Nicole LePera, Ph.D. - The Holistic Psychologist: Recognize your Patterns, Heal from your Past & Create Yourself

1/4/2021
Pre-order Nicole's brand new book, 'Do The Work': https://www.amazon.com/How-Do-Work-Recognize-Patterns/dp/006301209X In our first episode of 2021, we’re joined by Nicole LePera Ph.D. (@the.holistic.psychologist). Nicole is a Cornell University trained clinical psychologist who is arguably the most innovative educator of our time when it comes to teaching us more about ourselves & mental health. As a clinical psychologist, Nicole often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients—and for herself—she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical & spiritual wellness that equips people with the interdisciplinary tools necessary to heal themselves. After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she’d learned with others—and soon “The Holistic Psychologist” was born. Now, Dr. LePera is ready to share her much-requested protocol with the world. In today's episode, Nicole offers both a manifesto for SelfHealing as well as an essential guide to creating a more vibrant, authentic, and joyful life. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, Dr. LePera helps us recognize how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole body dysfunction—activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of codependency, emotional immaturity, and trauma bonds. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviors can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, and unwell. This episode offers listeners the support and tools that will allow them to break free from destructive behaviors to reclaim and recreate their lives. Nothing short of a paradigm shift, this is a celebration of empowerment that will forever change the way we approach mental wellness and self-care. If you listened to our season 1 episodes with Dr. Bruce Lipton, Dr. Bruce Perry, Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk & Dr. Shefali, you will realize that Nicole’s work is from their school of thought & offers some of the most innovative approaches to understanding & healing from our traumas. If Exercise Were a Pill

7/13/2020
If Exercise were a pharmaceutical pill, it would create a multi-trillion dollar conglomerate & every doctor in the world would be prescribing it. It would create better insulin sensitivity, reduce stress, improve brain health, reduce & even reversing chronic disease, enhance detoxification, slow the aging process & improve sexual function, ALL in one!!! It has even been demonstrated that one to two hours of exercise a week in adults can prevent depression. Here's a paper published in the American Journal of psychiatry in 2017 elaborated on an 11 year study on almost 34,000 people that proved this: (https://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/doi/full/10.1176/appi.ajp.2017.16111223) In this episode, we talk about some of the latest & greatest findings in the field of exercise science. I mention a study in this episode that absolutely blew away the world. It was a 2018 large-scale study of more than 100,000 patients by the Harvard School of Public Health. It found that those who chose to eat a healthy diet rich in vegetables, exercise at least 30 minutes a day, maintain a healthy body weight, limit their alcohol use, & chose not to smoke during adulthood, had an 82% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, a 65% lower chance of dying from cancer, and a 74% lower risk of dying from all causes during follow-up. Here's the link to this study: (https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/press-releases/five-healthy-lifestyle-habits/). Exercise has also been shown to improve the heart's ejection fraction: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6445773/ This was a quick 10 minute episode that was inspired by my attending physician on this month's hospital service, thank you Dr. Eukesh Ranjit. Patricia Rush, M.D., MBA - The Root of Chronic Disease & a New Hope for Health Disparity

4/15/2020
In the 1990s, there were only two female hospital CEOs in the United States - one of them is our guest today! Her name is Patricia Rush, MD, MBA. In this episode, Dr. Rush takes us through the course of her 40 years as an internal medicine doctor. She has a fundamental conversation of hope – an opportunity to get to the root causes of physical & emotional suffering & completely revolutionizing the way that we look at chronic disease & health disparities. She discusses her career paths & what led her to create a different kind of primary care practice; The ASTONISHING relationship she found between patient experience & health; And lastly - new scientific findings – which can help us all create a new and better approach when it comes to getting to the root of chronic disease. She is the co-founder of The Center for Collaborative Study of Trauma, Health Equity, and Neurobiology (THEN). THEN was formed by 4 women health clinician-scholars in 2017 with the goal of designing and sharing a curriculum for medical science about childhood adversity, neurodevelopment, lifelong health and health equity. THEN provides lectures and workshops locally, nationally, and via video-conference. Through their website (www.thencenter.org), they hope to provide a series of short instructive videos, supported by an extensive Bibliography and Glossary: THEN CURRICULAR MODULES include: • Core principles of System Science • Regulation and Dysregulation • Notice re Traumatic Content & Importance for Clinicians of Self Care • Life Course • Neurodevelopment • Trauma, Adversity, and Chronic Inflammation • Health Equity and the Trauma of Discrimination • Clinician Skills in Interviewing Patients and Building the Clinician-Patient Partnership • Therapeutic Principles in Developing a Regulatory Plan for Patients • Re-examination of typical models of key diseases One of the most important medical discoveries of the past few decades was recently published in the scientific journal, Nature Medicine in December, 2019. This was a large-scale meta-analysis of data from more than 160,000 people across 54 long-term prospective studies & it PROVED that chronic inflammatory diseases have been recognized as the most significant cause of death in the world today. With more than 50% of all deaths being attributable to inflammation-related diseases, such as ischemic heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), auto-immune & neurodegenerative conditions. Evidence is emerging that the risk of developing chronic inflammation can be traced back to early development, and its effects are now known to persist throughout the life span to affect adulthood health - linking early childhood experience & chronic illness! This was one of Dr. Rush's greatest epiphanies - long before this recent article! Full Journal: (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/337773457_Chronic_inflammation_in_the_etiology_of_disease_across_the_life_span) You can find Dr. Rush's organization, THEN on Social Media: Instagram: @then_center Website:www.thencenter.org Twitter: @then_center YouTube: Launching Soon! He began doing research on stem cells more than 50 years ago, back when only a handful of scientists even knew what they were! His research at Stanford University’s School of Medicine revealed that the environment we put our cells into can control our cell's behavior, physiology & influence them to turn certain genes on & off! This is what led Dr. Lipton to discover that our mind: is the government of all 50 trillion cells in our body - a finding that went on to contribute & help create one of today's most important fields of study, the science of epigenetics. Dr. Lipton's research & teachings have been INSTRUMENTAL to my philosophies as a family medicine physician. Aaron Spitz, M.D. - 5 Steps to Maximizing Penis Health

12/23/2019
In this months episode, we are bringing you the American Medical Association's Chief Representative of Urologists, Dr. Aaron Spitz. He has specific training and interest in male reproductive medicine & surgery. I discovered his book: 'The Penis Book: A Doctor's Complete Guide to the Penis-From Size to Function and Everything in Between' from James Cameron's Netflix documentary: The Game Changers (produced by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jackie Chan). In the documentary, Dr. Spitz performed a small sleep study that tested the strength of erections in athletes based on what diets they were eating. The study showed that a single plant-based meal allowed the athlete's erections to last three times as long and were nearly 10% stronger (during their sleep). It was after watching THIS I KNEW we had to have this man on our show!!! Today, he hits his 5 step plan to Maximizing Penis Health which includes the following: Diet, exercise, sleep, limiting/excluding pornography & avoiding drugs & alcohol. He goes in depth on each of these topics & gives us some insight on all the developments that have occurred since Game Changers was released! This literally means that you are what you eat! (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2373379/) In this months episode, we're bringing you Dr. Rupy Aujla, International Best Selling Author & the founder of The Doctor's Kitchen! He's an emergency medicine doctor & the clinical adviser to the Royal College of general practitioners in the UK. Dr. Rupy also founded the non-profit organization ‘Culinary Medicine’, which aims to teach doctors & medical students the foundations of nutrition as well as teaching them how to cook (this is the future fam!). Ive been following Dr. Rupy Aujla on his instagram, @doctors_kitchen for awhile now & I began noticing that they are truly revolutionizing the way doctors are approaching medicine. We had the honor of dissecting his newest book, Eat to Beat Illness & I'm happy to say it’s become my go-to cookbook. This episode is jam packed with SO many practical tips that highlight how taking control of what you put on your plate can give you power over your health!!! Dr. Aujla opens up about being diagnosed with a heart condition (atrial fibrillation) when he was a junior doctor. To his surprise, by changing his lifestyle: via increasing intake of vegetables & fruits, nuts & seeds; meditating regularly; exercising; and incorporating better sleep hygiene, he was able to reverse the condition! A piece from Dr Rupy’s book: ‘On discussing my experiences with cardiologists, general physicians and lifestyle medicine practitioners it was hard to retrospectively pinpoint exactly what had happened to make the AF episodes stop. My increased vegetable intake likely replaced electrolytes and vitamins in my cells that were lacking. Eating cruciferous vegetables on a daily basis flooded my body with plant chemicals that we now understand have profound effects on DNA. I continued to drink alcohol on occasion, but I removed sugary drinks completely. My added dietary fibre is likely to have improved the functioning of my gut bacteria, which can lower inflammation via a variety of chemical pathways. I potentially attenuated the stress in my life triggered by poor sleep and a demanding job by increasing essential fatty acids in my food and practising mindfulness.’ If you enjoy the episode, please subscribe to our podcast & rate it 5 stars on iTunes: MEDspiration Podcast on iTunes Tag @medspiration in your stories on IG & please share with us your favorite parts of this podcast, I’ll be sure to feature you & write back!!! We've partnered with them to bring you an INCREDIBLE OFFER: Picmonic.com According to the National Library of Medicine, it is now scientifically proven that the environment we grow up in has a direct impact on our brain development. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3232061/ Research from animal and human models suggest that early life stress (such as abuse, witnessing domestic violence, and serious household dysfunction) that occurs while mom is pregnant, or after birth, during a baby's first days, weeks and months of life, may be particularly influential for neuro-developmental or brain-related outcomes. This is because the stress occurs at a time when brain systems are rapidly organizing. For example, a baby’s brain is making 20,000 brand new neurons per second! Compare that to the average adult, who will makes about 400 neurons a day. During last months episode with Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, we connected the CDC’s Adverse Child Experience’s (ACES) study to chronic disease & mental health. The thing that alarmed me most as a physician was that individual’s who have 6 or more ACEs die on average: 20 years earlier than those who grow up in stable environments! Well we cannot complete that conversation without looking at how the brain forms during our experiences in childhood (neuro-development). That’s why today, we’re bringing you the WORLD’s leading expert on childhood trauma! This is the man that Oprah goes to when she wants to learn about childhood trauma!! Dr. Bruce Perry is a psychiatrist & has a PHD in neuroscience. Persons who have experienced four or more categories of childhood exposure, compared to those who had experienced none, had 4 to 12-fold increased health risks for alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, & suicide attempt; a 2- to 4-fold increase in smoking, poor self-rated health, 50+ sexual intercourse partners, and sexually transmitted disease; and a 1.4- to 1.6-fold increase in physical inactivity and severe obesity.
