on a KISS song, the last track on the album, "I Walk Alone." As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. Find out who loves this album and who calls this album "Music From The Elder Part Two" and if that's a positive thing. Oh and don't miss the discussion of another Gene Simmons classic song title.
