Listen. Share. Take Action. The Vermont legislature is in the midst of debating and deciding the fate of Senate Bill 258 (S. 258). Through a well refined political strategy there is a coalition of anti-hunting interests who want to over-turn a proven and successful regulatory framework. S258 would strip rule-making capacity away from the Advisory Board, and give it to a Dept. which is headed up by political appointees. When there's a difference of opinion between the Advisory Board and the Dept., it would be reviewed by the legislature (more politics). Additionally, this legislation strips away the right to use hounds in pursuit of coyote, and eliminates baiting for coyote. There is nothing of value in this legislation, and where it has ambiguity you would be right to distrust the source and future outcomes. The anti-hunting industry is committed to upending the most effective regulatory systems in the US, where wildlife and ecosystems have thrived, and hunting opportunity has been prioritized. Non-hunters have benefitted from these systems, because we all want wildlife to succeed on the landscape. The anti-hunters are focused on stripping away human participation in nature - to the detriment of all stakeholders, including wildlife. Even as the Covid-19 outbreak drove more people into America's forests, waterways, and shooting ranges, the support for hunting, fishing, trapping, and recreational shooting has declined over the past three years, according to a recent poll of Americans' sentiments toward these activities. After almost 30 years of rising public support, there has been a decline in support for legal field sports. This decline may be due to a broader and growing distaste for activities that are mostly associated with older, white, rural men. Or It may mean we are not doing a good enough job speaking to the non-hunting public . Responsive Management conducted a poll titled "Americans' Attitudes Toward Legal, Regulated Fishing, Target/Sport Shooting, Hunting, and Trapping," which was published June of 2023. The Outdoor Stewards of Conservation Foundation, a think tank that focuses on disseminating information on outdoor trends procure a grant to get this study done.
