"Suckers and Losers", The PCR Controversy

9/5/2020
In this episode, I explain how to reasonably consider the recent claim about President Trump that he called deceased veterans "suckers" and "losers", using the situation to demonstrate how confirmation bias stops rational thought. Then, I address the recent finding that labs are "over-cooking" PCR tests and identifying people as "HCoV-19 positive" who may not actually be contagious, and what that means for us going forward. Ep 6: Thinking About Thinking Pt 2 - Closure

8/4/2020
www.instagram.com/klsauthor/ www.patreon.com/klswriter/ Last time we chatted, I presented a basic overview of how humans make meaning out of the things we perceive. We talked about how “top-down” and “bottom-up” processing work independently and together to take data and synthesize it into a whole that is coherent to us but also consistent with the pre-existing beliefs and values that we brought to the analysis. Today we will continue on this road but narrow the focus a little to dissect...

Thinking About Thinking, Part 1

7/29/2020
Today we are starting a series on thinking. I am a psychologist by training, so I’m getting back into my lane a little after spending some time pretending to be a virologist. The topic is always timely, but more so today after we have seen a recent resurgence in viral videos and other information blasts that have rekindled controversy, conspiracy, and confabulation. Paraphrasing what someone said to me recently, it is tempting to throw up one’s hands in defeat when we are inundated with...

Ep. 4 - Case Counts, Growth Rates, and Exponents, Oh My!

7/23/2020
We see articles constantly about “new records” in daily cases and “surging” this and “exploding” that, but often the math underneath these headlines is incomplete. When we are done, you should be a little more familiar with how to correctly describe viral spread, which is known mathematically as an exponential growth phenomenon. The charts I will reference are located at my Instagram site (klsauthor) – there is a post with nine images there that will help you follow along. Support the show

Ep. 2 - Masks and Testing

7/15/2020
Today’s episode will address the topic of masks and testing in light of the current pandemic. It’s very important to understand that these two topics are necessarily linked. You can’t really understand the necessity of mask behavior without also understanding the mechanics of the test that is used to detect SARS-hCoV-19 infections. So a considerable part of this episode will focus on testing of both types – PCR and antibody. Once that foundation is laid, we can come to a reasonable...
