Media & Entertainment Podcasts

Hello everyone and welcome. We are the Split Screen Synics and we love video games. We love playing them, arguing about them, reading into them way more than any normal person really should and also talking about them. Split Screen Synics is a show by fans for fans where we talk the industry while also providing a little bit of creative flair with our commentary. It may get a little out of hand at times, but we feel that this is where the magic will happen. Give it a listen and join us as we talk video games.

SSS - Episode 83: Death's Door (Gameclub)

11/2/2021
It's a bittersweet one with episode 83 - We finally get around to talking about Death's Door, the amazing indie title by developer Acid Nerve that is an all around gem of a game, but as it turns out this episode becomes something of a swan song for the current Synics team. It's kind of fitting in a way that it is Garrett and Berto talking Death's Door - the genesis of the Synics back in 2018 was this pair and it's only grown from there. Come for the always fun game talk, stay for the nostalgia and weepy send off. SSS - Episode 82: Latin America Takes Over

10/5/2021
Shan and Berto take over this episode in an all Latin America hosted Split Screen Synics just in time for Hispanic Heritage month - Actually we really missed Garrett and Tim but they were unable to make the episode this time around, we didn't exclude them. It's been a busy past two weeks with just a few games played, but that didn't stop the news cycle from churning- Rumors of a 4K Nintendo Switch are again circulating, PlayStation adds more to their first party studio arsenal, and Konami is...making games again? This is just a few things we discuss in this episode - come for the news, stay for Shan and Berto. Subscribe for more Synical awesomeness! SSS - Episode 81: Technical Issues Can't Stop Us!

9/21/2021
We're coming at you a day late because of corrupted sound files, technical issues, and a host of other maladies from the powers that be who tried to deny you of your Synical goodness; that can't stop the Synics! We put together Frankenstein's monster of an episode - it actually sounds purty good - where we talk about Garrett and Tim's take on Devotion, Shan not happy about paying money for 12 minutes, and Berto talking about how he thinks Death's Door is a contender for his person GoTY. In the news we dissect the Playstation Showcase of awesome games, and look into Twitch finally doing something about hate raids - oh and shitty company Activision Blizzard is still shitty...but that's not really news now is it? SSS - Episode 80: Devotion (Gameclub)

9/6/2021
We had a huge storm in the NY area that caused some major damage and flooding - Garrett and Tim weren't able to join us for this recording unfortunately, but the show must go on with means that you get all latine episode with the two South American hosts. Shan and Berto guide this creaky ship and bring into port with all their best video game takes With spoopy season coming up soon, Shan picked an appropriate game for the time of year to talk about for Game Club. We take a deep dive into Red Candle Games' psychological thriller 'Devotion' and give our impressions with our playthroughs. You definitely want to listen in on this one - before diving into it, we talk a little bit about some of the games we're playing and Berto shares some news... Subscribe for more Synical awesomeness! SSS - Episode 78: Everhood (Gameclub)

8/2/2021
We have a full panel of hosts back! Garrett is back and realizes how much he misses the rest of us despite his replacement avatar polling well with listeners. We missed Garrett and it's nice to have all 4 Synics back together to talk games. Before diving into Everhood (which Berto insists on calling Everwood...the real ones will know) the Synics take some time to talk about the ongoing lawsuit between the state of California and Activision Blizzard. It's important to make sure the discourse around this doesn't die out as part of the regular news cycle and that we make sure to keep those in charge accountable - The Synics stand with the employees of Activision Blizzard. Following up with that is our deep dive into Tim's pick for Gameclub which is the lovely and charming rhythm game published by Foreign Gnomes and Surefire Game. A lovely little gem of a game that has some crazy moments and music that really slaps. Listen in to see what we have to say. Subscribe for more Synical awesomeness! SSS - Episode 77: Shan Returns!

7/19/2021
Shan has come back to the show!!!! After her move west Shan has returned to the virtual couch to talk to us about all things video games. The Synic community missed her so it was nice to have have her back to talk about all the usual synic things. We talk about that new AC live service strategy for their their games, Nintendo doing nintendo things and getting away with it and some crazy video game cartridges selling for obscene prices. Oh yeah and Berto's son acts a fool so he steps away for a bit (kids am I right?) Subscribe for more Synical awesomeness! Man it's been hot lately, but that won't stop the Synics from doing what they do best...talk about random things and THEN video games! This episode is dope as always so get ready for some good listening. Also there was a bit in the middle where dropped internet lead to some audio funky stuff, but I think we made it work. Enjoy! SSS - Episode 75: Skul the Hero Slayer (Gameclub)

6/14/2021
It's back to the duo that started it all. Garret and Berto are helming this episode of SSS with Tim taking a breather with his hectic work week and with Shan in the middle of a move. We're talking Skul which was Berto's pick for the Gameclub. It was a charming little demo that was played at PAX East before the world went into lockdown and now that the game has a full release, do the Synics still feel as charmed about it now as when they first played it? download, listen and see what we think. SSS - Episode 74: Spanky is the name of the Monkey

5/31/2021
Do you remember how frustrating that one mechanic in that one game was? Well lucky for you that favorite developer of yours is releasing a remaster of said game that fixes that issue and gives you the privilege of having to buy a little statue thing to use this feature. Wanna know who this blurb is about and hear the Synics (mainly Berto rant about this) well lucky for you all, there is a new episode out for your listening pleasure Subscribe for more Synical awesomeness! SSS - Episode 73: Mortal Kombat (Spoiler Talk) - What's your Arcana?

5/17/2021
Where does 2021s Mortal Kombat reboot stack up in relation to other MK movies and other video game movies in general? Gotta listen to find out. We talk about the new film and give our takes on it and it's place in the world. It's a fun time and we enjoyed talking about a movie about a game instead of just games so we may make this a regular thing, we'll see. Flawless Victory! Subscribe for more Synical awesomeness! SSS - Episode 72: It's the Peanut Virus

4/25/2021
What's going on in the news of video games? A lot it turns out- Sony is not closing down the PS3 and Vita storefront, Discord tells Microsoft that they can't be bought for $10 Billion, and Former Days Gone creative director John Garvin is blaming fans for the game not getting a sequel. Like I said, a lot to unpack and we do our best to unpack it all in the only way we know how. We also talk about Monster Hunter Rise, the poop game that is Binding of Isaac and more in this packed episode. Subscribe for more Synical awesomeness! SSS - Episode 71: Loop Hero (Gameclub)

4/10/2021
The boys are back in town. It's Garrett's pick this time for gameclub and he picked a charming little indy title that is one part rogue-like, one part auto battler, one part deck builder and all parts making Berto play a deck building game. Mr. Lou Piro gets his hooks in Tim and Garrett, but Berto is still on the fence. Even though Shan is not on this epsiode, she gave her quick notes on the game so if you want to know what she has to say, tune it to find out.

SSS - Episode 69: SOMA (Gameclub)

3/15/2021
The newest and coolest member of the Synics has her first Gameclub pick discussed and boy is it a heavy one. What is the self and what does it mean to be human? Is it it our memories that make us who we are, or is it something more that cannot be described or quantified? See what I mean? This is some existential type, next level stuff that the Synics talk about in this Gameclub. You absolutely don't want to miss it, unless you've already heard it before in a different form when your brain scan was downloaded into a previous vessel...Actually listen to it again even if you heard it. We also have a bunch of Nintendo news, Microsoft closing on their deal to buy Bethesda parent company Zenimax, and Berto sucks at building things Check it all out here in episode 69 of the Split Screen Synics

SSS - Episode 68: Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Gameclub)

2/28/2021
Another day, another video game to add to the Gameclub discussion for the end of year awards. This time around the Synics spend some time talking about Yakuza: Like a Dragon and the crazy things they enjoyed about this 2020 title by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. Before that though Shannon waxes poetic about her love of Resident Evil, Garrett talks about a fun little indie gem called Noita, Tim spends some time with Valheim, and Berto is continuing to foster a love/hate relationship with Cybershadow. There's also some news spattered in there, and Garrett is not happy with the latest Nintendo Direct. Listen to the latest episode to find out why.

SSS - Episode 67: A New Synic Enters

2/16/2021
Aside from episode 1, this may very well be the most important episode in Synics history, If you weren't there live, well then you missed out; Cybershannonn has joined us on this crazy train wreck we call a podcast and we could not be any happier than we are...except for Garrett who hates us and missed the episode. Check out the episode that is going to forever change the game and chart a new course for the Synics. Oh yeah, we talk about video games too

SSS - Episode 66: Third Annual Synical Awards

1/31/2021
It's that time of the year again, when a bunch of talking heads get together to talk about their best of the best in gaming for the prior year. The Synical Awards are similar to other shows/podcasts that do that, but totally better with 1000% more awesome. We are joined once more by the insanely dope Cybershannonn and talk about the best of the best, the best of the worst and also the best of the comments. Who wins? Who loses and who gets a cookie? You gotta listen to see who takes home a coveted Golden Couch. (we also did this live with animations and stuff)

SSS - Episode 65: Cyberpunk 2077 (Gameclub)

1/16/2021
Lucasfilm Games gets revived and will now handle all the quality of games that are set in a galaxy far, far away. One third of the Synics are excited for what this means (you can guess who isn't) because they want to see the open world, story driven Star Wars game that an result. There is also and Indiana Jones game in the works and a brief few words on when Mircrosoft wanted to buy Nintendo and got laughed out of meeting. Segment 3 is the long awaited Cyberpunk game club - there has been so much said and written about the game and how CD Projekt Red handled the release, but now we get the definitive answer on how the game was received.
