The Ultimate Relationship

Immersing myself in nature balances and refreshes me. It also constantly surprises me with intelligent communication. In this episode, I tell the story of how nature helped me make an important decision. I also tell a cat tale, offer a metaphor, explain how my car saved me, and describe a pleasant interlude with my Portuguese neighbour. On her way back from visiting all the neighbours’ gardens (and her cat friends), I noticed her staring at the beautiful old almond tree in the middle of the garden. I thought she was going to sharpen her nails on the bark. But no! In a hop, skip and a jump, she leapt onto the trunk and in a few more acrobatic moves, summitted the tree where she balanced on a skinny branch at the top. I stood there amazed, in total awe of her climbing skills. I am learning more about Portugal every day, especially the way of life and the habits of the people. That’s a good thing. But it’s also giving me the heads-up on what to avoid in finding the right location for my project. An anecdote in this episode explains. Also featured are some hairy cat ‘tails’, and the spontaneous mantras that have saved me in a couple of recent situations. Here is a brief extract: “At various times during the fires, I heard a continuous sound, like a monotone siren (which is an oxymoron, I know). I asked around and several people said it was most likely an alarm, the type that tells people to evacuate an area in the event of an emergency. Fortunately, it seemed far enough away, so I didn’t think it was relevant for me. And it might well have been that, because they are a ‘thing’. This episode is dominated by my experience of living through the worst fires in recent Portuguese history, just a couple of weeks ago. Frankly, I could have done without but it was educational, nonetheless. I posted daily throughout. Ironically, since then, it has been continuous torrential rain, gales, floods and power cuts. Fasten your seatbelt for this episode of ‘Epiphanies, Insights & Notes’. Here is a brief extract. “The theme of fires is omnipresent. Portugal is burning. I was prompted to go into the garden before I went to bed last night. It was late, around 1am. I often go out last thing to commune with the stars and our cosmic family, but I haven’t done so for the last 4 or 5 days because of the smoke. Last night, however, something nudged me towards the door. I ventured out and was shocked to see the night sky was red in the locations of the two nearby fires, which had been reduced to modest smoke earlier in the evening. I walked to the end of the garden to get a better view of the closest fire. Shocked again, as it had leapt into my valley and was now staring off with me, on the other side of the road. For a long time, I have felt that time is speeding up, certainly since the '80s. Initially, I thought it was due to a growing connectivity through technology. Email had only just been invented when I started working, the internet was basic, most businesses didn't have a website, mobile phones were new and the few business people who had one needed large muscles (or a trolley) to carry them around due to their size and weight. I was the proud owner of another new gadget, a fax machine..... What do you see when you look in the mirror? This is a question I asked myself many times. For most of my life, I just saw a face. It's so easy to lose your mojo, as life pulls and pushes you every which way, on a daily basis. In fact, moments of of equilibrium are generally the exception rather than the rule, for most of us. And once things start to go wrong, life can escalate in the blink of any eye. Regaining equilibrium is an art form.... I take my safety seriously, especially when travelling. It's not a lottery. I am responsible for me. I have been reviewing some old writings recently, which included insights and epiphanies that helped me to deal with the challenges I faced during a fast-moving period of my life. I thought I might write a book (this book, as it turns out). But maybe my interest in the past was also a little to do with approaching a big birthday. Whilst 'age' is not an institution I subscribe to (as I plan to live to an unconventionally old age, in mint condition), I am aware that I am entering a new phase of my life, which begged the question, 'Who am I?'. I have learned from personal experience (and also from studying metaphysics) that when you use the power of focused thought, and energise it with feeling, what you want to create becomes a reality in your future. Provided you remain balanced (which allows for connection to your instinct), synchronicity will guide you to it. But what often happens it that we block the process by being impatient. We doubt it will happen because we don't see the evidence. I live happily at both ends of the spectrum. Expansive, extrovert and centre-stage is how I lived during the first 20 years of my career, in the thick of it, in London. It was tough and stressful but, for the most part, I loved it. It took everything I had, day and night and my home was mostly for sleeping in. However, home has always been my sanctuary. The swirling blizzard continued relentlessly day and night and whipped the heavy snowfall up into drifts of 10 to 15 feet in some areas around the house, yard and fields. Bizarrely, other areas had almost no snow at all. It was surreal. The drive looked like a frozen sea, with huge waves coming over the hedge leaving the horse-walker and turn-out arena barely visible. Snow found its way into every building, underneath the doors, through joins in the walls, gaps in the roofs and every other nook and cranny. Nothing escaped. I gawped in amazement at yet another stunning sunset, and was filled with wonderment at how every one is unique and exquisite. That night, I observed the full moon, which was mesmerising in its brightness and perfection.
