45 - You Are a Woman of Valor! Re-envisioning the Proverbs 31 Woman

3/23/2022
Raise your hand if you've ever thought you were supposed to treat Proverbs 31 like a checklist? Like special instructions on how to be the perfect woman and wife? Hold up - doesn't that strike you as weird? Christ set us free and check lists aren't the way we operate anymore. Let's look at Proverbs 31 with fresh eyes and recognize the valor of all women as God created them. *CAUTION: I do mention miscarriage and infant mortality during part of the historical discussion of women's roles/norms. 44 - Repressing Emotions Is a Tool of the Oppressor; Reclaiming Emotions as a Gift from God Part 3

3/13/2022
We swim in a sea of patriarchy. As Elena Aguilar points out, we live and breathe and uphold the oppressive system, and rarely realize we're doing it. And patriarchy wants to suppress and invalidate emotion. So let's open our eyes a little bit, pray for clarity, and resist the oppressor by learning from our emotions instead of degrading them. Resources I Mention: Elena Aguilar's Coaching for Equity Hilary Jacobs Hendle's Time Magazine article "Ignoring Your Emotions Is Bad for Your Health. 43 - Identifying & Learning from Our Emotions; Reclaiming Emotions as a Gift from God Part 2

3/2/2022
Emotions are a natural, God-designed response to the world and people around us. And they're useful for alerting us when we have unmet needs. God is the only One able to meet all of our needs. Bringing our needs before Him is a beautiful, honest, and challenging process. Let's talk about it. Episodes 42 & 43 are setting the stage for episode 44, which is when we'll connect all this talk about emotions to how suppressing them is a tool of the oppressor. 42 - Reclaiming Emotion as a Gift from God Part 1

2/21/2022
Women are more emotional, right? More likely to break into hysterics and be completely irrational? Uhh, not so much. In today's episode we'll chat about how men and women are both gifted with emotions, yet how the hysterical women still haunts underlying beliefs and perceptions of women in today's society, including the church. We'll also talk microaggressions and how they look in society and church today. And let's not forget about all the emotions Jesus, the perfect human man, experienced while He walked the earth. We'll end with some practical applications and ways to support our sisters in Christ. Plus there might be an Office joke buried in there somewhere. Anyways, this is a big topic. One we'll need a few episodes to cover. So here's part one. Resources I Mention: Sarah Fielding's article "Despite Culturally Ingrained Stereotypes, Women Are Not More Emotional Than Men" in VeryWell Mind Maria Cohut, Ph.D.'s article "The controversy of 'female hysteria'" in Medical News Today Key Bible Verses: John 11:35, John 2, Matthew 26, Genesis 1:27 *** If this podcast has blessed you in some way, please consider leaving me a written review on Apple Podcasts. 41 - Paterfamilias & Understanding the Cultural Context of the Household Codes

2/1/2022
Context matters. Knowing the culture and history of the time period of Paul's letters allows us to see things we wouldn't be able to see otherwise. It allows us to get into the heads of Paul's audience a bit. And, for me at least, it allows us to see why the household codes were revolutionary in a completely different way than we would expect in today's culture. I think a good place to start is with understanding the paterfamilias, the male heads of household who had control in a way we don't recognize today (thank God). Resources I Mention: "The Roman Empire: Family Life" by PBS Gordon Fee's article "The Cultural Context of Ephesians 5:18-6:9" in CBE International Paul and Gender: Reclaiming the Apostle's Vision for Men and Women in Christ by Dr. Cynthia Long Westfall The Ministry of Women in the New Testament: Reclaiming the Biblical Vision for Church Leadership by Dorothy A. 40 - Are You Not Convinced? Why It’s Problematic to Default to Complementarian Theology

1/28/2022
Wait, is complementarian theology convincing? Sure, it's a commonly held theology and it's quite insisted upon by many influential men, but does it hold its weight? If you're like me and your formative Christian years were shaped by this theology, it's good to question why we so often tend to default to thinking complementarians must be right unless egalitarians can plead their case beyond a shadow of a doubt. But is that the right way to approach theology? Let's talk about it. 39 - Patriarchy Hurts the Church

1/18/2022
Recently, I've been hearing and reading quite a few incorrect perceptions of what patriarchy is and how it manifests itself in the church. This incorrect understanding is actually also harmful because it allows patriarchy to continue while de-legitimizing the real concerns of people who are trying to draw attention to the problem. In today's episode, we'll properly define patriarchy and then chat about two ways it harmfully manifests in the church. *** Time Stamps: 3:40 - definition of patriarchy 6:00 - example of patriarchy 7:20 - ideology upholding patriarchy 9:00 - how patriarchy shows up in the church 11:50 - two ways patriarchy affects/hurts the church *** Resource I Mention: Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes Du Mez Key Bible Verses: James 3:1, Romans 11-12 *** If this podcast has blessed you in some way, please consider leaving me a written review on Apple Podcasts. 38 - Calling Something “Biblical” Doesn’t Mean It’s Biblical; How the Term Is Used to Discredit Those Who Don’t Agree

1/13/2022
I know, I know. It's a common term. And oftentimes used correctly and innocuously. But the more I research, the more and more I'm seeing the term "Biblical" used as a weapon, tool, and defense to silence and discredit those who don't agree. So let's talk about it. And become more aware of how it's being used, by others as well as ourselves. 37 - Where Are All the Women?! A Challenge & Encouragement for the New Year

1/5/2022
Seriously, where are all the women? Isn't half the population composed of women? Weren't they there when Jesus walked, preached, and did miraculous signs? Didn't they follow Him around and learn from Him as disciples? Of course they did! Whether they're specifically mentioned or not, women were there. So let's challenge ourselves to look for them and learn from them in the New Year as we study the Bible.
