U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials say the shooting happened just before 7 p.m. after federal law enforcement tried to conduct a traffic stop in Minneapolis. The subject of the traffic stop was an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, DHS said. A DHS spokesperson said the subject of the traffic stop tried to run away from law enforcement before agents caught up with him, and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, two people came out of a nearby apartment and hit the law enforcement agent with a snow shovel and broom handle, according to DHS officials. The initial man involved in the traffic stop then got away from federal law enforcement and allegedly began hitting the agent, a DHS spokesperson said. The agent then fired his weapon and hit the man in the leg. All three people involved ran into a nearby apartment and barricaded themselves inside, DHS officials said. During a later press conference, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated that their department received a 911 call at around 6:51 p.m. about the shooting.
