Education Podcasts

The education system teaches us to learn and recall information and at the end of it we are tested and expected to then pass exams. After all said and done the reality is, we are supposed to get a job at the end of it. I was unaware of the difficulties I would encounter at work especially as a Black Woman. How do I navigate work and how do I keep a job? Education institutions do not prepare you for work, racism, bullying, and oppressive managers in the workplace. Where the education system has not prepared you, I will. Toya Talks is a platform birthed on my day to day uploads on Snapchat. I discuss the realities of work from the perspective of a Black Woman and how I have successfully navigated work using my experiences. Toya Talks Podcast covers the world of work and not just the corporate world. Black Women for too long have been overlooked and underrepresented in the workplace. Toya Talks is a safe place and a platform to share, grow and learn, more importantly, educate ourselves and everyone else so we can navigate and grow in the world of work more smoothly. This Podcast contains my opinions and feelings based on my lived experiences, my opinions and my Black experience. My views and experiences are in no way intended to cause offence. Lets put the sensitivity to one side, prepare to laugh, learn & grow!!!!

Diane Abbott

The world can be unkind, and for Black Women, the sting of racism and microaggressions is a harsh reality. I share a potent blend of personal stories and societal critique, focusing on my own experience at a swim school that became a battleground for parental rights and racial tensions. The episode also casts a lens on the political landscape, dissecting the Labour Party's response to bigotry and the media's role in shaping public perception. Through this narrative, we uncover the vital importance of speaking out, standing firm, and the power of allies in the struggle against discrimination. As we navigate the undulating terrain of professional and personal growth, the stories of those like Diane Abbott and Raye serve as beacons of resilience and self-belief. In this episode, I examine the ways Black Women can equip themselves with expertise and confidence to confront workplace challenges, and I celebrate the triumphs of those who bet on themselves and won. To all my listeners, your unwavering support is the wind beneath the wings of the Toyah Talks podcast, and together, we'll continue to uplift each other and champion our collective well-being. End of Year Wrap Up 2023

12/30/2023
As the year comes to a close, I find myself in a poignant reflection of the personal and societal transformations that have left an indelible mark on 2023. The landscape of the UK has been one of tumultuous change, from royal family disclosures to political upheaval and an economic maelstrom that has held our leaders' feet to the fire. Suella Is Not Brave

11/13/2023
Number 10 Downing St is the HQ. For us mere mortals it represents organisations we work for. Suella Braverman is an employee. The sacking of Braverman is more than an angry boss letting go of an employee this is the dynamics of a manager, CEO, Line Manager and HR not recruiting well and then dealing with the fall out of a rogue employee. In this episode we delve deeper and draw learnings for our own strategic ventures in the world of work. Let me be clear, I do not believe democracy exists in this country but this country purports to be democratic. When you seek to control the narrative there is no freedom of speech, when you dictate how a peaceful March should be done you erode democracy when you attempt to remove freedoms to push a personal agenda or narrative you erode democracy. I do not believe true democracy exists in this country. God Is In The Neighbourhood

9/4/2023
The workplace has never been a safe place and is not a safe space for Black Women. Being pregnant places women in a vulnerable position, your hormones are raging, your body is changing and you are growing a whole human. Many of us are also managing underlying health conditions too. In spaces where Black Women are not afforded fragility I never felt safe to share with employers or colleagues that I was pregnant. I held down two contracts whilst pregnant and did not disclose my pregnancy. I attended all my hospital and midwife appointments and for 9 months grew a whole child whilst working remotely and never having to share my pregnancy. It felt safer to say nothing. Whilst I recognise this is not possible for all my fellow Black Women, in this episode i share why I made this decision and how I managed to navigate my pregnancy and maintain my privacy whilst still stacking for my maternity leave. Credit Suisse

7/3/2023
Following on from the previous episode ' I like Money' I needed to do this episode. We are in a cost of living crisis which I believe is a fancy way of saying 'recession'. Others would define it as... 'a situation where the cost of basic necessities and everyday expenses rises significantly, outpacing the income and financial resources of individuals or households. It means that the cost of essential goods and services, such as housing, food, healthcare, education, transportation, and utilities, is increasing at a faster rate than people's wages or income growth. This imbalance can result in financial hardship and economic instability for individuals and families, as they struggle to afford the basic necessities of life. A cost of living crisis can have wide-ranging impacts on society, including increased poverty rates, decreased standards of living, and heightened inequality. It often necessitates discussions and actions aimed at addressing the root causes of rising costs and finding ways to improve affordability and financial well-being for individuals and communities.' In a cost of living crisis even more so you have to understand and know how to pivot including pivoting from contracting to perm as a temporary measure as a response if needed. The above also leads me to discuss the collapse of Credit Suisse. In this episode, we delve into the recent collapse of Credit Suisse, one of the world's leading financial institutions, and explore the valuable lessons to be learned from the perspective of an employee. We examine the implications of such a collapse on job security and the significance of understanding company benefits in times of organisational turmoil. We begin by providing an overview of the events leading up to the collapse of Credit Suisse, including the factors contributing to its downfall. From risky investments and mismanagement to regulatory issues and reputational damage. Next, we shift our focus to the employee's viewpoint and discuss the implications of an organisational collapse on job security. We explore the challenges faced by employees when a company faces financial ruin, such as potential layoffs, salary cuts, and loss of benefits. We emphasize the importance of staying informed about one's employment contract, severance packages, and any legal protections available. Furthermore, we analyse the concept of company benefits and their true meaning during times of crisis. We explain how employees can ensure a comprehensive understanding of their benefits, such as retirement plans, health insurance, stock options, and bonuses, and how to evaluate their value when an organization collapses. Additionally, we provide insights on diversifying investments and safeguarding personal finances to mitigate the impact of such unforeseen events. Lastly, we explore how individuals can prepare themselves professionally and financially for such occurrences. We discuss the significance of maintaining a diverse skill set, staying updated with industry trends.
