V&V Episode 134 Nikii Post(In Lieu) & The Melvins' Stoner Witch
9/26/2025
Today's special guest is Nikii Post! She is the singer and guitarist for In Lieu, from Minneapolis, who are releasing a new album on Learning Curve Records. Hooligan will be released on Oct. 24th and it is a beautifully heavy record. Nikii's vocals certainly take a center stage with her incredibly powerful raw screaming style. Just this week the band has released their second single off the album with a music video which shows them delivering the goods in studio and it's pretty impressive. you can find that here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIbGk2ILzmk
And of course you should pick up the vinyl or at least listen to the singles and tell me I'm wrong! Get that here:
https://inlieuminneapolis.bandcamp.com/album/hooligan
Album of discussion being what I imagine Melvins' fans consider a seminal one? I consider it to be one of their best. Not too much facts and stats about this album, but I was able to find some good tidbits for you and learn more about Nikii's artistic development and influence this album had on her. Dig it!

V&V Episode 133 Mark Shippy (US Maple) discusses Long Hair in Three Stages
7/17/2025
Mark Shippy is here to discuss US Maple's stunning debut album, Long Hair in Three Stages. Partially because it seemed to difficult to sum up what could have been one influential album that helped shape or inform the work that US Maple was making. But in just discussing that topic a little it becomes very evident that typical classic rock had a big hand in that, but what may have been even more crucial was a lot of soundtrack music by the likes of Michael Small and Basil Kirchin.
Second being, Long Hair has been reissued for the third time by Skingraft Records, and the first time on a colored vinyl variant. You can visit their store to pick that up here: https://usmaple.bandcamp.com/album/long-hair-in-three-stages-2

V&V Episode 132 Venus Twins & The Mars Volta's Deloused in the Comatorium
3/31/2025
What a great band Venus Twins are! If you're not familiar, they're certainly noisy but as I learn in this episode, they've had some musical training, and that shows through in a jazzy, proggy way. Kinda like this album we discuss, The Mars Volta's Deloused in the Comatorium. To be honest, this time I only touch on the album in a surface manner to be able to focus more attention to the impact this album had on these guys and more about The Twins' personal musical journey to get to where they are now, and where they're going. Pretty exciting. The last release the Twins put out was called "/\/\/\/\/"(pronounced Stitching) and it's available through ThreeOneG Records. Get it here: https://venustwins.bandcamp.com/album/pronounced-stitching-ep
And don't forget to follow them to find out when the new release and upcoming shows will be. https://linktr.ee/VenusTwins

V&V Episode 131 Thor Harris(Swans, Shearwater, Medicine Singers) & Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells
3/14/2025
If you don't think you know Thor Harris, there's a good chance he's played on one of your favorite albums. Take a look for yourself here: https://www.discogs.com/artist/343752-Thor-Harris?superFilter=Credits
This conversation really covers much of what I hoped to learn about Thor from early exposure to music, first experiences performing live, current inspirations, working through depression and of course discovering Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells and what kind of impact it had on him.
In addition to that, Thor shares with us plans for the upcoming Thor & Friends record which will be released on Joyful Noise Records. I strongly suggest you bookmark them because they tend to put out great limited runs that sellout very quickly.

And Thor has upcoming shows including The Big Ears Festival happening very soon. Details are here: https://www.songkick.com/festivals/1048-big-ears/id/42164309-big-ears-festival-2025?utm_source=11593&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=ticket-link&utm_content=3332831

V&V Episode 130 Kelly Catlin discusses Kurt Cobain: Forever in Bloom
2/27/2025
This one's a little different.
Today we're joined by Kelly Catlin, the author of the new biography, Kurt Cobain: Forever in Bloom. Different in that we usually have an artist choose an album that was influential to them and the art they make. And I do quite a bit of research and writing. But considering the topic of her book being one of my favorite artists of all time and someone I personally consider to be an influence on me, I just wanted to discuss this book with almost no writing and research. And there really was no other way. For anyone who is a fan of Kurt's and his band Nirvana, you probably have a lot of questions like, "Who is this person?" and "What gives them the authority to write this book?" or "What is this book going to say that hasn't already been said?". All valid questions and all of which I got answered here.
The long and short of it is it's a great book with a lot of new insights into who Kurt Cobain was. Kelly took on this project as a labor of love with her inspiration coming directly from a family member who also took their own life in hopes that she could honor his memory while also trying to help others who may be suffering from mental health issues. 50% of the proceeds of this book will be going to multiple charities. A full list of those charities is included in this book, but you can also go to the author's website to get them.
https://www.kellycatlinauthor.com/theorganizations
And get the book here: https://geniusbookpublishing.com/collections/genius-music-books/products/kurt-cobain-forever-in-bloom-paperback?variant=50047253184791
Speaking of charities, Kelly is hosting her book launch at Factory Records in Dover, NJ on March 23rd. 100% of the proceeds from this event will be going to Ginnie's House Children's Advocacy Center. You can find details and tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/kelly-catlin-kurt-cobain-forever-in-bloom-release-event-tickets-1234798468459

V&V Episode 129 Micah Schnabel(Two Cow Garage) & Tom Waits' Nighthawks at the Diner
2/10/2025
This is a very candid interview with who I consider a friend. Micah has long been a troubadour and a road dog since the early 2000's fronting his band, Two Cow Garage. Since Two Cow's dissolution Micah has been releasing music on his own. Aided and supported by his equally inspiring partner, Vanessa Jean Speckman, the two have been hitting the road together just trying to earn an honest living doing what they love. His latest album, The Clown Watches The Clock, is a stark depiction of dismal and sometimes bleak moments of living in this country, with some acknowledgment or at least hope for brighter and better times. You can find that and all other releases by Micah at his website https://micahschnabel.com/ and be sure to follow him on all social media accounts too find his latest whereabouts and tours. He will most likely be near you soon!
And as far as influential albums are concerned, he picked a doozy. I was interested in trying to find the connection of Tom Waits' Nighthawks and what Micah does. I think it's a little less obvious than you might think, and realistically we just had some fun with this topic. This is not quite the deep dive I usually take when speaking about an album. Still interesting and sprinkled with facts about Tom and this album.

V&V Episode 128 Colin Dawson(Haunted Horses) & Nico's Desertshore
1/16/2025
First episodes of the new year are always exciting and this one is no exception! This is a very in depth conversation with an interesting artist who describes, in this episode, what kind of music and art he was exposed to basically since birth and how that must have colored his sonic palette to help him create some of the dark and foreboding textures he uses in his band, Haunted Horses. His band has released their new full length album Dweller on the 31G Records imprint on three beautiful slabs of wax which you can choose from here: https://hauntedhorses.bandcamp.com/album/dweller
Their music is characterized by its dissonant, heavy textures and ominous vocals, which makes sense when you bump them up against an album like Nico's 1970 album, Desertshore. So Colin and I dive deep into the history and background of the beautiful yet dark and strange Nico to try to find what about this album helped to shape a portion of how Colin sees music.

V&V Episode 127 the Triceratops & Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come
11/25/2024
The Triceratops are a power noise pop duo from NY. That description may make one think, "that genre doesn't exist!". And you'd be right! Though some of their songs have a very familiar 90's indie rock vibe to them, they still have the ability to throw in some bone rattling, thunderous noise rock elements. So, much like the album of discussion on this episode which is called "The Shape of Punk to Come", that could describe the Triceratops as well. You be the judge. Listen to their new album available though Learning Curve Records here: https://thetriceratopsnyc.bandcamp.com/album/charge

V&V EP 126 Mike Hranica(Town of Lake, The Devil Wears Prada)& PJ Harvey's I Inside The Old Year Dying
11/4/2024
For the past 20 years, Mike has been widely known as the lead singer of the band, The Devil Wears Prada. Sometimes during a long career a musician will break out of their mold and branch out into something new and different, much like the career of our topic of discussion, PJ Harvey. At this moment that musician may take on the moniker of "artist", and that seems to be where Mike is now.
His latest solo project, Town of Lake, in an almost oppositional and confrontational juxtaposition to what TDWP is and does. His new album, Lilac, is an amazingly focused and intricate work that will, no doubt, challenge the average Prada fan, but Mike welcomes the challenge. So we hope you'll take the time to check it out with an open mind and heart. Find it streaming everywhere now and if you'd like to get a personalized vinyl copy, find that here: https://mikehranica.com/
And if you're an "ETERNAL" Prada fan, Mike and the band will be playing near you very soon. Their currently nationwide tour is already in progress and they will be in Europe very soon! Check these dates and get tickets here: https://tdwpband.com/pages/tour

Topic of discussion being Tori Amos' from the choirgirl hotel, is also a very interesting and multi layered masterpiece. From someone who has never really listened to any of her albums, this was a treat.

V&V Episode 122 Laura Larson(Scrunchies, Kitten Forever) & Bikini Kill/Huggy Bear's Split 12"
7/22/2024
There’re not enough good things I can say about today’s guest, Laura Larson! Currently, the primary singer and songwriter for the Minneapolis band, Scrunchies. Their latest album, Colossal, is being released on August 23rd on Learning Curve Records. In short, the album is amazing. Full of lush textures and dynamics, in some part, due to Steve Albini’s sonic treatment that he kind of had on all the projects he worked on. Some part, Laura and the band grabbing hold and claiming stake of themselves as seasoned artists fully in control of their powers as they rolled into their third full length record.
Whatever the magic, it was captured perfectly and available now for vinyl preorder as well as other formats here: https://lcrdistro.com/products/scrunchies-colossal-copy?variant=45024867942554
But wait, there’s more! Did you know that Laura has played in other bands too? Yes! And those were all great too! I’ll just give the quick list version, but seriously, you can’t go wrong with any of these.

7/2/2024
Adam MacGregor is a long time friend, and we've been talking about doing one of these for quite some time. And now finally here we are! I heard you missed us, we're BACK!
Kidding aside, folks, this was a great talk with Adam who is a very talented multi-instrumentalist. He's been in many bands, but he's spending his time these days focusing on two projects, Brown Angel and Soft Corner. Both representing different halves of his artistic brain. And Van Halen's 1984, being a central focus of inspiration on both, and apparent through both of those projects. It's a pretty great choice now that I know all of Adam's work and much more about Van Halen and 1984 specifically. V&V Episode 120 Chris "Simo" Simonelli (GNARNIA) & Sublime's 40 oz. to Freedom
6/15/2024
This is a very special episode for me. Today's guest is none other than the front man of the band I've joined, GNARNIA. I've know Chris for some time now, and he's always struck me as a cool guy. Nice dude. Welcoming. And a hell of a front person. I've been a genuine fan before being a member. So this was a great public opportunity for me to get to know him better. This was an in person interview, so there are some irregularities about it, but that's just the way it goes. He came in to talk about Sublime's 40 oz. to Freedom, which is an album also dear to my heart. So through that lens we touch on being young and dumb, finding punk and hip hop at an early age, seeing Sublime(4 times!) before Bradley's untimely death, skating, surfing, and of course GNARNIA's latest album the double EP Thin Ice/Crime Town available as a limited lathe cut 12" vinyl. V&V Episode 119 Jon Ehlers(Bangladeafy) & NIN's The Downward Spiral
5/22/2024
Jon is very much a New Yorker, though and through. Not exactly what I expected when approached with the idea of speaking to a "industrial" artist that makes heavy, synth driven punk about Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral. Further confounding was the idea that he has been hearing disabled for the majority of his life. That was something that made it irresistible to pass up. And I'm glad I didn't. Bangladeafy is carving out their own path of heavy synth based rock with a punk intensity and attention span. Most albums clocking in under 20 minutes. Their latest album, Vulture (being released June 21, 2024 on Nefarious Industries) is not different in that regard but there's certainly an evolution happening there and we touch on some of that in this conversation. Pre orders are being taken now for CD's and cassettes. You can get that here: https://bangladeafy.bandcamp.com/album/vulture

V&V Episode 117 Matt McGuyer(Amblare, Mock Orange) & Chavez's Ride The Fader
4/8/2024
Matt McGuyer is an incredibly talented singer and songwriter. As you'll learn through this conversation, he's been surrounded by and learning how to play music since he was 5! And it shows! Though, he has not been able to get any recorded works published until now, I can only assume the floodgates have been bashed open and we'll be hearing a lot more from Matt.
This conversation is a bit heavy handed on the loss of Bryan St. Pere. Only because Amblare's new album will most likely be it's only due to Bryan's untimely and tragic passing. It is nice to have Matt to share his personal experiences of getting to know and work with Bryan intimately. They've been able to make a great album and if you're at all a fan of Hum(or Chavez for that matter) I encourage you to get in Amblare. Find the vinyl and streaming here:

4/1/2024
Upon being approached to speak with Jem from We Empty Rooms in Castlemaine, AU, I had to dig into as much of the Dead catalog as possible(there's a lot!). Then I found out about the types of releases WER does, like Dead's new album, Burn Us Clean, a box set of 9 split 7" singles! Most everything they release has amazing artwork which is all silksreened. Then Jem chose this album by Harvey Milk! Fucking bonkers! There's so much to get into, and maybe that's why this show is a little longer than usual, but there was a lot to get in there. The long and the short of it is, if you're here because you know and like Jem's band, Dead and don't know Harvey Milk, you might want to get into them. They have some interesting similarities. and Dead has worked closely with some members of Harvey Milk on some songs. Or if you're here because you like Harvey Milk and this crazy album, A Small Turn of Human Kindness, then you might want to give Dead a shot. also, if you're hunting for any kind of information about this enigmatic album, well this might be the stop for you. V&V Episode 115 Charlie Schmid(Del Judas) & Chris Isaak's Silvertone
3/7/2024
It's nice to be able to dive into something other than heavy, loud, aggressive, noise rock. Not that there's anything wrong with that. And my guest today, Charlie Schmid, would probably agree with me. Having been the drummer for bands like Vaura and Tombs, he's no stranger to loud aggressive music. With that being said, you might think maybe listening to and making music like Chris Isaak is the stranger thing. But it's not. And hopefully this conversation can shed a little bit of light on what that's like or how that can happen.
Silvertone is a great album that draws from the well of old country, honky tonk, rockabilly and even a touch of blues. And Del Judas' music is very similar. He will be releasing a song called Angela on March 15, 2024. This will be the first single from his forthcoming new album. I think the best way to stay in the know about what Del Judas is up to will be at his website.
