Are We Putting Our Daughters' Emotional and Physical Health in Danger By Not Teaching Them About Sex?

12/1/2017
We know how irrational it is to pretend that by not talking about something awkward or uncomfortable, it will go away and we won't have to deal with it, so why do we do this when it comes to talking to our kids about sex? What might sex, sexuality, gender expression, pregnancy, abortion, sexual abuse/assault and rape look like if we had more open and honest conversations about these topics with each other and with our children as soon as they learn to talk? What might our world look like if women had the body awareness and agency to defend themselves against unwanted sexual advances? In this conversation with Robin LaCross, I intersect the nuances of culture and communication when talking about sex and its outcomes. Robin LaCross is a holistic health practitioner who specializes in women's reproductive health. She has been teaching natural birth control methods for over 25 years because she is passionate about making sure every young woman grows up knowing and understanding her body and cycle. Robin is on a mission to reduce unintended pregnancies and the spread of STDs in the world by changing the way mothers talk to their children about growing up, sex and staying safe. Robin is the founder of The HPV Education Project to raise awareness about the virus, new advances in HPV testing and holistic methods of promoting cervical health. Armed with a holistic approach coupled with the latest advances in technology, she is empowering individuals to protect themselves against HPV. Robin currently lives in Tucson, Arizona and works with women all over the world helping them to acquire the knowledge, tools and skills needed to create greater reproductive health and well‐being. Mentioned in this episode My friend Stacey Robin's Sex Talk Cheat sheet It's Perfectly Normal It's So Amazing Girls & Sex Kotex Puberty Booklets -- these are the precursors to the ones I had in the 80s, look how far back they went! Can a Career Coach Help You Grow Your Health Coaching Practice?

11/30/2017
This episode is supported by sales of Danielle LaPorte's Fire Starter Sessions. The Fire Starter Sessions is the permission slip you’ve been waiting for — to fully want what you want and go for it, to expand your consciousness and your cash flow, to up the ante on your dreams, to be incredibly generous with your love. Learn more by clicking here. When I launched Grow Yourself, Grow Your Health Coaching Practice, I wanted to create a space for conversations I felt were missing from the larger conversations graduates were having about their coaching experience. So much of the conversation centered around getting clients and making money, which is fine, because that's what you went to school for. But there weren't enough conversations around personal or career development, the other pieces of doing this work that doesn't have anything to do with getting clients and making money but is about setting yourself up for success. So when I went through Aileen Axtmayer of AspireWithAileen.com's website and talked with her on yesterday's episode of Green Smoothies, Chocolate, and Bacon, I realized her work was the missing link. In addition to working as a career coach for over a decade, Aileen is also a graduate of Institute for Integrative Nutrition. This combination, along with her Yoga certification, uniquely positions her as the holistic go-to not just for career growth, but for your whole life. I'm not a business coach and don't want to be mistaken for one, but I do want health coaches to be successful in their businesses on their own terms. And I believe that one way to get there is through continuous personal development and growth. If you're feeling like you don't know which way to go or grow as a health coach, I invite you to check out Aileen's website to see which of her offers is right for you. Please also let us know your takeaways in the comments below. Grow Yourself, Grow Your Health Coaching Practice is taking a break for the winter season and will return in May 2018. But it isn't over! I invite you to catch up on episodes you may have missed, and to stay connected with me on Twitter and Instagram, and over on my Linkedin group. I welcome your feedback and ideas on future topics and how to improve the show, so please feel free to send them my way.

Why Did You Buy That?

11/27/2017
Nothing like the holiday season to get you all in your feelings about money and materialism. My desire to be location independent and my disdain for Suzie Homemaking introduced me to minimalism which eventually helped me to not get caught up in the madness that is Black Friday and Cyber Monday. I may not buy anything, but I still like to look and dream. #BreatheOnPurpose like Darth Vader (Ujjayi Pranayam)

11/21/2017
The information presented here is not intended to replace the advice of a licensed healthcare professional, nor is it intended to prevent, diagnose, or cure illness or disease. Please consult your primary healthcare professional before making any changes or additions to your current routine. Ujjayi (oo-jai) breath is also known as oceanic breathing and the victorious breath. Because of the sound you make, I like to call it the Darth Vader breath. Ujjayi is often used during Hatha practice to help maintain focus through the asana flow, during other forms of physical activity, and to also relieve tension and nervous energy. With this breath, you're only breathing through your nose, while slightly constricting the throat along with a root and chest lock. These locks are called bandhas, For more about bandhas, check out Yoga International's A Beginner's Guide to Bandhas. You may become lightheaded during this breathwork, so it's highly suggested that you spend a few minutes in long deep breathing before you begin the Ujjayi. #BreatheOnPurpose uses the Insight Timer. What If You Just Punched Him In The Face?

11/20/2017
This episode contains explicit language. I'm tired of talking and reading about sexual harassment and assault and why it's so hard for men to understand that it's unacceptable. So I decided from here on out to explain it to them the best way they understand: Punch him in the face. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, while expecting the same result, then it's time women reclaim their mental health and the (em)power(ment) that comes with pushing back and stomping down anyone and anything that would dare to treat us less than what we deserve and expect. What my words and facial expression don't get across my fist will make clear. Will Cook and Travel for Food and Fun with CherylAnn of CheffyKandCA.com

10/9/2017
Growing up, the kitchen (and food) was central to socialization and bringing people together. Cookouts, repasts, block association meetings, block parties, holidays, you name it, there was a spread. And we're not talking pupus, but get yourself a plate and help yourself to summadis food. When people stopped by, they sat in the kitchen to talk story, as opposed to the living room. My hair was washed, pressed, and braided in the kitchen. Today, while I don't consider myself a foodie, I love learning and talking about foodways and food cultures. CherylAnn and her partner Kent are hosting a culinary tour to Bucerias, Mexico this December 3-8, 2017. Learn to create delectable, local, Mexican favorites. Five nights and six days of hospitality, relaxation, site-seeing, cooking classes, and good food and drink. Casa de la Reyna is located in Bucerias, a quaint, fishing village about 20 km north of Puerto Vallarta. Price includes lodging on the ocean with swimming pool, cooking classes, off-site tour, breakfast, additional daily meal and snacks, evening happy hour, and enough free time so you can completely unwind. Unpacking the Pleasure Principle

10/6/2017
Diary of a Too Much Woman is intended for mature audiences. Sigmund Freud coined the term "the pleasure principle" to characterize the human tendency to choose pleasure over pain at all costs. In this episode, Aurianna Joy, Pleasure and Prosperity Coach, touches on the importance of being present in your relationships and your day-to-day, the role discomfort plays in bringing you closer to or away from the experiences that give you pleasure, and how making space for pleasure, including unstructured time, is the most powerful way to honor the Divine Feminine within you. Aurianna combines over 10 years in the world of personal development along with deep personal studies of yoga, meditation, shamanism, and tantra to support her clients in creating more ease and flow in their life and business. Becoming a massage therapist was one on a long list of professional pursuits I have held on to for almost twenty years. In the process of letting go of old stories and excuses about my life, I decided it was time to take it off the back burner and give it a go. Massage is often trivialized and disrespected as an industry. I blame the societal and religious shame about the body. There's so much you have to know about the human body beyond anatomy, and a lot you have to think about in order to provide a high level of service. Massage therapy is a whole body experience, and not just for the person receiving the massage. So why is the industry treating massage therapists like machines? Why are massage therapists willing to overwork their bodies in the name of gaining experience, time management, and profit? As I recover from burnout and structural issues from repetitive stress, I'm vigilant about my self-care as I explore career opportunities in massage therapy. How Do You Get Better at Coaching?

8/17/2017
Grow Yourself, Grow Your Health Coaching Practice is hosted on the Blubrry platform using the Blubrry Wordpress Plugin. This episode is supported by Danielle LaPorte’s The Fire Starter Sessions. The Fire Starter Sessions is the permission slip you’ve been waiting for — to fully want what you want and go for it, to expand your consciousness and your cash flow, to up the ante on your dreams, to be incredibly generous with your love. After you dig into these straight-talking sermons and burning questions about your truest desires — from career to relationships — you’ll be clear that the only permission you need to shine … is your own. My sisterfriend and fellow Integrative Nutrition Health Coach Simone Turner and I have been supporting each other's coaching practices, personal and professional growth since 2012. When I asked her what she thought about the sentiment that coaching programs don't teach people how to coach, here's what she shared: I find programs like that are focused too much on strategies instead of the real deep coaching skills it takes for coaches to help clients have transformations, because when you run outta strategies, what's left? You've paid all this money for a program that taught you strategies, but never really taught coaching and now when you hit a wall, you're stuck with what to do and where to go to help your client. And that creates a sense of failure and lowers one's confidence on their abilities to truly coach their clients thru challenging situations because they are taught to rely on strategies and not the true gift of transformational coaching. So to know what true transformational coaching looks like, you not only have to invest at a level that will yield that, but you have to invest with a coach that lives and embodies what they are teaching you as well and that their initial focus is not all about "strategies". After you graduate, you may feel like you don't know enough or that you'll need to pursue advanced or specialized training before you can feel confident in your coaching. I invite you to hold off on that and figure out how to get the most from your existing training before you make further additional investments. With more than ten years in the health coaching profession, I've observed the evolution of the industry and the changes in marketing and trends around how to get clients and make money coaching. The Gig Economy as a Path to Personal Freedom and Other Myths About Entrepreneurship

8/14/2017
Unemployable! How to Be Successfully Unemployed Your Entire Life!, by David Thomas Roberts I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Sometimes I get so excited reading books about entrepreneurship that I miss the warning signs that a book might be full of shit. So I had to read parts of this book again just to make sure. I wanted to like this book for inviting the reader to question their current employment situation and consider if the way they traded time for money was really paying off for them in the long term, and for highlighting some of the financial burdens we take on (student loans and mortgages) that keep us trapped in jobs with limited growth and opportunities for financial freedom. There are some really good nuggets here, but they’re lost in the author’s own confusion and ego as he attempts to define personal freedom through entrepreneurship. Of course, personal freedom looks different for everyone, and I’ve come to understand it as being able to make money in a way that doesn’t require your constant presence. If you can wake up and make a decision about your day that doesn’t involve doing something to make money and you’ll still get paid, that’s true personal freedom. Roberts defines it as the freedom to do the things he loves without others controlling his time, income, or schedule, and without worrying about money. Throughout the book, Roberts shares his feelings about his stepfather’s choice to stay employed in a position that ultimately did not value his commitment to the company. He didn’t understand why his stepfather would not take the risk of turning down promotions, even when they did not benefit him financially. He didn’t understand why his stepfather was unwilling to step out on his own. Hmmm, maybe because he had a wife and five kids to take care of?! He acknowledges that entrepreneurship is not for everyone but doesn’t extend this compassion to the man that raised and provided for him. There are pros and cons to every type of income-producing model, whether you work for yourself or someone else, and every iteration in between. amzn_assoc_ad_type = "banner"; amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon"; amzn_assoc_region = "US"; amzn_assoc_placement = "assoc_banner_placement_default"; amzn_assoc_campaigns = "kuft"; amzn_assoc_banner_type = "category"; amzn_assoc_isresponsive = "true"; amzn_assoc_banner_id = "19P4Y3M8FNN5JYX3PJ82"; amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "melissadanielle-20"; amzn_assoc_linkid = "b0a3ac99ac9804ec9f6eb4af74a69045"; Roberts talks about the gig economy as having unlimited potential and personal freedom. Unless you’re in an industry where you can charge a lot of money for minimal output, you’ll be juggling a lot of short-term contracts and assignments that could very well look like the full-time job Roberts eschews, minus the benefits and free donuts in the breakroom. If you’re looking at the gig economy model and you’re thinking of Lyft, Airbnb, and TaskRabbit, you don’t understand how these models work and who's actually benefiting from them in the long-term. The person using their car to give strangers rides, subletting their apartment short-term to help cover their rent, or assembling someone else’s Ikea furniture may be keeping their heads above water, but they are not enjoying the financial success and freedom at the level of the founders of these companies. While they may be in control of how they use their time to make money, this does not meet Roberts' definition of personal freedom. As someone who’s been reimagining and redefining the nature of work in my own life, I oscillate between the lure of the financial security that is the scheduled paycheck of a traditional 9-5 and the desire to wake up without an alarm clock, among other less than thrilling aspects of working for someone else. Success for me includes having a life I don’t need a vacation or a retirement from,

Thrive Market makes healthy eating simple and affordable. If you're thinking of investing in a done-for-you program, you may be interested in becoming an affiliate for a food, health, or wellness brand. While you should use or at least be familiar with the products you promote, especially if you stand to gain financially, affiliate marketing can be a great, low- or no-cost way to grow your health coaching practice. I've partnered with Thrive Market to help my clients make better choices in the kitchen and on the go. When you're just starting out as a health coach, it can feel like there's a million things you have to do before you get clients. I'm not big on worksheets and journaling, but these are some of the tools health coaches use with their clients. Health coaches also employ the use of meal plans and food and lifestyle challenges that run anywhere from three days to six weeks to introduce new prospects to a new way of eating and living. These may be free or offered as part of a paid wellness program that the client does by themselves or as part of a group, and may include pre-recorded and/or live audio, video, and coaching calls. Over the years, several graduates of health coach training programs have found their sweet spot in designing and selling turn-key wellness programs that includes everything a health coach needs to grow their health coaching practice. Not only do they provide the health coach with the actual program to deliver to the client, but also marketing materials to promote the program, scripts for email and video, a marketing calendar, and other resources to help them create a successful launch. This is great for the health coach who wants to save time and reach more people, but are they right for you? I invite you to hold off on that and figure out how to get the most from your existing training before you make another investment. With more than ten years in the health coaching profession, I've observed the evolution of the industry and the changes in marketing and trends around how to get clients and make money coaching. Your health coaching practice is unique to your personal and professional desires, so don't compare what you're doing or want to be doing with what others are doing. I received a copy of Eat Fat, Get Fit for free in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley. My biggest challenge with deciding to stay in Hawaii after giving it a trial run two winters ago was what to do about my books. Everyone’s all, just buy them again. OK, but I still need to do something with the actual books I left in Brooklyn. I also don’t want to buy them up again. Most of them I got for free or bought them used, and I feel like it’ll cost the same to buy them as to having them shipped to me. I packed them up in the pre-paid post office boxes last November and I’m still waiting for them. In the meantime, I soothe my anguish with my Kindle unlimited subscription along with the books I get to read for free in exchange for honest reviews. I plan on getting a library card, but since I don’t know how to return books on time, paying for a Kindle subscription is the same as paying all those fines to the Brooklyn Public Library over the years. Either way, it’s all been worth it. There’s a growing trend in online business marketing where instead of or in addition to creating newsletter optins and webinars, you write an ebook to build your audience. While you’re offering value in the ebook, the goal is to get people on your site and investing with you at a significantly higher level. While I’m curious as to how someone goes from buying an ebook for 2.99 to investing ten times that much in a program, ebooks are a smart marketing move for online business owners who want to grow their audience. Published authors have more credibility, even if they self-publish. The book I’m going to talk about today is one of those books.
