April 22, 2026: A lot happened in just a day as Michigan State lost a guard in the portal - Divine Ugochukwu, and then they added a center - Anton Bonke. It is entirely possible that MSU’s roster is mostly set now as they head into May. Divine exits a very crowded guard position group both at the point and shooting guard. Bonke comes in from the university of Charlotte as a 7’2” 270# center originally from the small island nation of Vanuatu. Bonke last season averaged 10.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game in 25 minutes. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens at the 5 for next year at MSU. March 27, 2026: Michigan State’s season came to an end in the Sweet 16 falling to the UConn Huskies, 67-63. It began as the roughest of games for the Spartans as they failed to hit any shots and Connecticut couldn’t miss from 3 (6/7 to start). MSU found itself in a 19 point hole late in the first half. Fortunately, they buckled down and managed to cut the lead to only 8 at the half, 36-28. The second half was competitive as MSU quickly cut the UConn lead down to 1 and later in the half actually took the lead a few times. Unfortunately, at winning time UConn made the plays and the Spartans didn’t. Whether it was a free throw, or key 3 pointer, UConn made just enough of what they needed to emerge triumphant over the Spartans. So MSU finishes the season 27-8, tied for second in the Big Ten and its third Sweet 16 in 4 years. March 24, 2026: Michigan State is still dancing as they prepare to play Friday night in Tom Izzo’s 17th Sweet 16 as he has the 3 seed Spartans match up against the 2 seed UConn Huskies. For those with a good memory, the two teams already faced each other this year in Storrs, CT in an exhibition match that UConn won. Of course, UConn is only two years removed from back to back national titles. MSU will try to continue its improved play as they take on a very difficult Huskies team featuring all american forward, Alex Karaban. This Connecticut team is a little hard to judge as they are 31-5 yet perhaps they haven’t met expectations since they failed to win the regular season Big East or conference titles this year. March 21, 2026: Once again, Tom Izzo and Michigan State advance to the Sweet 16 and win the second game of the weekend. This time, a solid - but far from perfect - game over Louisville 77-69 send the Spartans to Washington, DC and two games away from another Final Four. It was a game where MSU committed a lot of turnovers and gave Louisville extra possessions to score which kept this a much closer game than it might have been. The game was only a 5 point lead for MSU at the half but they maintained a 2-3 possession lead most of the second half. It wasn’t until - while up 8 - that Jaxon Kohler was fouled, had it upgraded to a flagrant and after free throws and a 3 had the Spartans up 13 and sort of put away the game. Coen Carr probably had his best game of his career with 21 points, 10 rebounds, a block, 2 steals, and 2-4 from 3 point range. Also, Jeremy Fears had a double double with 12 points and 17 assists. March 20, 2026: Once again, Tom Izzo has put Michigan State into the second game of the weekend and has advanced to the round of 32. They will take on the 6 seed Louisville Cardinals who defeated South Florida 83-79 in a game they controlled until the last few minutes. The Cardinals are a lethal 3 point shooting team and can score points in bunches. Their tempo is incredibly fast as they look to get a shot up quickly. Strangely enough, they are in the bottom 25% of teams in D1 in transition scoring which is a huge contrast to MSU that is tops in the country in transition but much, much slower in the half court. March 19, 2026: Michigan State advanced easily to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a win over Summit League champion, North Dakota State 92-67. MSU got out to a quick double digit lead in the first half and extended it to 20 at the half, 47-27. The second half was pretty much the same as the first with the Spartans pushing out to as high as 28 points behind 65% shooting in the lane and 50% from deep. Defensively, MSU held the Bison to 24% from 3 - 11% below their average on the season. Individually, it was a very solid game from most of the Spartans but an especially good game from Carson Cooper who finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and shot over 75% from the field. March 15, 2026: We’ve finally reached the first climax of the season and a time when a lot of fans start paying attention to college basketball - the bracket reveal. By all reasonable measures, Michigan State has had a very good season. They finished the year 25-7 on the year and secured a 3 seed. Frankly, when you’ve had this many appearances you’re bound to have seen just about anything by this point. So this year, MSU finds itself as the 3 seed in the East region and will face off against North Dakota State in the first round. March 14, 2026: Michigan State opened its Big Ten Tournament run with a quarterfinal game against 6 seed UCLA and lost 88-84 behind some pretty poor defense and blistering hot shooting from the Bruins. Donovan Dent followed up his triple double performance the other night with another fantastic game scoring 23 points and adding 12 assists and 4 steals. Once again, the Spartans had some spotty perimeter defense and allowed Dent and other Bruins penetration into the paint to score or dish to wide open deep shooters. It’s a vulnerability MSU has had since the departure of Divine Ugochukwu and only time will tell if it will be their ultimate undoing sometime in the NCAA Tournament. On the bright side for Michigan State is that they emerged from the Big Ten Tournament healthy and rested and await a first round game probably as a 2 seed on Thursday or Friday. March 13, 2026: Michigan State opens up its Big Ten Tournament play starting in the quarterfinals against the UCLA Bruins. The Bruins advanced as the 6 seed by defeating Rutgers on Thursday night. The Spartans will play in the final game on Friday and if they win will play the winner of the Nebraska-Purdue game. A lot of questions about this game as we will see if MSU adjusts the playing time of Jeremy Fears to try and keep him fresh or if they play him his typical 37 minutes. March 8, 2026: Michigan State played decently in the season finale to Michigan in Ann Arbor but it wasn’t enough as the Wolverines just had too much timely shooting to beat the Spartans, 90-80. The game was largely played within one to two possessions with the half time score giving Michigan a 42-41 edge. In the second half, the Spartans pushed out to a 4 point lead but were unable to hold it with UM going on an 11-0 run and never relinquishing finishing the game with a lot of free throws and a 10 point margin. March 6, 2026: Michigan State will close out its regular season at Michigan on Sunday afternoon. The rivalry game doesn’t have as much riding on it as it did earlier in East Lansing as UM has easily locked up the Big Ten Championship and a probable 1 seed for the NCAA tournament. But as with any rivalry game, this one will probably not disappoint with intensity and meaning for these two teams. This will be MSU’s final two play of the year as they look for revenge for the 12 point home loss to the Wolverines earlier this year. It was a game that MSU started very poorly and got down by 19 to the Wolverines only to battle back to take the lead late in the second half. But then the Spartans seemed to run out of gas and succumbed to the visitors for the 12 point loss. By just about every measure, Michigan is having an historic season. They are the first team to go undefeated on the road in the regular season in 50 years. They are in line to win 19 conference games for the first time ever, and they certainly have their eyes on a national championship as their defense and offense both rank inside the top 6. March 5, 2026: This was MSU’s final home game, senior day, and this game looked eerily similar to the game played in New Jersey last month. Some differences obviously as MSU led at the half, 31-30 and blitzed out to a 19 point lead with 6 minutes left. But they had a lot of trouble with turnovers - some forced, others not so much. And Rutgers hit a lot of 3s. And the game in the second half started going the way you’d expect for MSU as they started to pull away. Jeremy Fears picked up his third foul and then got T’d up for pointing to the scoreboard to land his 4th foul. That put Denham Wojcik into extended minutes which I think he handled pretty well. His defense was passable most of the time and the offense - despite some turnovers that were not of his making - ran OK. But then things started to get weird. Izzo substituted his seniors in - Wojcik, Fort, Sanders for a triumphant end of the game kissing center court. But Rutgers, unlike UM last year, decided to disrupt the ceremony legitimately by playing the clock, hitting 3s, and pressing. They got the game down to some real game pressure but Fears hit two free throws with 2.5 seconds left to ice the game at 4 and leave Rutgers no chance to win. March 3, 2026: Michigan State finishes up its home regular season on Thursday night against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. This will be MSU’s second double play of the season and their first one in New Jersey was a doozy as the Knights took MSU to OT. Or probably more accurately put, Michigan State forced the game into overtime with a crazy second half comeback requiring a Divine Ugochukwu 3 on MSU’s last possession in regulation time. Perhaps it was a trap game with the Wolverines game up next after that road game but the Spartans find themselves in the same situation here with a season finale against Michigan on Sunday in Ann Arbor. MSU is coming off their first road sweep of the state of Indiana since 2014 and are carrying a four game winning streak into Senior Day.
