Ugly American Werewolf in London: Prince - Purple Rain

5/11/2024
Coming off the success of his 1999 album, Prince took everything to another level with 1984's Purple Rain. The album featured 5 singles that would get major airplay on different radio formats (pop, rock, r&b, dance) and MTV. The album would sell over 25 million copies worldwide but it was also the soundtrack to the movie of the same name which grossed over $70 million. Prince not only won Grammys for the album but also earned an oscar for the title track. Prince's unabashed sexuality oozed from every aspect of his performance in the movie and the videos and was reinforced by his band, The Revolution. From pop greats (I Would Die 4 U), rockin dance tracks (Let's Go Crazy), personal epics (Purple Rain) and emotional hits (When The Doves Cry), Prince saw his tunes go up the charts of different musical genres. But his overt sexuality, especially in songs like Darling Nikki, irked parents including Tipper Gore who included him among the Filthy 15 during her PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) hearings before Congress. However, the extraordinary talent of Prince as a songwriter, instrumentalist, singer and performer won out in the end and this is the album that sent him to heights from which he never came down. It may not be the hard/prog/classic/heavy rock we normally cover but Purple Rain was hugely important in the development of our generation's understanding of what music was and we're happy to celebrate it's 40th! Rock is Lit: Kim Wright On Her Novel ‘Last Ride to Graceland’ with Stephanie Myers and Cador Jones On Elvis’s Alleged “Lovechildren"

5/10/2024
In the first segment of Episode 53, we're exploring the heart of the South with a literary journey that’s as soulful as it is adventurous. Joining us is the award-winning author Kim Wright, whose novel ‘Last Ride to Graceland’ takes us on a road trip filled with mystery, music, and the enduring legacy of Elvis Presley. In ‘Last Ride to Graceland’, blues musician Cory Beth Ainsworth is barely scraping by after her mother’s death when she discovers a priceless piece of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia hidden away in a shed out back of the family’s coastal South Carolina home: the car Elvis Presley drove the day he died. A backup singer for the King, Cory’s mother, Laura “Honey” Berry, was at Graceland that fateful day in August 1977. She quickly returned home to Beaufort and married her high school sweetheart. Yearning to uncover the secrets of her mother’s past—and possibly her own identity—Cory decides to drive the car back to Memphis and turn it over to Elvis’s estate, retracing the exact route her mother took thirty-seven years earlier. As she winds her way through the sprawling deep south, the burning question in Cory’s mind—is Elvis Presley my father?—takes a backseat to the truth she learns about her complicated mother. Kim and I delve into the inspiration behind ‘Last Ride to Graceland’ and the fascinating journey of research and discovery that brought the book to life. In the final segment of the episode, Stephanie Myers of Songfacts Podcast and Stephanie & Stephanie Talk Tunes joins Rock is Lit Season 3 Production Intern Cador Jones and me for a chat about some of the real-life folks who have claimed to be Elvis’s “lovechildren.” Catch Stephanie Myers talking about actual kidnapping plots against Elvis in Season 1 Episode 3 of Rock is Lit. Love That Album Episode 175 - Grace Jones "Nightclubbing"

5/8/2024
In the history of pop music, how often has a performer had the chance to try something radically different from what they were known for? Sure, there are some artists who evolved over the course of their career, so where they ended up was radically different from where they started. I suspect, however, the list of performers who were known and appreciated for a style who then made a big change is a lot smaller. Ladies and gentlemen, we’re here to present the case of Grace Jones. Welcome to episode 175 of Love That Album. Grace Jones is that rare case of artist who was a model, then went on to have an ongoing career as a respected singer. Her first trilogy of records were rooted in the disco scene where she had a strong following. Then….Studio 54 closed, Disco Demolition happened in Chicago, and disco music finished its moment in the mainstream. Most artists would persist with what they know and fade away or go on nostalgia tours. Grace Jones isn’t most people. With the encouragement and support of Island Records head Chris Blackwell, she was put in a studio with the kings of reggae, and musicians representing the rock and emerging techno scene. She released her 4th album, Warm Leatherette album in 1980….very different from anything she’d done before. In 1981, she released the album many see as the pinnacle of her career, Nightclubbing. It’s a mix of interpretations of others’ songs and a few originals. Make no mistake – everything she sings, she owns, but the support of the Compass Point Allstars really elevates the record. This was the band Grace was meant to perform with. I am joined by Sam Whiles, the host of the excellent “Paul Or Nothing” (a show dedicated to the life and work of Paul McCartney) to discuss Nightclubbing and other aspects of Jones’ work and life. We had a great conversation that I hope you will enjoy. It’s not often….well never….that I’ve had a podcast where J.G Ballard, Donna Summer, Iggy Pop and Vanda and Young are all brought up. Frankly, LTA is all the better for it. My gratitude to Sam for suggesting this album as the focus for the episode. Only Three Lads: John Easdale from Dramarama - Top 5 Artists Who Belong in the Rock Hall

5/7/2024
You know we'd give you anything, anything...including this special episode with the one and only John Easdale from Dramarama! The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2024 inductees were recently announced, including Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, and A Tribe Called Quest. Yet, year after year, so many deserving and influential artists are overlooked for this honor, which is our focus this week. John Easdale is the singer/songwriter in the iconic Wayne, NJ band Dramarama. They found widespread acclaim with the alternative radio classic "Anything, Anything" from 1985's Cinéma Vérité, and the succession of modern rock staples that followed - "It's Still Warm" (from Box Office Bomb, 1987), "Last Cigarette" (from Stuck in Wonderamaland, 1989), "Haven't Got A Clue" and "What Are We Going To Do?" (from Vinyl, 1991), and "Work For Food" (from Hi-Fi Sci-Fi, 1993), right up to their latest excellent album, 2020's Color TV. Join us as John recounts the early days of the band, the shock of getting played on KROQ, cover versions, playing with legends, K-Pop, and much more. Plus, we play the latest in our ongoing series of world famous O3L games, Rhymatima! Most importantly, John is one of the kindest, humblest rock stars we've ever met...a true gentleman and a family man. Thanks to our friend Paul Richison for yet another amazing introduction! Play That Rock n' Roll: Interview w/ MIKE DETERMAN & TOM ROSY (Directors of "BEHIND THE BUCKET")

5/7/2024
May the 4th be with you! This is Play That Rock n' Roll's interview with Mike Determan and Tom Rosy, the co-directors of the new documentary, "BEHIND THE BUCKET". "Behind the Bucket" is a documentary about the Midwest Garrison of the 501st Legion, which is a community of dedicated Star Wars fans who design and build film-accurate costumes that they wear to conventions and other fan events. They also lend their support by appearing in these costumes at fundraisers and charity events. In this conversation, we celebrate Star Wars Day by talking about our own fandoms -- when we first saw the films, how we engaged with them as kids, and what about them still impresses us today. Then we discuss their documentary -- how Tom got involved with the 501st, what made them decide to make this film, and how they went about doing it. Plus they will share some news about its release to streaming and DVD!
