In this sermon, I want people to understand the unimaginable and unthinkable truth of the gospel—that the God of the universe is for them. Most people live their lives full of insecurity. When we are unsure of our worth and identity, we live an insecure life—a life that tries to earn and achieve its own meaning and significance. A life of insecurity is not fun. It’s not the abundant life. On Easter, we step into one of the most honest moments in all of Scripture—a woman standing outside a tomb, weeping in a world that feels both beautiful and broken. In John 20, Mary Magdalene comes face to face with the same question we all carry: What do we do with the pain of this world—and the pain within us? As she looks into the empty tomb, we discover that the resurrection of Jesus is not just a moment in history, but the answer to humanity’s deepest problem. What does it really mean to be a Christian? According to Paul, it’s not primarily about behavior, church attendance, or even emotional experiences—it’s about having God’s Spirit living inside you. We’re often told to “ask Jesus into your heart,” but the Bible offers something far better. Though sin still clings to us, those who are in Christ are no longer under condemnation because God came to us in Jesus and accomplished what we never could. In Romans 6, Paul helps us understand this critical truth: in order to change, grow, and experience a gospel-centered life, you must change the way you see yourself. You are no longer defined by what you have done or what has been done to you. You are now in Christ. Your identity is rooted in what Christ has done and what He has done to you. If you can change your thinking, you can transform your living. The old you is gone—crucified with Christ. The new you has come—raised with Christ. So put off the old self and refuse to let it have any claim on you. It’s time to start living the new life that is already yours in Him.
