SNS 115: Repentance Is... What?

4/29/2024
So, let me ask, what is your first reaction to the word repentance? I mean, did you just cringe a little bit? I don’t know about you, but I find that, too often, this word is one of the big, bad, negative words in the Christian vocabulary. When it is one of its most positive words. To see this will mean that we need to look at this through the same lens of what it means to be a Christian. Which is a following of Christ that involves a relationship leading to studentship leading to a life lived from what is learned. All three altogether, not one or the other. But all are intrinsically linked and in balance with each other. Scripture referenced: 2 Corinthians 7:10 ~ Godly sorrow brings repentance, leading to salvation. Luke 3:8 ~ Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. Acts 26:20 ~ Repent and turn to God and repentance is shown true by what you do. Luke 24:47 ~ Repentance leads to the forgiving of sins. Acts 3:19 ~ Sins are wiped out, forgiven, when we turn to God, that is repent. Mark 1:4; 4:12; Luke 3:3; Acts 2:38; 5:31; 8:22; and even Old Testament 2 Chronicles 7:14 all share repentance comes before forgiveness. SNS 114: Forgiving Others... Why It's Important

4/22/2024
Hello, Welcome to the Simple Not Shallow Podcast. My name is Charles, and this is the Coffee Side Chat series. So named because of this amazing cup of coffee sitting on the counter right beside me. We are coming to you from the hallowed halls of Mykitchen University. The kitchen counter is the perfect place to stand, talk, laugh, and learn together while sipping on a cup of beautiful coffee. Let me ask you a question. Why is forgiving others so important to our faith? Well, let’s kick this around while looking at it through the lens of what it means to be a Christian and see what we come up with. Now, this lens is a following of Jesus that involves a relationship leading to studentship leading to a life lived from what is learned. All three altogether, not one or the other. But all are intrinsically linked and in balance with each other. So, forgiving others… Why is it so important? Matthew 6:9-15 ~ The Lord’s Prayer, forgiveness linked to forgiving others. And Jesus saying that if we do not forgive others God will not forgive us. Matthew 22: 36-40 ~ The 2 greatest commands ever given and Jesus saying that these 2 from the basis for all other commands. 1 John 4:8, 20, 21 ~ If we do not love we do not know God. Proverbs 10:12; 1 Corinthians 13:5; and 1 Peter 4:8 ~ Love forgive, covers over sin. Proverbs 17:9 ~ Forgiveness promotes love. SNS 113: When God Seems Distant

4/15/2024
In this episode, we will do this by delving into the common experience of feeling that God has withdrawn from us as Christians. Many of us have encountered this feeling where he seems so distant, though there was a time when we felt so close to him. What’s up with that? In looking into this, I came up with two suggestions. I know there may be more, and please leave others in the comments section for me. Scripture Reference: Romans 8:11 ~ God makes his home in us. Hebrews 13:5 ~ God promises he will never leave or forsake us. Psalm 22 ~ King David feeling that God was distant. Psalm 44 ~ Son of Korah, the Psalmist, feels God is distant. 1 Kings 19 ~ Elijah feels God is distant. Matthew 27:46 ~ Jesus feels God the Father is distant. Isaiah 59:2 ~ Our sin hides God from us. Luke 9:1-6; 10:1-11; Mark 6:7-12 ~ Jesus "letting go of the disciple's hands" and sending them out two by two. Matthew 10 ~ A third mention of Jesus "letting go of the disciple's hands." SNS 112: The Best and the Worst Parts of A Christian Life

4/8/2024
In this episode, we are going to look at the best and worst parts of Christian life. And we are going to do this while looking through the lens of what it means to be a Christian, which is a following of Jesus that involves a relationship leading to studentship leading to living a life based on everything learned. Indeed, it is only as we look through this lens that we can see these parts as being fully the best and fully the worst. Let’s start with the best part. I like to start on the positive side of things. Don’t you? Oh, and before beginning, I may not mention them while we chat, but all Scriptures referenced will be listed in the description area of this podcast. Do take a moment and let me know if there are others I could have referenced. Thank you. Scriptures Referenced: John 3:16ff ~ Jesus only came because God loved. With no love, Jesus would not have come. 1 Corinthians 13; 1 John 4:17, 18; John 14:27; Ephesians 3:17-19; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 ~ what love does in us, for us, and through us. John 13: 34,35 ~ How others know we are followers of Jesus. John 15 ~ how we stay connected (abide in) with God. Matthew 22:34-40 ~ The 2 greatest commandments and they are the basis for all other commands. John 13:34; Romans 12:10; 1 John 4:7-21; John 15:12, 17; 1 Thessalonians 3:12; 1 Peter 4:8; 2 John 1:5; 1 John 3:23; Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 3:8 ~ Ten times love one another is listed. 1 John 4:8, 20, 21 ~ No love = no know God. Romans 14:22-23 ~ Sin is what is not from faith. James 2:19 ~ even demons believe God is the One True God and tremble. James 2:8-19; 1 Corinthians 13 ~ Tieing love to faith. Mark 7:15, 20-23 ~ Jesus telling us where sin comes from, within us. James 1:14-15 ~ as we are tempted by our own evil desires. 1 John 2:1,2 ~ If we sin, Jesus is our advocate with God the Father. SNS 111: Jesus Is... Who?

4/1/2024
In this episode, we are going to talk about the question: Who is Jesus? I know. In a fairly short video, are we going to explore this question fully? Yeah, no. But we are going to talk about a framework you can use while pursuing your relationship with him while learning who he is. So, what comes to mind when you hear the question, who is Jesus? You might be saying, “He is God.” Yes, but is that all we know about who he is? What else can you think of? “Lord and Savior?” Yes. What else? “Son of God, Our redeemer?” Yes, what else? “He died on the cross and was raised for our sins?” Yes, that is what he did, but who is he? “You going to keep asking that question or get on with the chat?” Alright, I’ll move on. But the reason I ask is that, well…. Scripture references: John 1:1-18 ~ Jesus is God, the Word of God through his being the One and Only God John 15:13,14 ~ He is our friend. Hebrews 2:9-18 ~ He is our brother. Acts 17:7, Revelation 1:5 ~ He is our King. Hebrews 3:1 ~ Our High Priest and intercessor. 2 Timothy 4:1, Acts 10:42, John 9:39 ~ Our Judge. John 16:12,13 ~ Jesus not overwhelming us with information. John 1 - whole book. I find this book to be the best for learning who Jesus is. Other Resources: A.W. SNS 110: What is Prayer?

3/29/2024
In this episode, we are going to consider the questions: what is prayer, and why is it so important? Many have talked about prayer, going into depth on the hows and whys of it all. So… what can a man, even one standing in these hallowed halls while chatting over a cup of coffee, contribute to the insights of such heavy hitters as these and other thoughtful scholars? I don’t know, but what better place to kick around an idea than at a kitchen counter over coffee? SNS 109: What is Christianity?

3/26/2024
In this episode, we are going to consider the question, what is Christianity? Or to phrase it another way, what does it mean to be a Christian? I mean, the goal here is to view every topic discussed through the lens of what it means to be a Christian. We should probably discuss what it means to be a Christian. Right? Here’s what I have found while looking through the Bible. Christianity is following Jesus. Now, before you say, “Gee, Captain Obvious, can you be any more obvious?” Why yes, yes I can. But follow me for just a second as I add a little more depth to this obvious statement. Scripture: It is a Relationship: Revelation 3:20 ~ I stand at the door and knock, if anyone opens the door, I will come in. I will dine with him and he with me. (The relationship begins. Doesn’t say, learn from me or do these things for me and I will dine [spend time] with you. Just open the door). Ephesians 5:1 ~ we are called beloved children. 1 John 4:7-21 ~ Those who do not love (love is always relational) do not even know God. (So the relationship must first be established before all else). Matthew 22:34-40 ~ The greatest commands are to love. (Relationship is a must.) Involves Studentship (Discipleship): Matthew 11:29 ~ Take my yoke upon you and LEARN from me. (The relationship means to be learning.) Matthew 28:19 ~ Tells us to go make Disciples, not converts. We are to be teachers and trainers; this implies the studentship that is part of the relationship. Yes, this is a very brief look at the Great Commission, and I do not mean to remove any other aspect from it. But I am simply highlighting the studentship aspect that is integral to it. John 15:15 ~ Jesus calls us friends because we know (have learned) what he has taught and made known to us. Involves Doing, the Religion aspect: James 2:17 ~ Faith without works is dead. It is not faith at all. A loving relationship that does nothing is not a loving relationship at all. James 1:27 ~ Religion is a way of life, not mere church-time worship. John 15:10 ~ Doing results from abiding in love (actively pursuing a relationship with God). If you abide, you keep the commands. Interesting that the command then given (v.12) is to love each other as he loves us. Examples of studentship and doing religion without a relationship: John 5:39 ~ Pharisees and Scribes pore over scriptures and miss out on Jesus. Luke 11:42; Matthew 23:23 ~ Doing religious things but neglecting what is really important. 1 Corinthians 13 ~ This chapter shows the true value of trying to study and do things without love. Without a relationship to Jesus, they are worthless. Can you love without doing? James 2:14-25 ~ No. For more of my stuff: To this episode on our website: leave comments here. https://www.simplenotshallow.com/the-sns-podcast/109 My Podcast: https://www.simplenotshallow.com/podcast-home-page The Simple Not Shallow website: https://www.simplenotshallow.com To the internet home of Mykitchen U: https://www.simplenotshallow.com/mykitchen-u If you like what you have heard and would like a memento... or at least a coffee mug. SNS 108: New Series Introduction

3/26/2024
I’m Charles, and this is the Simple Not Shallow Podcast. In this episode, I want to introduce our new series of Podcast episodes. Entitled the Coffee-side Chat series. So named because of this cup of coffee on the counter right beside me. And we’re coming to you from the hallowed halls of Mykitchen University. The kitchen table is the perfect place to sit, talk, laugh, and learn together. While sipping on a cup of beautiful coffee. I have found that too often, the lens we use tends to be a favorite aspect of faith or lesson that…. Let me put it this way: We can get so focused on that one aspect, that one tree, if you will, that we lose sight of that tree's place in the great and dense forest that is the Christian faith. I guess you could say that I want to help us see not only that one tree but that tree's place in the rich dense forest as well. And yes, we will take God and his love very seriously, not ourselves. One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is to not take myself too seriously. In fact, you could say that I take myself with a grain of salt. And, as a Christian, I’m supposed to treat everyone as I would wish to be treated, right, the Golden Rule. So, I promise I will take you with a grain of salt as well. And perhaps that way we will get some wonderful conversations going about our faith. 12/6/2022
After our last conversation, it took Old Man Tom a few days to get back by the house. But as old as he is, his memory is tack sharp. Indeed, it was he who reminded me that he had wanted to follow up and share what our last conversation had inspired. He started off by saying, “Good morning, Charles. Hey, have you heard the rumor about the butter?” “The butter? No.” “Oh, I’m not going to spread it.” Now, I may have grimaced just a little bit. Because he began to laugh even louder. Once he stopped laughing, he said, “Do you remember how we left off our last conversation?” “Oh, yeah. But I’m not going to spread it.” Ok, that’s what I wish I had said. What I actually said was, “Um, you said that there was something that your thoughts on being perfect brought to mind. Correct?” “You remember!” I simply smiled; well, no sense in telling him just how barely I remembered. And then, I said, “Tom, come on in, brother, and I’ll put the coffee on. Now, if you haven’t met Old Tom just yet, despite his being full of such ‘quaint’ jokes, he is a man with uncommon clarity of thought. You might say he is a man blessed with more common sense than many a drug store has pills. Also, as he is usually a man of few words, I find it is generally well worth the listen when he does say something. So, I was genuinely interested in hearing him out. SNS 106: Christ and the Perfect Person

11/22/2022
The other day, as I was sweeping off my front porch, Old Man Tom came by and asked me something that caught me slightly off guard. He started simply enough by saying, “Good morning, Charles.” But it is what he said next that caught me off-guard. He said, “Did you know the earth is 70% water?” “Had no idea.” “It is. And as importantly, all that is uncarbonated.” I stared at him for a moment. Then hesitantly asked, “And?” “Well, technically, then, it is flat.” I had to ask. Sometimes, there is not enough coffee in the whole world. And I am not sure what he found funnier, his joke or my reaction. Either way, he was laughing so hard that it was a good 20 minutes before he could say anything else. Finally, he said, “Ok, I also have a serious question for you. May I?” “A question, not a joke.” “Yes.” “Sure, what is it.” “Has anyone ever called you perfect?” I had to ask. “Well, I was once called a perfect goofball, does that count?” He laughed some more, shook his head, and said, “No. No, it doesn’t.” Now, if you haven’t met Old Tom just yet, for all his dad jokes, he is a man with uncommon clarity of thought. You might say he is a man blessed with more common sense than a drug store has pills. Also, as he is usually a man of few words, I have found that it is usually well worth the listen when he does have something to say. Knowing this, I said, “Tom, this is going to take at least a full pot of coffee to talk about, isn’t it?” He smiled big and said, “Oh yeah, at least one.” I said, “All right, come on in, Tom, and I’ll put the coffee on.” You can view the full transcript of this episode on its homepage on my website: https://www.simplenotshallow.com/the-sns-podcast/106 If you don't mind, let me know what you think about this, in the comment box found on the same page. SNS 105: Christ, the Narrow, the Difficult, and the Abundant Life?

11/8/2022
The other day, I was speaking with Old Man Tom. Old Man Tom, that’s what everybody calls him anyway. Nobody really knows why. Personally, I think it’s because he’s older than dirt. But whatever the reason, he is a very sage individual, having more common sense than a drug store has pills. Anyway, on that particular day, the first thing he said was, “Charles, I’ve had an epiphany about how I clean house.” “An epiphany about cleaning house?” “Oh yeah. It comes from the saying, “From dust you came, and to dust, you will return.” “I’m familiar with the saying, but what has this to do with cleaning your house?” “Well, this is why I don’t dust. It might be someone I know.” I laughed at that one. I said, “I got to give you credit for that one, Tom. That was actually a good one. Care for some coffee?” He said, “Yes, please. Then I’ll have a question for you.” How did I know? “Ok,” I said, “what’s the question?” “As the wise philosopher once said, ‘Coffee first, questions second.’” “Don’t know who this wise… person is, but I’ll second that. Coffee first, then we talk. Come on in, and I’ll put some on. So, what’s the question we’re going to talk about?” “Jesus said that narrow is the gate and restricted is the way that leads to life (Matthew 7:13-14). He also said that he came to give an abundance of life to those who believe in him (John 10:10). My question is, how does this work? How can the narrow gate and the restricted, difficult path lead to an abundance of life?” “French Roast.” “What?” “French Roast - this is definitely a French Roast type of question. And believe it or not, this will be my first coffee of the day.” “First of the day? Well then,” he said with a smile, “it is fortunate for you that I came by with my epiphany, is it not?” Sometimes, it’s best to remain silent and just make the coffee, which is what I did. SNS 104: Christ and What Sin Is

10/25/2022
The other day, a good friend of mine stopped by, Old Man Tom. Old Man Tom, that’s what everybody calls him. Though, I genuinely don't know why that is. Whether that is because he’s a wise old soul or, simply put, he’s just older than dirt. I like to think it’s because he’s older than dirt. But whatever the reason, he is very sage, having more common sense than a drug store has pills. Anyway, he came by and said, “Good morning, Charles.” “Morning, Tom.” “Charles, as I was drinking coffee this morning, I felt the need to offer you some encouragement. Never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do. Just look at Beethoven; everyone told him he would never be a musician just because he was deaf. But did he listen?” “Well, it was a good morning.” He was way too pleased with himself. After his laughter subsided, he said, “Seriously though, I do have a question for you?” “A question, not another joke?” “Oh, yes. A question.” “Ok.” “What do you think sin is?” “I’d prefer a joke.” “You’re developing a sense of humor! Excellent.” “No…..” “Anyway, this is what has been on my mind this morning. And it couldn’t hurt to simply talk about it over coffee, could it?” “You, Tom, are a very unique individual.” “Yes, I am. How about that cup of coffee? SNS 103: Christianity and the Whole Life

10/11/2022
The other day, I was speaking with Old Man Tom, a good friend of mine; Old Man Tom, that’s what everybody calls him anyway. Though, I truly don't know why that is. Whether that is because he’s a wise old soul or, simply put, because he is older than dirt. I like to think it’s cause he’s older than dirt. But whatever the reason, he is a very sage individual, having more common sense than a drug store has pills. I’m telling ya. Anyway, he came by the other day and asked me a question; he said, “Hey Charles,” because that’s what everybody calls me, Charles. He says, “Hey Charles, how would you explain Christianity in just a sentence or two?” Then, without missing a beat or waiting for my reply, he answered his own question. “I would say that following Jesus is about living a whole life from our whole life. Isn’t that an interesting thought?” Well, indeed it was. It was so interesting to me that I asked Tom if he wouldn’t mind taking the time to explain it to me. He said, “Well, you know, I might be persuaded to do that for a very good cup of coffee.” Fortunately, I just happened to have some excellent coffee stashed in the kitchen. I said, “Come on in, Tom; I’ll put some on.” Do come on in and listen to this wonderful story. SNS 102: Of Christians and Anger

5/17/2022
This past week I have had cause to get angry at work. Now, the ins and outs of why are not crucial to our chat. For we all know what it’s like to get mad at work, right? But the anger itself is what is of interest. Because it brought to mind an age-old question; is getting angry a sin? Is it a sign of weak faith? This is what we are going to chat about in this episode. Now, my name is Charles, Charles Yerkes, and this is the first episode of our new Coffee-side Chat series here on the Simple Not Shallow Podcast. As we have been sharing over the past three weeks, the Psalm Tuesday series is taking a small break. This is because I still need to complete work on the remaining Psalms to continue that series. It will come back from vacation once work on those psalms is done. However, this podcast is still for those who want a deeper faith and not an aggressively mediocre one. The Coffee-side Chat gets its name from… well, because there is a cup of coffee sitting beside me, this very instant, and we are currently chatting. Well, technically, I’m chatting; you’re listening. But let’s not get hung up on technicalities just yet. There will be time for that later. Also, before we begin, I am proud to say that this podcast is sponsored by our book, Psalms 1-72, A Simple Not Shallow Presentation. This book is a collection of the first 72 Psalms, presenting them in a manner that helps reveal the prayerfulness of the Psalms. That is exciting! I’ve provided a couple of links in the show notes for this episode. One to my website where you can learn more about this book and another to where it is located on Amazon.com, just for your convenience. So, go ahead and collect your copy today. But for now, grab yourself some coffee and let the chat begin. If you don't mind, let me know what you think about this? You can do this in the comment box here: https://www.simplenotshallow.com/the-sns-podcast/102 Scripture Passages referenced: Mark 3:5; 10:14; John 11:33,38 ~ Jesus got angry. James 1:19, 20 ~ Be slow to anger because your anger will not accomplish what God desires. Ephesians 4:26 ~ Be angry but sin not. Ephesians 4:31 ~ Get rid of bitterness, wrath, anger. SNS 101: Of God and Blessing Others, Psalm 72

5/10/2022
Can I just say that once again, the Psalms have turned what I have thought about asking for God’s blessing on its head? Here, the psalmist asks God to bless the king so that others may also become blessed. Also, this gives a whole new perspective to something that two other psalms say. For instance, in Psalm 1…. Well, tell you what, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s first hear the psalm; then, we can chat. Also, before beginning, this podcast is sponsored by our book, Psalms 1-72, A Simple Not Shallow Presentation. This book collects the Psalms heard on the Psalm Tuesday episodes. SNS 100: Of Troubles and Good Cheer, Psalm 71

5/3/2022
Can I just say that, once again, I have been pleasantly surprised to find in the Psalms a most excellent example of a teaching of Jesus? Yes, a teaching of Jesus and one from James. The teaching of Jesus is that of having troubles in this world but to be of good cheer found in John 16:33. And the one from James is that trials should be considered pure joy as they help produce perseverance, which brings about spiritual maturity and complete faith, which is found in James1:2. Where do I find this here? Well, in this psalm…. Tell you what, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s first hear the psalm; then, we can chat. SNS 099: Pain, Sorrow, and Worship? Psalm 70

4/26/2022
Can I just say that I never considered pain and sorrow to be a part of a worship service before? Yet, here, the psalmist is very honest about his pain, sorrow, and despair, and still, this Psalm is contained in the prayer book of the Bible. Now, let’s keep perspective, the pain and sorrow are not being celebrated but the Psalmist’s response to them is a profound act of faith and worship. Now, well…. SNS 098: Praising God When Things Look Hopeless, Psalm 69

4/19/2022
Can I just say that this Psalm contains so much that wants to be spoken about; that it has been difficult deciding what to talk about? For instance, there is the topic of Christians encountering despair and how to deal with it. There is also the topic of just how gritty and realistic Scripture can be in portraying hard times and difficult emotions. So much to talk about and so little time. So, to choose just one topic, the one thing that stood out a little more than the others is the response to all this grit, emotion, and reality that God values the most, the one that pleases him more than mere religious ritual. Tell you what, before delving into this, let’s listen to the Psalm, and then we’ll talk about what you heard. SNS 097: What Did I Just Hear? Psalm 68

4/12/2022
Can I just say that while context is king, tone may well be the Secretary of State? It is amazing how the tone used when we hear or read something colors how we listen to it; if we listen to it. For instance, the word “Hello.” Depending on the tone, it can be very warm and welcoming, or cold and even almost rude. The same is true of how we read the Bible. Isn’t that intriguing? The Bible can sound very warm, welcoming, and compassionate, or it can sound aloof, cold, and holier than thou. Which is a bit ironic, but…. The exact same words, the same exact verses, yet two very different presentations, two very different outcomes. The first leads to tuning in to what the Bible says and learning to love. The second to tuning it out, barely hearing what is on the surface of the passage, and so being more callous than we need to be. Tell you what, before chatting more, let’s listen to the Psalm, and then we’ll talk about what you heard. SNS 096: The Profoundness of Blessings Psalm 67

4/5/2022
Can I just say that moving is one of my least favorite things in the world to do? But for the past two weeks, that’s where I have been, moving. But thankfully, that is all behind us now. I apologize that it got in the way of getting this episode to you an episode last week. But we’re back, we’re moving, and here we go with episode 96. Thank you for understanding. Enjoy. Now, can I just say, concerning this Psalm, that the thing that impressed me most in this concise poem is that the Psalmist covers so much ground? This is perhaps the shortest Psalm we have ever done, but it is absolutely full of information. It is all about blessings—God’s blessing his people and the Psalmist celebrating that blessing. Yet, instead of quickly passing over this psalm and relegating it to a simple psalm about God’s blessings, let’s take a moment to steep in what is actually being said. When we do this, we find that it reveals something profoundly profound about those blessings. Well, I tell you what, let’s first hear the psalm. Then we’ll chat about it.
