The selection committee meeting for Team India’s World Cup squad is always up for a huge debate. The deadline to submit the preliminary squad is May 1 and the team news could be out anytime soon. Only a handful of players are certain of their berth in the World Cup squad, but there could be some jostling for remaining positions. Sanjay Dhas knew that if he were blessed with a baby boy, he would name him after legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar. He did name his son - Sachin. He probably had foreseen that Sachin Dhas would become a cricketer as well. Sachin remembers playing with only bat and ball, nothing else. He started playing cricket at four and played his first invitation match at six. Coming from a small village like Beed, he rose through the ranks of age-group cricket in Maharashtra. With his unmistakable talent, he was named in the India squad for the U-19 World Cup. India lost the World Cup final to Australia but Sachin was one of the standout performers of the tournament. April 18, 2008. The first match of the IPL was played between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders. IPL is into its 17th season and has seen numerous players turn up for different franchises. Some players turned out to be only one-season wonders. The likes of MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik, who played in the inaugural IPL season, are still active. The talent IPL has seen is enormous. It has honed some of the superstars of world cricket. In this IPL special series ‘IPLchi Ratne Pt 1’, we look at three stellar players who made their name in the IPL. All three players hail from Gujarat. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya were scouted and signed by Mumbai Indians and they’re integral to Mumbai’s success. Axar Patel was with Mumbai in 2013, but his breakthrough season was in 2014 with Punjab Kings. Bablu Patil began his cricketing journey way back in 2004 at 19. However, he knew cricket could not be his only source of livelihood and joined the Maharashtra Police in 2006. However, his love for sports saw him participate in various tournaments as a sprinter with the police force. As part of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), he often had to visit the Naxalite area of Maharashtra -Gadchiroli. Even in that remote area, he organised cricket tournaments for locals. However, his loyalty is to his uniform and not a cricket jersey. Cricket takes a backseat when he is called upon by the State. To live by that principle, he had to miss out on opportunities to play cricket abroad. But he has no regrets. He has seen tennis-ball cricket evolve in the past 20 years. Sumit Dhekale started his cricketing journey at 16, playing leather-ball cricket. At the same time, he would also indulge in various kinds of tennis-ball cricket viz box cricket, light-tennis etc. As he became better and better with tennis-ball cricket, the leather-ball cricket took a back seat. However, even today he likes leather-ball cricket better and plays in leather-ball tournaments whenever time permits. There’s an ear-to-ear grin on his face as he recalls winning the Mumbai Premier League with Prithvi Shaw and dancing their hearts out on the team bus. Vishwanath ‘Vishu’ Jadhav used to play under-arm cricket as a kid and always wanted to be a batter. He often used to accompany his local team to cricket games but never liked it when he was used just as a fielder. Even then he was clear about two things - he enjoys batting and he doesn’t enjoy studying. Vishu used to roll his arm in practice and would do well against left-handed batters. But one day he was asked to defend a small total against a south-paw batter and he managed to do that. That’s how he became an all-rounder. Today, he travels across Maharashtra and internationally to play tennis-ball cricket and has carved a successful career for himself.
