It is important to note that this conversation was recorded in July of 2024 before the announcement from the FDA that they rejected the proposal from Lykos for MDMA Assisted Psychotherapy. Since that decision was made, a lot has changed in the world of psychedelic therapy but nonetheless, much of this conversation remains relevant now. Dr. Devon Christie, a Clinical Instructor at UBC Department of Medicine, is a dedicated family doctor with a focus in chronic pain and mental health. In her clinical work at the Canadian Pain and Regenerative Institute and online psychotherapy practice in Vancouver, BC, she brings a holistic approach to her patients and clients. As a former clinical investigator and study therapist in MDMA-assisted therapy research for PTSD with MAPS, Devon is at the forefront of psychedelic therapy advancements. Her extensive certifications in Functional Medicine, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Relational Somatic Therapy, Level 1 Internal Family Systems, MAPS MDMA-Assisted Therapy, and ketamine-assisted therapy underscore her commitment to comprehensive healing. Formerly the Numinus Senior Lead of Psychedelic Programs, Devon played a key role in developing and implementing psychedelic-assisted clinical and therapist training programs. Currently, she is proud to co-direct Embody Lab’s “Somatic Psychedelic Facilitation” certificate program with Atira Tan: together they provide a decolonizing approach to learning about and facilitating psychedelic healing. Devon also teaches therapists in renowned training programs such as CIIS, IPI, ATMA, and VITAL, prioritizing ethical practice, mindfulness, and trauma-specific skills. Devon's passion lies in reshaping the healthcare paradigm by integrating trauma-informed, bio-psycho-social approaches. Our Expansion Seminars are events that we host in-person in Vancouver every month or so where we bring luminaries in our community to come and speak to rotating topics related to psychedelics. In totday’s podcast episode, we invite you to meet Veronika - a strong and compassionate medicine woman who has dedicated herself to the art of healing. She is a graduate of the Phoenix Academy and Chiron Academy psychedelic and psychedelic integration training, and the School of Reverence psychedelic integration training programs. Additionally, Veronika has training in Advanced Applied Kinesiology (bone and organ setting) and has completed many workshops in support of her work. Veronika's healing journey began after experiencing a long and challenging postpartum journey. She discovered how to address pain in the body, mind, and spirit and became curious about the causes of trauma. This curiosity led her to the path of medicine work, where she discovered her calling as a medicine woman with a deep capacity for holding space. She has a remarkable ability to enter into the subconscious mind and uncover hidden patterns that lead us into pain and turmoil. In this episode, we discuss a variety of interesting topics. Welcome to Episode 18 of the The Flying Sage (https://theflyingsage.ca/) Podcast! In this episode we will be speaking with Doron & Tricia, avid members of The Flying Sage Community, about how psychedelics can be used to deepen intimacy in couples. Doron and Tricia met 33 years ago at a grocery store in Newport Beach California. After one month of knowing each other, they decided to move in together and the rest is history. They now have two kids. A son Jake who is 27 and their daughter Emily who is 25. After growing up in southern California, they lived in Los Angeles until 2003, then moved to Portland for about 10 years before immigrating to Canada and settling in Vancouver in 2013. Doron has been a realtor for about 25 years and Trish is in Marketing/Sales in retirement living. Doron's parents immigrated to the US from Israel in the early 1960s and his mom is a Holocaust survivor. He has one older brother and two younger sisters. Trish is an only child and her dad was an alcoholic and Mom suffered from a hereditary neurological disease and she has been on her own since she was 17 years old. In the last couple years, Doron and Tricia have started to explore bringing psychedelics into their relationship which has resulted in a beautiful and powerful expansion which they openly share during our conversation. Ever since Doron and Tricia shared pieces of their story with me, I have been very excited to have them come and share their journey on the podcast because I think it is especially inspiring for older adults who are curious about how psychedelics might help deepen and expand their own relationships. For this event, we explored how ketamine can be used therapeutically. Ketamine is the first legal psychedelic substance to be offered in a clinical setting in Canada. When used in a careful and mindful way, this powerful substance has shown the ability to promote neuroplasticity, produce insight and expand consciousness. It has also been shown to treat anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions. Ketamine is in a unique class when compared to other psychedelics and despite it being legally available to use, a lot of people are not aware of its many therapeutic properties. For this special event, we gathered a diverse lineup of speakers coming to share about ketamine’s therapeutic capacity, effects and best practices. The panel for this event included Mark Haden, Madison Nobbs, Mohit Bassi, Gabriel Largaespada and Helen Loshny. But ultimately, this is an important topic because we are all impacted by sexuality in one way or another. For this panel we brought together a group of four knowledgeable panelists who shared their insights and perspectives with us including Angela Leong, Daniel Kline, Jess Rodwell and Daka Ziji. Why sex and psychedelics? How can psychedelics be integrated into a therapeutic framework to explore and address aspects of sexual well-being and relationships? Welcome to Episode 12 of the The Flying Sage (https://theflyingsage.ca/) Podcast! This is a special pre-recorded episode from one of our live Expansion Seminars in Vancouver. These seminars are opportunities for our community to come together to hear from professionals in the psychedelic space and to share resources, research and knowledge about the benefits of psychedelics and we host them once per month. For our first seminar of the Fall we invited four experienced underground facilitators in Vancouver to discuss the work that they do and their approach to psychedelic healing. This was a fascinating panel and like any of these events, we could have spent hours and hours going deeper into the conversations that were unfolding. Some specific questions we addressed in the seminar include… What does it mean to be a psychedelic guide? What is the difference between a guide and a trip-sitter? What are some of the top qualities to look for in a psychedelic guide? How does healing work in psychedelic therapy? What is role of touch and music in psychedelic therapy? How can we create safety in psychedelic containers? How do you approach money? These are just some of the main questions we touched on during this conversation. Welcome to Episode 11 of the The Flying Sage (https://theflyingsage.ca/) Podcast! In this episode we will be speaking with Andre Zamani. Andre Zamani is a cognitive neuroscience researcher at the University of British Columbia, where he investigates the neurocognitive bases of spontaneous thought using methodological tools from behavioral experimentation, neuroimaging with fMRI, neurophenomenology, and psychological theory. Andre's focus on spontaneous thought is rooted in his curiosity towards topics such as social behaviour and experience, self-experience, and psychedelia, for which he believes a better understanding can be reached through clarifying the nature of thought itself. Andre completed a BA in Psychology and Neuroscience from the University of Puget Sound in 2019, an MA in Psychology from the University of British Columbia in 2023, and began pursuing a PhD in Psychology from the University of British Columbia in 2023. In this episode, we discuss the work that Andre is doing at UBC around spontaneous thought and how this overlaps in some ways with psychedelics. We discuss different paradigms of research, different research methods, the current research landscape of psychedelics as well as some interesting analogies of the mind.
