Who are you? What do you find your identity in? Everyone has the innate desire to know who they are; what significance they have in creation; what meaning they can bring to the world; how they fit into the grand scheme of things. The problem is that as sinful humans we are very bad at trying to figure this out on our own. We must start with the foundational truth that identity is given by God, not self-created. Then we have to realize that our identity is multifaceted. We are complex in our makeup and identify in all sorts of ways. However, all the various aspects of our identity must be subject to what God has declared over us. There are at least three “categories” of things we find our identity in: Many people are trying to find out who they are as an individual, but they do not have a correct understanding of who they are as a human, or who they are in Christ. The world errs in trying to discover their personal identity, but ignoring what God has declared their identity to be as humans, and their identity as needing to be in Christ. This leads to sinful expressions of personal identity. The church errs in focusing ONLY on our identity as hidden in Christ, and ignoring the diverse ways Christ has chosen to have that expressed. This leads to us thinking that the different things we like to do are insignificant HOW TO FIND YOUR IDENTITY Assuming you understand your identity as a human, made in God’s image, and a child of God hidden in Christ - how do you find your individual identity? Would the Apostle Paul build a Tent for a Gay Wedding? The heart of this question is something I've been wrestling with for a while, but more so in recent years. I run a non-religious design and marketing agency and have served clients from all backgrounds regardless of their faith, or sexual orientation. I have historically turned down projects that are obviously in contradiction with my values. However, as I proceed in business the gray area seems to get wider as businesses and organizations become more and more liberal and openly sin-affirming in their core beliefs. I wrestle with the question - should I continue doing marketing and creating content for businesses who will likely use what I create for an agenda I disagree with? If I build a website for an insurance company (hypothetically speaking) that puts their statement about gay inclusion and intersectionality training on their About Us page, am I compromising? Or do I serve them as unto God and not assume unnecessary liability for what they may do with what I create for them? Would Apostle Paul make a tent for someone after learning that it would be given as a gift to a homosexual couple at their wedding? Would he appeal to his words in 1 Corinthians 8:8 “[this] will not make us acceptable to God. We are not inferior if we don’t [do business], and we are not better if we do...” I don't have a quick and easy answer, but I have three principles to suggest: 1) Be thoughtful. Don't settle for knee-jerk reactions to complex questions, and don't assume most questions are not complex. 2) Be consistent. Draw out implications and scenarios that are different, yet similar to the predicament you're facing and ask yourself "am I acting with consistency?" 3) Operate from Faith. Anything that is not done in faith is sin. Whatever you do, do it as unto God for the purpose of bringing Him glory. I'd love to hear your feedback, pushback, or questions. What place does theology have in the life of an entrepreneur? I hold to the premise that theology is of utmost importance in the life of every believer, especially for us as Christian entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, many Christians have become bored, or apathetic, or even critical of theology. If we do not regularly renew our minds with the Scriptures and develop a deep sense of good theology, we will end up drifting into worldly expressions of how entrepreneurship looks like. The problem comes when Christian Entrepreneurs who are either disinterested or bored or apathetic towards theology start to engage in the world, they end up looking more like every other entrepreneur, and less like Christ. Imagine reaching the end of your life. You're standing before the throne room of God to give an account of your life, and one of two scenarios happens: 1) You look back and see all the potential. All the things you could have, and should have done. The things God has called you to, but you didn't do. 2) You look back and see all the accomplishments you've achieved. All the success, but none of what you've accomplished survives eternity - it was all meaningless. Those two fears often paralyze me, but also propel me. So you want to serve in ministry, but you also want to grow your business. The conflicted podcast is for driven entrepreneurs who are also devoted Christians. If you fit in that category, you see why I titled the podcast Conflicted... I started this podcast because I don’t hear anybody talking authentically about the struggles Christian entrepreneurs face in trying to keep their fire for God while building a business. As Christ-followers we want to live a life of devotion to Jesus and follow what He says in the scriptures... and most of us see our vocation as one of the means by which we live out our calling.. but in the pursuit of growing a business, we often find points of conflict (or at least I do) with how we live this out practically. So we are going to talk about it. We are going to search the scriptures for God's wisdom and also hear from other entrepreneurs who are in the same fight of building a successful business while maintaining devotion to Christ. The first season will contain 8 episodes that are about 10-15 minute vignettes where I’ll unpack the general struggles and points of conflict I’ve faced as an entrepreneur who loves Jesus. The second season episodes will be a bit longer as I’ll be interviewing Christian entrepreneurs from different contexts to give a diverse look at some of these issues from various perspectives.
