Bad Band Great Song

Music Podcasts

Bad Band Great Song is a music critique show that explores what critique means and how it affects us... while also doing the thing. But it's primarily a show about Bad Bands who happen to have Great Songs. In each season we look at a collection of bands and some hallmark songs of theirs. We then, in each episode, tell the band's story, discuss the key song's creation and relevance, analyze and assess how the band may be considered bad, and finally, we declare that a song of theirs is great. And we defend that. Disagreement is encouraged.

S2E7 - OMC, How Bizarre.

11/16/2021
This episode marks a major milestone moment in the show. The boys find themselves asking, "Is this band bad?", as opposed to telling you, "This band is bad". OMC, aka Otara Millionaires Club, is a one-hit-wonder with a novelty song — to most people. But singer Pauly Fuemana's story goes much deeper than that. And OMC is just the tip of the iceberg of a vibrant scene of Musika Pasifika. Join us this week as the boys break their brains and try to understand how a band could be bad even though they made a good album. Let us know your thoughts: Disagreement is encouraged! S2E6 - She Wants Revenge, Tear You Apart.

11/9/2021
As friend of the show Oscar Wilde once wrote, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” How 'bout that? Isn't that interesting? Fascinating stuff. She Wants Revenge is a duo comprising Justin Warfield and Adam Bravin aka Adam 12, former DJ for Crazy Town (and Prince... And Obama...). They're a heavily produced goth-tinged post-punk band that had the goal of getting the cool kids on the dance floor. Warfield's journey has taken him from downbeat conscious-rap, to psych-rock, to rap inflected industrial, to She Want's Revenge's brand of what could be called post-punk. Join us as Jerry and Andrew discuss things like "authenticity", sticking to themes, nailing a sound perhaps at the cost of having substance, and gothic post-punk written for people who wanna fuck. S2E5 - Smash Mouth, All Star.

11/2/2021
We're going to Flavortown, folks! On today's episode of BBGS the boys tackle a big one, the band Smash Mouth and their song "All Star". "All Star" is one of the most profitable and licensed out songs ever. Smash Mouth is seen by many as a joke, but their story is anything but funny. Join Jerry and Andrew as they discuss melt-downs, bread, why Guy Fieri hates eggs, and the importance of being feminine. Let us know your thoughts: Disagreement is encouraged!

10/26/2021
Welcome to the spooky spectacular... the Halloween episode of Bad Band Great Song! And, hey hell, the boys are going over Rockwell! And his song: "Somebody's Watching Me". S2E2 - The Bravery, Unconditional.

10/12/2021
Is The Bravery just a bunch of industry plants? And if so, how frequently do they need to be watered? Directions unclear. Join us as we discuss The Bravery's A&R fueled ascent to the top of mainstream-hipster-rock-culure as MTV2 darlings, to being hallmark-channel cheugy-as-hell grocery-store-rock, to alienating fans of either of their previous records, and finally to their breakup. We end things as we do: discussing what makes the band bad, and what makes their song great. So join us for an all-killer and no-filler lean 'n' mean episode of BBGS. S2E1 - Natalie Imbruglia, Torn.

10/5/2021
Welcome to Season 2 of Bad Band Great Song! In this season's premiere episode, Andrew and Jerry address topics such as: spider-law, glacial brain development, the absurdity of differing opinions (lol), and how Billboard is basically a boomer. The boys also trace the trajectory of the song "Torn's" journey from one artist to the next. That's right... spoiler, in case you didn't know... but, Natalie Imbruglia is not the first person to perform "Torn". Join the boys as they detail the full history of the song "Torn" while also exploring Imbruglia's story, along with the other key players in this song's story. S1E8 - Milli Vanilli, Girl You Know It's True.

9/7/2021
Season 1 Finale — Season 2 Drops Tuesday, October 5th (10/5). In the boys' biggest episode yet, they recount the tragic, tumultuous, and in ways ultimately triumphant story of Milli Vanilli and their defining song: Girl You Know It's True. The story is large; it's an international tale of callous and calculated exploitation, ecstatic and orgasmic highs, and ultimately fatal lows. Andrew and Jerry end the episode by tackling the big questions of "what makes this band bad?" and "what makes this song great?" And this time, even our technical insights border on fervent and passionate proclamations. Let us know your thoughts: Disagreement is encouraged!

S1E7 - Puddle of Mudd, She Hates Me.

8/31/2021
This one's a doozy: all the insanity of Crazy Town but with all of the hatable energy of Sonny Sandoval from P.O.D., and in ways worse. This is the murky and messy story of Puddle of Mudd — AND the examination of their second biggest hit, but arguably greatest song, "She Hates Me". Cracks. They're kinda like threads, even though they're not. Let us know your thoughts: Disagreement is encouraged!

8/24/2021
From America's Most Wanted to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, this is the story of Crazy Town and their monumental, vibe-heavy, and iconic smash-hit "Butterfly". The band's story is tragic, but it's also a story of perseverance. Join the boys as they discuss the band, its song, and some unintentional gayness. AND, enjoy theatrical performances of key lyrics from "Revolving Door" and "Butterfly". Let us know your thoughts: Disagreement is encouraged!

S1E5 - Fozzy, Judas.

8/17/2021
On this mind-fucking episode of BBGS Andrew and Jerry break brains with a lengthy preamble on art and artifice... the multitude of realities that exist due to individual perception... and the transformative powers of masks. This is somehow a podcast about professional-wrestler Chris Jericho's rock band Fozzy and their song "Judas". Also shouts to local indie promotions Outlaw Wresting and ICW New York. 8/10/2021
The boys do their best to avoid ad-hominem attacks, but this episode gets pretty fuckin' close! Join Andrew and Jerry as they get into the importance of vowels, the value of knowing the meaning of the word "justify", and they discuss the complexities of christian bookstores. Content warning: P.O.D. has an anti-choice song titled "Abortion is Murder" which is discussed, quoted, and picked apart in this episode. Let us know your thoughts: Disagreement is encouraged!

S1E3 - New Radicals, You Get What You Give.

8/3/2021
Artists are a funny bunch. They think very highly of themselves, have logic that does NOT cut both ways, and often times have poor recollections and understandings of their past statements and their own work. Join us for Season 1 Episode 3 as the boys break down New Radicals, their song "You Get What You Give", and unpack Gregg Alexander's hubris-laden and distorted interpretation of his own lyrical content. S1E2 - Soul Asylum, Runaway Train.

7/27/2021
Andrew and Jerry break down the long, winding, and peculiar story of a tuneful punk band's descent into "live, laugh, love" hallmark-channel mediocrity. Jerry also bravely proclaims some highly controversial and spicey takes on Nirvana, which are frankly just plain wrong. Brave, but wrong. How 'bout that? Join the boys as they recount Soul Asylum's story, address why they may be a bad band, and argue how Runaway Train is a great song. And answer us this: Are you "indie" if the label you're on is owned by Hasbro? Let us know your thoughts: Disagreement is encouraged!

S1E1 - Semisonic, Closing Time.

7/20/2021
Andrew and Jerry discuss rockstars not knowing what puns are, critics not knowing what hooks are, what it means to be "indie", sideburns, and songcraft. Oh yes, and they do the whole "bad band great song" thing too. Join them as they recount Semisonic's career, discuss the creation of Closing Time, explore how Semisonic may be considered a bad band, and make the case for why Closing Time is a great song. Thanks for listening. And remember, disagreement is encouraged!
