Kidnapping, Torture And the Brutality of Maduro’s Regime

1/7/2026
Venezuela’s ousted leader, Nicolás Maduro, is now behind bars in a Brooklyn prison, facing charges that include narco-terrorism and weapons offenses. While support for the U.S. operation that led to Maduro’s capture appears to fall largely along party lines, there is broad agreement that the imprisoned dictator’s regime was brutal. United States Marine veteran Matthew Heath spent two years as one of Maduro’s political prisoners and experienced that cruelty firsthand. Heath recounts how he was kidnapped by the Venezuelan government, the torture he endured, and what he hopes lies ahead for the country following Maduro’s capture. The CDC is recommending a new, scaled-back childhood vaccine schedule, no longer broadly advising vaccines for protection against rotavirus, hepatitis A and B, certain forms of meningitis, or RSV. The Trump administration says the change will not prevent families who want the vaccines from accessing them, and that insurance coverage will remain in place. Critics, however, warn the move could create confusion for parents and potentially lead to an increase in preventable diseases. Former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield joins the Rundown to explain why he believes it’s important to take a fresh look at vaccines—while still emphasizing the need to educate the public about their benefits. What It Takes To Convict A Dictator

1/6/2026
On Monday, Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro pleaded "not guilty" to charges brought against him by the Trump administration following his capture over the weekend in a U.S. operation. Maduro was arraigned on narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, and weapons charges. Following his arrest, some world leaders and Democrats in Congress have questioned the legality of removing Maduro from power. Former state and federal prosecutor Jim Trusty joins the Rundown to discuss the strength of the case against Maduro and whether other witnesses will cooperate. The arrest of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro has sparked international backlash, emergency meetings at the United Nations, and condemnation from some U.S. allies. Supporters of President Trump’s decision to greenlight Operation Absolute Resolve argue the move delivers a major blow not only to the country’s drug networks, but also to American adversaries like Iran, Hezbollah, and China, which have expanded their presence in Venezuela and the region. Ian Bremmer, president and founder of the Eurasia Group, joins the Rundown to assess the challenges ahead—including the possibility of the U.S. using military force to secure offshore oil infrastructure and cut off Venezuela’s exports—and how the Trump administration is reshaping American power and influence across the Western Hemisphere. What the Arrest of Venezuela’s Maduro Means for the Region, U.S. Security

1/5/2026
The Trump administration is defending a dramatic U.S. operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and brought them to the United States to face criminal charges tied to narcotics trafficking and corruption. Officials say the mission was carried out as a law-enforcement action with military support, while critics raise questions about congressional notification and the long-term impact on Venezuela’s governance and regional stability.
