581 - Brian's video with Rick Beato, Exploding tubes, and the BOSS PX-1

9/5/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 581 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Brian's video with Rick Beato, Exploding tubes, and the BOSS PX-1 Richard is feverish with excitement about the new Rick Beato interview with David Gilmour whereas Brian and Blake are almost completely nonplussed. This somehow becomes a discussion about pork chops before the guys look at some controversial comments from another ex-member of Pink Floyd. Boss have released a new pedal, the PX-1, which is a 'plugin loader' pedal and the guys look into it and have some interesting views about why the Internet shouldn't be as mad as they are. Brian thinks it looks a bit like a LEGO pedal - but that may not be such a bad thing. Do you still use a Wah pedal? Brian sets forth the motion that nobody does any more. Brian also managed to nearly set fire to his barn when one of his amps went supernova and he tell us all about it. Richard has a new pedal day with a vintage classic and the guys nerd out about op-amps. Finally Blake is allowed to talk about his new amp day and there is much rejoicing. Celtic mixups, Wampler hyperbole, AARP, Bob and the Cohorts, Voltage lies, Josh based correction...it’s all in this week’s Chasing Tone! 580 - The greatest guitar gear deal ever and is Brian working with the military?

8/27/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 580 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - The greatest guitar gear deal ever and is Brian working with the military? Blake is cursing at his air conditioning and Richard is wearing heavy metal t-shirts while Brian is in an indeterminate state of undress. Yes, it is business as normal here at Chasing Tone. Brian has an idea for an amp and the fellers may just be on to something. Richard takes us through the un-boxing of his new drum Kit having completely forgotten he talked about elements of this last week because he is both old and an idiot but he has had an epiphany. What is the perfect ratio of amplifiers to guitars? Richard finds himself unusually short. Someone made a mistake and accidentally discounted a suite of plugins and the guys discuss consumer expectations and trying to get one over on the man. Somehow this involves some British folklore from the 1990s and the guys invent a dangerous new sport. Water cooled amplifiers, Hoover free flights, Quiche, Bad career advice, Vegetable wars, Eddie Vedder Tele, Subwoofer flatulence...it’s all in this week’s Chasing Tone! 8/22/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 579 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Brian's number one guitar buying tip and California dreaming with Tracii Guns and Norman's Rare Guitars Richard has been living in the 1980s and has a rant. Meanwhile there was some very tragic news in the world of metal so the guys discuss it despite Internet woes. Closer to home in the pedal industry, Josh Scott from JHS had a nasty accident on his cycle so the guys do their best to send healing powers across the airwaves. Blake spent a couple of days on the west coast and hung with almost everybody who is anybody! He tells us about his time with the legendary Norm of Norman's Rare Guitars and somehow it involves the Goo Goo Dolls. Brian shares his one tip for picking a great guitar and Blake talks about his time with friend of the show, Mr. Tracii Guns. Brian has convinced Richard to buy new gear and there is a modicum of excitement before Bri takes it all straight to the gutter. Blake realizes that he too is becoming old and the guys compare aging woes. Duck Update, Meris, Leisure Suit Larry, Richie Sambora, Rimshots...it’s all in this week’s Chasing Tone! Richard is disappointed he didn't guess the teaser riddle and is dazzled by a revelation from the past. Would you watch Ai generated gear review videos? According to a new report, 9 out of 100 of the biggest growing YouTube channels is generated entirely by Ai and the guys discuss what this means for the future of our industry. This moves on to a discussion about the future of guitar equipment. Brian makes a confession about a potential crime he committed in the past and how the police got called on him. Have you ever built your own amp? Richard mulls it over and Blake tells him about a mutual friend's DIY build. 8/6/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 577 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Introducing the Quad Fusion and why Bruce Dickinson hates your concert footage Blake has celebrated another year on planet tone and the guys celebrate by discussing the various foodstuffs he consumed. Richard has received a couple of not so mysterious pedals that he is in love with and JHS have teased a new release via the medium of Riddle which he thinks he has solved...maybe. Our intrepid Portlandian reporter is also about to interview the head honcho himself from Norman's Rare Guitars and the guys are excited. Brian has a new idea for an battery powered amplifier and the guys discuss portable amplification circuits. Richard spotted a few familiar looking pedals on Gem archer of Oasis' pedalboard and the guys dissect a low resolution image. A lot of musicians turn to acting - but what about actors who turn to music - can they cut the mustard? The guys debate this and Richard makes a shock admission. Do you film the concerts you attend? The lead singer of Iron Maiden has shared some views about this and there is some interesting chat about this subject. Blake claims Richard is a monocle wearer. 7/30/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 576 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Brian likes the taste of beer and has no idea who Tom Jones is! Brian reminisces about the olden days as he shows a worrying proclivity for certain medical procedures. Richard is older and has eaten his weight in Indian dishes and has a new guitar shaped toy. He reopens the guitar Youtube debate with an observation and the guys discuss it. Does pedal order ever confuse you? Richard is bemused by this issue and the guys weigh in with some knowledge. And some stupidity. Brian ponders whether he should start wearing nail varnish and get your beverages ready because there is David Gilmour news. Metallica are rumored to be about to announce something bug and Richard is astounded to discover a hole in Blake and Brian's musical knowledge pertaining to the king of Welsh crooners. 575 - The Prince of Darkness exits stage left and is this the end of JHS?

7/25/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 575 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - The Prince of Darkness exits stage left and is this the end of JHS? Richard has lost 25% wisdom and is now at a deficit...he tells us tales of childhood fears and lessons learned before the business of the week is addressed. This turns into a health and weight loss section as our British compatriot has been on the Brian Wampler diet...kind of. Brian meanwhile has been creating new businesses and teases us with the details. The news that Ozzy Osbourne passed his week takes a big focus for the guys as it has affected everyone to different degrees. Richard tells a story of how his friend went drinking with Ozzy how he discovered Black Sabbath - it may involve a certain legendary pub and a small piece of paper. Yes that sort of paper. Will there ever be another Black Sabbath moment in music? We hope so. Brian has become a JCM 800 guy and has eschewed his former Fender amp roots. The UK JHS has announced they are closing - for those that aren't aware they have been one of the UK's biggest distributors of guitar related goodness for about 50 years and Richard laments their demise a little. Finally, a video came out this week from the guys at Working Class Music asking "is Guitar Youtube too white" and so the guys take a little look at this. 7/16/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are joined by Cyril Nigg from Reverb for Episode 574 as we ask - Are Reverb about to completely transform the second hand gear market...again? This week the guys are joined by the senior director of analytics from Reverb, Cyril Nigg, and they immediately go digging for the gear industry's dirty secrets. Reverb have just published their Reverb Price Index for the pedal market in 2025 and it makes fascinating reading. Cyril knows a vast amount about the market and has fantastic insights into the trends and movements that shape the gear world. Theres a potted history of Reverb and a look at what makes it unique, and this leads on to an in-depth look into the guitar and pedal market. Cyril also has some views on the rise of modeling pedals versus the classic multi-fx units of yore and the guys also look at the dynamics around a release before Cyril and Richard share some Microsynth woes. Do you think there is something magical about musical instruments from the past? It's the eternal question and as well asking Cyril to predict the future, we also look into the past. The guys are warmed to hear about some of the buying trends that follow events like the recent "Back to the Beginning" concert. There are also a bunch of insights into Reverb features that you may not know about before the guys touch on something that may change the second hand gear market forever. This is an awesome episode for anyone interested in the gear market and guitar gear in general - huge thanks to all the guys at Reverb! 573 - Is the current model for guitar gear demos completely broken?

7/9/2025
Brian and Richard are back for Episode 573 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Is the current model for guitar gear demos completely broken? Blake has disappeared into an alternate reality for a week's vacation so Brian and Richard take the reigns...you have been warned! Richard defied previous wisdom and paid for the stream for the Ozzy Osbourne retirement festival and he is very glad he did. Brian reminisces about the good ole' days and Richard has various half baked opinions about the music he witnessed. Richard got the creative urge to record some music and talks us through it and ponders about a particular feeling that he has identified. Brian reminisces about some of his early shopping experiences and goes misty eyed when Richard brings up a certain smell. Yes, you read that correctly. There is also a dubious smuggling tale. The question about guitar YouTubers and gear demos comes back up and the guys talk about how the landscape has changed for content creators. Brian offers some invaluable information and Richard is an idiot so business as normal. They do however both agree on future career choices. 7/2/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 572 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - How to avoid being triggered, is there a new shift in the demographics of guitarists, and the ultimate MIDI course is here... Richard educates the guys on the recent Glastonbury festival and some of the controversy that surrounded a certain act - and he has also got some observations on the music too which made him very happy. He also apologizes for any dog squeaker noises you may hear from his enthusiastic puppy. Are we seeing a rise in a new demographic for guitar players? An article in Guitar World made the guys ponder something about the current guitar buying public and it has got the old grey matter moving a little. Brian ponders whether he should create an Only Fans site. Yes, that is what I said. Brian has finally released the Ultimate MIDI course over at GuitarPedalHorse, sorry GuitarPedalCourse.com and the guys discuss this. It is a really big deal to Richard and he is audibly excited when Brian pays him a complement. Blake tries to convince Richard to oil up and wiggle into the Black Sabbath concert and finally the guys discuss whether or not guitar YouTube is dying. 571 - Guitar pedals vs. inflation and amazing Brad Paisley facts

6/27/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 571 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Guitar pedals vs. inflation and amazing Brad Paisley facts Richard has joined the Martinsville Truckers Club thanks to another mysterious gift and tells us terrible tales of his misspent youth. The guys also look at the cost of guitar pedals versus other consumer luxury items and ponder why inflation hasn't hit them the same. Do you practice different technical aspects of picking when you practice and did you know Brad Paisley is a secret master luthier? This is amongst the random questions burning through Richard and Blake's illness addled minds. Blake also has some aviation facts to share and the guys talk about how to transport guitar gear on a plane. Pete Thorn is playing a dream gig right now with Satch and Vai and one of his guitars has caught the guys' attention. Brian played a gig and drops a massive hint about what's coming from Wampler. 6/18/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 570 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - A mysterious fuzz appears and is this the worst gig of all time? We start off with pangolin based connotations and it's honestly not going to get much more intelligent beyond this point. Brian on the other hand has gone back to his carpentry roots and is in pain as a result so perhaps he should join Blake in his new sauna. Richard saw some live music and has observations and has finally completed the Ultimate MIDI Course! The death of the legendary Brian Wilson had Richard taking a long needed deep dive into the Beach Boys and was very pleasantly surprised and somewhat blown away...Meanwhile our good friend Andy Wood was on the Rick Beato show and the guys all discuss how much they love this before a pick falls out of Richard's beard. Line 6 have just released a new modeler and the guys feign vague interest. Brian may or may not be about to play a gig in the nude and Richard has suggestions for avoiding injury and has been sent a mysterious fuzz. Brian has fallen in love with a vintage Marshall... 569 - Don't touch Mr Frost's Muff and Brian makes a huge confession

6/11/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 569 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Don't touch Mr Frost's Muff and Brian makes a huge confession Good Morning tonechasers! Brian van Winkel has aroused himself from his slumber and he is suffering from a severe case of builders' crack but has invented the successor to MTV so all is well. Do you enjoy making music? Some Ai feller thinks that the fun is not in the playing and the guys rage apoplectic at this outrageous notion. Brian tries to describe a famous cryptid and fails and the irony is observed. The rise of Ai videos has got the guys worried (again) so Richard asks the machine what Brian thinks about Pink Floyd...and he makes a huge surprise confession! Richard is sad about the death of Sly Stone and pays tribute to one of his favorite musical bandleaders of all time. Should Wampler make a new tweaked Tumnus? There was a post in the Wampler Facebook group and Richard challenges Brian with the idea. Richard has an idea for a new video series and Blake is not impressed as he repeats his explanations. He has also has visited the worst pub in the world and tells us about it. Blake is excited by the Wigan kebab. 6/4/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 568 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - In the court of the crimson Klon and everyone has a Tubescreamer, right? The band is back together as Brian returns to the recording studio and Richard has some ice cream tips for cannibals and a returning finger pain. He has a new pedal idea for a compact board and the guys tear him a new one...Meanwhile the Earthquaker story got on to the mainstream news and Blake uses a big word. Twice! There was big pedal news just before we recorded as pedal legend Bill Finnegan of Klon Centaur fame issued a legal statement via social media so the guys dig into it. This once again tuns into a new business idea that is legally questionable at best and then the guys develop the ultimate formula for podcast success. Brad Paisley had the Rick Beato treatment this week and Brian cannot hide his undying love for Brad and Vox style amps. Somehow the conversation jumps from Ai to pole dancing and there is much confusion and some hilarity. 5/29/2025
Ai Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 567 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - The great JHS Notadumble-fumble humble-bumble and is this a new golden age for guitarists? This week Brian is temporarily waylaid by "stuff" so Blake and Richard tackle the show without him for the first time since records began, although there is a very brief appearance from his Ai alter ego. Meanwhile there has been some division of opinion in the guitar community about a revelation from JHS. Meanwhile the Big F have released a new DAW that is essentially free for any guitarist and Richard is a big fan. Does this signify a new shift in focus for gear manufacturers and are we now in a new golden era for guitarists? Blake drops a hint about something for beginner guitarists coming from StringJoy and Richard wants the new Tone King Imperial MKII module from Synergy. Valeton have released a very interesting mini multi fx pedal and IR loader and its so inexpensive Richard feels compels to buy one. Meanwhile Blake has received and email about NAMM Next and breaks down the implications. We also pay tribute to Jim Irsay, billionaire guitar collector extraordinaire, who sadly recently passed. 5/21/2025
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 566 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - A once-in-a-lifetime experience on a tour bus and do you like gigantic pedalboards? Blake and Brian have some band name suggestions whereas Richard is struggling for ideas and he has questions about audio plugins for Brian. Meanwhile American names have confused Richard. Brian has had a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the uber talented Zach Top. Richard fanboys about a famous drummer and the guys don't believe his name. Julie from EarthQuaker Devices has been instrumental in bringing the plight of the American musical instrument manufacturing sector into focus. Brian and Blake dig deep into why it's important to listen to what she has to say and work through the repercussions. Richard rants about why you should support smaller builders and Brian wants to crowdfund an industrial adventure. Richard has had his musical ego stroked and tells us all about it before figuring out why he was too loud for everyone except himself. 562 - Chasing Tone Rewound - Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters!

4/23/2025
Every now and then we like to Rewind to one of our favorite episodes, normally when one of us is too ill to record or has gone on vacation. At least one of those things has happened this week so we bring you one of our all time favorite episodes... Brian, Blake, and Richard were joined by a special guest for this episode of Chasing Tone Rewound - Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters... We have an extra special guest this week and Brian may or may not fanboy a little bit. It is of course Chris Shiflett who is a monster player with a huge back catalogue of work - including playing in one of Brian's favorite bands, the Foo Fighters. Chris has some very cool new music coming out and also has his own podcast, Walking The Floor, and we talk about some of his escapades including a rare first hand peek into international tour bus life. Chris is a super nice dude, and his stories are absolutely fascinating. The guys talk about how Blake first discovered his music. They also go deep into Chris' love of classic rock and roll, and country music, and the influences that drove him to explore country based rock further. The guys then go right back to Chris' roots and his teenage years and find out all about his earliest tastes and influences and his signature Fender guitar. Conversation turns to his different rigs and then pedals...Brian may have found his new happy place amongst all this Foo tinged pedal talk. Chris has an idea for a custom delay pedal, and gives the guys an entertaining demonstration, and it just so happens Brian knows a guy. As well as being a fantastic player and all round legend, Chris loves football, sorry "soccer", and Richard and he share a love for the same football team so speak in what Blake and Brian can only describe as a completely foreign language. Brian's head spins, and he has fallen in love with one of Chris' solo songs "Born & Raised" so plays a little clip which instantly wins Blake over too. Right at the end Chris gives us some absolute golden insights into his songwriting process which is worth the admission fee itself. This is a special episode and the team hope you enjoy it and would like to say a huge thanks to Chris for coming on - go check out his new music! There may be a swear or two in this but heck - that's rock and roll baby! Van Life, Thierry Henry, The Stone Roses, Glaser mods, Panning Tremelo, Custom Chris Shiflett Delay pedal, Mopey minor keys...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! Check out Chris Shiflett's music here and his Podcast Here and look for him on TikTok, kids! We are on Patreon now too!
