ABOUT HOOP ATLAS HOOP ATLAS: Mapping the Remarkable Transformation of the Modern NBA (Mariner Books; on sale May 7) is written by by Kirk Goldsberry, the bestselling author of Sprawlball and one of the leading experts in basketball analytics. HOOP ATLAS examines how a handful of superstars have reshaped the sport over the past three decades and charted the course to the future of the NBA. Every few years, a special talent emerges and completely shakes up our understanding of how the NBA is supposed to operate. Whether it's their scoring ability, playmaking skills, or shooting prowess, these players and their tactics fundamentally challenge the traditional norms of the game and redefine what it means to be great on the court. For a period of time, these players each become an "Atlas" for the league, carrying the weight of the NBA on their shoulders while also paving the way for the future of the sport. Together, they map out the modern NBA's creation. HOOP ATLAS showcases the "Atlas" players whose influence has revolutionized the league and reframed greatness, from Michael Jordan to LeBron James to Nikola Jokic, with stops along the way for Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, and Steph Curry. As Goldsberry writes, "NBA superstars don't just dominate the league; some of them bend it to their will and transform aspects of gameplay." Revealing the ways in which these players have dramatically impacted the game, Goldsberry does a deep dive into the dominant trends of the modern NBA, including: · an unprecedented increase in offensive efficiency with shooting percentages now higher than ever · the corner 3 revolution which has changed the geography of the court · the rise in talent from abroad and how international stars have imported new moves and elevated gameplay · the recalibration of the center position by hyper-skilled playmaking big men who can do it all A vibrant new way to compare and debate the contributions of the best NBA players of all-time, HOOP ATLAS masterfully connects NBA past and present, providing a unique graphic journey through the transformation of the best basketball league in the world. With its captivating visuals and compelling storytelling, the book is as much fun to look at as it is to read. A "must-have" for basketball enthusiasts, HOOP ATLAS will leave readers with a deeper appreciation for the game and the players who have influenced it. Former Astronaut Dr. Cady Coleman, featured in new doc Space: The Longest Goodbye

5/6/2024
ABOUT SPACE: THE LONGEST GOODBYE In the next decade, NASA intends to send astronauts to Mars for the first time. To succeed, crew members must overcome unprecedented life-threatening challenges. And while many of these hazards are physical, the most elusive are psychological. Throughout their three-year absence, crew members won't be able to communicate with Earth in real time due to the immense distance. The psychological impact of this level of disconnectedness and isolation-both from mission control and loved ones-is impossible to predict, endangering the mission itself. Directed to mitigate this threat is Dr. Al Holland, a NASA psychologist whose job is to keep astronauts mentally stable in space. Space: The Longest Goodbye follows Holland, rookie astronauts Kayla Barron and Matthias Maurer, and former astronaut Cady Coleman, among others, as they grapple with the tension between their dream of reaching new frontiers and their basic human need to stay connected to home. This conflict transcends space travel: how do humans balance the quest for progress with a deep connection to history and each other? Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63KKJM4aOtE DR. CADY COLEMAN BIO Dr. Cady Coleman is a former NASA Astronaut and Air Force Colonel with more than 180 days in space, accumulated during two space shuttle missions and a six-month expedition to the International Space Station (ISS), where she acted as the Lead Robotics and Lead Science officer. Cady is a vocal advocate for inclusion in STEM/STEAM fields and a sought after speaker on a wide range of topics. She recently co-anchored ABC News Live's coverage of the SpaceX launch and the Perseverance Mars Rover landing. Other speaking highlights include the opening speech for TED 2011 from space, extensive NASA commentary for CNN, ABC and Fox and TED Unplugged 2019. Cady is the Global Explorer in Residence at Arizona State University and co-host of the podcast Mission: Interplanetary. She's also a research affiliate at the MIT Media Lab. Cady consults on space-related work for research and for the media. Cady lives in Western Massachusetts with her husband Josh Simpson, a glass artist, and their two sons. She is an amateur flute player, known for her "Space Duet" with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull and her work from space with the acclaimed Irish band, The Chieftains. Send Me: The True Story of a Mother at War

5/2/2024
Of the 1.3 million active-duty service members in the US military, only a tiny fraction are selected as “operators.” Shannon Kent was one of the first women to serve at this level and was widely recognized as one of the best. Shannon served as a Navy cryptologic technician, responsible for signals intelligence and electronic warfare, but her proficiency with language set her apart. She was assigned to a unit so secretive that its name can’t even be printed here, where she worked clandestinely to hunt the most wanted terrorists in the world. Send Me is Shannon’s heroic life story, revealing the truth of both her work and the challenges she faced while trying to raise a family with her husband Joe, himself a Special Forces soldier. He and Shannon met in a war zone, their love forged during a special operations training course, their dedication spanning multiple combat deployments and the birth of their two boys. It is the legacy of an extraordinary woman who rose to the apex of the military, working with the most elite forces in the world, lifting the veil from the life of a Special Forces family to share their duty, sacrifice, and humanity. When all failed to deliver recovery, she discovered Dr. Sergey Filonov’s dry fasting program and spent two months in Siberia under his care. Luanne Hunt - Country/Folk Artist

4/13/2024
Thanks to the Internet and social media, more and more independent artists have risen to worldwide prominence through hard work, perseverance and grassroots promotion. One of those “superstars” is country/folk and Americana singer/songwriter, Luanne Hunt. Throughout her illustrious career, the award-winning, four-time Grammy-balloted recording artist has built an impressive list of accomplishments, including scoring over twenty No. 1 hits on charts around the world, including New Music Weekly, Roots Music Report and the European Country Music Chart, to name a few. She is best known for her chart-topping single, “Christmas Without You” (a.k.a. “Patsy Cline’s Lost Christmas Song”), which was named by Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, one of the Top 25 Christmas Songs of All-time. Hunt, who was inducted into the Independent Superstars Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016, has been working hard at making quality music for twenty years. Her efforts paid off big time in 2007 when her CD, “Breaking Through,” produced two hit singles on U.S. and European Charts. The enchanting “Solace in The Wind” reached No. 1 on the European Country Music Association’s chart (Belgium) in July, 2010. Additionally, the song landed on the 2009 Grammy ballot in two categories: Best Country Song and Best Female Country Performance. And it topped the Roots Music Report Folk Charts for twelve consecutive weeks in 2008. Hunt began pursuing a professional music career in the mid-1990s. She found immediate success with her critically-acclaimed single “I Don’t Bother Counting,” which was frequently played on the former KIK FM country radio station in Orange County, California and on other stations throughout the Southwest. Over the years, the Pennsylvania native has received numerous industry awards. Along with being a five-time Josie Music Awards nominee, Hunt is a six-time American Songwriting Awards winner and also is the recipient of three “CD of the Year” awards from the National Traditional Country Music Association (NTCMA). https://luannehunt.com/ http://www.facebook.com/luannehuntindiecountrystar http://twitter.com/luannehunt http://soundcloud.com/luanne-hunt Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.
