Happier at Work: 3 Mental Habits for Better Work Life

5/6/2024
This month, we're going to be doing a series on 'Happier at Work.' Our rates of stress and burnout are high. If we want long, productive careers where we help the most people we have to be taking care of ourselves! In this 'sode we go through 3 mental habits Nicole has used to practice for nearly 20 years and that we try and cultivate in our team at PelvicSanity. First is being ready to receive your patient. If you're rushing into work at the last minute you can feel behind, rushed or frenetic all day. That's extra stress and it means you aren't providing the best possible care for your people. We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before your first patient, getting settled in, taking time to review your caseload and feel settled yourself so you can receive your patient. Next is a reset ritual. This is a way to mentally reset between patients. You can leave the last session behind, refocus, and be ready to meet the challenges of your next patient. We find this skill to be critical in pelvic health when we deal with such a wide variety of patients. Finally, count your wins! We start every staff meeting at PelvicSanity by having each team member go through their wins. As humans, we bias towards negativity. Many of us are (hopefully recovering) perfectionists. We dwell on the person who flared, or who got frustrated, or who isn't improving as quickly as we wanted. Instead of focusing on all of the success stories, people we've helped or positive outcomes. So ask yourself at the end of the day - 'what were the wins'? When you start looking for the positive, you'll find it! Downtraining & Vagus Nerve Masterclass For those interested in learning more about working with the nervous system, check out the Downtraining and Vagus Nerve Treatment Masterclasses! With Downtraining, we take a broad look at the three different types of downtraining to use with your patients. In the Vagus Nerve masterclass (www.pelvicptrising.com/vagus), we take a deep dive into specific vagus nerve techniques you can use with all your patients. About Us Nicole and Jesse Cozean founded Pelvic PT Rising to provide clinical and business resources to physical therapists to change the way we treat pelvic health. PelvicSanity Physical Therapy (www.pelvicsanity.com) together in 2016. It grew quickly into one of the largest cash-based physical therapy practices in the country. Through Pelvic PT Rising, Nicole has created clinical courses (www.pelvicptrising.com/clinical) to help pelvic health providers gain confidence in their skills and provide frameworks to get better patient outcomes. Vagus Nerve Treatment - Not Just for Pelvic Pain

4/29/2024
When many of think about nervous system downregulation and treatment, pelvic pain springs to mind. But this is something that is critical for all types of patients. Nervous system safety is a prerequisite to healing! Intellectually I think we would all agree with that, but often we jump into treating diagnoses like incontinence, prolapse, constipation and more without ensuring our patients are firmly inside a 'Zone of Safety'. It's definitely both/and, not either/or! Vagus nerve treatment techniques are one of our most potent tools for creating this, regardless of the patient's diagnosis! Vagus Nerve Masterclass For those listening on the day this 'sode drops, it's the final day to register for the Vagus Nerve Treatment Masterclass (www.pelvicptrising.com/vagus)! Registration closes at 8pm (Pacific) tonight - really hope to see you there! Get in Touch! MOAR You: An Interview with The Movement Maestro

4/25/2024
Can't wait for you to hear this conversation with Shante Cofield (aka The Movement Maestro)! In addition to being one of the most authentic people we know, Shante is an expert in all things Instagram and online business. We cover a ton of ground in this interview. We hear about Shante's journey from from patient care to teaching to online business. She discusses work-life balance, creating content, knowing your 'enough' and more. As we get practical we discuss using Instagram for a brick-and-mortar practice (hint: you're probably doing it wrong) and how that's different than for online business. Shante also dives into what makes a successful online business (and businesowner) and how to know if it's right for you. When Patients Are Complex, Get Simple

4/22/2024
Where does your mind go when you have that complex patient. The one with pages of medical history. Who has a pre-written timeline for you. Or who is undergoing testing for multiple other conditions? One of my clinicians at PelvicSanity was asking me about a patient like this. And she was genuinely complex! I think often our assumption is a complex patient requires complex treatment. We have to get everything 'right' - the right interventions, the right referral at exactly the right time. Or that maybe we're not even the 'right' person to be helping! But in reality, it's usually the opposite. When the patient is complex, we get simple. Go back to basics. 1) Get a Clear Picture - These folks often have so much going on their recollections aren't always accurate. Have them bring you more information - a bladder/bowel diary, tracking their cycle, a symptom log. Something to help hone in exactly what is going on. (By the way, this will be helpful for any other provider they are seeing as well!). 2) Get the Biggest Bang for your Buck - I always am looking for an intervention that has positive impact on multiple symptoms. This is why breathing is such a good go-to. Going out for a gentle walk can kill multiple birds with one stone. Improving sleep. Get creative, and lean into what you already know and what works with these folks. 3) Vagus Nerve Treatment - This is always a go-to intervention for me, because this checks so many different boxes. It's connected to gut health. To mood. To breathing. To stress. To heart rate variability. To a feeling of safety to tolerate other treatments. Vagus Nerve Masterclass - Doors Open Tomorrow! (Tues, 4/23) If you haven't already, make sure you're on the wait list for the Vagus Nerve Masterclass (www.pelvicptrising.com/vagus) - doors open tomorrow, and it's going to be amazing! Bite-sized, super-practical and only $47, you will learn practical, hands-on techniques for treating the vagus nerve. Am I Ready to Hire a Clinician?

4/18/2024
What do you need in place before you're ready to hire another clinician? We always say the decision to hire - especially another clinician - is as big as the decision to start your practice. You want to make sure you're hiring because it's something you really want to do - not because you're busy, or you feel bad about a wait list, or because someone told you it was easy. You'll need to make sure you have the patient volume to support your new hire (and your own schedule). Even more importantly, you'll need to dedicate time to onboarding and training your new hire - regardless of how much or little experience they have! If we don't get this right, it ends up being worse for the business than never hiring at all. Check out the full 'sode for all of our thoughts on when you're ready to hire a clinician! Can't wait for you to hear this conversation with Carrie Pagliano, past Academy President, course creator and founder of Carrie Pagliano Physical Therapy. Clinical and business pearls abound in this conversation - enjoy! One of the most powerful points of this conversation was hearing from Carrie how she deliberately structures her business to support her time with family and her personal life. She is not willing to compromise time with her family for her business and is unapologetic about it. We also discuss Carrie's important work with the Academy of Pelvic Health, including being instrumental in changing the name (from the Section of Women's Health). We'll talk about the lessons she learned and how we can all do better at making our voices heard. We also talk about how much the specialty has changed in the last two decades, new challenges facing therapists, Carrie's advice for newer therapists and how we're the cool kids now - check it out! Am I Ready to Hire an Admin?

4/11/2024
This is a topic we've changed our perspective on over the years of coaching - when are you ready to hire an admin? And hiring is never something to be taken lightly. It's not as simple as 'just hire an admin' and life will be better. You have to create all the systems for them. Onboard them to get them up to speed. Continue to train them, manage them, and lead them. Bringing on employees as just as big of a decision as starting your own practice. But if you're looking to grow beyond yourself, bringing in an admin when you have the financial security to do so is a major accelerator. It can win you time back to market, grow your practice, hire a clinician and make the other changes you need in order to grow. Check out the full 'sode on whether you're ready for an admin! Should I Try To Add Another Revenue Stream?

4/4/2024
Adding another revenue stream, 'diversifying', finding passive income, stop trading time for money....these are all becoming buzzwords in the entrepreneur world. But is the juice worth the squeeze? We dive in! There's really two different categories of possible additional revenue streams. One is to leverage your in-person business in another way. This could include selling products, renting out a room, doing personal training for your clients or running an in-person class or course. The advantage is this uses your current audience and skill set, while the disadvantage is it's usually not as financially successful as just seeing more patient visits. The other is basically starting an online business. You're trying to teach an online course or class, offering remote consultations to patients, or putting together some other kind of paid programming. Don't get it twisted; if you want to start doing this online you are starting a brand new business (not with a new LLC, please!). You'll have to find and grow a new audience, build trust, convert them to paying customers, deliver, have customer support, run your metrics and more. It's anything but passive, and will likely take years before you bring in any significant revenue. So ask yourself why you're thinking about adding another revenue stream. If it's because it sounds like easy money, it's definitely not. Financially, the best decision is almost always to double-down on what's working (and for us, that's seeing more patients - either ourselves or by hiring). But you may have a project you're passionate about exploring, something you want to bring to the community or world - that's incredible, but just don't expect 'passive income' out of it. Downtraining is More Than Breathing

4/1/2024
Often breathing techniques are both the beginning and end of what we focus on when it comes to 'downtraining.' But there's so much more we can be doing, especially when it comes to the vagus nerve. Breathing techniques are fantastic and important, but they also have their challenges for patients. They take time to work. They are dependent on the patient actually doing them. They can feel a bit dismissive to some patients, especially if we don't explain them well. In our Downtraining Masterclass, we argue for broadening our definition of what constitutes downtraining. Downtraining definition: Any intervention designed to reduce tension in the pelvic floor and/or central nervous system. In the Central Nervous System category of downtraining we listed 15 different possible interventions. We're excited about vagus nerve techniques because we can actually implement them in our sessions! And we give our patients the ability to do what we are asking. Should I Have My Prices On My Website?

3/28/2024
Today we go into the pros and cons of having your pricing on your website. Ultimately, putting prices on your website will reduce the number of people who call, but those who do call will be more likely to book. Whenever you field calls, there are three types of people: By putting pricing on the website, you're turning away those 'Magic Middle' people. Even if they decide not to book, you will collect their information and be able to follow up to see if they've gotten the care they needed. After working with 500+ businesses, we really believe putting pricing on the website is often due to not being comfortable having the money conversation on the phone. And it does reduce having to have it. But is it worth the loss of those 'Magic Middle' people? Check out the full 'sode for all the details and advice! 5 Ways to Use the Cozean Screening Protocol

3/25/2024
We created the Cozean Screening Protocol because we wanted a way to help patients and other practitioners realize when pelvic floor dysfunction was causing symptoms. We first published this as a poster at IPPS. Using PelvicSanity as our site we reviewed patient intake forms and charts to see what symptoms or history were most predictive of pelvic floor dysfunction. And after running some cool statistics the Cozean Screening Protocol was created. Anyone answering 'yes' to 3 or more of the questions has more than a 90% chance of having pelvic floor dysfunction. You can absolutely download and use the tool for free (get it at www.pelvicptrising.com/screen). Here are five ways we've used it at PelvicSanity! Marketing to other practitioners. Using it Program-Wide. Patient Education and Community Talks. In the New Patient FolderSocial Media Content - Feel free to download it and use it (we just ask for proper attribution and to not change the questions)! Coming off the high of our in-person CEO Retreat, we wanted to share 5 major takeaways from an incredible group of business owners. Together this group of business owners is shattering what we thought was possible for a pelvic rehab practice. When we first started PelvicSanity, most 'experts' thought no one would ever actually pay more than a small co-pay for care. When we proved that wrong, then they thought maybe you could run a solopreneur business, but you could never build something beyond yourself. People might be willing to see you, but not a member of a team. This group is proving all of that wrong. All of them have multiple clinicians. All are doing more than $250k in revenue. They are both PTs and OTs. They have built multi-disciplinary practices with PTs, OTs and PTAs. Some have multiple sites. Some have created 'wellness centers' and rented out space to allied professionals. Some have purchased their own building. We're so proud of what they - and everyone in all of our different programs - have accomplished. Spending time with them in-person is inspiring and challenges us all to go from 'good to great'. Hope you enjoy these insights! Accelerator Program If you're a business owner looking to take your business to the next level, make sure to check out the Accelerator Program (www.pelvicptrising.com/accelerator). How 'Net Worth' Can Transform Your Financial Health

3/14/2024
Whether you're an employee or business owner, finances can be challenging. They hit a whole new level of risk and uncertainty when you run your own business. All of us struggle with money mindset issues. Our conversations about money are often negative and reactive. We might not even realize what we're making until the year-end W2 or P&L. We judge how well we're doing by what's in the bank account that day. We're worried about student loans. In short, we're stressed about money! And this really isn't correlated with how well you're doing financially. In this 'sode we teach the most powerful tool we've found for creating financial confidence: the net worth calculation. If you're a business owner, we would recommend doing this monthly. And at least quarterly. Quarterly is also a good cadence if you're an employee getting a regular paycheck. It's one number that shows the totality of your financial health. We know it can be scary. Sometimes it's negative, especially with student loan debt. It feels intimidating to have to find all the different accounts and passwords. But it will absolutely help transform your relationship with your finances. Check out all the details in the full 'sode! Business Accelerator Program If you're looking to take your business to the next level, make sure to check out the six-month coaching intensive for pelvic rehab practices: The Business Accelerator (www.pelvicptrising.com/accelerator). We've now taken more than 200 business owners through this. They've grown in both revenue and confidence, on average adding more than $50,000 per year to their business through the program. The 'Rule of 3' with HEP

3/11/2024
You're probably giving too much homework to your patients. There, we've said it! In this 'sode we dive into how to give your patient the correct amount of home exercise work. Here's one clue - have you ever had a patient come back in and complain they didn't get enough HEP? One thing to think about - you're never going to give the perfect amount of HEP. So you can either give too much or too little. If you give too much, what happens? Your patient feels overwhelmed. They're frustrated they can't get to it all. They're embarrassed to come back in and admit they didn't do everything you told them to do. They feel like a failure. Or they do try and do it all and end up flaring! What happens if you give too little? Your patient comes back in feeling accomplished. Proud. They probably did a few other good things too because they had extra time. They're excited to tell you how they did and glad to progress to what you have next for them. It doesn't sound terrible to give too little, does it? We've seen this consistently when training new clinicians at PelvicSanity and working with business owners across the country. As a profession and specialty, we tend to give too many things. We dive into the reasons for this on the podcast - and, more importantly, how to break yourself of that habit! But ultimately, you need to be giving a MAXIMUM of three things. Not always exercises. And when you want to add something later in their progression, you need to be taking something away. So try it for a week. Practice prioritizing for your patient. Check out the full 'sode for all the actionable steps to make this happen and have better outcomes for your patients! How Much Should I Pay for Rent?

3/7/2024
It's one of the most common business questions we get asked, and it's important! Your rent is going to be one of your two biggest expenses (along with payroll). It's sometimes hard to find that 'Goldilocks' zone. If we overspend we can hurt our profit margin and have to work more hours to pay for space we didn't really need. If we underspend we might either dislike where we work or outgrow our space sooner rather than later. In this 'sode we're talking all things rent: for you We'll get really practical here - hope it helps as you navigate these big decisions! Accelerator Cohort #3 If you're a business owner looking to take your practice to the next level, make sure to get on the wait list for the Business Accelerator Program (www.pelvicptrising.com/accelerator). We've taken more than 200 pelvic rehab business owners through this six-month coaching intensive and it's incredible to see the growth in both the business and confidence in those who go through it. Three Questions to Transform Your Eval: An Interview with Susan Clinton

3/4/2024
Clinical pearls, being happier as a clinician, the role of telehealth and three questions to transform your evaluation - this conversation with Susan Clinton has it all! Early in the 'sode we dive into the question of where you start with a challenging patient. There's so many different routes we can take and skills we can use, but Susan manages to simplify the start with a different lens. In fact, one one of the big themes throughout this 'sode is simplifying things for your patient. They're likely only taking in a fraction of what you're saying. Susan learned this lesson by simply asking her patients after a session: "what's your take home from today?" It was wildly different than what she had tried to communicate. We also discuss the the three questions she asks every patient in their initial evaluation. These establish the direction of care, get buy-in and show the patient you're listening and understand their issues better than any amount of education you could provide. Hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed talking with Susan! Susan Clinton Susan is a practitioner and educator with programs for both pelvic rehab providers and patients. She is the co-host of the Tough to Treat podcast and runs a clinical mentorship program. Make sure you're following her on Instagram (@sclintonpt) and check out all her information at LTIphysio.com! What's Your Average Length of Care?

2/29/2024
How long does your average patient come in for? I know, I know - but hear us out! I know you may have a deep-seated aversion to tracking our individual metrics or turning our patient visits into data. I'm sure you've had (or heard of) a terrible boss who was all about the numbers. But it's not unreasonable to know how long a patient usually sees you for! In this 'sode we'll ask you to think about your own Clinical Ethos. How long do you believe a patient should be seen? What's the absolute minimum number of visits it would take to impart your knowledge? To see behavior change and build new habits? To set them up for long-term success? And then....how many visits are you actually seeing your patients for? Is it similar to your Ethos? A lot less? A lot more (hint: it's usually not a lot more ;)? Whatever your Ethos, our goal should be to make our actual number of visits match our ideal (or Ethos) number of visits. This gets us better outcomes, happier patients, more reviews, more word of mouth referrals as clinicians. As business owners, this also generates more revenue, less marketing efforts and less administrative work. So how are you doing in treating according to your Ethos?
