The Tony Spencer Story (Part 4 of 4) - Operation Downpour and the end of the road

6/28/2023
Eventually Tony is released to the UK but the police are on to him, he is once again the subject of police surveillance. He goes to ground, he puts together a gang of ‘misfits’, a prison governor, a boxer, a banker and others. But the police have set up an operation to catch Tony and his accomplices. The story is familiar, but how does it all end? Is there an inevitability to it? A well respected barrister who defended Tony at some of his trials gives his thoughts on the man that he knew, a rare insight into the professional relationship that a lawyer and client have. The story has been told in these episodes, largely by Jason, Tony’s youngest son, the author of ‘The Old Man and Me’. But what does he make of the life his father lived? How has the family been affected by Tony’s criminality? And what can he now do to help the forgotten children of those people who commit crime and are incarcerated as a result. _____________________ See photos, case notes and bonus material at http://truecrimeinvestigators.co.uk/ Researched and presented by John & Sally of True Crime Investigators UK. POSTSCRIPT: Murder Of Monika Zumsteg Telling - Erika visits the UK

5/31/2023
We released our three part series back in 2021. A major contribution to our review, research and ultimately the podcast was from Monika’s younger sister, Erika. We’ve kept in touch with Erika since that time. So we were delighted when she announced she would be visiting the UK with her husband, Tom. Another contributor to that podcast series was Steve Thrift. He was a police officer with Thames Valley police back in the 1980’s and met both Monika, who he found charming and delightful and Michael, a very unnerving person. Steve has now written a book about the case, ‘Telling Lies’ and he too collaborated with Erika when researching the book. One sunny afternoon we met up with Erika, Tom and Steve in rural Buckinghamshire, the area where Monika had lived and where her promising young life had been cut short by the person who should have cherished her the most, Michael. Come with us to that meeting and the journey we went on, in order that Erika could walk in the footsteps of her beautiful sister, still so sadly missed. _____________________ See photos, case notes and bonus material at http://truecrimeinvestigators.co.uk/ Researched and presented by John & Sally of True Crime Investigators UK. The Murder Of Monika Zumsteg Telling (Part 3 of 3) - Ruined Families

8/7/2021
In the Autumn of 1980, a young aristocratic Englishman, Michael Telling, was in Sausalito, a city in Marin County, California, across the Golden Gate Strait from San Francisco, USA. He was riding a special edition Harley Davidson motorcycle. A chance meeting with an American couple, Lou and Elsa Zumsteg, their daughter Erika and other friends, whilst out for a motorcycle ride, was to change their lives forever... Welcome to the final part of our #truecrime investigation into the murder of Monika Zumsteg Telling. In this third episode we discuss what happened after Monika’s headless body was discovered in a wooded area near Exeter Racecourse. We also talk about how Michael had tried to cover up the murder; which had happened five months earlier when Monika was shot and killed and how he had kept Monika’s body in the outdoor Sauna at Lambourne House. Followed by his arrest and subsequent trial in 1984. Violent crimes and murders. They can affect and leave deep scars on even the most strongest of families. So we again talk with Erika (Monika’s sister) and discuss how the Zumsteg family tried to cope with their loss and the deep pain it caused them over the years. If we can, we hope we have helped give Monika a voice during these three episodes and helped tell her sad side of the story to all of you.

Operation Julie (Part 4 of 4) - Busted!

3/1/2021
This is the final part of our investigation into the story of ‘Operation Julie’, which was a UK police investigation into LSD production by two drug rings during the mid-1970s and resulted in the break-up of one of the largest LSD manufacturing operations in the world. In this four part series, we have been interviewing one of the undercover officers involved in the operation; Stephen Bentley and discussing the twists, turns and dangers of the investigation. As well as the people he had to get close to. We’ve also talked about wider issues within undercover policing. In this last episode, Stephen talks about wrapping up his undercover work in LLanddewi Brefi and planning to take part in the joint police raids which will target 87 properties in Wales and England, bringing down the different LSD production gangs. But what happened to ‘Smiles’ and will Stephen see him again? Also what was life like for Stephen after the operation was over? What did he do next? Was he affected by living as a different person for so long? Researched, produced and presented by John & Sally. Narration by Richard Ashwell.
