Teddy Atlas (Part I)

5/5/2024
Theodore A. “Teddy” Atlas is an American boxing trainer and analyst who worked for ESPN for more than two decades. Raised in an affluent region of Staten Island, New York, Atlas grew up in a wealthy area with his father a doctor, and his mother a former Miss America pageant contestant. He was brought up with his mother's Irish Catholic faith at the fore, although it did not have a positive impact on Atlas, who had a troubled youth. Kicked out of school and arrested a couple of times growing up, trouble was never too far away. In part one, Sean tells the story of Teddy's early beginnings and how a life of crime would lead him to the boxing gym and ultimately to Kevin Rooney & Cus D'Amato. Charley Burley

7/2/2023
The term ‘uncrowned champ’ has been used and abused throughout boxing history, but this middleweight contender earned that title the hard way. Charley Burley (September 6, 1917 – October 16, 1992) was an American boxer who fought as a welterweight and middleweight from 1936 to 1950. In an era in which boxing was in the hands of the mob, the sport conspired to deny Burley a title shot to any kind of world championship available at that point, both at welterweight and middleweight. He did defeat several past or future world champions including Zivic and Moore, who once called him “the greatest fighter ever,” echoing a sentiment expressed also by legendary trainer Eddie Futch and many other insiders of that era.
