Grab your Bible, settle in, and let’s step into the story together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: There’s a whole lot of shaking going on. Peter and John return to their community after being interrogated and threatened for boldly declaring the name of Jesus. These men, considered ordinary and untrained, stood before powerful religious leaders and testified to the truth of Christ resurrected. And after this confrontation, after choosing faithfulness over fear, they come back to their friends—and something remarkable happens: as they pray together, the whole place is shaken. They are filled again with the Holy Spirit and preach the word of God with boldness. What does this tell us? Wherever the Spirit of God is, things get stirred up—hearts are awakened, priorities are shifted, lives are refocused away from self and toward others. This is the story of the early church, but it’s meant to be our story too. God hasn’t stopped shaking things up. When we pray for boldness, for selflessness, for generosity, God answers. He fills us with the courage to embody the hope of Christ, just like he did with those first believers. As we look ahead to a new season—the holidays, filled with hopes, distractions, and busyness—it’s time to invite God to shake things up in our own hearts. The message we carry is one of joy and peace: “Joy to the world, the Lord has come. Peace on earth, goodwill toward men. Emmanuel, God is with us.” These aren’t just sentiments to be remembered in December—they’re truths meant to be lived out, to become visible as we let God’s Spirit work through us. Let’s make this a season where we pray deeper, where we ask for boldness to declare that every single person is loved by God. May God’s joy be our strength, his Spirit our guide, and may we become heralds of hope—proclaiming with our words and our lives that Jesus is risen, that he is present, and that his kingdom life is available to all. In today’s episode, we explore Nehemiah chapters 11 and 12, delving into the resettlement of Jerusalem and the dedication of its walls with joy, song, and thanksgiving. We meditate on the wisdom of Psalm 1, reflecting on what it means to be rooted and nourished in God’s word. Then, we witness a miraculous moment in Acts 3, where Peter and John encounter a man lame from birth at the temple gate—an encounter that becomes an invitation to new life through the power of Jesus. Join me as we move beyond the gates of expectation into the fullness of God’s love and restoration. Let’s settle in, open our hearts, and discover together what God wants to show us today. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He can take us beyond the beautiful gate—into life itself. The story in Acts 3 is the story of a man who sat daily outside the temple, unable to enter, always stopping just short of where life and the presence of God dwelled. He expected so little—asking only for a few coins from those passing by. Yet, when Peter and John arrive, the unexpected happens. Peter says to him, "I don't have any silver or gold for you, but I'll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk." And in that moment—through the living power of Christ—the man rises, not only from his physical brokenness, but beyond his limitations, into the temple, leaping and praising God. His friends couldn't get him through that gate. Moses and the prophets could not take him beyond. Our own strength and the expectations we settle for—none of it is enough to move us past the barriers that hold us back from God's life. But Jesus can. Through Peter, Jesus saw him, healed him, and took him farther than he ever imagined—past the gate, into the temple, into joy, into the life that God gives. This is the story not just for that man, but for all of us. How often do we sit outside the gates, hoping for a little relief, expecting so little, feeling stuck or limited by what we see or believe about ourselves? Yet Jesus meets us there, sees us completely, and calls us to rise—to walk with him into life, into restoration, into the fullness we were made for. He is the one who brings us in, who restores our souls, who lifts us far beyond anything we thought possible. He calls us to stand, to walk upright, to leap with joy. Let the abiding life of Christ lift you up and take you in—far past any gate, far past what you thought possible. Receive what Jesus has for you today—not just the small things you expect, but the abundance of life he gives. That's a prayer I have for my own soul, for my family, for my wife and daughters and son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He will succeed in you. That’s the message we hear echoed in today’s scripture. Jesus has accomplished all he set out to do—his resurrection, his pouring out of the Spirit, his kingdom coming among us. And yet, his work isn’t finished: he continues to restore, renew, and reign in the lives of those who call upon his name. The restoration of all things is underway, not just for those famous disciples—Peter, James, John, Mary Magdalene—but for you, too. The promise is sure: the God who began the good work within you will carry it on to completion until Christ returns. We hear in Acts 2 a picture of what it looks like when Jesus succeeds in a person’s life. People are pierced to the heart, they repent, their lives are reshaped by the Spirit—they devote themselves to teaching, to fellowship, to sharing, to prayer. There is awe and generosity, daily worship, and a deepening joy. The Spirit makes all things new. Jesus brings restoration to broken hearts, hope to the discouraged, belonging to the lonely. He is still at work, day by day, in you. So the invitation today is simple: let us see, believe, trust, and respond. Not just strive for achievement, but be open to receive. Fix your heart on the quiet work of grace, the gift of being made new through Christ, abiding in his love and peace. The hurried spirit of this world pushes us to earn, to prove, but the Spirit of God calls us to abide, to be made whole. That’s my prayer for my own soul. It’s the prayer I carry for my family—my wife, my daughters, and my son. And it is the prayer I have for you. May you see the work he is doing in you, may you believe it, and receive it. Christ will finish what he started. May it be so. In Nehemiah, we see a remarkable occasion—not simply of a lost Bible, but of an entire people losing touch with their story, with the words that revealed who they were and who God is. After seventy years of exile, the Israelites had lost public reading of Scripture, the lifeline to their identity and God’s faithful love. When they finally heard the words of the Law read aloud, their hearts broke open with weeping. Why? Because the story was new to them—a story of a loving parent always seeking the lost child, of a God whose faithfulness was never forgotten, even during years away in captivity. These exiled people were hearing for the first time that they were loved, that they were not forgotten. Their tears flowed because everything they believed about themselves was being rewritten: they were not just survivors, but beloved children, found by a seeking Father. Nehemiah tells them, “Don’t mourn or weep…for today is a sacred day before the Lord your God.” Because this is a day of celebration—what was lost had been found, what was dead was brought back to life. Doesn’t that sound like the Gospel? The story of a loving Father who seeks and finds us, his children? There are seasons for grief, but also seasons for joy, for feasting, for sharing good things. Let your heart be warmed by the discovery that you are chosen, loved, and remembered by God. Your inclusion in his story is no accident; he has longed for you, sought you, and made you his own through his Son. TODAY'S DEVOTION: When God breaks bread, their eyes are opened. Jesus opens the minds of these two travelers on the road to Emmaus. He enables them to understand the Scriptures. Unbeknownst to them, Jesus is right beside them, walking with them through the writings of Moses and the prophets, showing them how the story of Christ is woven into every single page. Then, in a moment, as he breaks the bread with them, the full reality of the resurrection is revealed—he is King, he is Messiah. With the breaking of bread and the sharing of a simple meal, their hearts are awakened, and a new understanding is given. Suddenly, everything comes into focus. They see that the message is one of forgiveness for all. The gospel is now clear and accessible to everyone who will turn and receive what God has done—to see their true selves in Christ: forgiven, loved, accepted. As we come to the Word of God by the power of the Spirit, as we open the Scriptures, the Scriptures also open us—to the reality of Christ’s presence, with us and in us. He demonstrates to us, again and again, that we are loved and forgiven, that he has given us the power, by his Spirit, to live his life within us. Christ in you—the hope of glory. This is the message, the gospel, that is transforming people all over the world. Whether you are hiding in an upper room, or walking a lonely road, Christ appears. He reveals himself, breaks open the bread of life, and weary travelers partake. Their hearts are warmed, they are made new, and a new journey in Christ begins. My prayer is that as we hear God’s Word each day, our hearts will be warmed, our vision cleared, and our identity settled—we will know who he is, and who we are in him. That’s a prayer I have for my own soul, for my family, for my wife, my daughter, my sons. And that’s a prayer I have for you. May it be so. I’m Hunter, your host, Bible reading coach, and fellow traveler as we open our hearts to not just read the Bible, but to encounter the God who is love. In today’s episode, we’ll walk through Nehemiah chapters 1 and 2, Psalm 133, and Luke 22, using the New Living Translation. You’ll hear Nehemiah’s passionate plea for his people, witness the disciples' Last Supper with Jesus, and reflect on what it truly means to serve in God’s kingdom—even when it runs counter to how the world defines greatness. Along the way, I’ll share a heartfelt prayer, some thoughts from my own life, and gratitude for listeners like you who make this daily journey possible. Settle in, take a deep breath, and let’s discover God’s enduring love together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He calls us to a different kind of greatness. The gospel reading today takes us to the upper room, where Jesus shares a meal with his disciples and prepares them for the suffering to come. As he breaks the bread and pours out the wine, he tells them plainly what will happen—his body will be given, his blood poured out for them. He shares that among them sits a betrayer, and the disciples, confused and alarmed, begin to question not just who will fail, but also who among them is the greatest. Jesus responds in a way that turns the world’s values upside down. He tells them that in his kingdom, greatness is not found in status, power, or position. Instead, the greatest is the one who serves. “For I am among you as one who serves,” Jesus says. The path of significance in God’s kingdom is radically different from the way of the world. The world says, “Prove yourself by your accomplishments, your influence, your authority.” But Jesus says, “Lay all of that down. Become a servant. That is true greatness.” And he doesn’t ask us to do anything he is not willing to do himself. Jesus is the king who serves, who gives, who lays down his life for his friends—even for those who will betray and deny him. And though we may have the best of intentions, just like Peter, we’re often powerless on our own to actually live out this way of love and humility. We want to be loyal, to be faithful, to stand strong. Yet we fall, we falter, we fail. But here is the comfort: Jesus prays for us, just as he prayed for Peter. He intercedes that our faith would not fail, and that once we have turned back—once we’ve come to the end of ourselves—we would strengthen others, not with our own strength, but with his. It is Christ’s strength, his mercy, his abiding life that equips us to be servants in his kingdom. This is the invitation of the gospel: to lay aside our striving for power, for influence, for greatness as the world defines it, and instead to find our place as servants of the King. We are called to offer the same mercy and love we have received, to embody the kingdom, to bring the message of God’s reconciling love to a world in need. That’s a prayer I have for my own soul. That’s a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that’s a prayer I have for you. May it be so. Let’s set our hearts homeward together on this October 7th edition of the Daily Radio Bible. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Ezra is leading an Exodus. As Moses led the people of Israel into the Promised Land, Ezra is leading an exodus out of Babylon. He’s going home. For 70 long years, the Israelites were held captive in Babylon. Now the tide's turned. God has once again shown himself strong, and the kings of the day are now bowing in deference to the God of Israel. They’re actually paying for their subjects to leave. The theme of Exodus is perhaps the most profound and significant theme that we read throughout all of Scripture. God is performing a grand exodus – He’s taking people from the kingdoms of this world into the kingdom of our God in Christ. When God’s gracious hand of deliverance is on his people, nothing can stop him. It may take some time—maybe 70 long years—but when the tide of God’s mercy has shifted, when the flood comes in, there’s nothing that will stop it. The gracious hand of our God was always upon Ezra, but now it is evident for all to see. Ezra was trusting. He was faithful. He was obedient, long before King Artaxerxes had his change of mind and heart. Jesus, too, is leading an Exodus. But he is far greater than Moses. He’s far greater than Ezra. And God’s gracious hand is certainly on his Son, Jesus—the Father exclaimed on multiple occasions: “This is my Son, whom I love.” People of every tribe and nation and language from every place on planet Earth are being led out and onto an exodus into life. In him, the destination is ultimately the same for all of us. We’re all headed back to that new Jerusalem in God’s new kingdom with our new King, our Liberator, our Jesus. Greater than Moses, greater than Ezra—He’s leading us back home. There may be days of great confusion and heartache, and lots of questions along the way, but rest assured: we are headed home. God is leading this exodus. And as we read in this story, they volunteered to go—it was open and available for everyone to return. So sign yourself up today, to walk with him as we walk with him. God’s gracious hand is upon the Son, and we are in him. So that gracious hand is upon you too. And this becomes more and more evident in our lives the more we set our hearts toward home. So let’s set our hearts homeward. Be swept up in the tide of mercy and love that is yours today. And know his gracious hand is upon you. That’s the prayer that I have for my own soul today. Things are happening behind the scenes in human history. God’s at work, but often, in the moment, it doesn’t look that way. But rest assured, he’s expertly arranging his story to work out just as he planned. And one day, there’s going to be a giant Aha moment, and it’s going to become very clear. Esther reminds us of this in this amazing little book. God’s name is never mentioned, and yet his hand is seen in every word and every line. And when we look at it from the end, when we see it from its conclusion, it becomes so obvious to us. Then it’s one giant, massive Aha. Of course, look how God was arranging things. Look how he was scheduling things just so. It’s not just true in Esther’s life—our lives are like that, too. It may not be so obvious in the moment, but in the end, when our life and story conclude, we will see that he was there the whole time. We will have that Aha moment. We will see and we will know, and we will be known. So it is in human history itself. When it concludes, we will see that God was at work through it all. It will be like no other Aha moment the world has ever known when we see the kingdom of God fully arrived. Until then, we can live with that Aha moment in mind. That’s what living by faith is. It’s trusting in God, even when it doesn’t seem like he’s here and it’s not obvious that he’s at work. That’s why we come to the Word of God every day. Esther and the prophets are reminding us that there is an Aha coming. If we pay close attention and we look at the Word carefully, we can see glimpses of what he’s up to. Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen. It gives us assurance about things we cannot see. God is at work. His hand is all over your story, right there in the thick of it. It’s hard to see sometimes, hard to recognize most times. But at the story’s conclusion, it’s one giant Aha. Of course, God, you are with me all the time. You never let me go. Live with this perspective today—that there’s an Aha coming. Hold closely to the Word, to the living Word. Let it drive you to the living Word until that day comes. That’s the prayer that I have for my own soul. That’s the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that’s a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. So settle in as we open the Scriptures, discover fresh encouragement, and remember above all: you are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Boys coming home. Both lost. Both slaves. One to his lusts and appetites, one to his pride. But God has a way of finding lost things. Just before this story, Jesus tells a parable of a lost sheep. He says God is like a good shepherd who finds lost sheep, brings them home on his shoulders, calls his friends together, throws a party because what was lost has now been found. And that's what we see with the younger brother. We're told he came to his senses—he saw something in his father, even from a long distance away, and so he comes home. But the good father, the good shepherd, still has some work to do. There's one lost sheep still to go. The older brother. He's lost too—not in his lusts and appetites, but in pride. Pride has drawn him to a distant land, far from his father's heart. And unlike his younger brother, he hasn't come to his senses yet. He's still lost. Of all the ways to be lost, this is perhaps the most tragic. And in the Father's words, we hear his broken and pleading heart: My dear son, all I have is yours. Come to your senses. My heart overflows for you. Don't let pride stand in the way, blinding you from your home and my heart. I'm standing right in front of you. God is a good father and a good shepherd, and he's always pursuing our hearts. You might come to your senses and see him from far off, or you might find him standing outside your own home. Either way, he's a good father, a good shepherd. He won't stop until he's found what he's looking for—until we are fully alive and come to join him in the party. So see your good father today. See the good shepherd today. See how he's always pursuing your heart—even today. He always has these words for you: My dear son, my dear daughter, all I have is yours. So come, let's join the party. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. So grab your Bible and settle in, because this episode is about opening your heart, being shaped by Scripture, and remembering just how deeply you are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: There's a party going on, and it seems like everyone's invited eventually. But those first recipients of the invitation valued their own lives above the master's, so they had all kinds of excuses. "I've got to tend to this. I just purchased that. This just happened to me." There's no lack of excuses offered. In the end, these folks were left out of the party by their own choosing and doing. But then—the poor, the crippled, the lame and blind—those with no self-interest to speak of, respond to the invitation. They had no excuses. They only had gratitude. Right on the heels of this story, Luke tells us that there were crowds following Jesus. But Jesus tests these crowds. It seems that they too were there because of their own self-interests. Jesus had just finished telling the story of people who had gotten caught up in pursuing their own interests over God. Now He has a whole crowd upon Him. And He tells them that if their following Him is about self-promotion, then they've got Him all wrong. One has to hate oneself, He says, and one's own life. Like the poor, blind, crippled, lame beggar—these people in the story, they hate their lives. They came to the banquet grateful that they were being invited to a new kind of life, that they were being seated at a table and honored by the Master. This kind of humility is the only requirement to be a disciple and have a seat at the table of God. So Jesus turns around and tells this large crowd of people who are pursuing their own self-interests: You cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own—your selfish ambition, your own attempts to save yourself, your pasts, your addictions, your pride, your arrogance, your... You've got to give up everything you own and hate it. And when you do that, the power to give up everything that owns you will be yours. There's so much that owns us—our need to be recognized, our pride, arrogance, our past, our shame. These things can own us. But Jesus can set us free. He invites us to the table. He wants us to recognize that indeed, we are poor and blind and miserable and beggars. But we've been invited to the banquet. When we respond and come to his table, all that once owned us will be no more. We will be seated with him at his banquet. We will be made new. May we recognize who we are apart from him. There is an invitation to come though, to Him at his table, and experience who you are in Him. And that's the prayer that I have for my own soul. So whether this is your first day or your twelfth year with us, settle in as we center our lives on the One who holds all things together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The world is falling down. Those are the headlines—then and now. Tragedy, disaster, violence—they fill the news and our lives with sorrow and confusion. When Jesus looked at the headlines of his own day, he spoke of Galileans killed by Pilate, and of people crushed when a tower fell in Siloam. He posed the question many of us have probably wondered: Were their suffering and deaths the sign that they were the worst sinners? Was this God’s judgment against them, or a measure of their worth in God’s eyes? But Jesus turns our thinking upside down. He tells us no, their suffering was not because they were the worst, or because God didn’t care, or that they were unimportant to Him. The world is broken, Jesus says. Towers fall, tragedy strikes, death comes—sometimes seemingly at random, sometimes to the pious and sometimes to the publican. This is the world we inhabit: a world fallen, groaning, filled with loss. But Jesus is not content just to comment on the news. He proclaims something entirely new: The kingdom of God is rising up. Where the world falls, God’s kingdom grows. The kingdom is like a gardener, patient with a barren fig tree, tending it, waiting for fruit. It’s like a woman bent over for eighteen years, suddenly raised up and set free. It’s like a tiny mustard seed that grows into a tree, so large that the birds can make their nests there. It’s yeast, small and hidden at first, yet permeating the whole loaf. Jesus brings good news into this falling world. He goes to Jerusalem; He is lifted up on a cross for this very reason—that the world, broken and lost, could be made new. He offers hope: not just for the world, but for each of us, for our own broken souls. He calls us to repent, to turn to Him, to let Him meet our needs and restore what is shattered in us. This is our invitation—to center our lives on the good news of Jesus, to trust Him and join Him in His mission. We can participate with Him: shining light in the darkness, extending mercy and justice, and bearing witness to the kingdom rising up in a world that so desperately needs it. If all the world’s a stage, then I want better lighting. That’s what an actor once said, and there’s something to that for all of us. On a stage, actors seek out the light; if they’re in the shadows, no one sees the story. In the life of faith, we need to do the same. We need to step out of the shadows and turn our faces to the true light—the light of God’s love. Jesus urges us in Luke 11, “Make sure that the light you think you have is not actually darkness. If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.” There are many competing lights in our lives. False lights, religious traditions, self-righteousness, fear-based theologies—all these things pose as light, but in truth, they can keep us locked in darkness, far from the warmth of God’s love. Even the Pharisees were caught in this trap: careful with tithes and rituals on the outside, but inside full of greed and indifference to justice and love. Jesus doesn’t scold them for vengeance’s sake, but out of a desperate, passionate desire for them to truly see, to be roused from their blindness so that the light might finally break through. Friend, the light of Christ has come into the darkness of this world. God’s love has shined, unconditional and unrelenting. Jesus is inviting us not just to admire the light, but to fill our eyes with it, to let his presence illuminate every shadow, to let his love reach into every dark corner in us. Queen Sheba and the people of Nineveh responded when they saw the light of God’s wisdom and mercy. Religion and pride and fear can eclipse it—but the invitation stands: step into the light. Check your heart—are you following the true light or surrendering to shadows? Let us keep our focus on Jesus, not on ourselves, our accomplishments, or traditions. Let us open ourselves to the radiant, floodlighting love of God. His light has come into our darkness. He is making all things new. So breathe deep, step boldly, and walk in the warmth of his love. Blessed are the eyes that see what you have seen, Jesus says to his disciples. Many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, but they didn't see it. They longed to hear what you hear, but they didn't hear it. In the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus asks us who we see. Do we see ourselves as the hero, the one who shows mercy, the good neighbor, the one who helps the person in need? It's easy to turn this gospel story into a morality tale and put ourselves in the place of the Good Samaritan. But that's not what Jesus is showing us. No, Jesus is telling us that we are the wounded one lying in the ditch—beaten, left half-dead, unable to help ourselves. We are the ones in desperate need of rescue. Religion and the world pass us by, unable or unwilling to help. But God, as the true Good Samaritan, is the hero. He sees us, comes to us, binds up our wounds, soothes us with oil and wine, and brings us to a place of rest and healing. He does for us what we cannot do for ourselves. He is the neighbor we have all been waiting for. Mary, sitting at his feet, gets it—she listens to every word and knows that Jesus is the one to be concerned about, the one who brings rescue, not our own efforts or striving. It is Jesus who finds us in the ditch and makes us whole. He cares for us and continues to provide, even when we don't see him at work. So today, when we ask, “How do I inherit eternal life? Who is the hero of my story?”—may we see clearly that it is Jesus who is the Good Samaritan, Jesus who justifies us, rescues us, and brings us life. Not the work of our hands, but the limitless mercy and love of God. Let us rejoice that we have such a Savior. Let us remember every day that it is not about our being the hero, but about sitting at the feet of the one who is. That’s the prayer I have for my soul. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Losing to Gain: The Way of the Cross If you hang on to your life, making it about you, insisting on your own way, you will lose your way. In the end, all your effort to gain will be a loss. The world's siren song is self and success. We think these are the marks of real living, the fruit of our hard work, the result of our cunning and sweat and our dedication. The world tells us that we will win and live with big bank accounts, big churches and big egos. That's the way of the world. And too often it can become the way of our churches, the way of our own lives. But Jesus points to something else. He points to the way of his kingdom. He says that we can gain all of the world and lose our soul. The way to live, the way to win in this kingdom is to daily take up a cross. People who carry crosses are giving evidence of their death. Jesus says, “I tell you the truth. Unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels, a plentiful harvest of new lives.” The life released in death is released in resurrection power, not the power of the flesh. And its results are abundant. The results are lives awakened to the love of God who comes to deliver us from our success and cravings for life on our own terms, those things that lead to nothing in the end. Jesus shows us the way to his kingdom. He shows us that he is the way to life and love and abundance by finding our lives in him, to be awakened to the life that is ours in Him. But we must turn away from the siren songs of this world and turn up the sound and music of heaven, the sound and the song of our Lord and Christ, who tells us, “Follow me and you will truly live.” And that's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so.
