317 Arlina Celebrates 30 Years Sober, Her Best Advice for The Newly Sober and Long Term Sobriety

4/25/2024
Thank you for downloading the episode! If youā€™re new here, my name is Arlina and Iā€™ll be your host, and if youā€™re a long time listener, welcome back! At the time of this recording which is 4/23 - I am celebrating 30 years of continuous sobriety! It feels a little surreal to be honest, but mostly I feel deeply grateful. Grateful that I was able to stay sober with the help of so many people, grateful for my relentless curiosity about all things self-help and personal development, and all of the experiences Iā€™ve had as a sober woman. So Iā€™m going to do something a little bit different today. Typically I interview guests about their recovery journey and ask them to share the solutions that helped them get sober, but today, I wanted to share some things that will help people just starting out, some solutions for people who are focused on staying sober, and some of the practices that I use today to address my own mental health. As a disclaimer, if you are physically addicted to any substance, please consult with a medical professional. I am not a doctor, and I donā€™t play one on the internet. This is for educational purposes based on my own personal experiences. With that out of the wayā€¦ First, for those who are thinking about quitting drinking. Iā€™d like to cover some basics that will help you get started. I actually have a free guide called ā€œHow to quit drinking, 30 tips for your first 30 daysā€ that you can download for free at soberlifeschool.com but Iā€™ll go into a little more depth here if you are in the contemplation stage. I think the first step involves coming to the conclusion if you can moderate or not. Like being 100% brutally honest with yourself. You donā€™t even have to tell anyone yet, but that is a question that you have to answer for yourself. What I mean by moderation is, can you create a drinking plan that you can stick to? If you decide you want to drink no more than 2 glasses in an evening, and you fail, that is a sign that you cannot moderate. But what about if you can do it some of the time? I would say that if you cannot stick to it 100% of the time, you cannot moderate. Especially if you experience blackouts, vomiting, interrupted sleep, hangovers, and do or say things under the influence that create problems in relationships, work, or in your finances. If you are not sure, I suggest you run the experiment. Give yourself a plan, a time frame, and give it a shot because you need to know that you cannot moderate if you are going to practice abstinence. If you have enough evidence without having to run the experiment, then itā€™s time to move to the next phase which is getting prepared. I recommend you start by prepping your environment. Take out all the temptation. I donā€™t care if you pour it down the drain, give it away or put it in the trash, but just get it out of your house. After you do that, itā€™s time to let people know. Keep in mind that people receive information with the same intensity and energy that you deliver it. So depending on who you tell, you can keep it light and say something like ā€œhey, Iā€™m focusing on my health right now and creating better habits, so Iā€™m going to go alcohol free for 30 days and I could use your support.ā€ Or there might be people close to you who you feel safe with to say, ā€œI don't think I should drink anymore, and I could really use your support.ā€ The point it to let people know so you donā€™t walk into a situation with friends or family who expect you to drink, and try to have that conversation then. Itā€™s better to give people a heads up so itā€™s not so awkward in the moment. As a side note, you might want to think about what specific support you want. It could be asking someone not to offer you a drink, or drink in front of you. It could be that you ask someone not to lecture you or tease you about it in front of others. It could be that you have a friend that can run interference for you in social situations, like if someone offers you a...

316 Justin B Long on Overcoming Childhood Trauma, Addiction, and The Path of Healing

4/18/2024
Welcome to the podcast! In case you are new here, my name is Arlina Allen and I am the founder of Sober Life School. I have been sober since 4/23/94 (which means I will be celebrating 30 years!) In that time I have been obsessed with self-help, spirituality, psychology, and behavior change. And letā€™s not get it twisted, I did not do it alone. In fact, I have had many many helpers along the way including mentors, sponsors, professional therapists and lots of loving friends and family. As a way to say thank you to them, I try to be as helpful as I can and pass along what was given to me. Thatā€™s why I created a free guide for you with all my best tips on how to start your alcohol-free journey. Itā€™s called ā€œHow to Quit Drinking: 30 tips for your first 30 daysā€. In it you will find strategies on how to avoid common mistakes, foods that will reduce cravings, how to talk about it with friends and family, what to do in social situations, and so much more! So visit soberlifeschool.com, get your free copy and start creating a life you love! And just a little programming note: I recently lost my podcast editor, so this episode and future episodes will be published in the raw and unedited format. I appreciate your patience and continued support! Today Iā€™ll be joined by Justin B. Long. He is an author, business owner of a successful veterinary practice, and author of The Righteous Rage of a Ten-Year-Old Boy. He shares the traumatic events in early childhood that formed his negative self-image, his journey through addiction, and the process of healing that has led to finding peace. You know, after hearing Justinā€™s story, I was reminded of just how painful childhood can be for some people. When I hear these stories, I often feel amazed at how they survive, and the truth is, some people donā€™t. In fact, Justin could have very easily become another statistic - but he didnā€™t. He survived. And not only did he survive, but he is thriving today! That is the story of hope. So without further delay, please enjoy this episode with Justin. 314 Chandler Rogers on How to Overcome Addiction and Loneliness

3/28/2024
Welcome to the podcast! Today Iā€™ll be joined by CEO and Founder Chandler Rogers of the Relay app. Heā€™ll be sharing his story of overcoming addiction to pornography and how it led him to create a highly successful sobriety app to help people connect anonymously. Weā€™re going to talk about how we met, and how after I heard about their project, I decided to partner with them so I could connect with you! Iā€™m always reachable on social media, but not everyone wants to reach out that way. In fact, a lot of people either want to say anonymous or NEED to be anonymous because of work or fear of exposure, or youā€™re not ready to tell your family and friends or whateverā€¦ The point is that we all need a safe place to start, with support, accountability and compassion. So Iā€™ll be hosting a private group, not on social media, totally private, where you can get support from me and others just like you who want to live an alcohol and drug free life. Iā€™m going to give you some instructions but donā€™t worry if you canā€™t remember everything, Iā€™ll put it in the show notes: You can join my recovery team by signing up here: (https://joinrelay.app/odaat), answer Yes when the signup survey asks "Do you already have a group?", and input the team code ONEDAY. You'll get to try Relay for free + 20% off after the free trial, and you can stay as anonymous as you want. I'm excited to meet you soon! 310 Conscious Recovery with TJ Woodward

2/28/2024
My guest today has been sober for over 37 years. He has published several books including ā€œConscious Recovery, A Fresh Perspective On Addictionā€. TJ is a featured thought-leader on wholehearted.org along with Dr. Gabor MatĆ© and Marianne Williamson, and was given the honor of being ordained as an Agape minister by Dr. Michael Beckwith. When I listened to the audible version of his book, I was intrigued by some of his ideas that challenged some of my own personal beliefs about 12 step programs. Ideas that imply that a dependency on anything outside ourselves is just another substitute for what weā€™re addicted to. He actually makes a compelling case that while the 12 step program is great, especially in the beginning of recovery, and that there is more to explore beyond the rooms. Weā€™re going to talk about how to heal through unlearning, how to build self-trust, and how to move past trauma, toxic shame and disconnection. And if you enjoy this episode, please be sure to share with a friend and leave us a review on Apple podcasts. Iā€™m really excited to share this conversation with you, so without further delay, please enjoy this episode with TJ and let me know what you think! Subscribe So You Donā€™t Miss New Episodes! Light is the author of 4 books, the latest being ā€œTravel Light: Spiritual Minimalism to Live a More Fulfilled Lifeā€. The Self-Help Junkie Podcast - How to Rebuild Self-Esteem

2/8/2024
Today is going to be a continuation of a new project called The Self-Help Junkie Podcast. I thought about just making it a series on this podcast, but I decided it should be its own thing. Iā€™ll still be publishing episodes here that are focused on addiction recovery, but just feel like after nearly 8 years, there is another podcast format Iā€™d like to explore that has more of a community aspect to it. That format will be to identify personal development topics like self-esteem, shadow work, manifestation with evidence based practices. We will talk about what they are, why theyā€™re important and to come up with 3 action items that we put into SMART goals so that we reduce the friction of creating new habits. Hereā€™s where you come in. As a community, we can start to implement the action items and ā€œrun the experimentā€ as they say in recovery rooms, to see what outcomes we experience. Weā€™re going to meet bi-weekly on Zoom so you can share your thoughts with us about the action items, challenges you might be having and as a group we can come up with ideas that will help you move forward for a better outcome. The overarching goal with all of this is three fold: to build connection, to feel better, and change our behavior in order to achieve our goals. The founders group will be a $5 monthly membership to help us cover expenses and you can find the link in the show notes or go to patreon.com/selfhelpjunkie https://www.patreon.com/selfhelpjunkie/membership We will be tweaking the podcast along the way based on feedback, so your contributions will have a direct impact on the show. If you have any questions, you can email me at selfhelpjunkiepodcast@gmail.com I havenā€™t been this excited about a new project in a long time. I feel like there are so many of us that are seekers and just below the surface is a helper, so together, I think we can accomplish amazing things! Combat Vetā€™s Memoir Looks Candidly at Substance Abuse, PTSD and Healing

1/31/2024
Welcome to the podcast. In case youā€™re new here, my name is Arlina and Iā€™ll be your host. Before we jump in, I am going to ask for your help. We have been really lucky to get some amazing guests, and I have a whole list of dream guests that I would love to invite. Experts that are in psychology, trauma therapy, spirituality, but also high profile guests like in sports, movies, and other podcasts. But in order to get certain guests, we need to have a significant following and a lot of 5 star reviews. Itā€™s the first thing they look at. So if you could take a moment to either leave a review on Apple Podcasts if thatā€™s how youā€™re listening, or just follow me on Instagram @arlinaallen it would then allow me to get a better response rate. Or shoot, if thereā€™s someone you know who would be a great guest, you can reach out to me on IG for that too. Reach out to me anyway and say hi! I would love to hear from you! And as always, there are several free resources at soberlifeschool.com including the newsletter where you can get episodes delivered right to your email inbox. Today Iā€™m speaking with Bob Stark. He is a combat vet, an author, a family man, a person in long term recovery. Bob shares his story of growing up without a Father, his Motherā€™s multiple marriages, and the one that altered his identity and how all of this set the stage for substance use disorder. That along with 2 tours in Afghanistan and the inevitable resulting PTSD, took him down a dark path. His mother would warn him that it looked a lot like his grandfatherā€™s path who was a vietnam vet and died tragically young of cirrhosis of the liver. Heā€™s going to share how he was able to heal from PTSD through yoga, meditation, writing and the 12 steps. I liked Bob immediately when I met him and I love how he has transformed his life. I know you will too. So without further delay, please enjoy this episode, with Bob! Connect with Bob here: Website: https://secretgardenalaska.org

How To Get Past Your Past With Author Jason VanRuler

1/25/2024
ā€œI think when we get in that victim space, like it makes so much sense and certainly some people have had such horrific experiences, I can see why they would feel that way. But the truth is, that only holds you in that place.ā€ Jason VanRuler Today Iā€™m speaking with Jason VanRuler. He is a licensed therapist, Coach, Speaker and Author of "Get Past Your Past, How Facing Your Broken Places Leads to True Connection". I had so much fun talking with Jason, heā€™s actually really funny, but we also covered a lot of ground in terms of finding practical solutions to the challenges a lot of us face in recovery. Weā€™re going to talk about why we replicate our family of origin, how to forgive your parents, and how to build confidence. We also talk about relationship dynamics and how to move from dysfunctional roles like being the rescuer, the victim, or the bully to being the coach, the survivor and the encourager. The framework is actually very practical and can shift your perspective very quickly. There were so many gems in this conversation, I know youā€™ll walk away with something you can apply to your life today. So without further delay, please enjoy this episode with Jason and please feel free to reach out to me on social media, and let me know what you think! Juilliard Ballerina Finds Recovery From Alcoholism

12/28/2023
On the surface you would think my guest Kimberly Berlin had a fancy life of privilege growing up in the south of France, attending Juillard studying ballet, and traveling all over the world. But behind the veil, was a life of abuse, abandonment and addiction. Today she will share her personal story of addiction, her moment of clarity and how she recovered. We get into some of the problems she encountered with someone at the first 12 step meeting she went to that kept her away for 7 years, but how she ultimately found her way back. Kimberly is now a licensed integrated psychotherapist and IFS practitioner to help people overcome addiction and trauma. Weā€™re going to get into what IFS is and how it works as a modality for trauma therapy. Iā€™ve been doing it myself as a client, and I can personally vouch for how productive it can be at resolving long standing negative behavior patterns. Before we jump in, as usual, I have a couple of announcements. The first one is there is a new guide at Sober Life School.com for those who are just starting their sober journey called ā€œHow to quit drinking: 30 Tips for Your First 30 Daysā€. It has advice on how to prepare your environment, how to navigate social situations and practical tips on how to prevent cravings or what to do when you feel tempted. If you get it, youā€™ll also be added to my newsletter. I have a lot of big plans for 2024 and I canā€™t wait to share them with you! This includes partnerships with other well known teachers, including some NYT bestselling authors! The newsletter is where I will be providing early access links to all the new classes and the Self-Help Junkie online meetings as well. Iā€™ll announce it to people on my email list first, so make sure you get on it for early access and special bonuses.
