Vet Tech Cafe - Kathleen Dunbar Episode

5/12/2024
Caffeinators, it's already May and if you've followed us for a while, you know May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we dedicate our May episodes to mental health issues in our profession. This year, we have two awesome episodes for you-each featuring an RVT, both from Canada, that are pivoting in their careers from clinical medicine to supporting veterinary workers in the area of Mental Health. First up is Kathleen Dunbar, RVT, VTS(Clinical Practice-C/F). She has a Masters Degree in Social Work and is working to become a veterinary social worker, as she has worked in the mental health field for 25 years alongside her veterinary career. Her passion is death, grief, and end of life support and provides both individual and group support for pet parents and veterinary team members throughout the east coast of Canada. This was a fascinating and thought-provoking discussion you don't want to miss! Vet Tech Cafe - Ashleigh Walsh Episode

4/28/2024
Caffeinators, pack your bags and fasten your seatbelts. We're going to where the water spins backwards. We're headed back to the Southern Hemisphere, specifically New Zealand! We met a wonderful Kiwi at IVECCS last year, Ashleigh Walsh, at the AVECCTN pinning ceremony. When we learned she was there from New Zealand we knew we had to have her on as a guest. It took until THIS WEEK to figure out the logistics as she's 19 hours and 16 hours ahead of Jeff and Dave, respectively. What an awesome conversation! We learned some things that blew our minds-did you know New Zealand doesn't have snakes? We talked so much about what it looks like to become an RVN in New Zealand, the fact that Ashleigh is the FIRST VTS(ECC) there, the profession and so much more. This episode is so much fun. Come for her accent, stay for her knowledge. We really enjoyed this one and we hope you do too! Vet Tech Cafe - Jennifer Gunther Episode

4/14/2024
Caffeinators, are you ready to have your mind blown? We've long thought it's time to rethink veterinary technician education, and many out there agree. Thankfully, Jennifer Gunther is someone that is out there doing it. She's been an educator at Denver Community College's vet tech program for 20+ years, and they have recently started an apprenticeship program that exists separately and in addition to their standard, 2 year AVMA accredited program. But here's the deal: It's not an alternate route/alternate pathway. They still graduate with a 2 year degree, it's still AVMA approved, they just work 30 hours a week at an approved hospital and do the education part remotely. Jennifer discusses all the ins and outs of an apprenticeship program, and the hoops they had to go through with the US Department of Labor to get approval, along with vetting the hospitals and applicants, and SO MUCH MORE. She talks challenges and the uniqueness of the program-it is the FIRST and ONLY so far in the US! Is this the future of veterinary technician education? Take a listen and let us know what you think. Vet Tech Cafe - Simon Chavez Episode

3/31/2024
Caffeinators, have you ever thought about what it would be like to be a traveling veterinary technician? Maybe have a home base, but otherwise constantly on the road traveling to all corners of the US and working relief? Then have we got an episode for you! Our friend Simon Chavez recently stopped by one of our locations-it may have been Chicago, Boston, or Anchorage, we're not sure-but we had a very interesting conversation on what life and a career look like as a locum technician! We talked about how Simon built his network of hospitals he does most of his relief at, how he builds his schedule, getting started, taxes, travels, licensing, all of it. We literally circled the map in this discussion, and we're sure that in the time since we recorded this episode, Simon has re-circled the US again as well! Oh, and we also talk about his traveling sidekick, Bruce Wayne! Vet Tech Cafe - Doc Jim Hurrell Episode

3/17/2024
Caffeinators, if you've been listening in a while, you've heard several guests recommend Doc Jim when we ask who they think we should talk to. And guess what?! We got him! We don't often have veterinarians on our podcast, but there are those who are integral to our development as a profession and Doc Jim is certainly one of them! Holy cow was this episode fun! He is such a huge supporter "of our amazing profession" and we talk extensively about how he gave up practicing as a small animal veterinarian over 40 years ago to blaze the path of being involved in veterinary technician education. It's really mind-boggling what a trailblazer he was at that time. We talk a lot about vet tech education and how that's evolved and how the leadership in our field has evolved as well. This episode is as fun as it is fascinating. You don't want to miss this one! Vet Tech Cafe - Ralia Cortinas Episode

2/4/2024
Caffeinators, we need more personality in our field. We need young minds and fresh faces with big goals to grow into the roles many of us currently occupy, and Ralia Cortinas may just be one of those people that checks those boxes. Ralia is currently a student in the Distance Learning program through Purdue University, but the credentialing process is clearly very important to her. We talk a lot about her being an OJT assistant in Texas and some of her DVM colleagues views of that, while also looking forward to the future. Ralia reminds us how important it is to have hobbies OUTSIDE of vet med-no, going home and caring for a house/farm full or pets and critters doesn't count. Just take a few minutes and listen to us read Ralia's bio she sent to us, and you'll see why this is going to be a great episode! Vet Tech Cafe - Sydney Hoevet Episode

1/21/2024
Caffeinators, we talk about veterinary technician education all the time, but we don't often get to talk to the stakeholders-the students. Our next two episodes focus on that. First up is Sydney Hoevet, a student in the vet tech program at Portland Community College. It's always refreshing to look at our profession through fresh, less jaded eyes than our own. It's also really nice to hear the profession seems to be in good hands going forward. In this episode, we talk about a common link between Sydney and a previous Vet Tech Cafe guest that we didn't know about, what veterinary technician curriculum currently looks like and some of the struggles vet tech students face. A fun "aside" in this episode is that her twin sister is in human medicine and wanting to go to human nursing school and we talk about some of the similarities and differences there too! Vet Tech Cafe - Darci Palmer Episode

1/7/2024
Caffeinators, are you a Veterinary Anesthesia Nerd? If so, you'll love this episode with the final part of the trifecta that is the Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds, Darci Palmer. We ran into Darci at IVECCS and pitched the idea of her being a guest and thankfully she obliged because this is an awesome episode. Darci currently works in Anesthesia at Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, and that's where much of our discussion lies-veterinary education. But it doesn't stop there. She runs labs. She gives didactic lectures. She's not *just* an anesthesia tech-she designed this role to be what it is and it's incredible to hear the story. This was a fascinating discussion about how she's helping to shape these future veterinarians careers and also instilling in them the value of different staff roles and the value of credentialing. Vet Tech Cafe - Bill Wade Episode

11/26/2023
Hey Caffeinators! We're back to our regularly scheduled programming! We had some scheduling issues getting this episode recorded as it was supposed to be released on Veteran's Day here in the US. Why Veteran's Day, you ask? Because that's really the focus of this episode. Bill Wade started in the US Air Force in the 1970's, transferred to the US Army in the 1980's and worked as a veterinary technician all those years! He also was in organizational leadership as well, and at two separate times was President of what was then the North American Veterinary Technician Association, now NAVTA, when Canada was still a part of it before they split off to form their own associations. This was a fascinating discussion about what things looked like through a lens very few of us likely have had the opportunity to look through. Grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy this one! Vet Tech Cafe - Veterinary Viewfinder Collaboration

11/19/2023
Hey Caffeinators, welcome back to another episode of ... the Veterinary Viewfinder?! That's right! If you've been listening to us the last few months, and the Veterinary Viewfinder podcast as well, we've both been dropping nuggets back and forth about how we handle all their complaints and they record in our basement and pick up your tab in the Taproom. It's all in good fun as they have been so kind and helpful to us over the years with advice and honestly just a good model to follow on how to do this. They reached out a while back to see if we wanted to do a mashup and of course we did! We got to know them a lot better, and them for us much the same, and just had a really fun conversation about who we are, what we do, and why we do it. Definitely check this one out-it was a lot of fun to head down to the basement for this episode. We really liked what they've done with the place. Make sure to follow the Veterinary Viewfinder!
