On this episode, Trevor and Shane sit down with Lizzie Killian, the voice and mind behind Teens in Trouble's debut album What's Mine. In the words of the album's producer/engineer Ryan Perras (and uttered by him in the background during the album itself if you listen closely enough), "When you're doing songs like this the key is to make it as stupid as humanely fucking possible." That isn't exactly the feeling evoked listening to these 10 tracks, but somewhere around the stomping, train whistle, and dreams about making out with Joseph Gordon Levitt, you can start to understand where the impetus for that quote came from. However, amidst a discussion with Lizzie that digs into the stories behind some of these more transparent and lighter songs, it becomes clear there is much more than just a self-proclaimed awkward girl recanting them. For his next pick of an album that has “been around awhile,” Trevor takes us back to 1997 and selects Radiohead’s groundbreaking album Ok Computer. This was more or less Shane’s entry point into the band, at least as far as consuming a full album is concerned. As is commonly the case with this band, it took time for Shane to appreciate these songs and this album in its entirety, just like it did for Trevor as a 13 year old upon its release. The influence of this music laid the groundwork for so many albums that came after it, and for that reason, upon reflection nearly three decades later, this music doesn’t feel as hard to digest as it did in its release, but the creativity and innovation remain as impactful as ever. Ok Computer also remains a pivotal album in Radiohead’s discography as they would move even deeper into experimentation in albums to come. Finally, Shane and Trevor discuss the importance and value of this experimentation on the zeitgeist of popular music but balance that with the value of a band that may by contrast find its groove and stay there. For his next pick of an album that has, “been around awhile” Shane selects Mandolin Orange’s 2015 release, “Such Jubilee.” Mandolin Orange (now known as Watchhouse since a name change last year) is an Americana/Folk duo from North Carolina formed in 2009 by husband and wife duo Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz. Shane has special memories with this band seeing them live with his father. Trevor’s introduction to the band was their 2019 release which Shane had recommended when Album Divers was in its infancy though never materialized as a deep dive episode. This 2015 release was written by the couple while on the road, but recorded back at home in North Carolina and offers a stripped down aesthetic which allows the listener to absorb lyrics offering little worlds about the importance of savoring the moment in the context of love, loss, and generational connection. This album represents the first revelation by Shane of a trio of albums that he purchased on vinyl for Trevor as a surprise gift. The next two will be revealed to both him and the Album Divers audience in due time. For Shane's pick of a 2022 album, he selected indie rock staple Arcade Fire and their new album "WE.” This was a unique endeavor for your hosts at Album Divers in that Arcade Fire is a band Trevor had been following since their beginnings but lost track of in recent years, and Shane, though familiar with the band’s music, had never listened to an entire album from start to finish. Arcade Fire’s latest album “WE” was written in the throes of isolation brought on by the Covid-19 Pandemic. Arcade Fire weaves interstellar imagery with Greek mythos and takes the listener through the rabbit hole that is the disintegrating human connection found and lost again in technology and social media. Like many of Arcade Fire's previous releases, this record is a concept album. It is divided into two halves. The first, titled “I,” represents the self, and the second, "WE,” portrays our relationship with others. "WE” takes the listener into an imagined dystopia of anxiety, violently destroys it, and builds a new world again, only to find clarity in human connection. *** Special thanks to those of your who contributed your thoughts on this album via audio clips. For his first selection of 2022, Trevor goes all the way back to 1963 and selects Sam Cooke's second live album, "One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square Club." Though recorded 22 years earlier, this album was not released to the public until 1985 as Sam Cooke's record label felt that the raw and unpolished sound of Cooke performing in a small predominately black club in Florida would damage his image and alienate his suburban white audience. "One Night Stand" presents Sam Cooke like never heard by most audiences during his life and is filled with raw emotion from both Sam and the crowd, as Sam's voice becomes progressively more raspy with the swelling energy of the evening. Shane and Trevor discuss Sam Cooke's life and history, his role in the civil rights movement of the 60s, and they attempt to make sense of his tragic killing at the age of 33, one year after this album was recorded in 1964. At the conclusion of their deep dive of this album, Trevor and Shane both agree that despite the fact that "One Night Stand" presents a stark contrast to Sam Cooke's studio albums and public image, it is a side of Sam Cooke that showcases an essential portrait of who he truly was as an artist and performer. ***Dont forget to check out our featured independent artist for this episode, OVRGRWN! For his last selection of a 2021 album, Trevor selects Lucy Dacus' June release titled, "Home Video." Lucy Dacus has carved a name for herself with her unique songwriting and layered themes. Once a film school student prior to becoming a musician, Lucy has now released three studio albums as well as collaborated with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker to form the supergroup "Boy Genius." This album see's the indie singer-songwriter drawing inspiration from her childhood as well as her teenage years. Many of the songs are inspired by actual diary entries that Lucy found herself re-reading on her first trip back to her hometown of Richmond Virginia. Dacus describes the experience as one in which she no longer recognized her former self, and wondered if her former self would approve of who she has become. This album is definitely raw and exposed like a heart on your sleeve. As Lucy describes in one track on this album, "it's embarrassing, the pulpy thing beating." For Shane's pick of an album that has "been around awhile," he selects Ben Folds' 2001 release Rockin' the Suburbs. Trevor and Shane have fun reminiscing on an album that they both have history with and memories listening to growing up. This album covers topics of love, fatherhood, self-identity, and depression but somehow also manages to work in some humor on a couple of tracks. Some of the songs are specific to personal events in Ben's life, and others create stories with personal names and places that open up worlds and characters. The lyrics detour some from albums that have been covered on Album Divers in the past with writing that is lest cryptic and laced with literary reference. Ben Folds' lyrics are simple but poignant and carefully selected to paint a picture with the proper amount of weight to them. For Trevor's next pick of a new album from 2021, he selects the latest from Counting Crows titled Butter Miracle Suite One. Joining Trevor and Shane for this album dive is special guest Katie Darby Mullins. In addition to being a die-hard fan of the band, Katie is also a longtime friend of lead singer Adam Duritz. If that isn't enough to get you excited, she also teaches creative writing at the University of Evansville including a course titled, "How to Write About Music," and she is a gifted poet and novelist (see more on Katie below). Shane, Trevor, and Katie have fun diving deep into the lyrics of one of their favorite songwriters after what has been a 7 year break since the band's last album. This 4 song suite is a unique endeavor for Adam Duritz who found himself being inspired by the solitude of a friend's home in London and the challenge of creating a series of songs that all bleed together into one. The hallmarks of great writing and musicianship that fans have come to expect from the band are both here, but after nearly 30 years of making records, Butter Miracle Suite One shows us that Counting Crows are still very much a relevant band today that continues to push themselves in creatively new ways. For his next pick of an album that has "been around awhile," Trevor selects Harvey Danger's third and final album, "Little by Little." Shane and Trevor are fortunate to have lead singer and talented writer Sean Nelson along for the track-by-track deep dive of this amazing album, a favorite of Trevor's since he first heard it in college and remains so today. If you only know Harvey Danger by their hit song "Flagpole Sitta" from the late 90's, you truly missed out on one of the most underrated bands from that era. Sean details the origin of the band, their disoriented quick rise to international fame, and reveals the history of what transpired between each of their albums. They also discuss the decision to release this album for free online, which was truly a cutting edge decision in 2005 (Radiohead may or may not have copied them), and the eventual decision that Harvey Danger had reached its finish line. For his next 2021 pick, Shane selects Lana Del Rey's 7th studio album, "Chemtrails Over the Country Club." Trevor and Shane both know Lana Del Rey's music as an influential part of pop culture, but neither had ever taken the time to fully absorb one of her albums. Chemtrails detours some from Lana's prior work with a more stripped down aesthetic, sprawling piano, and subtle production that gives a more intimate experience than the pop elements she is known for. Lyrically, this album explores themes of escapism and disillusionment with the music industry and fame draped in a nostalgia for a simpler time when all that mattered was 6 chords and a wild heart. For his first album of 2021, Trevor selects Assertion's debut release "Intermission." Joining Trevor and Shane for this episode are lead vocalist and guitarist Justin Tamminga (Pig Snout, Blind Guides, Dying Trades) and drummer William Goldsmith (Sunny Day Real Estate, Foo Fighters, The Fire Theft). For Trevor's first pick of 2021 for an album that has "been around awhile," he chooses Kate Bush's 1985 album "Hounds of Love." This is Bush's 5th studio album and shows her expanding her use of the Fairlight synthesizer creating lush landscapes on an album with two distinct halves. The first side of the album, also called "Hounds of Love," depicts love and communication between men and women, mother and son, and father and son drawing upon literature and interweaving audio clips from movies which she drew inspiration. The second half, titled "The Ninth Wave," is a concept album about a woman lost at sea floating alone with nothing but her imagination and a small light on her life preserver. Shane and Trevor have fun unpacking these lyrics but also just enjoy the music of the innovative queen of art pop herself.
