Checking in on spring football, hoops roster rebuild (Episode 250)

4/17/2026
Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter! Episodes direct to your inbox, plus other written musings from Jeff. podcastvseveryone.com We're about two thirds of the way through Kirby Moore's first set of spring football practices, and while there isn't a lot of video out there for us to judge with our own eyes, there are plenty of first hand reports thanks to increased media access this year. It doesn't seem like the offense has been lighting it up. But that's ok, we think? We also talk about running back Kirby Vorhees' eye-popping statement: "It's the best defense I've been a part of." Then, we move on to David Riley's remake of the basketball team after almost the entire roster hit the portal. There's one new guy in particular who we're damn excited about: Division 2 transfer Lazerek Houston. We also take a brief look at the other four players who have committed and try to draw some conclusions about how Riley is trying to rebuild in a program that doesn't have a ton of resources. Plus (of course) beer talk. Notes Podcast music by Randy England. You can find more of his work on Instagram. It's Sweet 16 time! Plus, spring football (Episode 249)

3/26/2026
Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter! Episodes direct to your inbox, plus other written musings from Jeff. podcastvseveryone.com The first weekend of the NCAA Tournament is in the books, and there weren't all that many upsets -- the Sweet 16 is looking pretty chalky. Sure, Texas is an 11 seed, but ... it's Texas, probably the most resource rich athletics department in the country. In fact, every member of the Sweet 16 comes from the top 5 conferences (football's Power 4 + Big East). It made for a bit of a boring first couple of rounds, but with the best teams in the country now lined up, the Sweet 16 and beyond should be fantastic. Why did it happen that way? And what does all this separation of the top teams mean for WSU? After discussing that, we took a brief glimpse at spring football, which starts on Thursday for the Cougs under new coach Kirby Moore. Plus, beer talk and a brief look at the baseball team. Notes Podcast music by Randy England. You can find more of his work on Instagram. David Riley won't be fired. But he should be. (Episode 248)

3/13/2026
Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter! Episodes direct to your inbox, plus other written musings from Jeff. podcastvseveryone.com The basketball seasons are finally over, and we learned this week that David Riley will be back for at least one more year as head coach of the men's basketball team. Needless to say, based on the show title ... we're not thrilled. There are a lot of reasons to believe things aren't likely to get better under Riley going forward, and the idea that he just doesn't have enough resources is honestly insulting. Resources aren't why the team blew so many games. We break down all the reasons why Riley shouldn't be coaching the team next year before evaluating what his return probably means going forward. Plus, beer talk and a brief look at women's basketball's performance in the WCC tournament, where they advanced farther than the men -- despite starting the tournament a whole round earlier. WCC tournament preview! (Episode 247)

3/5/2026
Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter! Episodes direct to your inbox, plus other written musings from Jeff. podcastvseveryone.com The WCC regular season has concluded, and the Cougs now know their postseason fate: After dropping the final two games of the season in uninspiring fashion -- making it six losses in seven games -- WSU finished 8th. That means they'll receive a "bye" into the second round of the WCC's long, funky tournament bracket, and they'll need five wins in five days to secure the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Crazier things have happened? At the very least, there remains an opportunity to win two, or even three, games, given the conference's mediocrity outside the top three teams. Most of our conversation, though, revolves around David Riley's job security -- and more specifically, how and why the Cougs keep failing in the same kinds of ways. Plus, beer talk and a brief look at women's basketball's draw in their WCC tournament, which is even worse than the men's! Notes Podcast music by Randy England. WSU football 2026 schedule REVEALED! (Episode 246)

2/17/2026
Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter! Episodes direct to your inbox, plus other written musings from Jeff. podcastvseveryone.com It took a while, but the new-look Pac-12 finally released its football schedules for the upcoming 2026 season. While we already knew WSU's first four games -- every September contest is out of conference and has been set for a while -- the rest of the schedule finally came into focus. Let's break it down. After that, we checked in on men's hoops following their no-show at Gonzaga, which resulted in a 30-point loss at The Kennel. The defense continues to be atrocious, undermining all the gains made on the offensive end. Plus: What we're drinking, and some thoughts on women's basketball, which continues to struggle even more than the men. Notes Podcast music by Randy England. It's Gonzaga week for WSU! (Episode 245)

1/14/2026
Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter! Episodes direct to your inbox, plus other written musings from Jeff. podcastvseveryone.com WSU men's basketball has been on the upswing for a couple of weeks, and a relatively narrow loss to Saint Mary's on Saturday supports the idea that the team has made real progress. But now the Cougs face their biggest test of the season: A home game against Gonzaga on Thursday. What will it take to beat the Bulldogs, who are a top 10 team? They're very good at a lot of things, but not everything. We go over the formula for a WSU upset. After that, we revisited the work that football is doing this offseason under new coach Kirby Moore. Of note in the last week: Getting a commit from Washington state 4A high school player of the year Lance McGee, who flipped from Oregon State. WSU football is doing WORK with NIL in the portal (Episode 244)

1/7/2026
Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter! Episodes direct to your inbox, plus other written musings from Jeff. podcastvseveryone.com Out of the depths of despair comes great joy: The Cougars have a new coach, Kirby Moore, and he's doing serious work already. A lot of the roster is staying -- especially on the offensive side -- and he's adding reinforcements already, including a QB from UC-Davis that lit up FCS and a former 4-star burner on the outside from Florida. As if the vibes weren't already good enough, another piece of delightful news dropped just before we recorded: Washington is losing its quarterback to the portal. Very sad! After that, we talked men's basketball, which is also trending upward after seeming to figure some things out offensively. Women's basketball, unfortunately, is not trending that direction. Breaking down WSU's football coach search (Episode 243)

12/11/2025
Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter! Episodes direct to your inbox, plus other written musings from Jeff. podcastvseveryone.com Well ... here we are again. Jimmy Rogers is now the coach at Iowa State after just one season at WSU, and the Cougars are again searching for a someone to lead the football program, just 11 months after doing it the last time. We're pretty mad at Rogers for leaving the way he did, and concerned for what it means going forward. Yet, we press on, discussing some of the names that intrigue us as replacements. Plus, we talk men's and women's basketball -- both of which remain dreadful -- trying to figure out what the path is for each to improve, before looking at soccer's new coach, who comes to us from Montana. 12/4/2025
Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter! Episodes direct to your inbox, plus other written musings from Jeff. podcastvseveryone.com The Cougars are headed to a bowl game after beating Oregon State, and we are beyond thrilled -- it represents a significant milestone in Jimmy Rogers first season that certainly wasn't a foregone conclusion. We talk about that accomplishment, plus how the recruits who were added on Wednesday will fit into the long-term picture at WSU. Meanwhile, the men's and women's basketball teams are struggling. We dig into what's going on there before turning our attention to the change in soccer coach in Pullman. Todd Shulenberger's departure is a bit of a stunner! Plus: what we're drinking.. 10/9/2025
Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter! Episodes direct to your inbox, plus other written musings from Jeff. podcastvseveryone.com The bye week has come and gone, and now the WSU Cougars steel themselves for what is the toughest non-Pac-12 test in 20 years: A trip to Oxford, Mississippi, to take on No. 4 Ole Miss. The oddsmakers expect it to get ugly, and honestly? We do too ... although we wouldn't be surprised Lane Kiffin's crew was still basking in the glory of a win over LSU and looking ahead to next week's game against Georgia. Is it enough for the Cougs to make a game out of it? Plus: Thoughts on OSU's seemingly disastrous NIL partnership, what we're drinking, soccer, volleyball, and cross country. FREE BASKETBALL!! (Episode 234)

3/18/2025
Both of WSU's basketball teams got bounced out of their WCC tournaments over a week ago, but their seasons aren't yet over as both teams have found postseason tournaments in which to play: The men will play in the College Basketball Crown, a 16-team tournament in Las Vegas at the end of the month, while the women will take part in the WNIT starting next week. WCC tournament previews (Episode 233)

3/5/2025
The WCC tournaments are this weekend, and they mean different things for WSU's men's and women's basketball teams. For the men, it's one last chance to put the bad taste of that no good, awful five-week stretch that tanked all the vibes around a good start. They played pretty decently in their final two games of the regular season, securing the WCC's No. 6 seed. And with the way the tournament is set up, they could win a game -- or two. For the women, it's entirely different: They have a legitimate shot to win the whole thing. That would mean winning another showdown with Portland, but there are reasons to think that could break the Cougs' way in a third matchup. Is it time to start talking about David Riley's job? (Episode 232)

2/27/2025
It was truly a weekend of pain for WSU men’s basketball. In one of the most anticipated games in Beasley Coliseum in years, the Washington State Cougars laid an absolute dud against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in front of a sold-out crowd, losing by 21 last Wednesday. Not to be outdone — and proving there is actually no floor — they then went out to Beasley again on Saturday and turned in an even worse performance against Santa Clara, losing by 30. Getting outscored by 51 on your home floor in consecutive games doesn’t leave podcasters a whole lot to talk about. And frankly, it’s the kind of stuff that gets coaches fired. Sooooo ……. Should we start having a conversation about David Riley? Even though he’s not even done with his first season? That’s where we kick off the show this week. Other topics: Galaxy PilsnerFootball: Spring practices are actually pretty close! Let’s talk about the offensive line, where two guys return and the rest of the spots are up for grabs. Gonzaga finally returns to Pullman. How do the Cougs beat them? (Episode 231)

2/19/2025
WSU has had a rough go of it lately in men's basketball, having dropped six of seven. But now ... big, bad, Gonzaga makes its return to Beasley Coliseum on Wednesday. With special co-host Jamey Vinnick of Cougfan.com, we start off by looking at just how it is that this season went off the rails, then break down what it will take to beat the Zags. It might not be as complicated as people assume. Other topics: Beer, football recruiting (can WSU succeed with all these South Dakota State kids?), and women's basketball (the Cougs are in great position for a run in the WCC tournament).
