Femicide

On November 21, 1987 a 19-year-old woman went missing after driving off with her father from a local 7-Eleven. When her father returned home later asking if anyone knew where she was, her family became worried and the police were notified. But before the missing person’s report was even filed, her nude body was discovered in a large swamp area, badly disfigured with a total of 27 gunshot wounds. After suspicious behaviour from her father led to evidence of his involvement, he was charged with her murder, but claimed he had dissociative identity disorder and pled not guilty by reason of insanity. On April 11, 2016 a 51-year-old woman went missing in Royston, England. It was initially reported that she had gone to the family’s holiday home, but it was soon discovered she had never been there and an investigation ensued. Three months later, her remains were uncovered in the septic tank of her own home. Her husband was immediately charged with her murder, which led investigators to a shocking revelation that she was not his only victim. This is the story of Helen Bailey. On June 3, 2015, just three days before her 40th birthday, a 39-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend in the driveway of her home in Berlin, New Jersey in the United States. The relationship had been fraught with violence, intimidation and stalking and although a restraining order was in place, she was fearful for her life and was in the process of getting a gun permit. Her home’s security cameras caught the terrifying and tragic scene but before he could be captured, her murderer took his own life. This is the story of Carol Bowne. On May 26, 1980, an 18-year-old runaway was picked up by a state trooper in Minnesota, who viciously raped and murdered her while on duty. Her body was discovered about a week later and her remains were ultimately buried as an unidentified person. On April 18, 2016 the body of a 45-year-old mother of three was found inside a church in Midlothian, Texas in the US. A fitness professional, she was preparing for her class at 5am when an unknown assailant murdered her. The person believed to be her murderer was seen on surveillance footage walking around the church for 30 minutes prior to her attack, breaking glass and opening doors. On June 22, 2012 a young couple went to a local park at night, while out on a date. A man ambushed them and took them below an overlook, forcing them to duct tape their eyes and mouths, he sexually assaulted one of the women before shooting them both in the head and leaving them for dead. A nationwide media frenzy ensued with many believing it to be a targeted homophobic hate crime. On April, 16, 1996 a man entered a police station to report that he accidentally killed his girlfriend after an argument in the bathtub. He asserted she inhaled water and drowned, but that he tried to resuscitate her and was unsuccessful. However, when police arrived to their home in Manchester, in England, they found the 17-year-old’s body to have over 150 injuries and the most extensive trauma they had ever seen. On December 9, 1986 a 24-year-old woman was brutally raped, beaten and strangled while walking home from a friend’s house in Portsmouth, in Hampshire, in the South of England. An 18-year-old navy sailor was convicted of her murder but 16 years later DNA would exonerate him of the crime, marking the first time in UK history that occurred. Amanda Todd was just 15-years-old when she committed suicide on October 10, 2012. She had been the victim of relentless cyberbullying due to an older man taking advantage of her and convincing her to show her breasts online. That man then distributed the sexual photos of Amanda to her schoolmates, instigating the bullying that would come. She created a video and posted it to YouTube, showing flashcards that explained her story just before her death, which went viral and highlighted the growing issues of cyberbullying. On February 24, 1976 the body of a 30-year-old First Nations woman and Indigenous activist was found by the side of the road in South Dakota, in the United States. On March 6, 1983 a 21-year-old woman was brutally raped by 4 men in a bar while other patrons and bar staff looked on, with some even cheering. Her case went to trial but she was quickly portrayed as “asking for it” and her name was smeared in the media. While the men who raped her were eventually found guilty, the damage was done and the young mother left with her family to another city. On March 15, 1925 a young woman was abducted by a man that had become infatuated with her and was insistently trying to date her. She was repeatedly raped and tortured for days before she attempted suicide by poisoning herself and he finally brought her home, claiming she had been in a car accident. Believing he was untouchable as the leader of the Indiana chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, he was soon shocked to learn she was able to give a full statement before her death and he was tried and convicted of his crimes. On the morning of June 13, 1977 a camp counsellor was walking to the showers area at a Girl Scout camp in Mayes County, Oklahoma, when she stumbled upon the body of one of the campers. It was soon discovered that all three young girls who had been sharing tent #8 had been viciously murdered and left on the trail. A suspect was eventually tried for the murders and was acquitted of all charges but new DNA evidence suggests he may have been guilty all along. After she didn’t return home, her family became concerned and contacted police, as she was a Type 1 diabetic and needed insulin injections daily. Upon checking CCTV footage, the police discovered a strange man had followed her for some time as she walked home, before approaching her and eventually persuading her up to his flat.
