One evening at the Wilkinson house in Greenville, Alabama, a local hotel, 26 guests became extremely ill. An investigation determined that the biscuits had been poisoned. Joseph Pritchett, a well-respected farmer from Varnell, Georgia, was shot in the back in cold blood. His murdered William Umphrey was charged with the murder and was sentenced to death. Umphrey's was hung on September 11, 1914, at 11:00 AM. Umphrey's would be the only legal execution to date to be done in Dalton, Georgia.
