GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Ep 8: Guerry Smith w/ NOLA.com
10/19/2022
Welcome to Behind Enemy Lines Episode 8. In this episode we are joined by Guerry Smith, Tulane beat writer for NOLA.com and the publisher of "The Wave Report." Guerry is a lifelong New Orleans resident and has covered the Tulane Green Wave since 2011. Guerry has covered the Tulane Green Wave football team during some pretty up and down years, so we spent quite a bit of time talking about the resurgence that Tulane is experiencing this year. They come into the game against the Tigers with a record of 6-1, 3-0 in the AAC. They picked up enough votes in the AP poll to be ranked #25 for the first time in over twenty years. Tulane's resurgence can be attributed to the play of quarterback Michael Pratt and running back Tyjae Spears. Tulane also went heavy in the transfer portal this year bringing in ten players that are contributing to the team this year. Maryland transfer wide receiver Dea Dea McDougle has joined Michael Pratt, his high school teammate, and has added another threat to the offense. He has 16 receptions for 187 yards and 1 touchdown. They also boast a highly aggressive defense led by linebackers Dorian Wiliams and Nick Anderson. Memphis and Tulane have played 37 games against each other in their history, and Memphis owns a lead of 24 wins to 13 losses. Memphis comes into this game with a record of 4-3, 2-2 in the AAC. Guerry believes the biggest matchup in the game will be if Memphis' wide receivers can stretch the field on the Tulane secondary. He believes that this Tulane team is the best tackling team he has ever seen, and does not believe Memphis will be able to run the ball well against Tulane. Tulane has only given up 30 explosive plays this year, but in their previous week's game against USF, quarterback Jerry Bohanon was lighting up the Tulane secondary. Tulane pulled away in the second half due to an injury to Bohanon. He believes Memphis has the quality quarter in Seth Henigan and tall, physical receivers that could give Tulane a tough matchup. He expects that if Tulane comes in focused and not overwhelmed by the national attention they have been receiving, the Tigers will have a tough time beating Tulane on the road in New Orleans. Ti20 Off the Boards: 2023 G Ryan Forrest
10/14/2022
Penny Hardaway secured his first commitment for the 2023 Class in 3-star guard Ryan Forrest. Ryan is a senior at the newly established Link Academy based out of Branson, Missouri. Ryan originally played for Marion High School in Marion, Arkansas, but made the move to the elite academy during the summer of 2022. Ryan is a 6'3 shooting guard that plays a physical, aggressive and bouncy game. Ryan shares with GT247 about his decision to move to Link Academy and how playing with a roster of extremely talented players has already helped him develop his work ethic and game to a different level. Ryan grew up in the Memphis area and has been a fan of the Memphis Tigers for years. He describes the day he received an offer from Penny after an unofficial visit and how excited he was to potentially wear the Tiger uniform in college. He tells GT247 that he didn't allow himself to gloat in receiving the offer, but he was reinvigorated to continue to work hard and get himself ready to play college ball. Ryan describes himself as a tough, athletic guard who loves to attack the paint and defend hard. His mentality towards defense is that he takes pride in shutting other players down and frustrating them. He sees the Memphis style of play as a style that fits his game totally. The speed and space the Tigers employ on the offense end, plus the aggressive team defense is what sold him on accepting the offer to play for Penny Hardaway and the Tigers. GoTigers247's Tigers on Tap Ep 13: Houston Review/ECU Preview
10/13/2022
Welcome to Tigers on Tap Episode 13. In this episode TJ and Trey review a horrifying loss to Houston on Friday, October 7th. Memphis was double digits heading into the final five minutes of the game, and Trey and TJ detail ALL the things that had to go perfect for Houston to come back. If the Tigers had made one of those plays go in their favor they could have sealed the game in their favor. Both of the guys were incredibly frustrated by the lack of finishing the Tigers showed against Houston. There were multiple drives that ended with field goals inside the 10-yard line instead of touchdowns, but they both believe the offense showed a different level of creativity in the game. Gabe Rodgers has proven himself to be a successful big playmaker for the Tigers' offense. Both guys are extremely frustrated with the special teams play. Even though Chris Howard kicked multiple field goals for the Tigers, once again the Tigers' kickoff coverage team let them down. Giving up the kickoff return touchdown to Houston in the fourth quarter provided Houston with the confidence it needed to continue to fight. The Tigers rank very low in all of FBS football. In the second segment, TJ and Trey break down the ECU game. They both believe Memphis and ECU are evenly matched and both teams are coming off heartbreaking losses. ECU comes in the game at 3-3 on the season after dropping an AAC matchup against Tulane 24-9. ECU has a dynamic offense led by QB Holton Ahlers and running back Keaton Williams. The line opened up at -4.5 in ECU's favor. TJ is hopeful that the resurgent Tiger defense can hold the ECU offense at bay. The Tigers' defense has gameplanned well over the past few weeks, and have held their opponent's running games to below 100 yards in those games. TJ and Trey believe that the Tigers' offense can take advantage of an ECU secondary that has given up multiple big plays each game. TJ expects the Tigers to win 24-17. Trey expects the Tigers to win 28-24. About Tigers on Tap Tigers on Tap is a podcast for fans by fans. GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Ep 7: Stephen Igoe w/ Hoist the Colours
10/12/2022
Welcome to episode 7 of GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines. In this episode, GT247 is joined by Stephen Igoe, the owner/writer for Hoist the Colours, the ECU 247Sports affiliate. Stephen discusses East Carolina's season so far. East Carolina comes into the game with a record of 3-3. In Week 6, ECU lost to Tulane in New Orleans in their AAC matchup 24-9. Stephen discusses the vibe around the program right now. He describes the players as "pissed off" because of their poor performance in the Tulane game. The ECU team is led by a bunch of veterans, notably QB Holton Ahlers, who came into this year believing that they would contend for a conference championship. Stephen believes the the ups and downs on the season can be contributed to the up and down nature of the ECU offense. East Carolina is loaded with talented players. We mentioned Ahlers before, but ECU also has a talented running back, Keaton Mitchell, a big rangy receiver in Isaiah Winstead, and a do everything TE in Oklahoma transfer Ryan Jones. Even with such a talented roster, the offense lives and dies by the play of Holton Ahlers. Stephen believes that if Ahlers can limit ill-timed interceptions and make very few mistakes, ECU can beat any team in the AAC. Stephen believes this game is a must win for both teams. With Memphis coming off a gut-wrenching loss against Houston and ECU losing to Tulane, both teams need to show the ability to bounce back from devastating losses. He believes this game has the ability to set the winner up for success the rest of the season, but will also leave the loser with uncertainty about where to go from the rest of the way. Ti20 Off the Boards: Defensive end Jaylon Allen
10/11/2022
Welcome to the latest episode of Ti20's Off the Boards. In a break from the normal Game Balls episode, GT247 is joined by 5th year senior, defensive end Jaylon Allen. Jaylon has been on the Tiger team since 2018, and has seen it all. Coming out of a rough weekend for the Tigers, as they dropped a heartbreaker of a game to the Houston Cougars, Jaylon expounds on his profound post-game press conference statements. How did the the Tigers lose such a big lead to the Cougars? How did the team respond immediately after the game? Jaylon shares his answers to all these questions, and gives insight into how the team needs to learn lessons from this loss and take it forward to the next games on the schedule. Jaylon shares what he thinks needs to be changed following Friday night's loss. He also talks about the goals the Tigers have and his feelings on whether or not those goals are still attainable. GoTigers247's Tigers on Tap Ep 12: Temple Review/Houston Preview
10/6/2022
Welcome to Tigers on Tap Episode 12. In this episode, Trey and TJ review the Tigers' gritty 24-3 win over Temple in Week 5 and preview the upcoming matchup against pre-season AAC favorite, Houston Cougars. Houston was ranked in the Top 25 coming into the year, but comes into the game against the Tigers with a 2-3 record. The Tigers are favored to win the game on Friday night at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. In the first segment, TJ and Trey review the Temple game. For the second straight game, the Tigers' offense struggled to maintain any sustained momentum. For the first time in a long time, the Tigers went into halftime with zero points on the board. The Tigers' defense played inspired and kept Temple out of the endzone the entire game. They also forced three more turnovers continuing the trend of forcing opponents' turnovers and protecting the ball themselves. The Tigers are second in the nation in turnover margin at +9 on the season. TJ and Trey talk about the issues the offense is having. What are the trends they see that concern them? How can the Tigers fix the offensive woes? In the second segment, TJ and Trey preview the upcoming Week 6 game against the Houston Cougars. Houston and Memphis have faced off numerous times in the AAC, and all that will come to an end this year as Houston exits the AAC and moves to the Big 12. The Tigers come into this game on a four game winning streak, but the next three games will be the toughest stretch during their 2022 season. Houston has underwhelmed this year so far after being picked to win the AAC conference this year. They come in at 2-3 on the year, 0-1 in the AAC. TJ and Trey discuss the matchups they are most interested in seeing during this game. Houston lost their most talented defensive lineman at the beginning of the year, but still boast a fast and aggressive defensive front seven. The Tigers have struggled on the offensive line to protect Seth Henigan and open up holes for the run game. Trey and TJ discuss the Tigers' evolving offensive strategy and what types of wide receiver routes would be effective to stifle the Houston defense. Trey and TJ are both concerned with how the Tigers' secondary will be able to stop Nathaniel "Tank" Dell Jr, the prolific Houston wide receiver. Clayton Tune, the starting quarterback for Houston, has also proven himself to be a capable runner this year, and TJ and Trey discuss how the Tigers' defense needs to shore up their strategy against a quarterback who can be a dual threat. TJ predicts the Tigers will win 27-24 in a close, tough game against a talented, but fractured, Houston team. Trey predicts that the Tigers will win 30-28. GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Ep 6: Rob Sellers with CougarsDigest.com
10/5/2022
Welcome to Behind Enemy Lines Episode 6. GoTigers247 is joined by Rob Sellers from CougarsDigest.com as the Tigers face off against Houston Cougars at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium on Friday, October 7th. Houston was ranked in the Top 25 during the preseason and was picked to win the AAC Championship this year, but things have not gone well for them so far. The Cougars sit at 2-3 on the season, and 0-1 in the AAC after a frustrating OT loss to Tulane in Week 5. There has been plenty of frustration for everyone involved in the program, but head coach Dana Holgorsen has received a majority of the blowback. Houston brings back quarterback Clayton Tune and wide receiver Nathaniel Dell Jr to an offense that has normally been extremely potent. The Cougars lost star running back Alton McCaskill in the preseason to a knee injury, and Tune has struggled to find open receivers down the field. Houston fans have described the offense as "bland" and are frustrated with the offensive line play as the Cougars have had to replace multiple offensive linemen over the past few years. Rob speaks about the unfortunate penalty issues that the Cougars have experienced during their five games. He says most of the penalties come from a lack of awareness or just plain bad luck. He believes that if the Cougars can limit their penalty issues against the Tigers, they will have a better chance of winning the game. The defense boasts a strong and aggressive front seven, but opponents' offenses have targeted that aggressiveness with short dump off passes. He believes the matchup between the Tigers' offensive line and the Cougars' defensive line will be the matchup that will determine the outcome of the game. If the Tigers can exert their will at the line of scrimmage, he believes Seth Henigan can pick apart a secondary that has routinely had issues covering receivers down the field. Obviously, the offensive line has been a point of concern for the Tigers, alongside the route running ability of receivers. Can the Tigers' receivers gain separation from Houston in the secondary and exploit their deficiencies? Rob believes the Tigers should absolutely be expected to win the game. He shares that he believes the Cougars are talented enough to "wake up" at some point during this season, but the concern for him is that the Cougars are not as talented as believed in the preseason. Ti20's Game Balls Ep 5: Seth Henigan & Greg Rubin
10/4/2022
Welcome to Ti20's Game Balls Episode 5. GoTigers247 is joined by quarterback Seth Henigan and cornerback Greg Rubin as they receive the game balls for their performance in the 24-3 win over Temple in Week 5 of the 2022 college football season. Seth Henigan went 24/45, 195 yards and 1 touchdown. He also carried the ball 19 times for 60 yards. Seth breaks down his performance in the Temple game, and shares how frustrated he was to look up at halftime and see zero points on the board for the Tigers. He talks about how he has never really experienced that before, and how he kept the offense even keeled during a halftime where frustration could have gotten the better of them. He's a firm believer in everyone owning their individual mistakes, and he believes the Tigers are really good at that. He encouraged everyone to forget previous plays and to look forward to the next. Kenny and Seth talk through the idea of being a leader when everything is going well compared to when the game was a grind and struggle. He is encouraged that the Tigers are finishing games and winning. He understands that most fans love a frontrunning offense that is running up the scores on opponents, but he cares more about winning than he does about putting up ridiculous stats. Seth believes the Tigers have great chemistry and camaraderie and are able to stick together even when the offense isn't performing to their standards. Seth is not satisfied with the offense's performance and believes they are continuing to work on getting better each game. Native Memphian, Greg Rubin, joins GoTigers247 in the second segment. Greg is a former White Station High School football star and is in his second year playing for his hometown team. Greg ended the Temple game with 8 tackles, 5 solo, and was a menace the entire game in the backfield and as the nickelback covering the middle of the field. Greg shares how much he loves wearing the Memphis name on his chest every week. He has always wanted to represent his city because he knows how hard it is for kids that grew up like him to make it out. He shared how he wants to be an inspiration for those young kids to understand that if they work hard and do right, they can make it out like him. Greg is pleased with the direction of the defense in the last few games. He thinks the defense is starting to find a groove in the new Matt Barnes scheme, and shares how hard they are working to keep it going. He is pleased with the takeaways that the Memphis' defense has produced this year. He takes pride in being a part of the plays where others are getting interceptions, but can't wait until he gets his own. GoTigers247's Tigers on Tap Ep 11: UNT Review/Temple Preview
9/29/2022
Welcome to Tigers on Tap Episode 11. In this episode TJ and Trey review the Tigers' 44-34 win over the University of North Texas, and preview the upcoming conference matchup against the Temple Owls on Saturday, October 1st. In the first segment, TJ and Trey break down the Tigers' win over UNT. Both guys were disappointed in the play of the offense. UNT came into the game giving up an average of close to 500 yards a game, but were outgained by UNT 473-334. QB Seth Henigan struggled during the game to find open receivers and was sacked three times during the game. The defense, overall, had a better game than the offense. Even though they gave up 473 yards of total offense to UNT, 5th year seniors Zay Cullens and Jaylon Allen scored touchdowns for the defense with two interceptions returned for a touchdown. Trey and TJ both believe the secondary for the Tigers will keep getting picked apart unless the defensive line creates more pressure. They both reiterate, though, that wins are the most important thing, no matter the final score. In the end, even after a disappointing game, the Tigers go into their matchup against Temple with a 3-1 record. In the second segment, TJ and Trey preview the upcoming matchup against Temple. One notable starter for the Owls this year is true freshman EJ Warner who has assumed the starting quarterback role taking over for D'Wan Mathis. TJ does not believe Temple has the roster to hang with the Tigers in this game, but they are concerned by the play of the defense as of late. EJ Warner is a good enough quarterback to take advantage of bad cornerback play and a lack of pressure by the defensive line. Both guys believe Memphis will win the game, but there are so many questions left up in the air about the Tigers' team, guessing a final score is a hard task. TJ believes the Tigers will win 38-17. Trey predicts the Tigers to win 49-21. About Tigers on Tap Tigers on Tap is a podcast for fans by fans. GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Ep 5; Ryan Wallen w/ OwlsDaily.com
9/28/2022
Welcome to GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Episode 5. In this episode we are joined by Ryan Wallen of OwlsDaily.com, the 247Sports affiliate for Temple University. In the first segment, Kenny and Ryan discuss the history behind the Temple/Memphis matchup. Both teams have played each other 7 times and Temple currently leads the series 4-3. Ryan discusses how the game between the Tigers and Owls is always a dogfight, and no matter each team's win/loss record, both team's fan base can expect a hard fought game. Ryan talks about the coaching change that Temple has experienced this year with the hiring of Stan Drayton as the head coach. He describes Drayton as a coach that wants to reignite the ground and pound mentality in the Temple Owls. He believes that over the past few years, the Temple football team has had moments where they have given up at the end of a game, and how that is so against the culture of Philadelphia and Temple University. The Temple team comes into this matchup with a 2-2 record, but Ryan believes that if a few things had gone the Owls way, they could easily be at 3-1 on the season. Ryan discusses the emergence of EJ Warner as the starting quarterback for Temple. He has replaced former Temple quarterback, D'Wan Mathis, and has shown flashes of the strong pedigree he comes from as the son of former NFL MVP Kurt Warner. EJ has taken major steps to show he is ready to play even as a true freshman, but has moments where fans see his youth show itself. In the second segment, Kenny and Ryan discuss certain matchups they are looking out for in this game. Ryan is concerned with how Temple's secondary is going to adjust to playing a quarterback with the accuracy that Seth Henigan has. Temple has not faced a quarterback of Seth's caliber all year, and the Temple secondary has consistently been burned by lesser quarterbacks. Temple's strongest unit on their team is their defensive line and linebacker corp. They are third in the country in sacks (15) and boast a defensive line that aspires to have multiple players playing on Sunday in a few years. The Tigers' offensive line has struggled to protect Seth Henigan and open up holes for the running game, and with two starting lineman "day to day" with injuries, the Tigers will have to play above their heads to keep Temple's defense out of the backfield. Ryan believes that the Tigers have the offensive firepower to run away from Temple in this game, but he would also not be surprised if Temple kept the game close. Ti20 Game Balls Episode 4: Joe Doyle, Jaylon Allen & Zay Cullens
9/27/2022
Welcome to Ti20 Game Balls Episode 4! In this episode, GoTigers247 hands out game balls from the 44-34 win over North Texas to punter Joe Doyle, defensive end Jaylon Allen and linebacker Xavier Cullens. In the first segment, punter Joe Doyle receives the first game ball. Joe punted 8 times for 400 yards and 3 punts downed within the opponents' 10-yard line. Joe talks with GT247 about his 2021 season with the Tigers that found him having to assume field goal kicking duties as well as the punter role. He also shares his approach during a game when he knows that he will play a big role in helping flip the field for the defense. Most football fans do not want to see a punter play a big role in a game, so how does Joe handle the pressure of having to come into the game after a disappointing offense possession? Joe explains the mechanics of punting a ball down to the opponents' goal line and what preparation goes into knowing yardage and wind. In the second segment, defensive end Jaylon Allen receives the second game ball. This is Jaylon's 2nd game ball received from GoTigers247 this year. Jaylon ended the game with 2 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack, and 1 interception returned for a touchdown. Jaylon talks about what he saw in the pass play that he intercepted, and how he knew he would score once he caught the ball. He also shares his thoughts on where the defense is at this point in the year. He wants to see the Tigers' defense finish games the way they started. He believes the defense gets a bit lax at the end of games, and allows teams to score silly points at the end of the game. In the third segment, linebacker Xavier Cullens receives the third game ball. Xavier ended the game with 8 tackles, 4 solo, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 interception returned for a touchdown. Xavier talks about when he knew the Tigers' defense would be successful against UNT on Saturday. He also shares that the Tigers need to continue to communicate well on the field and how if they shore up their tackling game, he knows they can have a very successful year on the defensive end. GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Ep 4: MeanGreen247's Reed Smith
9/22/2022
In episode 4 of Behind Enemy Lines, GoTigers247 is joined by Reed Smith, the site manager and beat writer for MeanGreen247.com, the 247Sports affiliate for the University of North Texas. North Texas enters the game against the Tigers with a record of 2-2, while the Tigers come in at 2-1. Reed shares that the mood and vibe around UNT is not good right now. Coming off of a miserable second half against UNLV, fans of the Mean Green are upset with the play of the team and more specifically the play calling. One of the main storylines coming into the year for UNT was the quarterback competition coming in to spring camp. Obviously the UNT quarterback competition and Memphis quarterback competition has one tie that runs through both of them: Grant Gunnell. After leaving Memphis in the spring, Grant transferred to UNT and immediately became the main challenger for the quarterback position against Austin Aune. Austin has been the starting quarterback at UNT for two years, but most fans were extremely upset that Austin was named the starter. Austin has performed well this year so far, so he looks to be the starter moving forward the whole year. Austin's story is unique in college football. He spent six years in the Yankee farm system, and is now a 29-year old, junior for the UNT Mean Green. Reed goes into detail about how UNT has been a tale of two halves. Their record is 2-2, with all four games ending differently each time. But not only do the Mean Green struggle to find consistency from game to game, Reed mentions that they struggle finding consistency from half to half. The UNLV game was a perfect example. The game was close in the first half, but something happened at halftime where the play calling became bland and the defense struggled from the start. Reed mentions that a big stat line he is looking to is whether or not UNT can convert on third and long plays on offense. Obviously this has been a major storyline for the Tiger defense this year as well. UNT has struggled to convert third downs and the Tigers have struggled to get off the field. This statistical point will be huge for both teams on Saturday. Reed believes that the game will either be an offensive shootout or Memphis will run away with the game. He expects Seth Henigan to have a huge game due to the fact that UNT has struggled to stop any quarterback they have played against. GoTigers247's Tigers on Tap Ep 9: Navy Review & Arkansas State Preview
9/16/2022
Welcome to Tigers on Tap Episode 9! TJ and Trey are here to review the Tigers' dominant win over Navy in Week 2 and preview the home opener against Arkansas State this weekend. In the first segment, TJ and Trey go through the "Good, Bad, and Beautiful" from the 37-13 win over Navy in Week 2. The good for both guys were the Tiger receivers. They thought the receivers made a huge comeback from a tough week one loss to Mississippi State. Gabe Rogers and Javon Ivory caught 12 balls for 184 yards combined. The main statistic that impressed TJ and Trey was the lack of dropped balls from the receivers. They also highlighted the defense, in particular, their takeaways. Last year the Tigers were -4 overall in takeaways, but in two games this year, the Tigers have 5 takeaways and only 1 turnover. The bad for both guys is third down conversions on defense. The Tigers are allowing opponents to gain first down yardage on third downs 60% of the time, which puts them second to last in the AAC. Trey does not like the distance in which Tiger opponents are getting for their first down. He sees that opponents getting 8+ yards on third downs could possibly be a scheme issue, but they are hoping to see the Tigers change that in Week 3 against Arkansas State. Another issue that TJ brings up is the blocking from the tight ends. The two main tight ends, Caden Prieskorn and Anthony Landphere, have shown that blocking is not one of their strong suits. The beautiful from the Navy game is Seth Henigan. Both guys are incredibly impressed with Seth's ability to throw the ball, but also to lead the team. Seth went 24-34 for 415 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Navy game. In the second segment, the guys move to previewing the Arkansas State game. Both guys are surprised by the line being -14.5 going the Tigers way. TJ believes that the line is high, but believe the Tigers will win. TJ and Trey break down the most consequential matchups in the game. They highlight the Tigers' defensive line versus Arkansas State's offensive line. This will be the first game that the Tigers are not playing against an offense that is specialized in either running or passing. Arkansas State follows most trends in football where they try to have a balanced run and passing attack. They believe this game will be a clear example of where the Tigers stand under Matt Barnes and his new schemes. Champ Fleming is a new Arkansas State wide receiver who has proven to be a consistent threat during the first two weeks. If the Tigers can contain him, both guys believe the Tigers will have an easy opportunity to slow down Arkansas State. To end the show, Trey and TJ make predictions on the game. TJ has the Gabe Rogers scoring the first touchdown for the Tigers, Eddie Lewis and Tyler Murray will win game balls, and the Tigers will win 38-28. Trey's predictions are Javon Ivory will score the first touchdown, Javon Ivory and Geoff Cantin-Arku will win game balls, and the Tigers win 41-22. GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Episode 3: AStateNation247's Jeff Reed
9/15/2022
Welcome to GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Episode 3. In this episode we are joined by Jeff Reed of AStateNation247, the 247Sports affiliate for the Arkansas State Red Wolves. In segment one, Jeff and Kenny go in depth on the history between Arkansas State and Memphis. Especially last year's barn burner of a game where Memphis held on 55-50 in Jonesboro where fans saw both teams' offenses move the ball effortlessly up and down the field. Both guys believe the close proximity of the schools make the matchups between Memphis and Arkansas State fun for both teams. Memphis has the third most amount of Arkansas State alumni living in the city, so the game should be a fun environment for both fan bases. Jeff shares how Arkansas State started off the year with a resounding win over Grambling in week one and then traveled to Ohio State in a matchup against one of the more dominant teams in college football history. Jeff explains that the final score did not show how competitive Arkansas State was against Ohio State. Jeff shares about how Arkansas State football is turning around. There is only about 18-19 guys from the Blake Anderson era left on the team, and he explains how there was quite a bit of dysfunction on the Red Wolves team last year. He believes that Coach Butch Jones has recruited over and replaced a lot of those guys and how the team seems to be in a much better place this year. In segment two, Jeff talks about the emergence of James Blackmon as the starting quarterback for Arkansas State. Last year, Layne Hatcher and James Blackmon both saw action as the starter, but coming into this year, James Blackmon was the clear starter. Jeff believes James has shown himself to be a much more mature decision maker and leader for the Red Wolves team. James' consistency on the field has helped bridge the gap for the large amount of new talent that Coach Butch Jones brought into the fold through the transfer portal last year. Coach Jones also recruited the highest rated incoming freshman class in the Sun Belt this past year, and some of those true freshman are already showing an ability to contribute this year. Jeff believes that this game is important to both teams because it will provide a clear sign of momentum for the rest of the year. He believes Memphis will be the first true test of how Arkansas State, as a program, is developing. He believes this will be a high scoring game with both potent offenses seeing a lot of success on the field. Ti20 Game Balls Episode 2: Quindell Johnson and Seth Henigan
9/13/2022
Welcome to Episode 2 of Ti20 Game Balls, a GoTigers247 audio podcast where GT247 hands out game balls to athletes that performed well on the field in the previous week's game. Memphis, coming of a season opening loss to Mississippi State, traveled to Annapolis, Maryland to play Navy in their AAC conference opener. Memphis played a substantially better game on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Seth Henigan led the Tigers with 415 yards and 1 touchdown on 24-34 passing. Quindell Johnson was a stud on defense, finishing the game with 13 tackles, 11 of them solo, with 1 gigantic interception. Seth Henigan and Quindell Johnson are the recipients of Week 2 GoTigers247's game balls. In the first segment, defensive back Quindell Johnson joins GoTigers247 to accept his game ball. He shares his thoughts on the week that the city of Memphis has been through, and how he felt a burden and responsibility to help Memphis have a bright spot over the weekend with the Tigers' football game. Memphis has become a second home to Quindell and he loves the fan support that he feels from the home fans every Saturday. Quindell shares his experience of going to Annapolis and playing the Naval Academy. He appreciates the cadets that play football and go to school there because of the added responsibility they have of training to protect our country overseas. Quindell loves playing against Navy because he knows that they deserve respect because of how tough the team plays every game. Quindell talks about the interception he had in the first half. Quindell had seen this play on film during the weeks prior and he knew that when the running back got the ball, he wasn't planning on running the ball. He broke hard to the receiver running down the field, and made an incredible play intercepting the ball in the endzone. Quindell discusses how he uses his instincts to make plays like this. Former DC Coach McIntyre used to say "knowledge equals confidence equals playing fast." He plays with a confidence that allows him to trust his instincts and play quickly. He wants the defense to fight against complacency and continue to strive to be their best as they start off a four game home stretch. In the second segment, QB1 Seth Henigan joined GoTigers247. Seth shares how he felt the Tigers' offense really gelled well during the Navy game and was successful with their game plan. After a frustrating loss against Mississippi State, he was proud of how the receivers made substantial improvements from week one to week 2. Seth graded his game as pretty decent. He bemoaned the fact that he missed several throws and reads to receivers, but expressed excitement that they were able to meet their stated goal of 8 "X Plays", which are plays that go 20+ yards. Seth stated that he never lost faith in his receiving corp after the first game against Mississippi State. He knows the work the receivers put in during practice and believes that the growth from Game 1 will continue to increase from week to week. GoTigers247's Tigers on Tap Ep 8: Mississippi State Review/ Navy Preview
9/9/2022
Welcome to Episode 8 of Tigers on Tap. In this episode, TJ and Trey break down the Week One loss to Mississippi State and preview the Week Two matchup against AAC conference foe, Navy. The Tigers and Midshipmen have played each other 7 times since 2015, and the Tigers hold a slim 4-3 advantage. This game has been mostly dominated by the home team, so the Tigers are looking to go on the road and buck the trend of the Memphis/Navy matchup. In segment one, TJ and Trey break down the frustrating 49-23 loss to Mississippi State. TJ and Trey start off the segment with formal apologies. TJ apologizes to Jeyvon Ducker for the false claims about Jeyvon's speed. Clearly, after Jeyvon's 50-yard TD run against State, that proclamation by TJ was proven false. Trey formally apologized for the weather delay. In a selfish move by Trey, he asked for the weather delay so they could watch the game without kid interference while on vacation. The 2.5 hour weather delay was clearly Trey's fault, and he definitely needed to apologize. TJ and Trey break down the good, bad and ugly of the State game. The ugly parts of the game for the guys was the offense. The first half felt completely flat and was quite frustrating for Tiger fans. To sum up the ineptitude in the first half, the Tigers had 29 total yards to end the half while State put 28 points on the board. The bad part of the game was the tackling on defense and the dropped passes by receivers. The Tigers' receivers dropped at least 6 balls and completely killed any momentum the Tigers' offense might have created. The missed tackles were unlike anything Tiger fans have seen in a long time. State ended the game with over 230 yards after catch. The good parts for the Tigers was the special teams and the grit that the Tigers showed in the second half. Memphis matched State point for point in the second half against all 2-deep defenders for State. In segment two, TJ and Trey preview the matchup against the Naval Academy. This game could not be more important for both teams. Navy started their season with a loss to FBS opponent Delaware. TJ believes that the Tigers are going to come out quickly and try to score as many points as possible quickly to put the game away. Both guys are interested in seeing the adjustments made by Matt Barnes with the defensive line. Senior DE Jaylon Allen had a fantastic game against Mississippi State, but they believe the Tigers will unveil a beefier defensive line with Zy Brockington, Wardalis Ducksworth, Cam Jackson, and Cormontae Hamilton to stop the triple option read offense that Navy is so famous for. The matchup to look out for this game will be the Tigers' receivers against the Navy secondary. Against Delaware, Navy's secondary did not look good, so the guys think the more talented, bigger receivers that Memphis has should be very successful. Trey and TJ end the episode with score predictions. TJ thinks Memphis will win 35-21, Memphis, and Trey believes Memphis will win 38-13. GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Episode 2: Navy Radio Network's Joe Miller
9/8/2022
Welcome to Behind Enemy Lines Episode 2. GoTigers247 is joined by Joe Miller, the color commentator for Navy Football with the Navy Radio Network. In the first segment of the show, Joe shares with Behind Enemy Lines' listeners how much the 2022 season feels like things have gotten back to normal after a few years of dealing with the Covid pandemic. Joe enlightens us on how Navy has had pretty unbelievable restrictions on them due to the fact that they are connected to the US government. He explained how the players were sequestered to the Naval Institute grounds and how the players had access restricted to the facilities. Joe and Kenny go in depth into the Navy/Memphis matchup. Navy joined the AAC in 2015 after experiencing 134 years of independence as a football team. Navy and Memphis have played 7 times over the past 7 years and the current record is 4-3, Memphis. Joe describes the vibe around Annapolis during football season, and the pageantry involved with the program. He describes the environment around Annapolis with words like family, commitment and duty. In the second segment, Joe goes in depth on the matchup between Navy and Memphis. This matchup has been dominated by the home team. In all but one of the games, the home team has won. Joe shares how Navy fans view the Memphis game. He believes that Memphis is one of the top tier programs in the AAC and is a team that the opposing team has to really game plan for. Joe describes the consistency around the Navy program, especially in regards to their head coach, Ken Niumatalolo. He has been the head coach since 2007 and has become the winningest head coach in the program history. He shares that the consistency around the entirety of the Navy program is because of the kids that come to school there. Joe then describes the vibe around the Navy team. The Navy team was excited coming into this season because of the success they experienced at the end of last year. With returning starting quarterback, Tai Lavatai, heading up the team, the Navy team was stunned by Delaware in week one, so he describes the program as recovering from a really bad game. Joe talks about how the backfield for Navy is all brand new for the team, and how they haven't seen any time on the field together. He attributes their lack of experience to the turnover problems Navy experienced in the game against Delaware. He expressed quite a bit of excitement with the defense Navy has this year. He believes the defense kept them in the game and gave Navy a shot to win the game at the end. Joe believes that time of possession is the most important aspect of the game for success or failure for Navy and their opponents. Navy has made its way with a "3 yards and a cloud of dust" mentality, but he believes the success of the offense is actually in their explosive plays. With defenses keying in on their triple option read offense, Navy has been most successful in games when they can take advantage of a packed in defense and bust off big plays. Joe believes this game versus Memphis is extremely important for both teams. With both teams coming into Week 2 after really frustrating losses, they want to wash the bad taste of Week 1 out of their mouths.
