Ep. 229: Psalm 112 For Dads (Part 3) - Leaving A Godly Legacy For Your Kids

11/14/2025
What kind of legacy are you really leaving for your kids – your name, or your Savior's? In this final week of our Psalm 112 series, Kent and Lawson walk through verses 9 and 10 and unpack what it means for a dad to be generous and righteous, not wicked and worried. They talk about "freely scattering" your gifts like seed in a field, and how that applies to dad stuff like your time, your connections, your money, and even your encouragement. You will hear how Psalm 112 points beyond our performance to the perfect righteousness of Jesus, why real legacy is more about your great-grandkids loving God's Word than anyone remembering your name, and how the "wicked being vexed" shows up today in jealousy, frustration, and comparison. The guys also get super practical about slowing down in Scripture, writing verses out by hand, and letting God's Word soak in instead of just bouncing off your busy day. If you have ever wrestled with feeling like you are not enough as a dad, or you are tempted to chase your own platform instead of God's purposes, this one is for you. In this episode you will learn: You are not a father on accident. Go read Psalm 112 (slowly!) and be a Father On Purpose. We've launched video now! Ep. 228: Psalm 112 For Dads (Part 2) – Generosity vs. Entitlement...What Kind of Dad Are You?

11/7/2025
What makes a man steady when life gets shaky? In part two of our Psalm 112 series, Kent and Lawson unpack verses 5–8 and discover that generosity isn't just about giving money—it's about living open-handed before God. From Lawson's trip to visit his daughter in New York to Kent's humbling "YMCA incident," this episode is packed with real-life moments that show how generosity and trust in the Lord go hand in hand. The guys talk about what it means to raise kids who see a dad that listens well, admits when he's wrong, and gives freely—whether that's time, encouragement, or attention. They also tackle the trap of entitlement, how to build a heart that isn't afraid of bad news, and why most dads underestimate the spiritual power of simple kindness. In this episode you'll hear: For the dad who wants to be steady, grateful, and rooted in God's character—this one's for you. We've launched video now! Ep. 227: Psalm 112 for Dads (Part 1) – How "Fear of the Lord" Shapes Your Home

10/31/2025
What does a "Psalm 112 man" actually look like in a busy dad's real life? Kent and Lawson kick off a three-week walk through Psalm 112 (vv. 1–4 today), unpacking what it means to fear the Lord, delight in His commands, and model four marks at home—upright, gracious, compassionate, and righteous. You'll hear practical cues you can use this week, like scheduled windows for texts/emails, small daily "deposits," and how to show grace in the grocery-store parking lot). We also talk perspective on "wealth and riches," why righteousness endures, and how the gospel fuels growth over time—without pretending dads have to be perfect. Pull up a chair, laugh with us, and leave with two or three doable steps for leading your family with joy and awe. You're not a father by accident—go be a Father On Purpose. We've launched video now! Ep. 226: David "Goose" Mills on Being a Lighthouse, Not a Shipwreck

10/24/2025
What if the fastest way to bond with your son wasn’t through another lecture—but with a hundred-pound sandbag and a fire? Today we sit down with military veteran and modern-day apologist David “Goose” Mills of Men’s Alliance Tribe, whose battle cry is this: isolation is terminal for dads. Goose shares three anchors for spiritual leadership at home—reject the lie that you’re disqualified, lead where you want your kids to go, and learn how to be a lighthouse, not just a shipwreck. We get super practical, unpacking why a paper Bible on the table matters, how to make small weekly “deposits” that compound over years, and why carving one hour to sharpen your axe (plus a standing date night) without guilt might be essential for your fatherhood rhythm. We also dive into apologetics for busy dads—Goose’s book Answer with Truth and his “Carry the Fire” training show how to raise kitchen-table apologists who can stand firm before college ever tests their faith. If you’ve been craving a band of brothers and a clear next step, today’s episode will light the way. Ep. 225: Perfect Love or Present Fear? A Dad’s Guide to Trusting God

10/17/2025
Has your "fear dial" felt like it's cranked to eleven lately? In this honest, funny, and practical conversation, Kent and Lawson unpack the tug-of-war between faith and fear—and why “biblical faith” isn’t faith in outcomes, it’s faith in a Person. You’ll hear a simple picture dads can use at the dinner table to explain how Jesus’ presence displaces fear, not just decreases it, plus a few stories from real dad life that’ll make you nod and laugh. We touch Mark 9:24 (“help my unbelief”), Hebrews 11, and Romans 10:17 without going seminary-level, then land on ways to model courageous trust for our kids this week. If your home has unknowns, this episode gives you a path from panic to peace. Ep. 224: The Pathway to Peace – From Panic To Praise

10/10/2025
Feeling the world spin a little too fast lately? In this honest conversation, Kent and Lawson unpack a simple five-step “Pathway to Peace” drawn from Philippians 4:6–9: panic, pause, pray, praise, and peace. While panic can often be an involuntary jolt, we discuss how intentional pausing resets your home’s tone, and how prayer and praise invite "the peace that surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4). Kent shares a fresh analogy that makes Christ's command “do not be anxious” feel doable, not dismissive, and Lawson tells a candid leadership story that every dad can learn from. Stay to the end for a special cameo—April reads Scripture that anchors the whole episode. We hope today's show helps you lead your family with a calm heart, steady hands, and a Christ-centered mindset. 10/3/2025
What do youth sports reveal about us as dads? More than we might want to admit. In this conversation with Townsend Church Pastor and Upward Sports League Director Tim Sparrow, Kent and Lawson dig into the highs and lows of parenting on the sidelines. From yellow cards to halftime prayers, Tim shares how sports can be more than competition—they can be a training ground for humility, discipleship, and Christ-like leadership. We touch on topics like: right Just a tease of some of Tim's wisdom: "When I feel ill-equipped because of my past experiences, I thank God for those experiences because that was him equipping me to be in the position that I'm in so that I can help people that are going through the same things." Ep. 222: Sherman Smith On The Privilege and Responsibility of Being a Father

9/26/2025
What happens when an NFL coach and lifelong disciple-maker sits down to talk about fatherhood, faith, and identity? In this conversation with Sherman Smith (former coach of the Seahawks and Titans), Kent and Lawson answer that question and uncover powerful lessons every dad needs to hear. Sherman shares how hiding God’s Word in his heart has shaped his life, why identity in Christ is the foundation for everything we do, and how our scars can become beauty marks when we pass wisdom to our kids. You’ll hear him connect football huddles, film study, and playbooks to the everyday grind of being a dad who follows Jesus. If you’ve ever felt like your past mistakes disqualify you, or you’ve struggled to balance being a great dad with being a godly husband, Sherman’s story will encourage you. His decades of coaching, fatherhood, and faith boil down to one simple truth: your greatest legacy isn’t on a scoreboard, it’s in the lives of your children and grandchildren. We hope today's episode and our conversation with Sherman challenges you to go and be a father on purpose. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Range Leather:Shop Range LeatherMJ15https://rangecoffee.com/ Fatherhood Guardhttps://manhoodjourney.org/donate/fatherhood-guard/ Don't Bench Yourself on Amazon State Of Biblical Fatherhoodhttp://manhoodjourney.org/sobfhttps://manhoodjourney.org/sobf-tools ------------------------------------------------------------------------- About our hosts: Kent EvansWise Guys: Unlocking Hidden Wisdom from the Men Around YouDon't Bench Yourself: How to Stay in the Game Even When You Want to QuitLawson Brown

Ep. 221: IDENTITY - Outcomes

9/19/2025
Dad, have you ever wondered what happens when you get your identity right? And what’s at stake when you get it wrong? In this final part of our 3-week series on identity, we dig into the outcomes of discovering our biblical identity. Jesus says we’re the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13), the light of the world (Matthew 5:14), and the branches connected to the Vine (John 15:5). When you know who you are in Christ, your whole life flows from that identity: your confidence, your joy, your witness, even your ability to disciple your kids. We’ll talk about why your security as a dad rests in your identity, how to steer your family away from lies, and how walking in truth helps you lead with peace and purpose. This isn’t just about knowing Scripture—it’s about living it out at the dinner table, in tough conversations, and in the daily grind of fatherhood. Our challenge to you is this: let God and his Word be the only places you find your identity.

Ep. 220: IDENTITY - Components

9/12/2025
Dad, who do you say you are? We live in a world that hands out labels like candy—your job, your personality type, your hobbies, your past. Some of those things matter, but not all of them belong in your identity bucket. In this episode, the second of a three part series on (you guessed it) IDENTITY, Kent and Lawson unpack the “I Am” statements of Jesus, explore what’s true only of Him, what’s true only of us, and what’s true of us both. From roles and skills to preferences and past experiences, we’ll wrestle with what shapes us—and what we shouldn't let define us. Bottom line? Your identifiers don't define your identity; God does. You’ll leave this episode with a clearer picture of your God-given identity, as well as some practical tools to help your kids sort through theirs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Range Leather:Shop Range LeatherMJ15https://rangecoffee.com/ Fatherhood Guardhttps://manhoodjourney.org/donate/fatherhood-guard/ Don't Bench Yourself on Amazon State Of Biblical Fatherhoodhttp://manhoodjourney.org/sobfhttps://manhoodjourney.org/sobf-tools ------------------------------------------------------------------------- About our hosts: Kent EvansWise Guys: Unlocking Hidden Wisdom from the Men Around YouDon't Bench Yourself: How to Stay in the Game Even When You Want to QuitLawson Brown

Ep. 219: IDENTITY - Foundations

9/5/2025
When it comes to your identity, do you ever feel the pull to let culture, career, or even past mistakes define who you are? The stakes are high, and not just for you, but for your kids too. This episode will begin a three-part series on Identity, and for today, we’ll start with the foundations we look to on our journey to find out what our identity truly is. Together we’ll walk through six guiding principles, things like why the Bible must be our source, why God (not those around us or even ourselves) decides who we are, and how our words shape the way our children see themselves. You’ll be reminded that your identity is fixed, your character is (or at least should be!) growing, and your influence as a dad is more powerful than you may realize. This isn’t just theory. It’s biblical, it’s practical, and it’s the kind of conversation that can change the way you parent this week.

Ep. 216: Blake asks THE BEST questions

8/15/2025
If you knew the answer to every question you ever asked, would you still ask them? Probably not. However, we can learn from the model of Jesus who had at least some of (if not all) the answers to every question he ever asked...and yet he still asked them. Why? We believe that at least part of that answer is because Scripture teaches that the heart of the wise is a curious heart (Proverbs 18:15, 20:5). Asking questions does more than reveal information. It keeps you humble. You have more influence asking good questions than making a bunch of statements. In today's episode, we take a lesson from one of Kent's friends named Blake, who models this lifestyle of asking great questions. Our challenge to you? This week, choose the path of curiosity.

Ep. 215: Three Key Ingredients of Biblical Fatherhood

8/8/2025
What does it really mean to be a biblical father? Not just a moral, modern, or “cool” dad, but one who shapes his kids’ hearts for the Lord. In this episode, we break fatherhood down into three essential ingredients—straight from Scripture—so you can parent with purpose. Whether you’re a brand-new dad or a seasoned veteran, you’ll find biblical encouragement, practical wisdom, and even some laughter along the way. Think of this episode as a distillation of who we are at our core here at Father On Purpose. If you've been along for the ride with us for the last 4 years or so, we owe you our gratitude. We’ve also got a special challenge for you. If you're a dad who's just joining us, welcome aboard. We hope God uses us to "spur you on toward love and good deeds" (Heb 10:24) and that you would fully embrace becoming a Father On Purpose.

Ep. 214: Whose Shoulders Are You Standing On?

8/1/2025
Dad, have you paused lately to think about who has helped you become the father, husband, and man you are today? Chances are, you didn't get here alone. We're all products of past generosity. This episode is all about recognizing and appreciating those who've supported us behind the scenes. We want to celebrate the people who rarely get the spotlight but who play essential roles in our lives and stories. Namely, today we want to honor Lawson Brown. He's co-host extraordinaire, a friend that sticks closer than a brother, and one of the reasons you're able to listen to this show today. Thank you Lawson. In today's episode, Kent dives into some fascinating examples from history—like the unseen heroes behind the translation of the Bible or the creation of "Amazing Grace"—and shares stories from his own life and ministry. Listen in, be encouraged, and then take the challenge: thank someone who's made a difference in your journey, and help your kids see the value of gratitude in action. Generosity fuels the kingdom, and you probably have a lot more to give than you think.

Ep. 213: How Do You Define Success?

7/25/2025
If you're anything like us, your answer to the title question might sound something like "well it depends...in what area?" What if we're asking the wrong question altogether? Our culture constantly pushes us to measure success in terms of work accomplishments, financial milestones, or social recognition. It's tempting to think of our life as an aggregate GPA, where we might be failing in one area, but hey, at least we're doing okay over here! It can be easy to hope our financial wins give us extra husband points, or our promotion at work makes up for all those missed ballgames. This week, we dive into powerful conversations exploring why success might be the wrong goal—and why faithfulness is the true target. We get into some of our favorite definitions of success, such as, "when those who know you best respect you the most" (thanks Mark!) or "being in the process of achieving a God-honoring goal." We'll also examine some biblical wisdom from Joshua, Psalms, Proverbs, and elsewhere to redefine our idea of prospering and effectiveness. Forget compartmentalizing life into separate scorecards. This episode is your invitation to embrace contentment, pursue incremental progress, and anchor your plans firmly in faithfulness to God. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shop Range LeatherMJ15https://rangecoffee.com/ https://manhoodjourney.org/donate/fatherhood-guard/ Don't Bench Yourself on Amazonhttp://manhoodjourney.org/sobfhttps://manhoodjourney.org/sobf-tools ------------------------------------------------------------------------- About our hosts: Kent EvansWise Guys: Unlocking Hidden Wisdom from the Men Around YouDon't Bench Yourself: How to Stay in the Game Even When You Want to QuitLawson Brown

Ep. 212: Let Go of the Blueprints, Let God Build the House

7/18/2025
Do you ever feel like everything depends on you? Providing for the family. Holding it all together. Making sure the house doesn’t fall apart—figuratively and literally. This mindset can feel noble, but it often leads to stress, anxiety, or pride. In this episode, we unpack Psalm 127 and Hebrews 3 to remind ourselves what it means to let God take the lead. He is the true Builder, and when we try to take that role from Him, we end up carrying a load we were never designed to bear. Through personal stories, biblical reflection, and some real talk around identity and control, we invite you to consider a better way. One marked by prayer, dependence, and freedom that comes from trusting God with both your work and your home. Ep. 211: Sammy Perez On Fatherhood After Failure

7/11/2025
Ever feel like your past is holding you back as a dad? You’re not alone—and you’re not disqualified. This week, we sit down with a very special guest and new friend of the show, Sammy Perez. He's a husband, father of four, and national voice for second chances through his work at Prison Fellowship. Sammy’s story is raw and real. From time behind bars to meeting Jesus in a prison cell and even finding his own father figure, his testimony will move you, but what God has done in his life since then and the work that has been done in his family is where the real story begins. We talk about: Whether you grew up with the wrong role models—or none at all—this episode is a hope-filled reminder that it’s never too late to begin again. Whenever you feel like life is running you over and it seems impossible that God could use you any more, soak in this reminder from Sammy: "I was created for more than this." Ep. 210: Aaron Harvie On Closeness with God

7/4/2025
today's episode, we have the pleasure of talking with pastor Aaron Harvie. Aaron is the senior pastor at Highview Baptist Church in Louisville, KY. Prior to his role there, he served as a Church Planting Mobilizer with the North American Mission Board and taught at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has an extensive background in pastoring and planting churches in Kentucky and Philadelphia. Aaron and Allison have 5 children: John, Grace, Luke, Porter, and Claire. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Ouachita Baptist University in 1995 and a Master of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1998. Needless to say, Aaron's a sharp dude. Not only that, he's a gold mine for dads who want to better disciple their kids. We get into some of his personal testimony, the importance of a close relationship with God's word, what it really means to "measure up" as a dad, and much more. You don't want to miss this one.
