Ep. 23: Watchmen Final Stand

12/30/2019
The voicemailers dominate this final mailbag edition of Shat on TV: Watchmen, with five callers sharing their opinions on everything from Dr. Manhattan to podcasts themselves. Plus, a King Bee critic calls in with an apology. Newsstand email covers listeners' final thoughts on the season as a whole, key characters, and even an "umm ... actually" about autism. Watchmen Episode 9 Summary: “See How They Fly” Trieu is revealed to be Veidt's daughter, and in 2008, developed a machine to capture Doctor Manhattan's power which she wants to use for herself. Later, she helps Veidt to escape Europa, and wants him there along with Bien, a clone of her mother, when she activates her device in downtown Tulsa. The Kavalry, working with the Cyclops leadership capture Manhattan, and Joe Keene prepares to take his powers. Laurie discovers Looking Glass is alive, disguised as a Kavalry member. Just as the Kavalry activate their system, Trieu teleports the setup to downtown Tulsa, finding Joe has become ooze, and kills the Cyclops leadership. Before he is killed by Trieu, Manhattan uses the distraction to teleport Veidt, Laurie, and Looking Glass to Karnak, where Veidt reworks his squid-rain system to send frozen squid to pulverize the area around Triue's device, killing Trieu. Angela takes shelter in the theater where Will and her children are. Will explains Manhattan had worked with him to bring this end, a necessary conclusion. Laurie and Looking Glass bring Veidt to justice using the copy of the 1985 video. Angela offers Will a room at their home, and while cleaning up eggs from the night before, recalls Manhattan's statement about transferring his powers through an organic medium. Finding one unbroken egg, Angela eats it and attempts to walk on water as she saw Manhattan do the night before. Based on your letters and voicemail, "Watchmen" Episode 9 hit a home run. The season finale, "See How They Fly," satisfied viewers who wanted a story with few loose ends and a simple resolution. It also fueled tons of conversation about why Angela Abar ate the egg, what Europa meant to Adrian Veidt, and whether Lady Trieu was Trieuly Evil. This Newsstand edition of Shat on TV covers the love between Angela and Dr. Manhattan, the Curse of Comic Book Knowledge, Garth Brooks, and The King Bee's surprising ability to recollect poetry. Ep. 21: Watchmen - 109 - Deep Dive

12/18/2019
The season finale, "See How They Fly," inspired our last, longest and best "Watchmen" Deep Dive. Gene examines whether Doctor Manhattan committed suicide. Roger ponders why Angela Abar was so quick to gobble her magic egg. The King Bee worships at the altar of Ozymandias, and the three rate how well each character was used. Finally, the Shat boys end the Deep Dive with their thoughts on how TV might never be the same. Roger proposes a 30-minute bonus episode of "Watchmen," and we talk about big eyebrows and "medium strong" anatomy. Have a quick listen, write us at hosts@shatontv.com, and listen for your email on the bonus Newsstand edition. Ep.19: Watchmen - 108 - Newsstand

12/13/2019
"Watchmen" Episode 8 focused on Dr. Manhattan and Angela Abar, so we weren't surprised when your letters also centered around the two biggest characters in Damon Lindelof's new TV universe. Email and voicemail sparked conversation about tachyonic antitelephones, whether Topher's being fed mini-bites of blue goodness, and how Adrian Veidt still fits into the story. Watchmen Episode 8 Summary: “A God Walks into A Bar” In Vietnam in 2009, Doctor Manhattan attempts to convince Angela to have dinner with him the next night, as they will fall in love later. Angela is highly skeptical, and Manhattan, after explaining his non-linear experience with time, explains that since 1985, he had been creating life on Europa, and that in 2019, he will fall in love with her just as he is about to be taken by the Seventh Kavalry. He explains how he took up the identity of Cal to blend in, and used a device created by Veidt to give him amnesia about his true identity until it was necessary for Angela to take it out. At Veidt's request, Manhattan transported him to the Europa environment, and also visited Will to encourage him to help Angela in 2019. Angela, speaking to Manhattan in 2019, asks him to ask Will in 2009 about how he knew of Judd's secrets, but realizes she created that idea to Will just now. As the Kavalry prepare to attack, Angela goes to protect Manhattan, who sees this as the moment he fell in love with her, and helps her fend them off, knowing one last Kavalry member remained alive to use a tachyon cannon to capture him. In 2009, Angela accepts Manhattan's dinner proposal. In a post-credit scene, the Game Warden gives a captive Veidt another anniversary cake, which Veidt finds a horseshoe baked inside, and in glee, starts to dig his escape. Ep.18: Watchmen - 108 - Deep Dive

12/10/2019
Episode 8, "A God Walks into A Bar." A Watchmen Deep Dive told in three acts. Act 1: Gene Lyons, a man who took two semesters of physics at Arizona State University, attempts to explain the string theory and bootstrap paradox of Dr. Manhattan's existence while also arguing that Will Reeves destroyed Cyclops on his own. Fast forward to Act 2 (34:00) if you don't care about retrocausality. Act 2: Non-practicing Catholic Roger Roeper proves, once again, that any major TV character can be connected to Jesus Christ if you try hard enough. He also examines gods vs. men playing gods as he compares the archetypes presented in Ozymandias and Dr. Manhattan. Zip ahead to Act 3 (50:00) if the Bible doesn't interest you. Act 3: The King Bee explores what Adrian Veidt's persecution in the post-credits scenes tells us about Europa and Veidt's motivations. Oh, and he takes a stab at the horseshoe thing. It's pretty good. She also learns that the Manhattan phone booths supposedly connected to Mars route to Trieu's facilities before Trieu herself tells her Manhattan is actually on Earth, in Tulsa, disguised as a human. After learning of the Kavalry's plan to capture and destroy Manhattan to become like him, Trieu plans to activate the Millennium Clock within the hour to save the world. Angela breaks free, rushes home, and tells Cal she loves him as a husband - calling him by the name Jon - before she bashes his head in and pulls out a small disc shaped like Manhattan's symbol; his body starts to glow blue. Laurie goes to speak to Jane Crawford about her husband's death, but falls into a trap door and is taken to the Kavalry's headquarters, where Joe reveals their plan to capture Manhattan to fight against white discrimination. Laurie's partner Petey tries to track down Looking Glass, finding his fallout shelter filled with dead Kavalrymen, but no sign of him. Meanwhile, Veidt is put on a year-long trial by the Game Warden, which he treats as a farce. Ep.15: Watchmen - 107 - Deep Dive

12/3/2019
Episode 7, "An Almost Religious Awe" delivered the biggest plot twists we've seen so far, but were they overly telegraphed? And are they true to the "Watchmen" spirit? Our seventh "Watchmen" Deep Dive dissects some of the decisions made by Damon Lindelof's team as The King Bee busts out some Reflectatine and Gene Lyons explains why Episode 7 is the nadir of an extraordinary HBO series and might be setting up a great ending. Watchmen Episode 7 Summary: “An Almost Religious Awe” Angela continues to be treated for the Nostalgia, her own memories of losing her parents and her grandmother June in Vietnam mingled among Will’s. Angela learns that the Manhattan phone booths supposedly connected to Mars simply route to this facility, and Trieu tells her Doctor Manhattan is actually on Earth, in Tulsa, disguised as a human. Trieu is aware that the Kavalry plan to capture and destroy Dr. Manhattan, as to become like him; Trieu is planning to activate the Millennium Clock to execute some plan within the hour to save the world. Angela breaks free, rushes home, and after telling Cal she loves him as a husband, she bashes his head in with a hammer and pulls out a small disc shaped after Manhattan’s symbol. Laurie goes to speak to Jane Crawford about her husband’s death, but falls into a trap door and taken to the Kavalry headquarters, where Joe reveals their plan to capture Manhattan to fight against white discrimination. 11/29/2019
Thanksgiving weekend be damned; we just can't stop talking about "Watchmen!" True to the excess of holiday binging and Black Friday shopping, this supersized Newsstand edition is overflowing with listener mail and voicemail. We'll explore whether Looking Glass is the worst cop ever, how Nostalgia works, Lady Trieu's secrets, Jehovah's Witnesses, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Adrian Veidt's escape attempts, and more. He is called a hero the next day, and supported by his wife June, takes on the persona of “Hooded Justice”. Will is invited to the Minutemen by Captain Metropolis, but when Will finds that “Cyclops” is a plan by the KKK to hypnotize black people at movie theaters to incite riots among themselves across the country, they refuse to help. 11/26/2019
Episode 6, "This Extraordinary Being" rewrote the book on flashback episodes and introduced a second powerful origin story, unmasking Hooded Justice and daring to explore the rage of the marginalized and the phenomenon of benevolent racism. Our sixth "Watchmen" Deep Dive outlines seven big reveals, breaks down the music used in the episode, and scours Peteypedia for the latest dirt on Lady Trieu.
