We’ve come to the end of our journey together through God’s Big Story. But it’s not really the end! Our prayer is that families will keep learning together and growing together in faith! Talking about Heaven is a great place to start this week. Here are some ideas: Preschoolers: What do you want to do in Heaven? Who will you see there? How will you feel in Heaven? The Bible tells us there will be no crying, no hurts, no tears! There's a lot of myths and misinformation around the end of time. It tends to make imaginations run wild (as a quick Google search will show). Today we are learning more about Paul. Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas: Ask: How did Paul serve God? (He taught people about God). Paul travelled to Rome on a boat. How do you travel? How can you serve God? (ages 2-5) Paul says he doesn’t care if he goes to prison, he wants to finish the work that God gave him- which is to witness to others about God’s love. How can you serve God in that job (ages 6-9) Paul is clear that salvation is a gift from God-nothing that’s deserved or can be earned. Imagine you were in Paul's sandals. For 30 years you devoted your life to zealously carrying out a mission, traveling far and wide to spread the Gospel. Church leaders valued your teachings and copies of your letters spread throughout the churches you help build. You were on fire for Jesus, but your ministry ends with you alone in a cell awaiting execution. Paul never did see the fruits of his labor. He may have experienced doubts that all he sacrificed even mattered. But you know what he never doubted? The love and grace of Jesus that saved his life and spurred him on. It's the same love and grace that we have been given, and it's a message worth hearing every Sunday. (the Holy Spirit to live inside them) Who can receive the Holy Spirit? (Everyone who believes in God) The Holy Spirit gave Jesus’ disciples the power to speak in other languages. Teach your child a few words in another language. (ages 2-5) This chapter of The Story says Jesus’s followers had hearts that were glad and honest and true. How do you think they showed that? Talk a little bit about being glad, honest and true. If you could always live that way, how do you think people would look at you? (ages 6-9) As faith grew in the early church, so did persecution. Peter and John were beaten and arrested. Stephen was stoned to death. Why didn’t Christ’s followers just give up and hide? Why do you think faith thrives when there is persecution? It was an exciting time to be alive in Jerusalem back around AD 30-33. Today we are learning about the last things Jesus did on earth to show his great love for us! Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas: Ask: What happened to Jesus in this Bible story? (Jesus had dinner with his friends, prayed in a garden and died on a cross) Why did Jesus die? (He died for our sins) How did Jesus show his love for us? (By dying for our sins) Sing Jesus Loves Me (ages 2-5) If you didn’t know how it was going to turn out, this would be the saddest chapter of The Story. A lot of terrible things happened to Jesus. He was arrested, his friends let him down, and he was beaten and killed. When Jesus asked his disciples to pray for him, they fell asleep instead. Talk about a time that your friends let you down. Why is it so hard to stay awake sometimes when you’re praying at night? Will Jesus ever let you down? Why? (ages 6-9) In a poignant act of service, Jesus washes the disciples’ feet at the Last Supper. He was the ultimate leader and the ultimate servant. What most surprises you about Jesus washing his disciples’ feet? Do you think it is important for leaders to show they love and care for the people they’re leading? For thousands of years God's people have had no trouble getting into trouble. They've repeatedly gone their own way, sinned on grand scales, and tested the patience of a very patient God. If you confess Jesus as your Savior, every day you're being targeted. Satan wants nothing more than to separate God from His people, and he's really, really good at knowing how to go about it. We all have trials and temptations in life, and Satan has a great sense of timing. He knows when we're most vulnerable to his lies and what he can use to tempt us. That's a lot of doom and gloom, but it's the reality of life for a Christian. Of course, we're not without hope! Early in His ministry, Jesus endured (and conquered) Satan's temptations. We have tools against the devil's schemes—and a loving God on our side who will go to any length to save us. Why do you think the angels appeared to shepherds instead of powerful, rich people? Not a lot is recorded about Jesus’ growing-up years. Do you think Jesus was a good kid? Why do you think that? (ages 6-10)? John writes that life was in Jesus and “that life was the light for all people.” What do you think that means? Is God’s light for all people?
