The Hidden Impact of Trauma on Love and Relationships

5/1/2024
In this Language of Love Bite, we're going to dive deep into a topic that's both incredibly personal and universally relevant – the five common types of trauma and how they impact our love lives and relationships. As a sex and relationship therapist, I've seen firsthand how trauma can really shake the foundation of our self-worth and trust. We're talking about sexual trauma, physical trauma, emotional trauma, and those gut-wrenching experiences of rejection, humiliation, abandonment, and betrayal. Each one of these can leave scars that might not be visible to the eye but can be felt deeply in the heart. I want to walk you through how these traumas can hinder us, and how they can make us put up walls where we should be building bridges. It's about understanding that when we're hurt, our instincts tell us to protect ourselves, sometimes to the point where we might push away the things we desire most – connection, intimacy, and love. But here's the thing – and this is so important – healing is possible. I can't stress enough the value of trauma-informed therapy. Techniques like somatic experiencing can be game-changers, helping us to reconnect with our bodies and process those deep-seated emotions that we've been carrying around. If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. It's not a sign of weakness; it's a step towards recovery. And I want you to know that you're not alone in this. We're in it together, and I'm here to support you on your journey towards healthier, more fulfilling relationships. My First Ever Interview with a Spirit Guide with Riz Mirza

3/13/2024
In this Language of Love Conversation, I'm chatting with Riz Mirza. He may look like a heavy metal rocker (he is by the way), but he’s also a trance-medium psychic channel. We dive into the supernatural (and even spooky) stuff is a part of our natural world that we don't always see. Riz says that thanks to the limitations of our 5 senses, most of us have filters on that only let us catch a glimpse of all the info out there. Riz opens up about his own story, how he went from pushing away his psychic abilities to totally embracing (and yes rocking) them. He's all about embracing that sensitivity and the strength it brings. And me? I'm sharing some of my heartache and messages I’ve been receiving since loosing my son. Plus, get this – In addition to a mediumship reading with some wild messages from my departed son, Sammy, Riz channeled a spirit named Red Eagle and I interviewed him!! I’ve never interviewed a spirit guide before. It was wild. He's passing on messages about the state of the world, how to move through these crazy times, and giving a sense of validation that was so comforting. Listen in, it's going to be an incredible show! In this episode, Riz (and Red Eagle) and I dive into: Understanding the limitations of human perception and processing of information The concept of suspending disbelief and being open to new ideas Why hope actually may work against you. How to find joyful navigation through chaos Dealing with grief and finding meaning in loss Mediumship and channeling as tools for healing and connection with loved ones The power of sensitivity and self-expression Overcoming judgments and living authentically The transformative potential of navigating loss with grace Be sure to connect with Riz on Instagram and his website to delve deeper into his work. Overcoming Trauma Reactions in Relationships

3/6/2024
In this Language of Love Session, we continue our conversation with Ken and Marla, a couple who has been going through some sexual struggles, and we really got into the nitty-gritty of how stress and trauma can mess with your love life. Ken's been feeling super stressed and it's been hitting their intimacy hard. He's distracted, tired, and just not in the mood, which has been causing some tension between them. Marla, on her end, is experiencing PTSD symptoms in response to Ken’s anger, even though it’s not directed at her. This is not at all uncommon for those with a trauma background. But the dynamic is making her pull away and shut down emotionally. It's like they're stuck in this loop where they just keep triggering each other. So, I suggest they try somatic experiencing therapy. It's a game-changer for understanding and dealing with trauma responses. And one big thing I emphasized was the need to separate their actions from their reactions. It's not easy, but it's so important for healing and moving forward together. I'm confident that this session will not only provide you with a deeper understanding of the complexities of trauma in intimate relationships but also arm you with practical guidance to face similar challenges head-on. Remember to check out my recommended books The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma and Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma and let's keep growing together. Overcoming Codependency

2/19/2024
Have you ever found yourself constantly prioritizing the needs of others while neglecting your own? Do you get anxious when those you care about are anxious or angry? Do you find arguments leave you contorted, desperately seeking forgiveness and acceptance from your partner? If this sounds like you or someone you love, its time to confront the possibility that you may be trapped in the clutches of codependency. This Language of Love Bite, I dive into the complex world of codependency, its roots, its effects on our relationships, and the path to healing. The origin of codependency can be traced back to traumatic childhood experiences, such as being raised by an addict, a narcissist, or enduring emotional or physical abuse. These early life challenges often lead to "parentification," where children assume the emotional and sometimes physical responsibilities of caring for their parents, setting the stage for codependent behaviors later in life. Despite the challenges, I acknowledge the positive aspects of codependency, such as the innate desire to give and receive love. Join me in exploring these insights further and taking the steps toward healing and growth. In this Bite, I explain: Codependency as an addiction and a lifetime of recovery The role of traumatic childhood experiences in developing codependency Codependents' fear of abandonment and susceptibility to toxic partners The struggle to discern authentic love from manipulation The positive and manipulative elements of codependency How to heal from codependency through inner child work and setting boundaries The challenges codependents may face when setting boundaries and standing up for themselves Remember, if you're looking to enhance both your love life and sex life, whether you're in a relationship or not, I highly recommend checking out my free course on Quantum Sex. Additionally, if you're seeking to break free from codependency, there are some valuable resources I suggest exploring. A Journey of Exploration and Connection

2/7/2024
In today's episode we’re continuing our journey with Ken and Marla, a couple I've been helping to boost their intimacy. Their story is like so many others. Marla has been opening up about her shyness around masturbation, and I've got to say, I'm proud of her for being so honest. Ken has been amazing, too—totally supportive of Marla's journey into self-exploration. I always tell people how crucial masturbation is for your personal health and really getting to know your body. It's a game-changer, especially for your sex life together. I've recommended a vibrator that I think could be a great fit for Marla, and I'm all about them experimenting to find out what feels good. And it's not just about those intimate moments in the bedroom. Ken and Marla have been finding ways to connect in their everyday lives, which is just beautiful. They're on this path to achieving orgasm together during sex, and let me tell you, they're making some fantastic progress. Here is a glimpse of what we explore: Ken and Marla's relationship update and experiences with intimacy Incorporating a vibrator into sexual activities Guidance on enhancing physical intimacy Ken and Marla's efforts to maintain physical connection Prioritizing Marla's pleasure during intimate moments Recommendations for exploring new ways of intimacy Masturbation and its role in understanding one's body and enhancing comfort Advice on using a specific vibrator and experimenting with different options The importance of consistent physical intimacy and building intimacy in different moments The goal of achieving an orgasm during a sexual encounter and inspiring others through their journey This episode is a big one because it's not just their story—they inspire so many others dealing with the same issues. Monogamy Ain't Natural

2/5/2024
Lifelong monogamy can be quite a challenge in our world today. We're living longer, our needs are evolving, and there are so many different factors at play. You see, we humans are kind of wired to be what you could call "serially monogamous." It's like we're designed to form temporary relationships for the purpose of raising children. And interestingly, this ancient instinct still seems to influence our modern relationships. Just look at the stats – divorce rates tend to spike when the youngest child is about 2 or 3 years old. It's a complex topic that's worth exploring, and that's exactly what we'll do in this Language of Love bite. While monogamy may not be our natural state, it's a choice that many of us make for various reasons. Whether it's for the sake of raising children, maintaining stability, or simply because of personal preference, monogamy requires effort and commitment. But with the right approach, it's a choice that can lead to fulfilling and lasting relationships.
