Tey Ferrik finds renewed strength via the Dark Side in the penultimate issue of Marvel's The High Republic (Vol. 2), while in Darth Vader (Vol. 3) #34, Sabé must finally decide which path she should take at the urging Anakin Skywalker.
Despite our mentioning it in the show, the discussion about The High Republic Adventures #5 (of 8) from Dark Horse has been removed and will return in our May 31 episode. That's because the issue was abruptly delayed after we recorded this episode. Trust us, it's worth the wait.

Seven Star Wars comics are out today, with five from Marvel and two from Dark Horse. It's atypical to have so many release on a single day but, hey, it's not a bad problem to have. Still, that means a rather long episode this week, along with ads (12 of 'em) and for that we apologize, though we've no control over it.
Plenty of great stories this week, with some standout issues that will chart new paths for characters like Sabe, Chelli Aphra and Luke Skywalker. Let's dive in.

The long-delayed The High Republic Adventures -- Quest of the Jedi from Dark Horse Comics is available and, to borrow a steady cliche, it was was worth the wait. The creative team has created a lavishly illustrated, tightly written one-shot comic set during The High Republic era that features Jedi, the light and dark sides and adds to that era's steadily expanding lore.
In Marvel's Darth Vader: Black, White & Red #1 (of 4), the publisher's penchant for black & white comics finds firm footing in the galaxy far, far away, with Vader the prime subject in three different tales (one of which will anchor all four issues. There is no sparseness in the visual medium, rather clean, precise lines that brim with detail. One tale, by Peach Momoko, will have you forever looking at TIE fighters in a different way.

Episode #338 -- Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)

After a long wait, Dark Horse Comics's The High Republic Adventures: The Nameless Terror #2 (of 4) returns, and what transpires is a wonderful melange of Alien, Star Wars and cosmic horror as our High Republic-era Jedi deal with nasties that go knock in the night (and day). It's a long issues, at 34 pages, and captures a perfect balance between suspense, cosmic horror and space fantasy.
Marvel's Sana Starros #3 (of 5) is a splendid bridging issue that pitches the Starros family's quest into high gear, while at the same time paying homage to the sights and sounds and events of the first phase of The High Republic era, too. Come for Sana's outrage, stay for Deva Lompop's machinations and revel in the reveal of Phel's less-than-honorable intentions.
Finally, Jody Houser's three-issue arc, accompanied by artist Luke Ross, comes to a well-paced conclusion in the pages of Yoda #6 (of 10), and readers are afforded a side of Yoda who is well aware of the dark side and its insidiousness, while acknowledging that the light side cannot exist without it.

Things get interesting between Tey and Vildar Mac as Oliviah lays dying in the desert in the pages of The High Republic (Vol. 2) #8 (of 10), while in Doctor Aphra (Vol. 2) #30, Chelli seemingly gets her wish to die surrounded by beautiful women.
In Bounty Hunters #33, Inferno Squad lays its trap for the hunters, while IG-88 disrupts the grab for power within the Unbroken Clan, much to Vukhora's delight.
Finally, the Ewoks one-shot delivers a dialogue-free mix of stories featuring some prominent murder bears in a wholly satisfying, utterly entertaining story that blends love, fear, murder and optimism. It's an instant classic.

In Star Wars #33, Leia, Luke, Lando, Chewbacca and Amilyn cement new friends -- perhaps potential alllies -- as the flagship comics shifts its focus to Luke's quest for a new lightsaber, while Lando realizes his reputation is more than just a tool to be wielded.

The first of the Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary one-shots arrives today with Jabba's Palace #1 and it's clever and entertaining story about the protocol droid seen on screen in the film in the droid torture chamber. Think of it as the comic version of the "From A Certain Point of View" anthology books.
In The High Republic #7 (of 10), a popular jedi appears to fall, not to the dark side, but to death, while in The Blade #4 (of 4) we learn about the origins of the Barash vow and it's effect on Porter Engle and the entire Jedi Order.

Back to a more manageable haul of Star Wars comics, with the second arc of the second volume of The High Republic kicking off in issue #6 (of 10) as Jedha City reacts to the infighting and riots and the Guardians of the Whills find renewed purpose.
In Sana Starros #2 (of 5), deep family ties and history are revealed in a story that stretches back to the first phase of The High Republic era and includes a referential stop by the Solo: A Star Wars Story film.
Finally, Bounty Hunters #32 brings Inferno Squadron to the fore, along with a nod to a species that was first featured in West End Games' Star Wars roleplaying game. Perhaps more important, is levels of character development for Zuckuss, which made this issue a standout.

Six new titles are out this March 1, including Hyperspace Stories, Star Wars, Han Solo & Chewbacca, The Blade, Hidden Empire and The Mandalorian, giving readers a bounty of choices up and down the Star Wars timeline, from The High Republic era to darn near close to the opening refrain of Return of the Jedi.

At last, The High Republic -- The Nameless Terror #1 (of 4) is in comic shops. Was it worth the wait?
Yes, very much so.
Will it be difficult to wait almost two months until issue #2 is released?
Yes, if #1 is anything to go by, since George Mann, Eduardo Mello, Ornella Savarese, Studio RAM, Matt Dryer, Sanjay Dharawat, Stephen Reichert and Samantha Hummer have delivered a crackling debut issue that ties into The High Republic mythology with ease while creating an aura of suspense.
In Yoda #4 (of 10), writer Jody Houser returns to the galaxy a long time ago, reteaming with artist Luke Ross for a three-issue arc that features Yoda in a story set before the Prequel Trilogy and featuring Jedi Master Dooku. THey're joined by color artist Nolan Woodard and letter Joe Caramagna of Virtual Caligraphy.
It's a well-paced start that gives us more elements of the Count before his faith in the Jedi was lost and features a trio of young Padawans -- a togorian, wookiee and trandoshan -- that echoes Dooku's own relationship with SIfo-Dyas. Astute readers will recognize a key event in this issue from the pages of Age of Republic: Count Dooku #1. That issue has more emotional heft now.
Finally, in Doctor Aphra (Vol. 2) #29, Aphra finds herself in an unusual spot: Completely oblvious to the Spark's dire plans. The story by Alyssa Wong, artist Natacha Bustos, color artist Rachelle Rosenberg and letter Joe Caramagna, blends long-ago history with the effort by Chelli's friends to come to her rescue in a brisk story.

Only love can, and will, break your heart, as Valance learns in the pages of Bounty Hunters #31 with his hope for a quiet life with Jyala brutally erased. It's T'onga who steps up to carry him away in a bid to find some sort of peace, be it inner or outer, though it's clear than an inferno is brewing.
In Star Wars #31, Amilyn Holdo gives new meaning to "the Holdo Maneuver," as she, Luke, Leia, Lando, Chewie and Lobot find themselves mystified yet intrigued by the No-Space locale and the history of a long-dead Jedi from The High Republic Era.

_ Lando #1 is the latest one-shot, coming in May, from Marvel as part of its celebration of Return of the Jedi's 40th anniversary. It will join the already announced Jabba's Palace and Ewoks one-shots, along with the as-yet announced Emperor Palpatine, Stormtroopers and Smugglers one-shots. All six issues will be collected in a TPB due out Oct. 31 called Star Wars: Scoundrels, Rebels and The Empire.
_ Look out for The Mandalorian 2, a likely eight-issue maxi-series adapting season two of the Disney+ television series, later this year, probably in May or June. It'll feature the same creative team as the just-concluded The Mandalorian adaptation.
_ The Blade TPB, collecting the four-issue mini-series, appears set for release on June 27.
_ All 10 issues of the Yoda maxi-series will be collected in one trade-paperback and is due for release Oct. 31.

Years of close-quarter living erupt as the powder keg that is Jedha City finally ignites in The High Republic (Vol. 2) #5 (of 10) in an issue that features several key first appearances and is better understood if you've listened to (or read) George Mann's The Battle of Jedha.
Hidden Empire #3 (of 5) ties into events from Darth Vader (Vol. 2), as well as Crimson Reign and the first Lando mini-series as Chanath Cha and the Orphans take him on with results that left us surprised.
Finally, in Darth Vader (Vol. 3) #31, Anakin/Vader tries to right what seems to be the biggest mistake of his life as seeks to press the Handmaidens into his -- and the Empire's -- service as they strive to rescue Sabe from Jul Tambor.

Almost eight years since her debut in the early issues of 2015's Star Wars (Vol. 2), Sana Starros is leading her own five-issue mini-series (Star Wars: Sana Starros) that promises to detail her early life and how she came to be who she is.

In Doctor Aphra #28, Sana Starros and the crew learn the finer points of corporate raiding and takeovers as Domina Tagge shows why any acquisition, no matter how hostile, is nothing but smoke and mirrors.

After five books the week prior, we're down to just one new Star Wars comic this week -- Star Wars (Vol. 3) #30 -- but the lone title has much to offer in terms of advancing the story arc as well as linking to Lucasfilm's ambitious new era, The High Republic.
Featuring classic Original Trilogy stalwarts, Lando, Leia, Luke and Chewbacca, along with the Sequel Trilogy's Amilyn Holdo, the Rebels are adrift in No-Space in a bid to find fuel for the Rebellion. What transpires is a confrontation with Nihil droids and a surprising final page that leads into the next issue.
