Hunting Survival, Colorado Wolf Debate, & Global Travel Tax Hikes: Key Updates

9/7/2024
Episode 201 Details Hunting Survival, Colorado Wolf Debate, & Global Travel Fee Hikes: Key Updates Latest News: Hunting, Outdoors, Travel & Western Living ALASKA: HUNTER SURVIVES BEAR ATTACK & GUNSHOT WOUND Tyler Johnson, a 32-year-old hunter from Sterling, Alaska, survived a brutal brown bear attack and a self-inflicted gunshot wound while hunting on the Kenai Peninsula. Johnson was hunting black bears with his father, Chris, a former US Federal Wildlife Service officer, when they accidentally startled a sleeping brown bear in the dense grass. The bear charged Tyler, who struggled to draw his sidearm before being knocked down. Despite sustaining severe injuries from the bear's claws and a gunshot wound to his leg, Tyler managed to fire seven rounds into the brown bear, eventually incapacitating the animal. His father, Chris, helped finish off the bear and immediately began treating Tyler's injuries which included an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to Tyler’s leg. Tyler Johnson always carries a trauma kit hunting that has QuikClot and a slingshot band which the men used on the gunshot wound. The two men worked quickly, applying a tourniquet and calling for help using a Garmin InReach. It took search and rescue over an hour to get to the hunters, Chris made his son tell him hunting stories in order to help keep him awake and mind off the pain. Tyler was airlifted to Alaska Medical Center, treated, and released the same evening. This incident marks the third bear attack in the U.S. this year. Essentials: Hunting & Hiking Trauma Kit Before hitting the trails during hunting season or out for a fall hike; carrying a trauma kit is absolutely necessary. The backcountry is treacherous, and must be taken seriously. First rule - Always notify someone of your hunting, hiking or camping plans, destination, and time expected to be gone. Second rule - Always fully understand how to use any of the items in your trauma kit. The field is for reaction, home is for learning, understanding and practice. Trauma Kit Must Haves QuikClot Garmin InReachAtlasTrax Reference: https://www.outdoorlife.com/survival/kenai-brown-bear-attack/ https://quikclot.com/ https://www.garmin.com/en-US/c/outdoor-recreation/satellite-communicators/ https://usa.atlastrax.com/ Impact of Wolf Relocation on Colorado’s Livestock Industry Colorado's plan to relocate the Copper Creek wolf pack, responsible for most livestock depredations in the state, has sparked controversy among ranchers. The pack, introduced from Oregon, has been linked to the deaths of cattle and sheep in Grand County, Colorado. Despite repeated requests from ranchers for lethal removal, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) opted for relocation, stating that this decision does not set a precedent for future wolf-livestock conflicts. The relocation decision aims to balance the state’s wolf restoration goals with the needs of affected ranchers. This action follows the denial of permits for lethal control, despite rising livestock losses. The Cattlemen’s Association criticized CPW for prioritizing wolves over ranchers' rights, highlighting the significant impact of the wolves on local livestock. The agency's strategy faces scrutiny as it walks a fine line between wolf conservation and livestock protection, with the future location of the relocated wolves still uncertain. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger’ Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 200 Details College Bass Fishing's Rise, Teen-Invented Wildlife AI Dashcam & Best Fall Foliage in New England Latest Outdoors & Travel News! SPORTS: RISE OF COLLEGE BASS FISHING College bass fishing has emerged as a significant pathway to professional angling, with top university programs like Bethel University in Tennessee setting the standard. The 2024 Bassmaster College Series, a key event in college fishing, has seen a surge in participation, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport. As college fishing remains a club sport, meaning it is not NCAA-recognized, it opens the doors for students to earn sponsorships and win prize money, making it an attractive option for aspiring professional anglers. Universities like Bethel have pioneered the sport, offering scholarships, full-time coaches, and extensive financial support, which have helped them dominate national rankings. As more schools follow suit, college bass fishing is becoming a significant recruiting tool, drawing in both male and female students from across the U.S. and even internationally. This rise in interest and investment is cementing college bass fishing's place as a key feeder system for professional bass fishing, shaping the future of the sport. The sport's expansion beyond the Southeastern U.S. and into new regions is further fueled by the involvement of Major League Fishing, broadening opportunities for students nationwide. TEENS INVENT THERMAL AI DASHCAM A group of all female high school students from STEM School Highlands Ranch in Denver has developed a groundbreaking AI-powered dashcam designed to prevent wildlife collisions on roads. Using a Flir thermal imager and an AI model, the device detects animals, particularly deer, on roadways before they are visible to drivers, providing crucial warnings that can prevent accidents. The project began as part of the 2024 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, driven by the students’ desire to address the frequent and costly wildlife-vehicle collisions in Colorado. After exploring various solutions, young women chose thermal imaging for its effectiveness in low-light conditions, when most accidents occur. Their invention, currently in the final prototype phase, aims to alert drivers of potential collisions up to 500 feet ahead, significantly improving reaction times compared to traditional headlights. Despite not winning the national competition, the students remain committed to refining and testing their device. Their innovative approach has the potential to save lives and reduce the financial impact of wildlife collisions across the country. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger’ Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 199 Details Epic Struggle: Kayak Angler’s 11-Mile Battle and Poacher's 24-Year Hunting Ban Latest News: Outdoors & Western Living Marlin Tows Across Ocean Kayak Angler Listen to this story - How far would you go?? In early August, California fisherman Kei Vang embarked on a fishing trip with two friends, targeting tuna off the coast of California. They were about six miles out when Vang hooked a massive striped marlin, leading to a dramatic five-hour battle. The marlin towed Vang's 12-foot kayak approximately 11 miles over 5 hours time across the Pacific Ocean before the striped marlin began to tire, beginning to circle underneath the kayak. It was then the angler was able to grab the leader and finally able to get a good look at the billfish which was longer than his kayak, having him believe it to be 13 feet long and estimated to weigh around 200 pounds. He then managed to cut the line and release the fish. An Epic Struggle! Vang and his friends had to use GPS units mounted on their kayaks to map the distance the striped marlin had taken them, which totaled about 20 miles from shore. They were carrying extra batteries along with VHF radios and other safety gear. As night fell, realizing it would take hours to paddle back, they called a friend with a power boat who rescued them and towed their kayaks back. Vang said every kayak angler’s dream is to catch a big fish and have a photo made of it holding it up next to their kayak… That wasn’t possible with his Striped Marlin, who didn't get a photo with the marlin, considered having a replica mount made instead. FACEBOOK AIDES IN CATCHING POACHER In December 2023, photos of a famous nontypical Virginia buck, known as the "Hollywood Buck," posted on Facebook led to accusations against Virginia resident Jason Walters for poaching. Walters, who initially claimed to have killed the deer in Prince Edward County, was identified as having illegally hunted the buck and two other whitetails from Richmond, Virginia. Following a thorough investigation by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), Walters pled guilty to 20 wildlife violations. He was sentenced to six months in jail (with three months suspended), fined $2,500, and ordered to pay $11,000 in restitution. His hunting privileges were revoked for 100 years, but with 76 years suspended, leaving an effective ban of 24 years. Walters' accomplice was also found guilty and received a $1,250 fine, 30 days of house arrest, and a six-year suspension of his hunting privileges. The DWR emphasized that these penalties are among the harshest ever imposed and aim to deter future wildlife crimes. Investigations revealed that Walters had previously posted photos of the Hollywood Buck and other deer on Facebook, which were linked to the poaching incident. This case highlights the critical role of social media in wildlife law enforcement. Wildlife Safety: Bear Attack, Instagram Filter Plus Wildfire, Sunscreen & Insect Repellent Tips

8/17/2024
Bear Beware! Montana officials have euthanized a bear after it attacked a child at a campground. A new social media Instagram filter, "Selfie Control", helps tourists maintain safe distances from wildlife. Plus, wildfire updates and tips on the shelf life of sunscreen and insect repellent. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger’ Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 198 Details Wildlife Safety: Bear Attack, Instagram Filter Plus Wildfire, Sunscreen & Insect Repellent Tips Bear Attacks Young Child In Tent At Private Campground Bear Beware In Montana & Other National Parks According to Outdoor Life, Officials in Montana tracked down and killed a black bear that attacked a three-year-old girl, on Sunday, August 11th, while she was sleeping in a tent at a private campground near Red Lodge. The attack occurred around 9:45 p.m. at Perry's RV Park and Campground, leading to the evacuation of the site. The bear was trapped and euthanized by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (MFWP) officials, who believe it was the same bear involved in the incident. The girl was taken to a hospital in Billings, but her condition remains undisclosed. MFWP's Facebook post noted that "unsecured attractants" like garbage and human food likely lured the bear into the campsite. The campground remains closed as officials continue to monitor the area for any other bears Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks emphasizes being “Bear Aware” when camping or recreating in bear country, especially at established campgrounds where large concentrations of people can attract opportunistic bears. In its guide to camping in bear country, MFWP points out that most conflicts between humans and black bears at campsites involve food-conditioned bears. In a statement, MFWP said, “A food-laden campsite can be a bear’s death sentence. After trying scare tactics and multiple relocations, FWP wardens and biologists have to kill 10 to 12 bears each year when the animals, attracted by food, repeatedly raid campsites and put human safety at risk.” Reference: https://www.outdoorlife.com/survival/montana-black-bear-attacks-girl/ https://fwp.mt.gov/homepage/news/2024/aug/08132024_child-hospitalized-in-black-bear-attack-south-of-red-lodge https://fwp.mt.gov/binaries/content/assets/fwp/activities/bearproofcamping.pdf NEW Social Media Instagram Wildlife Filter: Safety First! Tourists and Wildlife Do Not Mix, Selfie Filter Provides Safety The Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board has launched the "Selfie Control" Instagram filter, designed to help tourists maintain safe distances from wildlife while taking photos. Preloaded with safe viewing distances for iconic species like bears, bison, and moose, the filter helps users determine if they are too close to the animals. If the animal appears larger on the screen than the icon, users are in the danger zone and should back up. This tool addresses the challenge of accurately estimating safe distances, as recommended by the National Park Service, which advises keeping at least 25 yards from wildlife and 100 yards from predators like bears. The filter aims to prevent dangerous encounters, especially with "tourons" who often disregard safety, leading to incidents such as bison-related injuries in Yellowstone. By making it easier to gauge safe distances, the filter is expected to enhance visitor safety and protect wildlife during the busy summer season. OUTDOORS & WESTERN LIFESTYLE NEWS HEADLINES Feral Hog Spread Invasive Plants Hawaii faces significant ecological challenges due to feral hogs, which are not only disrupting native ecosystems but also promoting the spread of invasive plants. Research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison shows that areas with higher densities of feral pigs have increased nonnative plant growth, as the pigs' rooting behavior disturbs the soil and favors fast-growing invasive species. This disruption is particularly problematic in Hawaii, whose ecosystems did not evolve with large ungulates like feral hogs. Consequently, the state's fragile ecosystem struggles to recover, making it uniquely vulnerable compared to mainland states. Despite efforts, managing the feral hog population remains difficult due to their high reproductive rates. Big-Game Mountain Lion Outfitter: Sentenced Prison Time and Fined According to Outdoor Life, Wade Lemon, a Utah big-game outfitter, was sentenced to two months in prison and fined $10,500 for orchestrating illegal "canned" mountain lion hunts on public lands in 2020 and 2021. Lemon's hunts involved mountain lions being treed and held in place until paying hunters arrived, violating the Lacey Act. His guide, Kacey Alan Yardley, received six months probation for his role in these hunts. This isn’t Lemon’s first legal issue; he has faced multiple accusations of illegal hunting practices, including a fraudulent scheme involving Donald Trump Jr. and a black bear in 2018. Lemon has been investigated numerous times for similar wildlife violations. Setup Trail Cameras Now, Why Drink Room Temperature Water in Heat & Tips to Keep Cooler Cold Longer

7/13/2024
Episode 193 Details Setup Trail Cameras Now, Why Drink Room Temperature Water in Heat & Tips to Keep Cooler Cold Longer Why to Get Trail Cameras Setup and Where In Heat Ensure Functionality of Trail Cameras Image Retrieval Non-Cellular Trail Cameras Vs Cellular Trail Cameras Test Battery Life Check how long batteries last in different weather conditions to ensure your trail cams capture crucial footage without interruption. Evaluate Image & Video Quality Assess the clarity of images and videos to confirm your trail cams provide reliable data for scouting and planning. Trigger Speed & Recover time When selecting a trail camera, trigger speed and recovery time are critical considerations. Trigger speed denotes how quickly the camera captures an image after detecting motion. Cameras with faster trigger speeds, typically half a second or less in high-end models, excel at capturing clear images of swiftly moving deer. However, areas like food plots, where deer linger, can still benefit from cameras with slower trigger speeds. Recovery time, on the other hand, measures the camera's ability to capture subsequent images. This interval can vary based on camera settings and affects how quickly the camera can take a new photo after the initial capture. Short recovery times are ideal for locations where deer travel in groups, ensuring no moment is missed, whereas longer recovery times suit areas like food plots, where single captures suffice. Understanding these features helps optimize trail camera selection for effective wildlife monitoring. Flash Type When selecting a trail camera, another crucial feature to consider is its flash type, which significantly impacts image quality and camera visibility during picture-taking. 5/11/2024
Discover expert tips on rattlesnake safety & bite prevention. Learn about antivenom availability & treatment protocols. Stay safe outdoors! Episode 184 Details UNDERSTANDING RATTLESNAKE BEHAVIOR & DANGER TO STAY SAFE Rattlesnakes exhibit various behaviors influenced by their habitat and surroundings. Learning about their habits can significantly reduce the risk of an encounter turning into a dangerous situation. Understanding snake behavior & habitat is crucial for staying safe. In recent years, it has been documented that not all rattlesnakes' tails rattles. This has been discovered in rattlesnakes in both South Dakota's Badlands and in California. Know your snakes before venturing outdoors! Immediate Actions In Case of a Bite In the event of a rattlesnake bite, swift action is vital. The best defense is to have a set of car keys and a designated driver on hand. Calling 911 for an ambulance or Life Flight while en route to the hospital is essential to minimize delays in treatment. Prompt medical attention is critical to counteract the venom's effects. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate symptoms, so keeping the victim calm is paramount during transit to medical facilities. Access to Antivenom & Treatment Protocol Antivenom, such as CROFAB, is available in various medical facilities across the region. Understanding the availability and administration of antivenom can significantly improve outcomes for snakebite victims. Knowing where antivenom is stocked and how to administer it can be life-saving. Hospitals can prepare the antivenom in advance, reducing treatment delays upon the victim's arrival. Educating oneself about rattlesnake behavior, proper emergency response procedures, and access to medical treatment are crucial for minimizing the risks associated with snakebites. By staying informed and prepared, individuals can navigate outdoor environments safely and confidently.
