Jonathan Wilson

1/19/2024
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt. In today’s episode I'm joined by award winning writer and editor of The Blizzard, Jonathan Wilson as we discuss the recently revised edition of his book Angels with Dirty Faces, an incredible book which not only covers the history of Argentinian football to the present day, but also the history of the modern country itself. I really recommend it. Beyond the book we cover Jonathan’s three football shirt choices, beginning with a nostalgic trip to Sunderland’s Roker Park during an epic FA Cup Run, an emotional African Cup of Nations win for Zambia and we round things off discussing the legacy of Maradona and the shirt he wore against England at the World Cup in Mexico in 1986. *** The article covering Zambia’s moving win in the AFCON Final in 2012 can be found here https://www.theguardian.com/football/2012/feb/12/zambia-ivory-coast-africa-cup-nations-final You can follow me on Instagram, or get in touch via Twitter or email. footballkitmemories@gmail.com https://Twitter.com/FKMPodcast https://instagram.com/footballkitmemories Watch on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@footballkitmemoriespodcast You can get the revised edition of Angels With Dirty Faces https://www.orionbooks.co.uk/titles/jonathan-wilson/angels-with-dirty-faces/9781409144441/ Subscribe to The Blizzard Periodical, which Jonathan edits here https://theblizzard.co.uk/about/ Make sure you follow him on Twitter too: https://twitter.com/jonawils https://twitter.com/blzzrd The music you heard was produced by Evil Ed check out his music on Bandcamp page https://eviledtheenthusiast.bandcamp.com/ There’s links to everything I’ve mentioned in the notes section And… finally thanks to you for listening. James Brown - founding Editor of Loaded Magazine, author of 'Animal House'

5/26/2023
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt. In today’s episode I'm joined by the founder and first editor of Loaded magazine - James Brown. James recently published his memoir ‘Animal House’ which covers his life both before and after the magazine and for me it was an excellent read in the way it honestly reflects both the highs and lows of celebrity and excess during the 1990s. James initially began writing in Leeds during the 1980s, where he turned his passion for music into his own successful fanzine. A move to the more established music press in London followed first at Sounds and then at the NME before James was given the opportunity to set up Loaded, a title that essentially redefined male culture in the media. Our chat covers the music, magazines and mayhem that James describes so well in his book, as well as his passion for football and Leeds United. Alastair Campbell

5/2/2023
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt. In today’s episode I'm joined by a huge name in podcasting and politics, Alastair Campbell. Beginning his professional life as journalist, Alastair Campbell became more widely known as the chief communication strategist in successive Labour governments during the Tony Blair years. More recently, his podcast The Rest is Politics, which he co-hosts with former Conservative MP Rory Stewart has consistently topped the charts and has made politics more engaging and accessible for a mass audience, including me! We also cover his latest book ‘But What Can I Do?’ (out May 11th), written to arm the average person with ways and means of making a real difference in the complex and confusing world of politics. Beyond all this, of course, Alastair is famously a huge Burnley and Scotland fan and we talk about his experience of football through his choice of three very special football shirts. *** You can follow me on Instagram, or get in touch via Twitter or email. footballkitmemories@gmail.com https://Twitter.com/FKMPodcast https://instagram.com/footballkitmemories Watch on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@footballkitmemoriespodcast Alastair’s new book ‘But What Can I Do?’ is published by Penguin Books and is available from May 11th in all good bookstores https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/454259/but-what-can-i-do-by-campbell-alastair/9781529153330 Make sure you follow him on Twitter too: https://twitter.com/campbellclaret The music you heard was produced by Evil Ed check out his music on Bandcamp page https://eviledtheenthusiast.bandcamp.com/ There’s links to everything I’ve mentioned in the notes section And… finally thanks to you for listening. In today’s episode I'm joined by Nooruddean Choudry, who has recently published his first book, a memoir of his life called Inshallah United - A Story of Faith and Football. I’ve really enjoyed Nooruddean’s output over the years, be it on Twitter, in the Guardian or various podcasts and I was delighted to get some time in with him to discuss the book in what turned out to be a far more wide ranging chat. We cover off his writing process, imposter syndrome and the desire for authenticity, something I can tell you he successfully delivers throughout the book. Martin O'Neill

2/22/2023
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt In today’s episode I'm joined by a true footballing great - Martin O’ Neill. Martin has recently published his excellent memoir - ‘On Days Like These’ and I was lucky enough to catch up with him to discuss his career through his choice of three different football shirts. A league and two time European Cup winner at Nottingham Forest, Martin went on to augment his trophy cabinet with yet more honours as a top level manager at clubs like Leicester City, Celtic and various others. Martin was captain of the famous Northern Ireland team that reached the second round of the World Cup in 1982, something he reprised as manager of the Republic of Ireland at Euro 2016. Martin was kind enough to put a lot of thought into his shirt choices and this, coupled with his unique storytelling ability means that listeners are in for a real treat today. 10/8/2021
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt. In today’s episode I am joined by Author, Football Historian and Former Director of the National Football Museum Dr Kevin Moore During our chat, Kevin shares his memories about the conception and opening of English National Football Museum, which he ran for its first 20 years. Theres the history, the artefacts and a number stories Kevin shares about his life in football. I learned so much on the call and I could have spoken with Kevin for hours. Later I asked Kevein to pick out three of his favourite football shirts and tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. Each of these shirts either is or has at one point been on display at the museum as we cover Maradona’s Hand of God away shirt from 1986, the England shirt Bobby Moore swapped with Pele in 1970 and we finish in 1872, with the woolen jersey England wore in the first ever football international versus Scotland. *** You can follow me and my own collection on Instagram, or get in touch via Twitter or email. footballkitmemories@gmail.com https://Twitter.com/FKMPodcast https://instagram.com/footballkitmemories Watch on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7ZkbjUVvh2YmgH6knIvOAw Make sure you follow Kevin on social https://twitter.com/doctorkevinmoo1 Check out his book - What You Think You Know About Football Is Wrong on Amazon here https://www.amazon.co.uk/What-Think-About-Football-Wrong-ebook/dp/B07T3KF1D4 The music you heard was produced by Evil Ed check out his music on Bandcamp https://eviled1.bandcamp.com And… finally thanks for listening. Andy Laing - Football Writer, Alba Matter

10/1/2021
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt In today’s episode I'm joined by football writer Andy Laing. During our chat I find out how being laid up in a hospital bed was the motivation behind Andy’s starting the Alba Matter website in 2020. Andy uses his background in education and growth mindset coaching as inspiration for his writing - and its his personal outlook that makes these articles covering mainly Scotland’s Men and Women’s national teams so interesting. Andy also sheds light on the excellent poem he wrote that was published by the Scottish FA the night before the Czech Republic game at Euro 2020. Later I asked Andy to pick out three of his favourite football shirts and tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. Andy shared some great memories as we reminisced about reading football annuals cover to cover and the same football VHS titles till they were worn out. We started in Mexico in 1986 and the great home shirt El Diego wore to dazzle defenders. Our travels took us to Turin and Bianconeri stripes worn by Baggio, Ravenlli and Vialli… and we finished in glamorous Kenilworth road, home of Luton Town.
