Ep. 907 How to avoid treating the Bible like a self-help book. 1 John 2:7-14 Reading the Bible and making the most of your time in the Word is a beautiful goal. This podcast is all about letting the Word of Christ dwell in you richly and returning the favor in a sense by dwelling in the Word - not "doing" Bible study, not simply reading - but really moving into the Word with heart, soul, mind, and strength. It's being intentional in making a shift from treating the Word of God like a self-help book to letting it dwell in us as the living Word of God that it is.

What happens when you're reading the Bible and you come across a word or an idea that is new to you, confusing to you, or you just don't understand? Today we're going to talk about a simple way to approach God's Word, to grow in your ability to understand, and also help you trust God in the process. 4 tips you'll be really thankful to have...and super simple too! 2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. Numbers 1-19 || In the Wilderness Lesson 9 Review “Numbers” gets its name from the three times God calls for a census, but a better title is “In the Wilderness” because that’s where the entire account takes place. This is actually the title in the Hebrew Bible taken from the first verse: “The LORD spoke to Moses bamidbar – in the wilderness...” The long awaited promise of a land of their own is just a few days’ journey away, but, as we’ll see in the wilderness, God’s people have a long way to go before they will be able to come into the Land. How can we keep from singing? If we know God – really grasp what He’s accomplished for us, truly understand His overwhelming love, even if we can’t fully grasp or completely understand – if we begin to look into His Word for Him – and not for our own fix – then I believe the answer is – we cannot. Exodus 1-14 || The Reckless Love of God What is our greatest need? To be loved - and not just any ol' love...a love that really sees us, knows us, cares about us. We long for it, search for it and create a world around us that tries to invite it. Our need is met with a problem - we find ourselves incapable of really getting that need met from anything we can do and any relationship we make. With one incredible exception: God.
