The Road to Recovery Tour: Skyler Ray’s Journey Through Music and Sobriety

8/26/2025
There’s something about music that cuts deeper than words alone. A single lyric, a familiar melody, or even the rhythm of a beat can stir memories we thought were long forgotten and awaken parts of ourselves we may have buried. It reminds us of who we were before the chaos, before the pain, before substances clouded our vision. Pursuing our favorite hobbies before substance use can be a lifeline back to our core, a way of reclaiming the truest version of ourselves. Listen in as our guest this week shares how he turned his lifelong passion into purpose and found a way back home to himself. Skyler Ray was born on November 28, 1990, in San Jose, California. He grew up in foster homes and spent multiple years homeless—going from being locked up to sleeping on the sidewalks of downtown Portland. His music is deeply rooted in his life experiences, including addiction, incarceration, and homelessness. He is a firm believer in spreading hope and giving back to the community he once helped destroy. Since being released from prison on November 30, 2018, Skyler has refocused on his music and is determined to share his message with the world. He continues to live in Portland, Oregon, and remains clean and sober. In this conversation, Jamie Demeris and Skyler Ray discuss what it really takes to rebuild a life after addiction. Together, they explore the mindset shifts that turn relapse into resilience, why consistency and small steps matter more than giant leaps, and how reconnecting with your passions can anchor you in sobriety. Skyler shares how music became both his therapy and his message, and why vulnerability and self-respect are the foundation of lasting recovery. Whether you’re in recovery, supporting a loved one, or just searching for hope, this conversation will remind you that transformation is always possible." Topics Discussed: The importance of continuously working on yourself Why relapse isn’t a step back and how you can stand up stronger Pursuing your passions and who you are at your core in sobriety Why small, consistent steps make the most impact Reconnecting with your why & remembering who you were before substances Learning to love and respect yourself — CHAPTERS: 0:00 Introduction to Positive Recovery MD 01:10 Meet Skylar Ray: From Addiction to Recovery 02:16 Skylar's Battle with Addiction 03:56 Turning Point: Embracing Music and Sobriety 12:50 The Road to Recovery Tour 19:35 Overcoming Disbelief and Embracing Change 22:54 Climbing the Corporate Ladder 23:43 A Humbling Demotion 24:17 Prison Reflections and Personal Growth 26:22 Musical Journey and Personal Transformation 29:14 The Power of Sound and Recovery 33:23 Chasing Dreams and Overcoming Challenges 40:33 Tour Dates and Final Thoughts — Connect with Skyler Ray: Road to Recovery Tour: https://www.officialskylerray.com/road-to-recovery-tour Website: www.officialskylerray.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/therealSkylerRay — Connect with PRC on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters FB: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter LI: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Want even more expert insights and support on the recovery journey? Setting Your Authentic Foundation for Recovery with Glenn Carosella

10/1/2024
The beautiful thing about recovery is that it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each individual has their own unique journey and different strategies that work for them. The key to long-term success, though, lies in embracing a variety of tools and methods, allowing you to find what resonates most and keeps you moving forward. In this conversation, Gust Host, Jamie Demeris and returning guest, Glenn Carosella, discuss the importance of understanding the deeper perspective behind your “why” and the inner-work it takes to find systems that work best for you. They also discuss the notion behind the biological understanding of addiction and why you have to keep doing the work to overcome the negative pathways. Curious to learn more about our guest? Glenn Carosella, LCDC, holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. He is currently serving as an Outpatient Affiliate Manager in Katy, TX, and is an adjunct faculty member at Lee College. With a diverse background in addiction treatment, Glenn has held roles as a Recovery Advocate, Director, and Inpatient Counselor, bringing a wealth of experience to his work. He recently celebrated six years in long-term recovery on September 13th. As a passionate educator, Glenn has also contributed to the field as a former educator with the University of Houston Charter School and has presented at key industry events, including the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals (TAAP) luncheon in Houston and the Houston Employee Assistance Professionals Association. He has made his second appearance on the Positive Recovery MD podcast, sharing insights from his personal and professional journey in recovery. Topics Discussed: Why you can’t “outthink” addiction (but you can change your behavior) How to navigate triggers, boredom, cravings, & distractions Finding what fulfills your sense of meaning and purpose The process behind building an intentional foundation in recovery Getting reacquainted with your inner child Identifying authenticity and uncovering who you are Connect with us on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Additional Links: Want to receive the daily Positive Intervention from Dr. Powers’ Positive Recovery Daily Guide? Transforming Struggles Into Strength: An Inspiring Story of Resilience, Redemption, and Recovery with Mitch Leff

9/17/2024
The journey from struggle to strength in recovery is one of profound transformation. What begins as a battle against darkness, uncertainty, and pain evolves into a testament to resilience, hope, and personal growth. In the midst of struggle, we often find the greatest opportunities for change—each challenge met with determination becomes a stepping stone toward a life of renewed purpose. Our guest this week shares his gripping journey from addiction to sobriety, recounting his struggles with alcohol and drugs that began in his late teenage years, from hitting rock bottom and being arrested on his high school graduation night to undergoing a mini-intervention in college to finding his path to recovery and inspiring others to transform their struggles into strengths. In 2006, one week shy of his 19th birthday, Mitch found himself in rehab for drug addiction. After spending time in rehab, halfway houses, and collegiate recovery programs, he moved to New York and made something special of his life. He started ‘Mitch Motivates’ after noticing the need for experienced, independent experts in the recovery community. He has been in recovery since 2006 when he was only 19. For over 17 years, Mitch has been a leader and expert in addiction, recovery, sobriety, and mental health. In his book, “My Addiction, My Superpower,” Mitch shares his recovery journey in detail, in which he reveals the lessons he learned and breaks them down into twelve easy tips for anyone who has been impacted by addiction, mental health, or substance abuse. Topics Discussed: Honoring yourself (and others) by putting your sobriety first The power of telling your story through positivity, honesty, and vulnerability Why recovery requires our whole-hearted attention and letting go of our ego Finding strength in overcoming failure and moving forward (resilience) Keeping your sobriety simple and consistent for long-term recovery Connect with Mitch Leff: Email: mitch@mitchmotivates.com Website: https://mitchmotivates.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mitchmotivates All Social: @MitchMotivates My Addiction, My SuperPower - Book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRVQYQ4G?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_W7QFA919DB4GEE9KJGXY&language=en-US Connect with us on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Additional Links: Want to receive FREE daily Positive InterventionS from Dr. Powers’ Positive Recovery Daily Guide? Transforming Suffering into Meaningful Service: From Addiction, to Buddhism, to Mindfulness in Recovery with John Bruna

9/3/2024
Whether through small gestures or grand efforts, the act of helping others creates a ripple effect that can lead to profound and lasting change. Our guest this week has one clear mission for his life: to be helpful to others. John Bruna, M.Ed., is the Co-Founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute. He is an author, educator, counselor, and mindfulness trainer. In addition to successful careers in counseling and education, John is a former Buddhist monk with over three decades of experience working in recovery. John has presented at TEDx, Google, Facebook, and conferences throughout the United States. In this inspiring journey, John shares how the worst day of his life - losing access to his daughter due to his substance use addiction - led him down a life-long journey of self-discovery, discipline, and mindfulness. Because of the internal work - learning how to have a healthy relationship with himself and finding peace in recovery - he got his daughter back years later and became the father (and grandfather!) figure he always wanted to be. Now, celebrating 40 years in recovery, John equips others with the tools to nurture new, positive thoughts, teaches them how to support the person they want to become, and helps them overcome negativity bias and remove suffering from their lives through mindfulness. Topics Discussed: Learning how to have a healthy relationship with yourself first Becoming a Buddhist Monk and working alongside the Dalai lama The difference between compassion and empathy How compassion allows us to reduce long-term suffering Recognizing every encounter as an opportunity for growth How mindfulness can lead to a meaningful life Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute https://www.mindfulnessinrecovery.com/mirinstitute/ Connect with us on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Additional Links: Want to receive the daily Positive Intervention from Dr. Powers’ Positive Recovery Daily Guide? What You Should Know About Overdose

8/20/2024
Education is one of our most powerful tools, especially as we approach International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31st. In this episode, Dr. Jason Powers highlights the critical role that ongoing education plays in overdose prevention and recovery. He addresses the misconceptions and stigmas that often prevent people from seeking help or fully grasping the severity of an overdose. With this knowledge, we empower individuals to act swiftly in emergencies. Dr. Powers also emphasizes that education goes beyond just recognizing the immediate signs and symptoms of overdose—it involves understanding the complexities of what happens during an overdose and the importance of a critical response. Tools like Narcan (naloxone) are invaluable in reversing opioid overdoses, but it's essential to be aware of both their benefits and limitations, including the potential for withdrawal symptoms after use. Having the right tools, support, and understanding of substance use disorders and overdose, no matter the substance, can help individuals find the proper treatment and start their journey toward a healthier, substance-free life. By spreading accurate information, we can break down barriers and promote a more compassionate approach to overdose and recovery. Topics Discussed: Understanding what happens during an overdose Dispelling myths and misinformation behind overdose Pros and cons of Narcan and substance withdrawal The importance of continued recovery education Connect with us on Social! Recovery Advocacy: Taking Action That Matters with Sherri Layton

8/6/2024
It seems like every family has been affected by substance abuse in some capacity. For many of us, it's a parent, spouse, child, or even a friend who has suffered from drug or alcohol addiction. Seeing firsthand the effects of addiction, though, often encourages us to help our loved ones be a guiding light for those lost in the darkness of addiction. Recovery advocacy is about being the voice for those who can't speak for themselves. And this is precisely what led our guests to dedicate a lifetime to fighting for the policies that ensure everyone has access to the proper treatment they need. Sherri Layton, LCDC, CCS, AADC, began working in addiction treatment in 1977. Sherri didn't initially set out to pursue recovery advocacy as her lifetime passion. But when she landed her summer job at the Houston International Hospital working on the drugs and alcohol substance unit, she instantly knew she wanted to make a difference in people's lives. In 1992, Sherri began working for La Hacienda Treatment Center. Now, she is semi-retired, acting as the coordinator for La Hacienda's advocacy efforts, and is a powerhouse regarding recovery advice. She serves both statewide and nationally as Director of Public Policy and is Co-Chair of NAADAC's Public Policy Committee. She also serves on NAATP's Public Policy Committee and is on the Board of Directors for Texas' Association of Substance Abuse Programs. In this conversation, Sherri and George Joseph discuss the importance of advocacy in addiction recovery, including the impact of laws like the federal parity law, the value of building relationships with legislators, and bridging the gap for new advocates and counselors. They both offer actionable insights for those interested in becoming addiction counselors or getting involved in advocacy, ultimately aiming to inspire more professionals to join and support the cause. Topics Discussed: Encouraging individuals to become recovery advocates and LCDCs Navigating the challenges and gaps in our medical system Current Issues and Legislative Efforts for Recovery Advocacy Why relationships matter in helping individuals seek treatment Ways to help restore families from the disease of addiction Connect with us on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Additional Links: Want to receive the daily Positive Intervention from Dr. Powers’ Positive Recovery Daily Guide? QUICK TIPS for Life After Recovery Treatment

7/24/2024
Your past can be one of your greatest teachers. In fact, the best way to make progress is to know your starting point. For those in recovery, understanding where you come from, be it the experiences you've endured or the mistakes you may have made, plays a major role in your healing journey. Acceptance of the past is the key to unlocking freedom in recovery. Once you've embraced your past, you're ready to take the next step toward healing and freedom. This newfound freedom allows you to shape a new life for yourself. But what does life look like after recovery treatment? In this episode, Host Dr. Jason Powers answers your questions about returning to "normal" life and offers a few quick tips for life after recovery treatment. One of the most important things is leaning into what works best for you. While many of us share similar experiences, your healing journey is specific to you. Not every aspect of recovery may speak to you, and that's okay. As Dr. Powers shares, the best way to find sobriety and continue this path of healing is to find meaning in "healthy" distractions—not ones that turn away from challenges but ways to help you grow despite them. Whether it's journaling, meditation, gratitude practices, gardening, learning to play a new instrument, baking, or a variety of new skills and hobbies, finding what sparks joy and healing into your life is one of the greatest rewards from sobriety! Topics Discussed: The biggest challenges individuals face after completing treatment How to know you have “recovered” from substance use Learning to live on your own after addiction treatment Why accepting your past allows you to take claim of your future The journey of always becoming better than yesterday Connect with us on Social! Normalizing the Conversation of Men’s Mental Health With Alex Palmer

6/4/2024
In today's fast-paced world entire of instant gratification, men often find themselves caught in the relentless pursuit of chasing short-term pleasures, from alcohol and drugs to unhealthy relationships and risky behaviors. While society sells the notion that these quick fixes will bring happiness and fulfillment, these fleeting moments of satisfaction can quickly spiral into a cycle of dependency and self-destruction, masking deeper mental health issues that remain unaddressed. But what if there was a way to break free from this cycle and pave the way for long-term recovery and genuine happiness? Our guest this week, Alex Palmer, joins Dr. Powers as they normalize the conversation of men's mental health. Alex leads marketing and business development for Positive Recovery and is a passionate advocate for men's mental health. He hosts the Fellowman Podcast and is working his way through grad school to eventually become a therapist working with men experiencing similar mental health challenges to those he's worked through. In this conversation, Alex and Dr. Powers explore the principles of the 12-step program and how they can be transformative tools for managing anxiety and depression. They also discuss why men have difficulty showing their emotions and how to create a liberating environment for men to feel safe enough to be vulnerable with one another.
